Thank you for the comments, everyone! Just so everyone knows, I do travel with an air compressor, two cans of fix-a-flat, an assortment of tire tools and regular tools, two jacks and a satellite phone! I might be overly prepared, but better safe than sorry!!

If you ever have to use the fix-a-flat, I have heard that if you leave it in a tire, it will ruin it. You might check with your tire man to see if this is true. If so, they can remove it at the tire shop.

Lived in Cedarville for a while back in the 1980's. I was the only physician there and took care of a 24 bed hospital. You drove right past my home on the north side of hwy 299 just before going over the lake and into Nevada. Mine was the last house in California on that side.
I actually loved the area and it's very strong people. I went several times along your route, and I truly enjoyed the vastness and isolation.
Some years later I flew my own helicopter into the same country several times. The trip is much more scenic and much easier with this form of transport.
Thank you ever so much for this video. It brought back many warm memories. And thank you for all your videos; they are always so uplifting and inspiring in these troubled times. A devoted fan!

We'd rove that road twice. Vya is a NDOT station only. No gas, breweries, salons, botiques, etc. In about 1988 or so we took that road in October to check out the Sheldon Refuge. About 2 months later a guy, his wife & infant hit that same rd. He didn't know anything about the area, where he was going & didn't have the 3 brain cells needed to; get a map, ask locals in Cedarville, or let someone know where they were. All went through a huge snowstorm, were stranded for days w,
w/o food or water & only by the grace of God did they barely survive. Nevada will kill you if you take these things for granted. Last year an old guy died after getting lost on a dirt rd. in a RV
Don't rely on Google dirt as it not always accurate. If you want to see the back country buy a Nevada Map Atlas. Also, cell phones aren't always usable.

ADVICE..When you get home, practice changing your tire. even if your are strong enough to do it, so many times people find out that the wrench does not fit or a jack part is missing etc. Good Idea to at least practice.

Wonderhussy, a trick I learned changing out tractor tire and wheels is , just jack it high enough to maybe slide a dollar bill under the tire then pry off the bad tire and wheel, roll it out of the way and roll the replacement in place lean the tire on the top lug enough to get the nut started good, then kick the tire in place or jack it up just a little and kick it in. Put on the rest of the lug nuts and let it off the jack.

    • @jkirkland153
      @jkirkland153 2 роки тому +3

@X Fix a flat is a option if you have a portable filled air tank. However the latex or liquid internal sealant gets spread all over the metal wheel and tire semi evenly and causes balancing problems. I've never used it successfully on offroad conditions. When the tire is replaced the metal wheel is covered with a semisolid goo that is difficult to remove and is the culprit in tire balancing problems.

James and Jennifer Stolpa tried to take a short cut through this area to attend a family funeral. They got stuck in their truck for 4 days and then tried to hike out to safety. Mom and baby spent 2 days in a "cave" while Dad walked 30 miles through a blizzard to Vya. There was a huge rescue effort covered by the media while trying to rescue Mom & baby. I remember hearing news on the radio that they were saved. Both parents had significant frostbite. It's an amazing survival story!

I've been on that paved road (the one you hit off the gravel road)-- trucking into southeast Oregon. It's. Restricted road for trucks. Trucks over 65' not allowed. Back in the early days for me I drove a cab over and had a 48' trailer. In was glad to get back to Texas. I thought west Texas was the middle of nowhere, nope, northern Nevada is the middle of nowhere. I stopped for the night on that road and I only saw one car pass before I went to sleep.

Spectacular! I have been planning an overland trip through that exact area to look for undiscovered opal deposits! the area in the vicinity of Virgin Valley near Denio is all part of the same volcanic ash beds that produce black opal. I am a geologist, but back in 2013 I had a stroke at age 46 that has left me partially paralyzed. I can still drive offroad to explore, but hiking is a bit challenging,so I live vicariously through your video adventures-
Back in the day I did the same thing-the farther off the tarmac, the better. watching you have a ranch water at sunset in the desert transported me back to when I used to metal detect in northern Nevada and have a big glass of chilled Mead while watching the sun go down... absolute heaven! Thank you for the time and effort you invest to bring us along with you, it means so much to those of us that can't get out like we used to. Be safe out there! Regards,Jeff

I enjoy your trip on griddy roads. You are a daredevil. A tip for the ladies if you ever have to change a tire and you can't turn the lug wrench. You can push the wrench down so there is no slack and the wrench is in the horizontal position. Then with your foot, stomp hard on the wrench, but be careful. This should break the nut. Don't jack up the tire until all the lug nuts are loose. I was a tire man in Kodiak, Alaska when I was in the U.S. Navy --- This method works for you guys too.

Hello wonder lust hussy🌞 the last time I went to the burn I went through Denio , plus I’ve wonder ed about in that area. I saw once, in that general area, in more or less, the middle of the night, what had to be experimental aircraft flying out of ???
Area 51 ? Perhaps? Anyway they, there was two of them, they were going so fast that I barely had time to register that there was some super high speed aircraft flying almost over the top of me. Funny thing was, they made zero sound. No roaring engines no swooshing noise no sonic boom nothing nada I never would have detected their presence if not for gazing at the wonder ous sky and stars. The best reason of all for wonder ing into that part of the vast desert west

Those BFG’s were a wise choice. Unless they were made prior to the upgrade they’re 10 ply tires which is a great barrier to rocks on the trails. The only time you’d need to step up to mud terrains is if you were in muddy areas or deep snow. I had the mud ones when I had snow up to the bumpers on a full size bronco. I was blasting down back roads where snow was whipping in front of the windshield. Never felt out of control. I pulled a pickup out of a muddy field when he couldn’t move. Pulling someone else out will give you confidence to know what you can navigate by yourself. It never hurts to get out and look for disguised obstacles.
    Have fun out there!

Great video WH! I drove between Winnemucca and Lakeview, OR in February, 1985 when I moved from Colorado to Oregon. My girlfriend (now my wife) lived in Lakeview at the time and she was riding back with me. I had everything I owned under a tarp in the bed of my pickup and my girlfriend and I were in the front seat (this was when pickups had only one bench seat and two doors) with my goldfish in his bowl between us and various houseplants and other items that couldn't ride outside so the cab was full. We pulled into Denio Junction, (not to be confused with Denio proper which is a couple miles north) to get gas. It was dark and fortunately the gas station was still open. As I was filling up a guy came up to me and asked if we were headed west to Lakeview. I said we were but there wasn't any room in the cab or bed. He said he broke down a couple of days before and he was sleeping in his car at the station and we were the first car in two days that was headed west. I apologized that I couldn't help him and expressed optimism that someone would be by soon to take him west. I haven't been back since then and am wondering if there was an early '80s silver VW Jetta with CA plates in the parking lot when you were there?

Thats some of the best advise on the tire changing issue. I had a brand new truck "Ford"and the jack broke from the welded base and crushed my hand between the tire and rim of my truck. It was made in China and had no recourse or so I was told 15 years ago. I carry a floor jack and 4 way lug wrench. Also keep fix a flat and a Air pump.

It's stressful- that kind of driving. But beautiful too. Wondering, Sarah, if you went through High Rock Cyn, guess not- as I saw no walls. Brave you were though- to do it. I've been wanting to. Got maps from The Winnemucca field office- years ago now. Plenty of Sagebrush. I'm going to be out there- Cedarville, in a couple months. Thanks for share. Just looking at the NV Benchmark atlas and the Stopa Rescue Site is marked in the Sheldon Antelope refuge. You were within five miles of it if you were on Badger Mtn Road. 👍

I just subscribed after lurking for way too long. Great work WH. You did a route which I've been eyeing for a long time--Nevada Route 8A from Vya to Denio Junction. I didn't take the time to scroll through all of the 544 comments before mine, so maybe this has been addressed, but the Jim and Jennifer Stolpa episode is pretty fresh in my mind: I'd once had an interest in looking for and visiting the cave in which Jennifer and their infant son (Clayton?) took shelter while Jim started the long trek back towards Vya for help. The family had actually abandoned their stuck 2WD pickup truck along 8A some distance back to the west (10-15 miles?) and they'd walked towards Denio (east/northeast) through deep snow along the roadway. They reached an intersection and took what they thought to be the more likely "main road" but they were wrong--they headed southeast towards the Hell Creek basin, a dead end small network of roads and trails ending at the rim of a deep canyon hosting Virgin Creek After walking farther in the wrong direction from the intersection, they reached near exhaustion and located a "cave", actually an overhanging rock outcrop with little in the way of real shelter. There Jennifer hunkered down while Jim turned back toward their truck and Vya many miles past their truck. I believe a County road maintenance person spotted him long before Vya and the rescue efforts began. With the foregoing in mind, I started perusing my Nevada Benchmark Atlas for the ill-fated intersection along 8A, tracing the "wrong road" down towards Hell Creek, looking for any obvious bluffs which might form an overhang similar to a cave. And, sure enough, on Page/Map 33, west (left) side, around grid C/D 7, was the subject of my search--the English language label "Stolpa Rescue Site", immediately southeast of North Hell Creek campground and northwest of Chokecherry Spring. The Benchmark I'm looking at now is the Seventh edition, copyright 2020, and the site must have been included on earlier editions as it's been at least 6-8 years since I first "discovered" the map showing. And they say I'm no Magellan. Now I'm going to figure out exactly where you long two-track "short cut" was. See below.
Oh, and like mentioned before, I'd invest in a satellite emergency device before venturing out like that again.
I'm really enjoying your work and looking forward to seeing more about this particular adventure. I think I see where you ventured WAY southeast of 8A to reach the intersection of Soldier Meadows and Badger Flat Rd within the Summit Lake Reservation before heading northeast to Gridley Springs and Gridley Lake, but I'll await your storytelling for confirmation.

I often get gasoline at Denio Junction between Winnemucca and Lakeview, OR on the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway. The best part is going down the Daugherty Slide. One time the pumps at Denio Junction were hit by lightning and gaoline was not available. I was able to make it to Adel on my Ducati where I could only buy regular gasoline. I last went to Cedarville in the 1960's with my grandfather. The first time I was on the Winnemucca to the Sea Higway was in 1966 in my gradffther's Jeep.
