One of the most nuanced things this movie teaches is that you can’t have anything you want, no matter how much you work for it. Mike wanted to be a scarer but wasn’t built for it, but his talents were able to give him success in other ways. In a generation where “you can be anything you want to be” there is nothing wrong with failure and redirection.
Agreed, although perhaps a better way of putting it is that "you can't have everything you want" 🤔. Also, I think what's taught with the "you can be anything you want to be" is that you still have to have a plan B or aim for the stars even if you don't hit them. I like that Mike's time and hard work put into being as scarer is put to waste. He may not be a scary monster himself but he can turn other monster's into scarers and he can be a good coach. It does kind of feel like this film was made just to have that good message 😎. That and Disney kind of made Pixar produce some sequels when they bought them lol.
I don’t think you can literallly BE something you’re not like a lot of other people think, but I actually think there’s no limit to what you can DO in life. You can always put in that hard work
@@reelstellar It depends on what it is. Many people can study as passionately as they desire for years, they'll still not be enough naturally wired to comprehend science on the level of NASA. I really believe there is a prodigious component there, even if it doesn't make out the whole deal. Similarly some people simply aren't built to be as fast as Usain Bolt, because there are body shapes more naturally dense in bone and heavier, unable to reach the level of proficiency with running required for that level. Same as with being built sturdy enough to be a strongman by contrast. Hard work isn't always the only necessary ingredient, that doesn't mean there aren't many other things we can do. In a way I find this movie to have the anthesis message to Zootopia, whose message, as an unpopular opinion I didn't quite like. Monsters university however, I quite like the morale here. So for me, I think reality is you can neither be nor do anything in life. But you can always excel at what you can do.
@@CLDJ227 I always liked how it was phrased in ratatouille when they pose the idea that anyone can cook really means a great cook could come from anywhere. In this movie I like to think of it as don't let the things you can't do hold you back from what you can do. Not all of them may have been "scary" in a traditional way or in a way they thought they had to be, but they still had their own skills. Mike in the end wasn't able to be scary but that didn't stop him from knowing HOW to be scary and using that to his and the others advantage.
The Fact that this movie was made 12 years later after the first film means that the audience from that movie were already in College during this movie’s release aka similar to how the characters in this movie are in college. Pretty great timing.
Not exactly true if you were born when the movie was made you’d be 12 when it came out only if you were maybe 10 or 9 would it work like that and the characters in the original are a lot older than that and boo is like 6
The best thing about this movie is how it makes the ending of the first movie even better. Mike has been wanting this all his life and was never able to. But when they switch over to laughs, now mike is the superstar.
It really expands the arcs of both characters. You kinda said it best for Mike, but for Sully, we see him go from a self serving jerk to a very empathetic and kind guy. And the sheer fact nobody really talks about his family name (cuz obviously back then they didn’t have that backstory for him), shows that he made a name for himself outside his family’s legacy and created his own path. Best Pixar sequel/prequel imo.
Fun Fact: In the original film Mike states that Sully has been jealous of his looks since 4th grade. But in this film they meet for the 1st time in college. But actually the producers or directors or whoever, actually did plan for them to meet when they were kids. The movie was planned to open with them meeting as kids and being rivals for some years before 1 of them was forced to move away. Then later re-meet in college. They scrapped this because I believe they didn't think it would work into the film or just don't think it would translate into the rest of the movie
I think the line from the first movie still works as a hyperbole, not to be taken literally. like when someone says something like "I need this done yesterday"
I found it hilarious, that they showed, that Randall actually needed glasses and that this is why he was squinting this whole time. Makes his appearance in the first movie that much funnier😂😂
It's even funnier cuz mike was the one who told him to lose the glasses. And even though they're rivals, and he tried to kill them, he still doesn't use glasses.
This film is underrated. The lake scene is the best most powerful scene from this film and the original. The film has a really compelling and nice story and message. Sometimes as much as you want something no matter how hard you work for it sometimes you just aren't cut out to do it but that doesn't mean there aren't other options out there for you
Monsters University is underrated genius. It's a perfect prequel in that it actually WEAPONIZES people's knowledge of Monsters Inc against them - you KNOW Mike's going to fail, but by the time it happens, you're rooting for him to succeed. I also love that it has the important message for Disney viewers that no matter how hard you work for a dream, one you've had all your life, sometimes it's not meant to be. And that's heartbreaking, but it can work out for the best.
Hardscrabble's criticism about Sulley's roar making a child afraid of snakes cry instead of scream was actually correct. Think about what happened when he accidentally scared Boo, did she scream? No, she cried. Now, who was her assigned monster? Randal, a very snake like monster.
Omg I just noticed. If you look early on in the video when Sully climbs into mikes room after stealing the FT mascot, Randall has a poster that says “winds of change”! One of his most well known lines from monsters inc. “Shh shh shh! You hear that? It’s the winds of change…” I can’t believe he got it from a poster when he was a freshman in college. What a dork lol
Fun fact, in the director's commentary for the film, they had to redo the final scare because the first draft they had was actually scary. They were worried they might actually terrify children going to see the movie. It's weird to think about the fact that you have to strike a balance between believably scary and actually terrifying
I think this really helps not only with the previous movie, but also gives somewhat positive representation to unconventional college students (i.e. older students, dropouts). I know this is a very lib take but I found that detail kinda heartwarming 💗💗
I love the message of this film. Usually films give us the shiny dream that if you want it, you can be it, which sets a lot of kids up for disappointment. But this film says there is more than one way to achieve your dream, and sometimes your dream might have to change a bit, but you can still be successful and you can still be happy
As someone who is going to be a freshman in college this year, this movie is perfect 😂 Can't wait to see your guys reactions. Definitely an underrated Disney movie
My 3 y.o. daughter has been watching this movie since she was 1. Now when she watches it, she tells me she’s going to go to college and be a scarer, and it’s the most adorable thing.
I really like this movie because it shows that sometimes you might not be able to do what you wanna do. Or you might fail or miss your chance. But there are other avenues you can take to achieve a dream, even if it's a little off the path you had set for yourself in the first place. And that's okay.
The use of the drumline in the score for this film was a brilliant choice and doesn't get anywhere near enough appreciation. Personally, this is my second fav Picar sequal after Toy Story.
I watched this movie in grade 4 and loved it. Now I'm in college and my love for this movie has only grown! They explore the premise of a post-secondary learning so wonderfully and to its fullest potential imo. One of the only great Pixar flics of recent.
My favorite thing about these new animated movies is that they are including rock and metal songs in to small snippets. This one was the mom jamming to Mastadon, in Secret Lives of Pets: SOAD, in Sing 2: SOAD, and in the new Chip & Dale: Lamb of God
29:03 Never knew why Javier wasn't scarier to me . . . rewatched the movie just now and he's terrifying. Imagine an insect-like being twice your size, combine it with those sound effects, and *screams*
Some people have pointed out that it's odd for this prequal to be about them learning how to scare given how the first movie ended. However, I think it makes the message of this film a bit stronger 🤔. Mike and Sully not only became top scarers but also changed their whole world's industry by discovering how children's laughter is a better power source then screams 🤔.
The drumline parts were recorded by my favorite drumcorps the Concord Blue Devils. Amazing musicians was so hyped to see their behind the scenes then in the movie
Honestly one of my favorite sequels ever. Not only does it enrich the worldbuilding and character development in the first movie, but it has such a great and unconventional message that was handled really well- especially that lake scene. So underrated.
It's actually curious to see this version of the movie, even though I knew it exists. In 8:33, the cupcakes Randall have were supposed to have the letters, to form the phrase "be my pal". So, when they fall in his face its supposed to form "lame". Also in 9:48, the notes were supposed to be A+ and C-, instead of :) and :(
6:43 Professor Knight is voiced by Alfred Molina(Doc Ock) 10:22 The one good thing about ROR is that they're not just another Fraternity stereotype, they actually do value good grades.
I saw this at a midnight showing when it first came out and the theater was mostly people my age that were college kids who grew up with Monsters Inc. It was so much fun and parts of this movie are surprisingly emotional (and that camp scene was genuinely slightly creepy with the energy in the room lol). Loved this reaction, guys!
So funnily enough Randall is always squinting even in the first movie. And that is explained here since he needs glasses. It also explains how he mistook Mike for Boo when he set up a trap in Boo's room. He also couldn't react quickly enough when Him and Sully suddenly directly bumped into each other when leaving the scare floor at some point.
I love this movie, I probably watched it hundreds of times because for whatever reason my brother and I loved rewatching movies like these before we went to sleep.
13:07 they might not look particularly imposing like the others, but what they may lack in intimidation they more than make up for it in intelligence, they don't have to look that scary to get second place behind ROR in time for the beginning of the last competition which actually takes a lot of guts
I'm one of the 5 people who prefer this over monsters inc tbh lol. Actually top 3 pixar movies for me even. Idk i loved it as a kid but i just feel like it's so relatable to me right now especially that I'm in college too. It's underrated and did not deserve all the flak it got.
Idk the college theme has been done forever. This was like a cartoon of Revenge of the nerds... Porkys and Animal house...the college movie was played out by 2013
If I'm not mistaken fun fact: the orange monster who was on the cheating team that they stung was the same one who kept getting beat up and shaved by the monster fbi 😂😂 in the first one 17:19 here is the time stamp so you know what I mean

This came out the year I started college and I felt that it was such a warm, comforting way to help me through feeling homesick and that transition period! ❤
There's a resonance with the lines "What are you doing in my room?" "Your room, this is my...this is not my room" that I feel on a personal level sometimes.
The cupcakes in the version y'all watched were different from the one shown in US theaters. They spelled "Be My Pal" and when they fell on Randall's face, they spelled "Lame". Here, they're just faces and they fall on his face similarly
One of the things I love about this movie is how consistent it is with the sequel(original? Either way), with us never seeing a child get scared. We see the robots scared, but we always cut away when a real child would be frightened(and it makes it that much more upsetting and heartbreaking when Sully scares Boo in truth). When Hardscrabble tells Sully how his target was afraid of snakes and the profile means if he roared "he wouldn't scream, he would cry", which is pretty much what happens when Boo(who is scared of Randall, being a serpentine creature)sees Sully roar. I like the message of the film, that no matter how hard you try and want it, sometimes you don't achieve your dreams, but you can still use your skills to benefit people.
Still has one of my favourite third acts in a Pixar movie. The lake scene is so well written and performed it gets me every time. The message is quite a serious and poignant one, how sometimes in life there are goals you can't reach. Mike's understanding that he isn't scary is so well done, and his true talent of teaching others is highlighted. Sully's quote that he isn't scary, but he is fearless is just wonderful. As someone who only just (literally yesterday) graduated from uni after a few years delay, thinking I would never get to this point, this film hits that little bit deeper right now.
This is one of my favourite prequels ever! Sully and Mikes friendship is awesome ❤❤❤❤❤ Monsters university is such a creative and beautiful looking film
monsters inc was my favourite as a kid and as an adult i love monsters university so much. i have autism and i love how this story can be interpreted to be a story about neurodiversities and disabilities. like mike we often have to try twice as hard and we often still fail. we’ll never be the same as typical people but it doesn’t mean that we aren’t useful or important. mike has the theory and the strategy that sully doesn’t which makes him just as important as a ‘typical’ scarer
Good to know that you guys enjoyed it the same as I do. Fun story tho, I can't afford to go to HK DisneyLand but I do have a friend who knew that I'm a sucker at Pixar. After his family went there for vacay, we then met to catch up and to my surprise he gave me a merchandise of MU cap, it even has the ruined tip as the design (only the cap itself is made in different material). It was given to me Jan 13, 2020 and I still have it in til this day as display. I will be eternally greatful of him and his family. T'is all, thank you for reading. John is also wearing floral again, really suits him everytime
fun fact : the design of russell from UP was based on the voice actor of squishy (the one that john said looked like russell) which he was also the director pixar’s elemental .
While I loved the message of this movie, I’ve always disagreed with it’s assertion that Mike isn’t scary. He’s not scary in the same way Sully and the other big, loud monsters are, but seeing that thing in my room would probably still scare the shit outta me. I think he really could’ve benefitted from leveraging his creepiness over how loud he could roar or how big he could make himself look. Imagine waking up to him just standing at the foot of your bed staring at you. Not even roaring, just staring. I still think the best scaring performance in this entire movie was from Terry and Terri, though. Making their silhouette look like a parent entering the room? That’s genius!
Loving this John and Tara duo. You guys are killin it! You guys are dropping banger after banger after banger every week and I’m absolutely loving it! Every different pairs of people are all amazing! ❤❤❤❤
I love Tara. She’s so talented and for people that don’t know, she can sing her ass off, and play the guitar. Her page deserves more followers and she’s super nice. Go follow her people! Help out the good ones!
This movie is so underrated, and it’s better than M Inc. It’s more relatable and realistic in an amazing way, taking the viewer into this absurd, colorful, fantastical world, but then addressing the fact that you can build a life that makes you happy after FAILING to achieve your dreams.
I remember seeing this movie in the theaters in Qatar when I was 12 or 11 and thinking back then that this movie should’ve been the first one not knowing the concept of prequels back then Good times
One thing I was sad about that Mike and Sullivan got expelled for destroying the door lab and cheating in the final game I felt bad for the 2 of them. But I realize that it doesn’t matter what you do if it is wrong, Mike only wanted to impress others that he’s a good scary monster and Sullivan too even when they got expelled. I started crying 😢 this part where they said goodbye to their family and the part when Mike tells them: don’t let anyone tell you different. 38:0538:09
the only big problem i had with this kovie was how they acted like mike was the only non-scary monster in the team like i mean other than sullivan all pf them looked adorable , i felt they should’ve came up with more creative ways for them to scare . (eg like how squishy didn’t need to roar)
This movie feels like this was made for those kids who have grown up now and trying to figure out what to do, while monsters inc was a movie aimed towards the kids and parents
This is the Disney animated movie i remember from my younger days, from toy story, monster inc, big hero 6, moana, mulan, and many more before they lost their way soo sad..
I'm totally convinced one of the reason this movie gets hated on is that people just don't like the message: you can do everything right, and still fail.
My brother is 1 year old and he loves this movie. I remember the OK vs ROR battle at the end he actually sat down on the ground and watched it fully it was so cute 😂❤. Btw we always put it on he at least watched it more then 100 times 😂
This movie resonates with me more than most movies in general. My whole life I wanted to work for Pixar, and I’ll be honest, there was no way I was going to afford Cal Arts and didn’t have the talent to work for Pixar. I work in marketing and still make animations as a hobby, so I still get to do what I love, and since it isn’t my career I can do it at my leisure and not get tired of it. It’s not the way I want things to be, but that’s how life is, and this movie’s realistic approach to not always getting what you want is so rare for kids films. It helps kids gain some perspective and not expect everything in life to work out the way they want
I'm not sure if anyone's preserved the full thing, but I do remember that as part of the marketing for the movie, Pixar's promo team made an incredibly legit-looking website for Monsters University, like a real college's website.

13:07 they might not look particularly imposing like the others, but what they may lack in intimidation they more than make up for it in intelligence, they don't have to look that scary to get second place behind ROR in time for the beginning of the last competition which actually takes a lot of guts
The 3rd act of this movie is probably one of pixar's best
I'm one of the 5 people who prefer this over monsters inc tbh lol. Actually top 3 pixar movies for me even. Idk i loved it as a kid but i just feel like it's so relatable to me right now especially that I'm in college too. It's underrated and did not deserve all the flak it got.
There's gotta be more than 5 of us.
I prefer this movie too over the original. The lake scene is what cemented my love for this movie.
it's just simply better
Idk the college theme has been done forever. This was like a cartoon of Revenge of the nerds... Porkys and Animal house...the college movie was played out by 2013
@@gaba-goo3733but in an animation prequel? especially for pixar? this was ahead of its time
If I'm not mistaken fun fact: the orange monster who was on the cheating team that they stung was the same one who kept getting beat up and shaved by the monster fbi 😂😂 in the first one 17:19 here is the time stamp so you know what I mean
Randall’s origin is too funny.
I absolutely adore this movie. such a great message

One of my favorite sequel prequel movies ever, they just did this so perfect :)
This came out the year I started college and I felt that it was such a warm, comforting way to help me through feeling homesick and that transition period! ❤
I need a deep dive into Art's backstory that led him in jail the first time 😅
Monsters University is wholesome. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of this film! Brings back good memories of that year! 👍👍👍👍👍

The blue devils drum corps drumline actually did the percussion for this movie!
They’re considered the best of the best
Those scream canisters confirm that Doctor Sleep (and thus, The Shining) take place in the same universe as Monsters Inc.
The school design was inspired by UC Berkeley in northern California.
There's a resonance with the lines
"What are you doing in my room?"
"Your room, this is my...this is not my room" that I feel on a personal level sometimes.
The cupcakes in the version y'all watched were different from the one shown in US theaters. They spelled "Be My Pal" and when they fell on Randall's face, they spelled "Lame". Here, they're just faces and they fall on his face similarly
I'd rather have movies taking place in the past and in the same world than sequels. I would love to see other toys stories in the toy story world.
2:47 I just realized while listening, that's John Krasinski.
As someone who only just (literally yesterday) graduated from uni after a few years delay, thinking I would never get to this point, this film hits that little bit deeper right now.
they actually changed that sequence of the cupcakes falling on randall, I remember it spelling out ‘lame’ on his face.
I saw the international version once on a plane last week. I liked the “Lame” cupcakes
This was a great reaction, I can say with confidence that we would love more movie reactions like this.
Monsters University is specifically a mashup of the movies: Revenge of the Nerds, Accepted, American Pie 2, Animal House, and The Neighbors
14:16 Omg he's face is all red I've never seen people like that before. 😅😂
I always die at the scene of the slug character running late when the bell goes off 😂😂 it's so stupid
The MU alumni that gives Mike his hat. I’m almost 100% he goes insane inside that restaurant in Monsters Inc.
I love Tara. She’s so talented and for people that don’t know, she can sing her ass off, and play the guitar. Her page deserves more followers and she’s super nice. Go follow her people! Help out the good ones!
38:54 Schoolmaster always arrives at the most inopportune moment. 😂
Love the moment when the mom is in the car and turns on some heavy metal music. So damn funny.
Nice accidental harmony at 2:13
This movie is so underrated, and it’s better than M Inc. It’s more relatable and realistic in an amazing way, taking the viewer into this absurd, colorful, fantastical world, but then addressing the fact that you can build a life that makes you happy after FAILING to achieve your dreams.
I remember seeing this movie in the theaters in Qatar when I was 12 or 11 and thinking back then that this movie should’ve been the first one not knowing the concept of prequels back then
Good times
I still fully believe that this is, without a doubt, the most underrated Pixar film.
Si aunque el mensaje de la película es ser lo más realista posible aún cuando ocurre en un mundo de fantasía
the only big problem i had with this kovie was how they acted like mike was the only non-scary monster in the team like i mean other than sullivan all pf them looked adorable , i felt they should’ve came up with more creative ways for them to scare . (eg like how squishy didn’t need to roar)
8:34 Did they change this scene in the movie?
I remember originally the cupcakes hit his face and spell out either "Lame" or "Nerd"
This movie is honestly just so great! Not as good as the original sure but In no way bad
This movie feels like this was made for those kids who have grown up now and trying to figure out what to do, while monsters inc was a movie aimed towards the kids and parents
@@KenSahaja honestly rewatching it is actually helpful for where i am at life right now, its nice
Yay. Always happy to see Tara reacting with John.
I've never thought they could ever surpass the first movie. But they knock it out of the park with this one. I love Monster Inc.
You always hit the notes when you sing ring the bell 😂 is there any time where your voice cracks or something u guys gotta start over?? Lol
This is the Disney animated movie i remember from my younger days, from toy story, monster inc, big hero 6, moana, mulan, and many more before they lost their way soo sad..
DUDE, WHAT THE MONSTERS LEARN IS JUST HOW TO SCARE, THERE’S NO MATH, NO SCIENCE, NO ENGLISH, JUST SCARING, EASIEST CAMPUS EVER
22:25 Moms always has her kids back❤❤ FAMILY FIRST!😢
the slug (and what it represents irl) makes me sad everytime. everything else is amazing ^^
I'm totally convinced one of the reason this movie gets hated on is that people just don't like the message: you can do everything right, and still fail.
Creo que más bien la odian porque es una precuela y no una secuela normal
28:34 honestly Terri & Terry's way of scaring is pretty terrifying
It helps kids gain some perspective and not expect everything in life to work out the way they want
cant get over how gorgeous Tara's smile is 💓
"human children are extremely toxic" damn they predicted fortnite 4 years before it came out
(Apr 2024)
Cabin scene32:57
“Ur not the only failure here”
34:20 34:29
Nathan Fillion’s character had the best Scare in the whole series
Yeah
Loved your post reaction discussion (as well as the reaction).
15:38 reminds me of Ninja Turtles 2 when Keno is trying to infiltrate the Foot Clan.
I'm not sure if anyone's preserved the full thing, but I do remember that as part of the marketing for the movie, Pixar's promo team made an incredibly legit-looking website for Monsters University, like a real college's website.
