Pixar’s first full-blown romantic comedy is lovely. It’s not subtle with its fire and water metaphor for characters from different cultures falling for each other but it’s very heartfelt and sweet.
People were saying this was going to be generic and "Pixar's biggest flop", then they actually saw the movie and it turned out to be a great romantic comedy! Such a great time
i usually never listen to criotics since they tend give good movies bad scores and vice verse most of the time elemental is a underated gem in my book that will defenitly become a well known underdog master piece for future generations i predict
I noticed that when she was talking about the shop, it was in reference to her dad more than her. I thought that her joyfulness to take over the shop was because she was making her dad happy therefore making her happy. The line when she was trying to stop Wade from sending in the citations, but failed was something like, “Those tickets going through are gonna shut down the shop and my dad’s gonna die,” was a line that gave a subtle glimpse into her mindset. That and the way she always uses her element to weld things shut, expand things, or make glass also showed how her calling was towards something else. I’m not an immigrant, but I’ve seen and heard a lot of stories of parents immigrating over and starting a business with plans of passing it down to their children, but the child doesn’t want to take over or they will just to make the parents happy. Probably a reason why I picked up on it or guessed.
At least to me her dilemma felt pretty clear, even from the start, that she might not want to own the shop. Especially throughout the beginning and middle, it's pushed hard that that's what she was going to do when she grows up. Her dad made it feel like it had to happen, and she went with it. It makes a lot sense that as she got older, she realized she might not actually want to do what he does, even if it was subconscious.
i feel the same, as a kid she wanted to follow in her fathers footsteps so she was excited to mimic him, then as an adult she saw her fathers health getting worse and felt obligated to take over for his sake rather than hers, and as she says later she never stopped to ask herself what she wanted
Yeah I thought it was pretty clear too. Like sometimes you have one set option in life and until your presented with another you sometimes don’t consider a different path. For Ember it was all about the shop. It wasn’t until she saw a different and new path that she realized maybe I don’t want to run the shop.
It was pretty clear to me too. Ember was raised in the shop, it was established early on she never leaves their neighbourhood, so ofc she wanted to help her dad and felt responsible for taking over his work. Until she left to the city, then met Wade's family, is when she was presented an opportunity to actually do something else with her life - I felt that quite strongly, since it happened to me too :D
We have to look at this in a psychological manner. The shop was Ember's way of *CONNECTING* to her caregiver/cultural core/idol. You see her break his challenge, do things for him w.o second thoughts of selfishness, people pleasing patterns towards her father while failing to please everyone else(including her mother and customers) and this was not her fault. It was her father. He created a whole persona of work and family being mixed w.o any External options (happens often in first gen immigrants minority that is forced to contort into the current social systems "othered".) And W.O failure... The environment becomes Father's intentions towards the only child in the family. (I want you to remember Ember's dynamic with her mother... Notice the difference) Parental Incompetence often happens with STRESSED and UNPREPARED individuals becoming parents.
I love this movie so much. The animation on the fire, water, and air people is amazing and the powers and abilities they have are are very creative, I love how they created an entire original language for the fire people, the music is awesome, and I like the arc Ember goes through.
The animation looks great man and must be hard to animated an element like that. I just saw it a second time and still enjoyed it just a nice sweet love story.
I believe the story of Elemental was actually based off the experiences of the director, Peter Sohn, being a Korean immigrant to the US. I read about it shortly after watching the movie, and honestly, as a Korean-American myself, I can really see the similarity between the fire people and Koreans. The 'big bow' is literally a Korean thing to show respect, and the fire-related food being too hot for Wade is like how there's a lot of spicy Korean food. The whole 'your parents decide your future' thing is also VERY Asian, plenty of Asian kids grow up with very specific expectations from their parents
Interesting point of view! Growing up watching a lot of Bollywood movie, I see a lot of the visuals that actually remind me to India or South Asia culture. The colors. The instrument used in the songs. And yes, also the spicy food. Then again, I could be wrong (I'm South-East Asian btw).
Wow that's actually cool btw I also feel the same I feel like this also fits with Hispanic family's who originally were immigrants I feel like it's so cool how they represent how hard working immigrants are
you're spot on with this! there's a documentary on disney+ called "good chemistry" where sohn goes into growing up korean in new york city and marrying a non-korean and how that influenced the movie. it's a really nice doc, i highly recommend it!
My impression of Ember having a sudden realization of not running the shop and finding her own dream was bc the shop was all she knew. They established very quickly that she never went anywhere else and her parents and the shop was her entire life. And it wasn't until she met Wade, where she actually started to go out and explore and find out what the world around her is really about....and that there was more to life than what she knew. Her parents supported her taking over the shop because that was their dream, but it wasn't until others saw her talents that she overlooked as something special.
@@11ibiPixar President said it’ll be profitable through digital and merchandising sales which are always huge for Pixar Films. It’s currently at $458 Million and top projections say it could hit 500 before leaving theaters.
Im glad more people are viewing this movie, it was sadly slept on by many people in theatres. I really do hope we get an elemental show depicting the life of wade and ember.
it was a classic case of people judging a movie before they saw it, people thought it was just gonna be another forbidden love story so they didnt bother
last movie i saw in theatres was spiderman 2 back in 2004 so seeing a movie in threses is not in the cards for me ever i watched it downloaded since it is not on disney pklus yet and really loved it one of pixasrs best in many years
I’m so glad Disney and Pixar did a romance. I feel like we haven’t had one in a while and for kids, movies and tv may be the only way they see a healthy relationship and see acceptance to love who you love. Being independent is great but love and partnership is important too and we haven’t focused on it in media recently so I’m so glad to see a movie like this ❤️
I think they're wrong in saying there was NO conflict in Ember. In watching this movie 4 times in the first week. You'll realize that from the beginning Ember's light was there every time she shaped glass. Rewatch you'll see. This shows that she has a passion that she did not let shine when she was conforming to what she felt was right and what she HAD to do to be a good daughter. That's why her anger was constantly there. Because she always had that conflict but she was never honest until she met Wade. Also this movie was such a love letter to the elements and it's represented so much throughout the film. This movie was also STUNNING and I mean STU-NNING! In 3D. I saw it in 3D, 3 times. That really added to the emotional reaction to the movie. I still admit this movie gets better the more your watch it. I've been watching people react so much to it and I'm so glad they're appreciating it a lot. ❤❤❤
I honestly think that them not marketing this as an immigrant story hurt it's potential so much. When I told friends this they went oh that sounds good.
@@em5522I don't either, to be honest. I got bombarded with Ruby Gillman. But apparently, there's a bunch of cringe trailers that really annoyed people. Also, Clod is a big deal somehow
with all the bad publicity, the whole opening with Wade got me feeling this movie was gonna be as bad as people said but it becomes so amazing that when the credits started rolling i was emotional and just sat in silence. really like this movie a lot
They gave subtle hints that Ember had actual talents with her glass making abilities. They showed her multiple times fixing and mending things and it came so naturally for her, that she didn't even notice she was made for it until the question arose.
I understand the criticism about the idea of running the shop being bad wasn’t telegraphed more, BUT from experience I grew up being pushed to go one way with my life and I always bought into it and the stress and depression and anger it caused trying to live up to that was always hard. I never strayed from the idea that that is what I need to do. It wasn’t until life stopped during COVID and I had to sit with myself for once, I realized it’s not what I wanted and it’s what others wanted for me. My whole mentality changed in a matter of moments when the pieces clicked. So that turn didn’t surprise me. But I understand how that is not movie language and it can not be conveyed in the same way.
That's why critism towards movies that make things obvious are weird to me. Most people don't notice subtle thing in film, they usually have to be in someone's face. Then the observant get upset at how in your face it is. Can't win, honestly.
I think Wade is supposed to be like therapy for Ember where she has this hidden emotion and has no idea where its coming from so he helps her figure out something she didnt even know. I think the point is that the hint of her not wanting that was her anger but because she didnt know thats why she was so hot tempered we the audience didnt until Wade comes along and helps her figure that out.
This movie was so good. I relate with Ember's situation a lot, except my parents were more overbearing and less tolerant. However, the unspoken burden in feeling that you _have to_ repay your parents' sacrifice is still the same. The culture clash was also pretty relatable too, esp the frustration of an outsider not getting your situation beyond the surface level but it being too complex and frustrating for yourself, and too much so to explain well/satisfyingly so outsiders can understand. Sometimes, you just have to remind yourself that ppl are open to helping even a little, and even if they don't fully understand, that's not an attack on/dismissal of you. Shame the movie suffered from lack of promotion (didn't even know it was out until news abt its box office came out) and weird backlash.
Ember’s excitement about running the shop is to make her father proud. It’s this instinct to want to take over for tir parents after they’ve sacrificed so much for you and often you don’t notice that you’re not doing it for yourself. As a second gen immigrant myself whose family also owned a mom and pop shop for 45 years, there was a lot of pressure to always work and always be available and this underlying expectation that you’ll take over or run it. And you do it because it makes your family so happy and that brings you joy. As you get older, you can feel conflicted and not really know why. So her realizing she didn’t want to work the shop wasn’t out of nowhere at all. At least, it’s obvious to people who’ve been in this situation. If she really loved it, wanted it, she’d be more of a people person. Notice how everything she did was for her father. Not for the customers and not for the shop itself. Subconsciously she likely didn’t want to have to connect with customers the same way her father does so naturally. That’s why her temper was so bad.
I love that we've reached a point where creators from different cultures and ethnicities can create awesome works like this where they can bring their personal experiences in it and don't have to hide it.
We wanted to take our kid to a movie and this was the only one in theaters that made sense, so we watched it despite all the bad press about it. It's a really nice movie, had a lot of Inside Out vibes for me, and definitely deserves a lot more love than it's gotten. I watched Oppenheimer later in the day and felt like I had a pretty damn good day at the movies.
Yessss I’ve been waiting for this reaction to happen. Such a heartwarming movie that I’m glad got an insane box office comeback after a terrible opening.
Fun fact Wade and Ember being able to touch is based in real-life science. It's called the Leidenfrost effect which is when water like Wade touches a hot surface like Ember which creates a layer of steam that acts as an insulator, preventing Wade from vaporising and by extension, Ember from getting extinguished.
I can relate to this movie in terms of honoring your parents and culture, because I am the son and grandson of Jamaican and Guyanese immigrants and I hear particularly from my grandparents those talking points like find a good job and not forgetting your roots so I understand what Amber went through. The amination is 10/10, Pixar keeps doing amazing work, so glad you reacted to this guys.
I mean you guys kind of said it. This movie is from Embers pov. It's her story. So we don't know that Ember doesn't want to run the shop until Ember herself begins to realize it. She's spent her life with her dad telling her how great she's going to be running it and building up the expectation that she's supposed to take over. She didn't think to ask "what do I want" because it wasn't in the plan her dad gave her. I personally really love that the characters are so bright and flowy versus the background. It tells the audience that the characters are what's important and it shows us that Ember herself values people over objects (again, it's her story, her pov). It also explains why the emotional aspect is so weird. Ember heself isn't all that emotional except in anger.. until Wade. She's so wrapped up in trying to prove she's "a good daughter" that she's kinda blinded herself to everything else. Once she subconsciously embraces what Wade treaches her the story suddenly gets teally emotional and moves forward.
Really enjoyed this film. It was full of charm and was animated beautifully. This film has had an incredible comeback at the box office. It started off with a really small opening weekend and seems to be ending with a bigger Global box office then John Wick chapter 4 and a higher international box office than spider-verse.
I really like this movie. It was really cool and cute. Emotional even. Thankfully, this movie did way better globally. Really loved your reaction to Elemental. Glad you were open to it.
It might not be for everyone, but I think it's one of my favorite movies this year, though. I love Ember and Wade in the whole story. Edit: 41:03 really stuck with me for some reason.
FYI ~ The Leidenfrost Effect is most commonly demonstrated by using steam to insulate between hot and cold materials. MythBusters even tested it once by wetting their hands and thrusting them into molten lead - while momentary (due to the limited amount of water coating their hands), both reported to have barely felt any significant warmth. It's interesting how they used this between Wade and Ember (beings of literal water and fire) to show how they can indeed contact one another without harm to either.
I think the fact that this was said to be a bad movie clouded your ability to read the subtle storytelling. Which it is not actually subtle cuz it's a kid's movie. Like ik Ember was always happy and excited to help her dad but what kid isn't? But more importantly is her reaction when her dad does let her take control, she is obviously not in her flow state, the same way Wade hates his job because it makes him cry. But unlike Ember, he understands his emotional state so he tells us he's been going from job to job, and it's because his dad died. Our main character finds out that her emotions come from somewhere and are telling her something about herself that she never even gave a thought to cuz her mission, her goal, her purpose was always there from even before she could remember. That's why it takes someone from outside her "bubble" 😅 to even notice something is wrong, that this isnt normal.
This movie has a lot of meaning. Especially because this is a dedication of its creator, Peter Sohon, to his parents who died during its production. Ember's life is inspired by Peter's own experience, as he comes from a family of immigrants. And Ember and Wade's love story also draws some inspiration between Peter and his wife, Anna. Even Ember and Wade's personalities matches their owns, with Peter being a crybaby like Wade and Anna having a temper like Ember.
I didn’t know if y’all noticed but I thought it was a cool design choice to make all of the fire peoples close be made out of chain-male it’s really noticeable with Embers coats and cloak and is just a great visual aspect of the animation
36:38 While fire and water cannot co-exist, the lifeforce that allows Ember and Wade to exist in the first place is what makes them competible. This is the theory I'm going with.
This movie is incredibly underrated. Saw it when it was in theaters and it was one of the sweetest movies of the year. The animation, visuals, and world-building were all incredible, but the moments between Wade and Ember were some of the more cathartic, emotional parts of the film. Very well done. Is it perfect? No. But it is sweet and romantic in all the best ways.
So I watched this on my own earlier and HOLY SHIT this movie was very, unexpectedly emotional. I'm not the type to cry during movies but this had me SOBBING!! Ember and Wade are unbelievably cute together, like it's ridiculous how fucking cute they are! I did not plan on crying today 🥲
I seriously loved this movie,i honestly teared up at the part where wade tells ember how much he loved her and was willing to die there for her to live.Their moment when they finally touched hands made me think of that one part in tarzan when him and jane touched hands.Different yet the same🔥💧💞Also originally they were gonna have a child and they were gonna be steam but they decided not to put that in,wish they did😭
I feel like you overlooked some of the dialogue. The dialogue itself is what tells you that Ember doesn't want to run the shop, it's subtle, because she is repressing her emotions and thoughts, but it is there. She never once says that she wants to save the shop for herself, it's all about how upset her dad is going to be, how it's his dream and how much they sacrificed for her. She doesn't refer to it as "our" shop or "my" shop, but only her dad's shop. They also set it up with her getting very easily upset with customers whenever her dad tried to give her more responsibility. She was fighting herself because she didn't want to be there. She was happy to help her dad out, but struggled with being left in charge. She was subconsciously self-sabotaging with not being "ready" to take over, but then feeling guilty for not being ready because she didn't want to let her dad down. The storytelling is definitely there, but it is subtle.
I just love watching you guys together. You are both so sweet and funny. Especially when you watch animation and/ or emotional movies. Gregory, I'm glad you didn't become a doctor, and instead, you're doing this 😅❤
The director has stated that the representation isn't supposed to be overly specific, but that he drew a lot of inspiration from his time growing up in New York to Korean immigrant parents. He also dedicated the film to them, since they passed away during the development of this film.
Saw the premiere of the movie at the yearly Annecy animation festival and it was awesome. Wasn’t gonna see it because their was a huge crowd waiting in line but after all we managed to get in. At the premiere we also managed to get a glimpse of a new pixar show called win or lose. We saw an episode about a single mom trying to handel a teen, this is one of the stories. Not gonna lie it was pretty nice! That same week tuesday was insane… They give us a first look at an animé lord of the rings show. Damn, the memories coming back. We saw Elemental the last day of or first Animation festival, a vacation to remember!
Definitely on a list of 'recent films that didn't deserve to bomb'. Sadly Disney kinda just gave up on marketing it, but it's good to see it's getting more attention
Elemental was such an unexpected pleasure! I saw this as a final film in a local cinema that recently closed it doors for good, expecting it to be just a film my daughter would enjoy. Previews didn't have me excited but as someone who struggles with their temper I connected with Ember on that level, and the way she was affected by the other elements/different perspectives and the opportunities presented to her was beautiful.
I don’t know if this helps but the reason she was happy with the shop is because it was the only thing she ever knew. She didn’t know about glass making as a career or the city and other stuff so she only looked forward to the shop because the only thing she had was the shop
It's really there, Gregg... Her temper and her inability to be GOOD at the part of the job that requieres her to be patient and to deal with difficult customers it's the clue. She had NO patience AT ALL for that, that's the clue. She really, deeep down, wasn't into it... that's the reason for the temper thing. She was "inception-ed" into thinking she wanted to take over the shop because that's what her father wanted. And, Ember, as a little kid, tought she wanted that too because it's all she knew. I really loved how subtle this movie was about it.
You summed it up perfectly Exactly, in part due to who she was, she was always prone to losing her temper while dealing with difficult customers, despite her best efforts to keep her instinct in check (“keep calm, make connection)
This love story always reminds me of sharkboy and lava girl because they were the original fire and water love that brought a kid with both of their attributes so I am really mad at not being able to see that for wade and ember
I genuinely don’t understand why this movie was poorly viewed? This was adorable, yea some parts were okay but overall? Super heart warming. The visuals alone would get me to recommend this to someone. Not to mention all the tiny scientific details with their elements!!! GOSH the glass, the color change due to minerals, the boiling water, so many cool little things that just make this world more real!
I love the change in Ember’s color when she dances on the crystals. It’s beautiful and such a small shout out to how fire actually changes colors with certain chemicals.
Elemental was conceived and directed by Peter Sohn, whose parents were Korean immigrants in the '70s Bronx... So I guess Ember's family may be Korean too ? really hot/spicy food ; biiiiig respect for the parents ; the bow... ? Okay, that can be others cultures too 😅 But the film is now the more successful Pixar film in Korea & Peter Sohn say I take a lot inspirations from his family 😊 I really love that movie... I cried a loooot at the end, like our hero 🤣 I guess I'm a water-girl 😅
Oh I don't know that ! It's really cool ! I'm French so I watch it with French dub (don't have the choice in cinema for animation...). After verification, like always, dub cast is just French & White actors because in France, apparently, we don't have dubbing actor or people of color.... I guess ? 🥴@@RYMAN1321
1:00:15 Peter Sohn (the director) actually had a small documentary or something on his story and you can really see the similarities between his story and the movie. Oh and random fact, Russell's character design from Up was slightly based on Peter Sohn lol.
I loved this movie! I don't think Ember not wanting to run the shop came out of left field. We see her lose her temper a handful of times already, and when Wade explains what he gets out of his own temper, it immediately planted the seed in me that running the shop wasn't what she wanted. She wanted to want to run the shop, and she was angry at the part of her that was rejecting it the whole time.
Wow this was my first time seeing this movie i seen the trailers and fan art but now after seeing it I really enjoy this movie and got pretty emotional at the end 😢 also i wish we got more dialogue to and the animation looked amazing pixar always coming through with the god tier animation and i wish we got to see more elements 💙💯
As an Asian only daughter and a pathological people pleaser, I can relate with her repressed feelings. She felt like it is her responsibility to make her parents "happy" to be a "good daughter" to repay their sacrifices. so thinking of doing anything else feels like a sin, even showing signs of it. I guess yeah, it still came out though, through her temper.
Ember didn't even realize she didn't want to run the shop, until she did. But there were signs. Yes, she lit up whenever her dad wanted to trust her with it, but that was because she thought it was his dream, and she thought she wanted to take it over. Maybe I've just worked enough retail tp get it, but actually interacting with customers can be infuriating. Thus her anger "issues", thus yeah, actually maybe this isn't what I want.
Ember is representing Asian Americans. East Asian/Korean specifically. The hot food kinda gives it away, and Koreans tend to be very light in their skin, so when Ember’s picture was taken, you could only see the light. Been a lil while since I watched the whole movie, so I don’t remember all the “easter eggs”
30:00, Director Peter Sohn said that Ember is meant to be based on his own experiences growing up in a Korean immigrant family. So most likely, she's meant to be Korean.
Good thing my love for kids movies brought me to this amazing movie, since I first watched it on June 18th and didn't look or pay attention at the reviews at first.
I definitely didn't give this movie any thought when it was coming out, but watching it you guys, it is a pretty good movie. A little cliche, but fun. And i agree that they were really creative with their elemental abilities. I typically see myself as more of a fire person. I had a lot of drive and vision, as well as a very hot temper that i had to learn to control. Im not really comfortable in water, i like the outdoors, but i dont go to parks or such that often, and though i like flying, i did grow up with asthma so air wasnt always my strongest quality. (Fyi: Some of what i said is meant to be comedic)
@@Snowfallofnightyep. It grossed 307 mil internationally and Spiderverse grossed 305 mil. Ofc there is a 200+ million difference in the worldwide box office with ATSV grossing 680+ mil and Elemental grossing 450+ mil ,but it's interesting that all the difference was totally domestic.
I love this movie so much more than I thought I would. I adore Ember and Wade! One of my favorite movie couples and one of my favorite romcoms in recent years. Ember is just so sassy and hotheaded and determined and Wade is so soft and sweet and supportive. They’re everything! And the song written for them, Steal the Show, is a banger. The animation is 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾 I think Ember’s conflict with the shop is meant to be on the more subtle end. She’s forcing the desire on herself, but she herself is never capable of doing it right. Like subconscious self-sabotage. I was really surprised and touched by the immigrant story here.
I felt that her desire to not take over the shop was expressed by her impatience with the customers. She didnt need to struggle endlessly to create her artworks, she was able to just do it and beautifully too. The father expressed his passion in how he handled the customers. One of those times where the writing was expressed in an unspoken way. I believe any hints towards it would have lessened the impact it had later on. This was the first movie to make me cry in 10 years, the visuals were great but the storytelling unmatched. Turning Red had a similar theme but the writing is on different levels. The two central characters were almost perfect personifications of masculine and feminine, through a unique perspective sure, but true to its core. I felt that more could have been unearthed about the feminine, but then again how much do we really understand about it? For what we do know however, I think it is a powerful representation.
Disney thought they were gonna get me but NOPE! I REFUSED to accept that Wade was gone so I didn't shed a tear for him and I'm glad I didn't because those tears would have been wasted lol I did cry in other scenes tho, especially when Ember bowed to her father at the very end. Disney/Pixar always gets me eventually 😅 thanks for an amazing reaction Tara and Greg! ❤
Ember's 'race' is sorta based on Middle Eastern and Southern Asian cultures. Although, the director is Korean himself and used most of his culture on it. He just gave the image of Middle Eastern on their homeland and bits of southern asian styles once in the city like with their shop and what they do.
I think it makes aense. We learn that fire is dabgerous and we cant get near it. She thibks that everything she touches gets destroyed, not realizing fire also creates beautiful things, but it would make sense for her to be closed off and unapproachable, shoving her emotions down until they just burst.
I think the lack of clear motive in Ember not wanting to run the shop early on was fine and played well into the reveal when she learns she doesn't want to. If she was more openly opposed to running the shop, it would've just come off as angst or ignorance when she has the emotional reveal, cause it would've been extremely clear to us while she's "surprised". Here, she just knows something's setting her off about the shop, but she doesn't know what, and it takes introspection and exploration in order to process those emotions and discover that it is just because she's just living by her family's wishes.
I love this movie so much! It really pulls at the heart strings in a few different ways. It probably helped that the Pixar short that preceded the movie in theaters was from UP and had me in tears, but I really enjoyed a new movie with a strong love focus. I feel like so many lately have been getting away from the classic love at first site but end up sacrificing romance almost entirely by focusing on self growth and independence. Truly a lovable and beautiful movie.
Really wanted them to expand more on how rhe elements work well together but I didn't mind the romance even though the dad is a whole lot controversial about her daughter liking a water guy. To put yourself to be obligated to take over your father's legacy but not thinking on what you want, but having a hard time connecting with people at the same is hard to do she never knew what she wanted until the waterboy's mom gave her an idea. So this is more of finding yourself which they could've left the romance out and expanded on not just finding herself out but how important each element are with each other. But that's just me. A pretty solid movie reminds me of inside out mixed with zootopia ember partnering up with someone that everyone gets along with while ember is someone that alot of people despise go put on a adventure to solve a big problem but they hook up at the end. Like fr.
One of the things I really like as an on-the-nose metaphor is the hostile architecture and microagressions. The city is literally set up like it's going to kill her while being designed for everyone else's comfort. It's beautiful to us, to her it's a death trap. Also it's a good choice for fire to be the odd one out. It IS an element in nature - wildfires are a part of the landscape - but we think of it as a human thing and set apart.
Wade and Ember alongside Rapunzel and Eugene is one of the best couples of Disney. Their chemistry felt so real and not forced. The both couples are also not a cliche love story.
I feel like they were also playing on zodiac traits as well like water signs are stereotypically emotional and fire signs are stereotypically high tempered? That was my only reasoning for all of crying Wade did lol
I dunno if anyone else told you already in the comments, or if you guys already figured it out... but according to the director Peter Sohn, Amber's story is a deeply personal one based on the Korean immigrant experience, since he drew on his own roots as the son of Korean immigrants.
This movie was absolutely gorgeous in the theater. The world-building reminded me of a Miyazaki movie like Spirited Away, or Kiki's Delivery Service. (seriously) Coupled with Thomas Newman's score, it created this other land you wanted to live in. I think part of what might've hurt Elemental's box office was the underwhelming trailer. I personally thought it looked boring as hell, and I only went after seeing some positive internet reviews. Even the animation seemed underwhelming in the trailer, and that was the movie's greatest strength.
I actually love the way they did Ember's arc realizing she didn't want to run the shop. She was raised to believe that's what she was meant to do. And I think she believed it until she actually had to do the job. The first time she was put in her father's shoes, she didn't enjoy it. She was immediately enraged. It wasn't what she thought it was going to be. That was at the very beginning of the movie. She didn't fully realize it wasn't what she wanted until she was presented with other options. Wade's family pointed out her talent. And that talent was also showcased from the beginning of the movie. For me, it was all more relatable than if she always knew it's not what she wanted. Growing up, I was planning on doing things because I was expected to do them. It took time to realize that I never really wanted to do such things for myself.
This film was really charming altough i wished there was more going on in the story this is still a very heartfelt one and im glad its director manage to express he's story of being a inmigrant
Maybe, if you've had time to think about it since your immediate post viewing reactions, you can see how Ember's dream not being running the store did not come out of left field. from the beginning she is easily set off by the customers and throughout the story it is suggested that her temper is trying to tell her something… And that would be that she never had considered or explored what her own dreams might be.
Honestly when you've been pushed to do something and to believe it's your calling, you can stay thay way for a long time and not even realize you may not want thatx. In my expereince, you realize it either when you are presented with a different possibility or when you're really close to achieving that thing and making it part of your life. Then you realize it.
This movie was horribly marketed and looked a bit like an inside out knock off but I was so surprised when I saw it, and the love story is so intense and emotional and well done. Very underrated movie, wish it did better in the box office
So there are clues that she didn't want to run the shop but to see them you kind have to be thinking of inside out. Obviously Embers fire changes colors while she is standing on the minerals but it also changes colors other times like when she sees the Vivisteria flowers with Wade she burns bright yellow similar to the color of Joy from inside out. She also turns purple when she loses her temper, the color of fear

Pixar’s first full-blown romantic comedy is lovely. It’s not subtle with its fire and water metaphor for characters from different cultures falling for each other but it’s very heartfelt and sweet.
I just saw it as an entertaining “Romeo and Juliet” type story.
Just like Miles and Gwen
Wal-e was also a full-blown romantic comedy imo...

Yeah, nowadays people base their opinions on critics who don't know how to do their jobs anymore.
They have no talk back for elemental 2 hahahaha

Well said
At least to me her dilemma felt pretty clear, even from the start, that she might not want to own the shop.
Same here. I understand Emder's dilemma of not really owning the shop. I had something like that when I was little and growing up.
Notice the difference)
Parental Incompetence often happens with STRESSED and UNPREPARED individuals becoming parents.
I love this movie so much. The animation on the fire, water, and air people is amazing and the powers and abilities they have are are very creative, I love how they created an entire original language for the fire people, the music is awesome, and I like the arc Ember goes through.
Yes when people hating this because its flop its Actually good and the Best one Disney made
The animation looks great man and must be hard to animated an element like that. I just saw it a second time and still enjoyed it just a nice sweet love story.
BTS 🖤💘🖤

I’m so glad Disney and Pixar did a romance. I feel like we haven’t had one in a while and for kids, movies and tv may be the only way they see a healthy relationship and see acceptance to love who you love. ❤❤❤

Thankfully it proved to have legs and ended up with a decent box office return by the end of its run.
🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍
So happy that Greg and Tara are reacting to this movie! The visuals are stunning! 👍

Such an incredibly beautiful movie
"Steal the Show" I love that song so muccccch!! its deep meaning, rythym, and lyrics hit me so much.
I don't care what people say, this, to me, felt like classic top tier Pixar movie like when I was a kid. Haven't felt that since maybe Toy Story 3.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE! It's a romcom for sure. Also, that song. And Wade. How can I get a Wade in real life?!
I seriously loved this movie,i honestly teared up at the part where wade tells ember how much he loved her and was willing to die there for her to live.Their moment when they finally touched hands made me think of that one part in tarzan when him and jane touched hands.Different yet the same🔥💧💞Also originally they were gonna have a child and they were gonna be steam but they decided not to put that in,wish they did😭
Yup I thought about Tarzan in that moment too
I feel like you overlooked some of the dialogue.

You summed it up perfectly
Exactly, in part due to who she was, she was always prone to losing her temper while dealing with difficult customers, despite her best efforts to keep her instinct in check (“keep calm, make connection)
? Okay, that can be others cultures too 😅 But the film is now the more successful Pixar film in Korea & Peter Sohn say I take a lot inspirations from his family 😊

I think her family is Asian influenced as all of them are voiced by Asian Americans as well
Oh I don't know that ! It's really cool !
I'm French so I watch it with French dub (don't have the choice in cinema for animation...).

The way she couldn't handle the customers was a subtle hint she didn't actually want to run the shop

Because they’re cry babies.
Elemental just passed Across the spiderverse at the international box office thats crazy
Really?
Stop fuckin lying
@@Snowfallofnight ATSV 305.9 mil, Elemental 307.2 mil
@@Snowfallofnightyep. It grossed 307 mil internationally and Spiderverse grossed 305 mil. Ofc there is a 200+ million difference in the worldwide box office with ATSV grossing 680+ mil and Elemental grossing 450+ mil ,but it's interesting that all the difference was totally domestic.
mmm there is a lot of Bots for some reason.
The animation is 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
I think Ember’s conflict with the shop is meant to be on the more subtle end. She’s forcing the desire on herself, but she herself is never capable of doing it right. Like subconscious self-sabotage. I was really surprised and touched by the immigrant story here.
First thought was Roxy saying "~the elements ~" from the final destination vid 😂😂
41:55 the captions said "the shop was never the dream, you murdered dreams" honestly I thought that was hilarious
That actually makes sense.
Also, her voice actress is Leah Lewis is Asian American as well .
This movie was so visually stunning! Really enjoyed this, great video!!

You guys see the sign that one cloud is holding? Says "Kick their gas". XD
WALL-E was technically a movie with a love story in it.
I finally watched this movie yesterday and super confused why it did so bad in the box office... This became one of my favorite pixar movies!!
It started off slow, but has grown to $458 million worldwide and is now Pixar's highest grossing post pandemic film
This movie was really good the story surprised me a bit and ember and wade are great
37:21 That scene legit made me tear up (THAT'S LOVE😢❤❤)
41:22 I legit SOBBED when that happened!!!!😭
This film was really charming altough i wished there was more going on in the story this is still a very heartfelt one and im glad its director manage to express he's story of being a inmigrant
In every Disney movie they like to reference their other up coming movies like Easter eggs
Yes!
This.
It’s clear that the pressures of dealing with the public were too much for her to handle, despite her best efforts
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I don't have any expectations about this movie but when I watched it it made me cry so much. I can relate with Ember😭
Honestly when you've been pushed to do something and to believe it's your calling, you can stay thay way for a long time and not even realize you may not want thatx. In my expereince, you realize it either when you are presented with a different possibility or when you're really close to achieving that thing and making it part of your life. Then you realize it.
When Wade died I was like they did not just pull a Bing Bong again and yeah they didn't...
There was actually a deleted scene where ember and wade returned in the end with a child that was white fire. His name was supposed to be Vapor.
People slept on this one, glad some slowly caught on though. Hope it does better digitally.
Love this movie so much the animation and the humor On Point in my opinion
This movie was horribly marketed and looked a bit like an inside out knock off but I was so surprised when I saw it, and the love story is so intense and emotional and well done. Very underrated movie, wish it did better in the box office
So there are clues that she didn't want to run the shop but to see them you kind have to be thinking of inside out. Obviously Embers fire changes colors while she is standing on the minerals but it also changes colors other times like when she sees the Vivisteria flowers with Wade she burns bright yellow similar to the color of Joy from inside out. She also turns purple when she loses her temper, the color of fear
Seriously this movie’s graphics and lighting is so pretty
