  • Important Information: This is a re-upload of the original episode including all music!!!
Electronic Beats TV welcomes back Disco aficionado Daniel Wang for part three of his ‘Talking Dance Music series’. This time, Wang dives deep into the track “Twilight” by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. The track featured as a B-Side on the 1985 12“ release ‘Too many Games’ via Capitol Records.
The band Maze was founded by Frankie Beverly in the 1970’s out of Philadelphia, once known as Raw Soul before relocating to San Francisco and renaming themselves. After meeting with the iconic Marvin Gaye and accompanying him on tour they became an immediate success. Succeeding this, Maze went on to record numerous albums of their signature funk-infused, soulful sound as well as many other hit singles, here we look at one of Daniel’s beloved b-side’s from the outfit.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Daniel Wang video if you didn’t get an ornate and detailed background about the song’s chords, notes and history. Tune in to find out more about this seminal slice of 80’s Disco.

"By Daylight" is defintely a fine bootleg of the original "Twilight" by Maze, which I've been playing since the mid 1980s. I still have two copies. So, thank you for letting me know about Demonstration's "By Daylight"...

For those of us who grew listening to Frankie Beverley and Maze as teens, "Twilight" was a BIG SURPRISE...
...'cause during the mid/late 70s, Frankie Beverley and Maze was our afternoon chill out music to smoke a spliff, drink white wine (or drink tea)...
...so Maze was moreso part of our "quiet storm" smooth soul and Jazz Fusion background music when we weren't clubbing.
Just imagine (10 years later) being in a club or warehouse at 2:00am in the mid 80s, running up to the DJ booth in the midst of the dancing... 😄 ...and finding out this deep, atmospheric jam rocking the floor was by the same group we associated with mellow afternoons in our teens!
We loved the song's distinctive fusion between the emerging (proto-) House and the popular Electro (Breakbeat) sound.
Another BIG surprise during the 80s was the song:
    "Was Dog A Donut"
    by Cat Stevens
😉 ...especially for those of us who associated Cat Stevens with playing hokey from middle school, chillin' and listening... 😆...rather than dancing at 4 in the morning.
Just like some of the (unexpected) artists creating Funk, Philly, Disco, and R&B during the 70s...
...there was alot of great artists contributing to club/warehouse sounds in the 1980s!😁👍🏾👊🏾

Oh wait, Danny pulling out another record, wow! Maze, love them! and it just continues, goes on into Goldie sampling, the same tune, which betw, I think there is also a downtempo version off If I remember correctly?

Funny, when listening to 'The Probe, The Strobe EP' it's like being transported back to 'the twilight' era (in my mind anyhow!) Think on this, Maze are/were considered to be at the top of their game as musicians when joy and pain hit. Quite a bold move to drop all the live instrumentation and release a minimal synth based track, must of upset a few of their diehard muso fans (at the time)

funny I never played that side of the Phil Asher record. In Toronto the other side "Hope" was a bit of a hit among the house crowd, mainly because the Patti Jo original was somewhat known among the rare groove scene, which overlapped with the house music scene. I don't think anyone played the other track, despite Maze being quite popular for the songs mentioned, especially Before I Let Go, which always got the damcefloor to cheer. Joy and Pain was probably popular due to Rob Base sampling it.

Interesting! Different city, different reaction to the same record! 🤔🎵 Just to clarify: in fact, when we recorded this video, i started off by playing both sides of the Phil Asher record together with the original by Patti Jo (from "Disco Gold" LP) and mentioning the source of the vocal samples (Ntozake Shange, "For Colored Girls")! You can see those LPs in my hands in the first two minutes.. but it all got too long, so we cut it down to only "Twilight" 😅

I genuinely appreciate your opinion, so .. replying here: i think you have to "put it in context". Frankly, my own first 2 or 3 vinyl releases were mostly just samples of bits of old disco records too... (although even back then, i started to make tracks "from scratch" by playing all the basslines and chords myself).. BUT in the early 1990s, i think a lot of us didn't imagine that we were making some big international DJ career or "stealing from the past". All that beautiful old soul/ RnB/ disco from the 1970-80s was like a lost continent, and only a few hundred of us DJs in New York, London and Chicago seemed to be trying to "revive" it. Obviously there wasn't Instagram, or a big commercial DJ market. "Making tracks" using old disco samples and cheap synthesizers and then pressing a vinyl record was the only way to make a special DJ tool which could be played in a club. (We had no MP3s or CDJs in 1992!)
Personally i felt happy if i sold 600 or 800 copies, imagining that "fellow DJs who appreciated the old school sound" were the ones who bought it. Same for Phil Asher, probably he sold less than 1000 copies of his version of Twilight. And he didn't merely "bootleg" it, his version contains some extra keyboard riffs and rhythm breaks .. he sort of gave it a new twist, or made his own (unauthorized unofficial) remix of Twilight, so to say.
Anyhow, after a few years (toward 1996-97), both Phil and I worked mostly on our own original music and avoided sampling. Better and cheaper technology made that possible... in year 2000, with a Korg D8, i could finally have 8 multi-tracks which i could mix down, with 2 built-in effects. What an improvement that was!
And in 2023, we now live in the ultimate music hell, where MILLIONS of people without a chord or even a 5-note melody in their head can nonetheless use software with infinite multitracks to make and sell "music". 😐
