I gotta say, you're my favorite UA-camr right now. UA-cam is going through some rough times, but you're a beacon of hope for the humanity still left on the site.
Rodney’s first SmallWorld video was instrumental in helping get me into the hobby. Without that video I may have just given up. I had never played a designer game before so by lowering the barrier to entry he helped open the door to countless adventures with my friends and family. And in turn I’ve been able to spread the love of modern tabletop gaming to many others. So here we are almost 8 years later. Thanks Rodney! ❤️
I absolutely love your How To Play videos! They are perfect for almost any age and they truly have you ready to play after watching. Not only do you get to “hear” the rules but you get a visual snippet of game play. Thank you for your dedication and love of all board/card games! ♥️
Man, the first Watch it Played video I ever watched was Smallworld. And here we are again after increases in production quality. Now we just need a rematch series with Luke and Andrea.
I got this game a long time ago and me and my family couldn't figure out how to play. Now when we need to stay inside we started playing board games and after watching your video, you helped me and my family play this game. Thanks. 👍
Man, you are one of the main reasons, why I love to play board game, the way you explain to us every board game with passion and you do it in the most effective way, you never make a video that was so long that it will bore the viewers, but yet you almost never leave any important details. Great Work Rodney!
I'm about to start my first game of this on BGA and came right here to learn what I'm actually supposed to do. Thank you for a fantastic how to play video (as always)!
Despite an ever growing collection of games I'm so late to the Smallworld party! Just purchased it and here to learn. Hopefully easy enough for my 9yr old to pick up. Love your videos. Much love from the UK. 🇬🇧
I had downloaded this for iPad and got lost almost imediatlely. NOW I see what I was doing wrong. This looks like a lot of fun. I think my wife and I would really like this. It goes on the list. Very, very nice flip at the beginning, and the description was incredible as usual. You are thermonuclear, Rodney. I mean that in a good way of course. I hope you get some kayaking in soon. No more rain, and tides that cooperate!!
Just wanted to let you know that my wife and I really like your videos and they are extremely helpful. We are fairly new to the more complex board games. You make awesome videos!
Great video. Got to try and explain this all for the first time tomorrow to a mixed language gaming group. This was a big help. Much thanks from South Korea

Hi😃! Thank you so much for a great demo-video! However, there's one thing that confuses me and I hope you would be so kind as to clarify this one point for me! In this video you explain that when rolling a dice and you get nothing on it, you take back your pieces and put them ... "in any one region that you controle"!? ... However, in the video where you are playing with your son and daughter, your son comes in the same situation with two remaining pieces and zero on the dice, but puts his two remaining pieces into two different regions, one in each, like in a regular deployment!? And I wonder which is correct??! I would be very greatful for your answer! Lots of Greetings from Norway🇳🇴🤗😍🎉😃
The rules say "in one of the regions you control", but it's hard for me to comment on our play through video, because that was shot a long time ago, and I don't know if he had any special ability he might have been using, or if we might have slipped up during the game play.
Hi Rodney - Thanks for these videos they are so helpful! I did have one question . at 13:27 you mention that you can use the special ability of a race in decline and get the victory points. I read in the rulebook that a declined race doesnt get the banner ability unless stated otherwise. Does that mean if you see a picture on the declined side you get it but if theres nothing listed there you don't?
Right, I think you'll find if you start the clip a little further back, I'm saying the same thing: ua-cam.com/video/BMxt7OVj_lI/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=792 - you don't get its banner ability unless stated otherwise (for example, by the ability also being printed on its decline side). In the case of the Dwarves, they have an ability showing on the back, to remind you that their race ability stays active in decline. Hope that helps!
Hey Rodney quick question. In subsequent turns, do we have to conquer regions adjecent to those we own? Or can we conquer from the outside regions again. Additionally, are we allowed to conquer multiple outside regions during first conquest rather than adjacent?
Hey Arthdrew, you'll find that mentioned here: ua-cam.com/video/BMxt7OVj_lI/v-deo.html For your other question, you'll find that here: ua-cam.com/video/BMxt7OVj_lI/v-deo.html Hope that helps!
I still think amazons with diplomats and hobbits/halflings with heroes are the best. Wit hamazons you expand quickly and thanks to diplomats the other player can not attack you. Halflings simply rock - with 2 heroes tiles and their 2 homes tiles you gain 4 permanent scoring zones. I also like trolls ( absolute defence), skeletons and elves/mermen.
Do you get more race tokens each time it's your turn again? If you are playing skeletons there are 20 of them in total.. but your first turn you only put out lets say 6 of them. when it's your turn again can you put out another 6 or does that only happen on the first turn?
How good is it for only two players compared to 3 or four? Many games have a sweet spot. And I am looking for a similar game but that still has as much of the fun and strategy when only playing two players. (Without a dummy race... not a fan of the added shared thinking like in 7 wonders when playing 2 players)
Hey Daniel, I avoiding getting into personalized recommendations like that, as I can't say whether what I like would be the same as what someone else would like. I prefer to just teach the rules and show how it's played and then let the viewer see if it suits their particular tastes. Thanks for watching!
Hello just one question with Gouls. Once they are in decline, they still get to attack right? What if another race goes in decline, should the Ghouls be taken off the board?
If you concure a region with for instance 3 giants can you use two of those giants to concure another region or can a giant only attack one region in a turn
No the 3 giants you used to conquer that region would stay there until the end of your turn (where you could redeploy), but if you have other giants in your hand still, you can conquer with those.
Hey Nícolas, thanks for checking out the video. You'll find that addressed here: ua-cam.com/video/BMxt7OVj_lI/v-deo.html&t=669 The answer isn't really yes or no. It depends on what you do. Normally, you must always invade new locations adjacent to other locations you already control, UNLESS you take all your tokens back at the start of your turn. Check that video link and you'll see what I mean.
Hey John, the symbols on the tiles are symbolic representations of the figures abilities, which you'll find explained in the rule book reference at the back.
John Barrett I’m traveling right now, so I don’t have the game to check, but after pulling up the rule book and searching for images of the tile, I can discuss the Orc tile with you at least. The Orc ability is “Each not empty Region your Orcs conquered this turn is worth 1 bonus Victory coin, at the end of your turn.”. So the crosses out image of a combat symbol on the tile is to represent “conquering not empty tiles”. Then you see a +1 victory point symbol. So that’s a visual reminder that “each not empty tile you conquer gives you +1 point”. Hopefully from that you can sort out the rest of the tiles and their symbols, but ultimately, as long as you read the description for each race and abilities effect, then you will know how they work. The symbols are just there to help remind you of them when playing. Cheers!

I've done Pandemic, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride and other classics. Just something I'm open to doing. These games may be old to some of us, but they are brand new games for people outside our hobby.
It’s not likely that it will happen, and remember you can make change at any time (if you’re running out of 1s, then trade some in that you have for a higher denomination), but if you really do run out, just use a suitable replacement.
i am curious WHY you redid the same game without showcasing any of the different versions. ? like show how to play with realms or underground, pirates etc. underground would be exactly same mechanics just different races skills etc. would have made it nicer to watch
I was very happy to be able to work with the publisher to refresh the original. I'd like to think this is a bit of an improvement over first one was produced. If I could go back and reshoot some of the other earlier ones I'd jump at the chance, if I had the time :) Glad you would have had an interest in the expansions though!
I gotta say, you're my favorite UA-camr right now. UA-cam is going through some rough times, but you're a beacon of hope for the humanity still left on the site.

Oh I remember as well, I do miss lucky Luke's dice rolls, I guess he would be in his teens already!

There is improved production quality? What were the changes?
Jason Garcia Well for one, way back in the day, it all originally started in his basement, and needing sponserships from the local game store.
Gosh I watched the original Small world video years ago!! Bring Luke back and have a rematch. Would be great to see him again.
The closing box lid flip with the box top slowly sliding down was very satisfying to watch.
Here for you! :)
I'd love to see you do a box spin with Gloomhaven!! :D
Tnx for this video. Me and my girl purchased it as our first tabletop game, and we love it. Its relatively simple, but still with action and tactics.

BUT
-Are they kept face-down in "the pile"? As in, when you gain a victory coin/point are you drawing at random or is it really "Oh I gained 3 victory points/coins" so you just look for and take a "3 denomination" coin?
When you collect points, you gain the exact value in points you earned (not just random tokens from the supply - the supply is not kept face down). But once you have those points, you put them face down in front of yourself. Hope that helps.

It’s not likely that it will happen, and remember you can make change at any time (if you’re running out of 1s, then trade some in that you have for a higher denomination), but if you really do run out, just use a suitable replacement.
So, a player is conquering, moving and those things in one turn?
Yep!
You still answer questions?
Only one way to find out!
Déjà vu ... i could have sworn i have seen this video before ... maybe a bit less polished though
Rodney did a video for SW, like 8 years ago
Small World returns to Watch It Played!
Didn't Rodney play this with his kids?
Sure did! Back in 2011!
i am curious WHY you redid the same game without showcasing any of the different versions. ? like show how to play with realms or underground, pirates etc. underground would be exactly same mechanics just different races skills etc. would have made it nicer to watch
I was very happy to be able to work with the publisher to refresh the original. I'd like to think this is a bit of an improvement over first one was produced. If I could go back and reshoot some of the other earlier ones I'd jump at the chance, if I had the time :) Glad you would have had an interest in the expansions though!
