A couple things. You move market tiles to the bottom of the stack after selling to the market.When you return a family member to prison, you gain a bonus card OR 3 lira (not both). When taking bonus cards with the Caravansary action, you can also draw cards from the top of the discard pile.
You can also draw from the Discard pile? That's actually really handy to know.Played it last weekend and ad a blast, missed some rules you pointed out but still fun. Weird little game, lots of rules everywhere but simple once they all click. Thanks Rodney!
11:15 Yup, you got the most misinterpreted rule in Istanbul correctly. There's this practice of "Zakat", which is a mandatory charitable contribution for a moslem who meet the necessary amount of wealth. It's very common to give it to a local mosque. So, it's thematic! :)

I've played this game like 40 times and I can't believe how many rules we were playing wrong (mosque tile acquisition; not needing to bring back all your assistants at the fountain; moving neutral merchants in a two-player game)... that's embarrassing :/ Thanks for the help, Rodney!
THANKS FOR THE DETAIL WALKTHROUGH: Before watching this vid the complexity of the game detered me from putting it on my next game to get roster, now its back on.
Thanks Rodney for another very clearly presented rules explanation. Not to nit-pick, more of an FYI for anyone learning the game from this video, there is one minor rule that was missed. There is another special rule involving The Fountain. If there are other merchants there when you move to The Fountain, you do not need to pay them 2 Lira. You are essentially exempt from having to pay rival merchants at The Fountain.
Wow! I am speechless. I've already bought so many board games recently that I think I like, but they were a little bit disappointing, although not that bad, but I still want something more. This was a somewhat random watch, even though I don't own the game. But the game looks so good that I want to buy it already. Next time before I buy a game, I will definitely look here first and then decide if I really like that game.
Holy moly.. you must have read my mind! I was hoping you would do a video for Istanbul. I'm going to buy the special bundle package quite soon. I've been trying to get this game for a while. It was out of print I guess? or just not distributed well in Canada. Regardless I found a great place to get it locally, so I'll be happy :D
Thanks for such a clear explanation. However I am still confused on two things: how exactly the assistants work, and how/when you can play bonus cards. I understand you play one (or more?) on the special tile that has all of them, but can you play them at other times too? Or at any time you want?
Hey Kaduzy, the video doesn't say you have to play the bonus cards at the special tile (it's just on screen, because that was the last tile I was talking about) - you can play them no matter where they are :) As for assistants, I'm not sure how to explain it clearer than the video (sorry if it wasn't clear enough). You are either picking up or dropping off assistants in order to be able to use the features of the tiles. If you can't pick up or drop off one, then you can't use the tile.
Hello, great video and really explanative! However, I am not sure about some things, if you could help me please: 1) When going to the fountain, you don't pay if other merchants are there, right? 2) In caravansary, can you pick 2 cards only from the discard pile? 3) Is there some "special" action if you get your family member to the fountain? Because I read in the comments something about every assistant going to the police station... Thanks!
1) Correct! 2) Yep. 3) I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, so it's hard to answer this one. Do you have a direct quote of the comment you're referring to?
The quote of the question is: "Is it true that when you move your family member to the fountain, you could collect all your assistants in the polive station?"
@@kikskolar2087 When you go to the fountain, you return any number of your Assistants to your Merchant stack (no matter where they are, even in the police station). I'm not exactly sure what "special action" you might be thinking of, so I'm not sure if this helps or not.
When you're at the wainwright and you bought your last extension, do you get your ruby immediately, or on your next turn? (added): I have the same question with the 2 mosques, after you bought your 2nd (and last) card, do you get your ruby immediately or after the next time you get to the mosque?

There is definitely a lot to this probably simple game. Thanks for another great vid! :) *EDIT:* I thought how to earn rubies at either Mosque was not mentioned. I watched through the video again, and those rules were covered. 🤐
2 questions; -What if i have no assistant with me and i am more than 2 steps away from fountain (have no move 3-4 step cards) -On the markets to get the tokens, let's say the next card requires 4 supplies and give 1 away. Showing 4 avaliable slots and give 1 away is enough? Or all 4 slots should be full and give 1 away?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
great video. this video really helped me on clarifying many doubts i had regarding the rules for playing Istanbul. when rolling the dice to determine the place for the governor & smuggler, the dice result indicates which number that is mentioned on the place? the number on the middle (as shown in the video), the number on the left or the number on the right (the large brown number as mentioned in the rules)? thank you!
It doesn't really matter, as long as you're consistent with which one you use. Later printings of the game removed all the smaller numbers, and just kept the larger number, so if you want to just use the large number, that's probably best.
i like your work so much after watching your video i even bought a ticket to ride Europe which was amazing can you please suggest me which one should i buy century spice road or istanbul?
Hey Parth, so glad you're enjoying the videos! I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for! I have videos for both of those games so I'd suggest checking them out and seeing if one appeals to you more.
For tiles where you are able to buy things, for example the Wainwright, Gemstone dealer, Mosque, ect.. Are you only able to buy one thing or are you able to buy as many as you can if you have enough resources to do so?
Hey Rita, thanks for the interest! I do hope to get some gameplay back to the channel, but with COVID that's been pretty much impossible (and one kid is away at college and the other is older as well and very busy with school and their own extra curricular activates).
You did not cover the "You don’t have to pay other Merchants at the Fountain". My question is: There are encounters in the fountain? You do not pay other merchants, but can you interact with the other tokens (Family Members, Governor and The Smuggler)?
Good morning 🌞 Quick question, if you move your merchant to a tile without dropping/picking up an assistant, do you still get to take that tile action or no?
Can I just check - if you go to the police station and put your family member on a space - on a future go can you ever use the family member again or do you have to wait until that family member is sent back to the police station to go to that space again to use him? ie if they are never sent back to the police station are they only used that once? Thanks
Hi. Thanks for your video. 1.Is it true that when you move your family member to the fountain, you could collect all your assistants in the police station? 2. can you do carvansaray tile action if you do not move your merchant two times in two of your turns in a row?
1. That is my understanding. 2. To do the action of a tile, you just have to end your move there, it doesn't matter how many moves it took. Hope that helps.
2. No.You must move 1 or 2 spaces, and as Rodney points out you CANNOT come back to where you started. So you will not end up at the Caravansary twice in a row.
6:10 So just to clarify, you 𝑐𝑎𝑛 choose not to pay another merchant if on the same tile but you just won't get to use the effects of the tiles, correct?
one of the bonus cards lets you not move your merchant stack in the 1st phase of the turn ("your merchant stays at his current place but you have to use an assistant again"). my question is, in case we dropped off one of the assistants there in the previous turn, should we collect it or drop another one off using this bonus card in the new turn?
I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Say I have my merchant on Great Mosque and a servant each on Post Office and Fabric Warehouse. When I take my move action (1 to 2 spaces) am I able to move 2 spaces over to the Fabric Warehouse and passing over the Post Office tile without having to pick the servant from the Post Office up, so then I would just be picking up the servant at the Fabric tile and just leaving the servant at the Post Office there.
hi thank you for a great video. iv just bought this game and I'm struggling with one part. The family member. Once you have used the family member do you have to wait for it to be captured and sent back to prison before you can use it again. I have the big box version and it doesn't properly explain it. thanks x
Great video! I only have one comment on the rules. The rulebook states, that you should use the big brown number to denote the new Place for a token when rolling the dice. You use the middle number in the video? Am I reading the rules wrong?
There have been a few different editions of the rule book. You're probably nor reading wrong. The newest editions of the game only have a single number on the tiles for that matter!
When moving, if you aren't dropping a token off, or picking one back up, you get to do nothing else on your turn, so you definitely need to go back for them. The assistant tokens let you perform the action of the space you are on. Hope that helps.
I'm not able to queue up the video right now, but if you check the description you'll find a clickable index that details the section of the video you're looking for.
I shot this long enough ago, I don't remember the rules confidently, but I do know this video explains how family members get returned for use later, so as long as you watch the whole video, you'll come across that.
@@WatchItPlayedI watch the whole video but only 13:57 if another merchant (blue) encounters another family (yellow), then the yellow fam member goes back to police station. I wanted clarification if there were was a blue merchant could recover blue family member, for example. Is there a way to do that?
@@m.a.2649 Sorry I can't give a more detailed answer (as I can't re-watch the video right now), but in short: if there was another way to reclaim them, the video would have covered it, so if the video doesn't explain another way to recover it, then there isn't one. Hope that helps.
I might be going mad but are the sultans palace and the large market the wrong way round in the setup? I've only played this a few times but now worried I may have been playing that wrong. At 1:21.

2) Yep.

(added): I have the same question with the 2 mosques, after you bought your 2nd (and last) card, do you get your ruby immediately or after the next time you get to the mosque?
Immediately.
i know i'm a bit late, but here are the expected outcomes for every number you can choose in the tea house:
if you don't have the fabric tile from the small mosque, these are the expected value in lira for each number you can choose:
3 -> 2.97 lira
4 -> 3.83 lira
5 -> 4.5 lira
6 -> 4.89 lira
7 -> 4.92 lira (usually best)
8 -> 4.5 lira
9 -> 3.94 lira
10 -> 3.33 lira
11 -> 2.75 lira
12 -> 2.28 lira
keep in mind this doesn't mean "always pick 7", sometimes a 6 that's a little safer is better than a riskier (albeit more efficient) 7
if you DO have the fabric tile from the small mosque, you get a nice boost on the amount of lira you can get (this is assuming you use the tile in the best way possible):
3 -> 3 lira
4 -> 4 lira
5 -> 5 lira
6 -> 5.97 lira
7 -> 6.77 lira
8 -> 7.13 lira (usually best)
9 -> 6.75 lira
10 -> 5.56 lira
11 -> 3.44 lira
12 -> 2.55 lira
Third times a charm 👌
I think that did it :)
Great refresher!

0:34 no human can apply stickers that evenly. 😂 Rodney is a robot confirmed?
Possibly!
Thanks for the video, I bought the big box
Hope you have a great time with it Leo!
Good morning 🌞 Quick question, if you move your merchant to a tile without dropping/picking up an assistant, do you still get to take that tile action or no?
Good morning to you Kelly - you'll find that covered here: ua-cam.com/video/00YbrFbhqow/v-deo.html Hope that helps!
Can I just check - if you go to the police station and put your family member on a space - on a future go can you ever use the family member again or do you have to wait until that family member is sent back to the police station to go to that space again to use him? ie if they are never sent back to the police station are they only used that once? Thanks
You won't be able to use that family member again until they are sent back to the prison (because another player has encountered them).
Can you teach us how to play catan?
Great video explaination as usual Rodney! Thanks a lot
I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Can we action tile twice in one movement phase?
Not quite sure what you're asking.
Right, your turn just immediately ends.
Thank you!
Very good tutorial 👍🏿
Thank you Lara!
Nice video. Convinced me to buy the digital edition. :). Thanks, Rodney.
Have a great time playing!
So you can only take an action at a place if you drop off or pick up an assistant, correct?
Correct.
Do we take family member reward (sent to police station) of 3 Lira or bonus card from the player or general area?
From the general supply.
one of the bonus cards lets you not move your merchant stack in the 1st phase of the turn ("your merchant stays at his current place but you have to use an assistant again"). my question is, in case we dropped off one of the assistants there in the previous turn, should we collect it or drop another one off using this bonus card in the new turn?
I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Quick question: can the governor and the smuggler be at the same space during set up?
Yep!
You only drop off or pick up from the final space you are moving to.
@@WatchItPlayed Perfect thanks.
hi thank you for a great video. iv just bought this game and I'm struggling with one part. The family member. Once you have used the family member do you have to wait for it to be captured and sent back to prison before you can use it again. I have the big box version and it doesn't properly explain it. thanks x
That is correct, you have to wait for someone to capture it, before you can use it again. Hope that helps, have a good time playing!
@@WatchItPlayed thank you that seems to make alot more sense 🤣🤣
Great teach!
Thanks Ben, appreciate you checking it out!
What's the purpose of leaving your token behind? You never really have to go back to it do you? I'm lost on that part.
When moving, if you aren't dropping a token off, or picking one back up, you get to do nothing else on your turn, so you definitely need to go back for them. The assistant tokens let you perform the action of the space you are on. Hope that helps.
@@WatchItPlayed that does! Thank you very much. Sorry for missing that portion. Love your videos, sir!
One question: when do you use your bonus cards?
I'm not able to queue up the video right now, but if you check the description you'll find a clickable index that details the section of the video you're looking for.
Watch It Played Sure, I must have missed that sentence.
Using your example at 11:04 of the blue family member, is there a way to recover it in order to send the fam member to another tile later?
@@WatchItPlayed Appreciate you taking the time to reply nonetheless. Thank you so much Rodney
Hey Rodney, is there any reason why one would not summon all of their assistants back to them when their merchant returns to the fountain?
I can't think of one off the top of my head :)
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks! Love your videos, keep up the great work!
Cool game
Hello, what are the small numbers for?
I forget, it had something to do with alternative arrangement patterns, but this was modified in newer printings.
I'm just asking. I just have the version that doesn't have the small numbers anymore. There are only the big ones, that's why it surprised me
Hope you can teach us the new Batman Chronicles by Monolith.

I might be going mad but are the sultans palace and the large market the wrong way round in the setup? I've only played this a few times but now worried I may have been playing that wrong. At 1:21.
There are a variety of ways to set the game up - there are no hard and fast rules, so if you're set it up differently, you aren't playing wrong.
@@WatchItPlayed Yes, but if you're putting them in order by the middle numbers (as you said to do for the first game), the Sultan's Palace (13) should come before the Large Market (14).
@@Ashebrethafe Yep, those got switched. Doh!
can you do how to play: Root?
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, oh Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks.
UA?
TMBG!
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
@@listen2iggy New Amsterdam didn't exist for very long. Constantinople for about 1200 years approx. Before it got conquered and turned into a muslim city.
@@listen2iggy why they changed it? I can't say. People just liked it better that way.
Ma boi Rodney ! How to play Root next pls :)
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
This game looks interesting.
Anybody have "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" after watching this video? Just me?
What happens if I encounter my own family member at a tile which is not the police station?
Hey there, you won't find anything in the video about this, because nothing happens when that occurs - only encountering other player's family members causes something to happen. Don't worry about adding @ tags, I look for and respond to all comments. Hope that helps!
@@WatchItPlayed wonderful! Thanks a lot :)
@@ishansantra7367 My pleasure!
I just played the tutorial in the digital version, and after one game, really didn't fully grasp it all. I should've known to just watch your video before jumping into the digital tutorial.
Glad it helped!
Looks good but I only play solo. Still. There is an App.
The Windows logo in the game is unsettling.
Stickers ???
FLICK THAT>>>>
Heh, not everyone likes stickers, but thankfully there aren't too many!
