Great tips Richard. That first solo camp is always a nerve wracking experience. The tip about avoiding animal tracks is a good one. It’s easy to overlook that
This summer we were family camping and a loud scratching noise we thought it was a badger destroying our tent. Turned out it was a beetle under our mat. 😂😂 ATB. Grays
Wow what an achievement, well done. Agreed exhaustion helps. I think good ear plugs also I’m looking to find something for this better than the normal foam ones if you have any suggestions 👍
the scenery is so beautiful the video you shared is very good and interesting. Thank you for everything. Wishing you a happy new year and many good things
Isn't it funny that after all these thousands of years of evolution mankind is still afraid of the dark. You can spend all day outside but as soon as the sun goes down BAM we tremble in fear.BUT as you say DT you can face your fears, overcome them or at least contain them. You can watch a million UA-cam vids on wildcamping but the only way to to conquer you fear is to do it. Little steps at a time and you'll get there and you'll be snapping at the bit to do it again. In my 60s now and still get a camp in every month. I still get butterflies, still sleep less than four hrs a camp but l feel part of nature now not scared of it. Thanks for the video DT. P.S DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT WATCH HORROR MOVIES before you go on a camp.lol
Thanks Vince - it’s fear of what we don’t know or can’t see. You’re right it’s normal to get butterflies before we go out, but as soon as your out there it’s easier. Definitely no horror movies 👍😄
When I was a skinny little kid of about 12 or 13 years old, I was walking through the woods in the pitch dark without a flashlight with a good stick in one hand and a rock in the other. Suddenly it occurred to me that it was pitch dark, even in the unlikely event that someone was laying for me, they couldn't see anything either. As far as anyone might know, I could be a full grown man packed with muscles and packing a gun. Of course no one would be laying for me, I was the only one foolish enough to go through the thick woods at night without a light, but that thought was all I needed to bring comfort and confidence traveling through the woods at night. I wasn't afraid anymore. That was over 50 years ago.
I once camped on a dry part of a wide river bed in Scotland. When you're inside your imagination runs away, I was worried the water level would rise up. The early hours I heard very strange noises on the tent itself. Turned out, when I got up in day light, all ot was was snow building up on the tent, then sliding off. But your imagination wants to tell you different.
These are so.e great tips. Starting to vet into hiking. I don't feel comfortable with camping yet. I get spooked very easily. No garden here. Highrise balcony. I could try a sleeping bag in the night or look into camping out in a friend's yard. My other big fear is preditors. Here in canada we have bears, some larger cats, massive moose, wolves, coyotes etc. Where I live we have fox & Fisher cats that can make terrifying sounds. We do get the occasional black bear. Uncommon, but it only takes one. We do have a large public campground that is usually busy, and at most you might get skunks or raccoons looking for people food. You have to pay but I might try there first. At least there are washrooms, park staff. Wish we were in the UK where preditors aren't an issue.
Thanks yes totally different environment to here. There’s nothing really to worry about in UK. Best try campground first and make sure you stay safe but still enjoy the great outdoors
While camping once I had two aliens enter my tent and probe me for over an hour. Then they got dressed and left quickly. I couldn't sit down for a week.
Great advice Richard. I find just sitting and being in the environment makes me feel so much more settled and attuned to nature. This in turn calms any nerves I might have. Good vid and thank you. Ben
Yes i am afraid to go solo camping a grown man who has never done a stealth . I was considering having a go ,plenty of places where i live. And I was planning to do first one later on in the year when less people are about ,Too cold, Its daft being scared i know but walking through a woodland at night on my own fills me with a certain dread , Silly but its a hurdle that needs to be overcome. Look forward to your next camping video. Your advice will be taken .All the best Len
Hi Len, best to just try walking more in the dark and get familiar with your area. A good torch and trekking poles also help give you more confidence too 👍
I think when you start off get best value you can as you don’t know if you’ll like the hobby but as you get more experience you may have more confidence you will keep using it so will probably upgrade to better gear
You don’t want to watch horror films it just scares people from doing things (which are basically safe with a few precautions). It’s fun experimenting with the music like this 👍♥️😄🇬🇧
Such a brilliant video Richard, top marks. So informative. Being in nature is so good. People have asked me where can You camp in Leicestershire, I don't say where as its all private land but I say get out for a walk get a feel for places and you could actulay camp just about anywhere. Kind regards. 👍
Thanks Dave - I could n’t agree more. It’s the basic skills you need to scout out safe hidden places where no people are. It’s not hard but does take courage to go and do it 👍
Personally, I prefer to go on my own 99% of the time. Once in a blue moon with company I don't mind, but I do love the solitude and peace and quiet. Few weeks back, I heard something running toward my hammock. I undid the zip and whatever it was made a fast break through the undergrowth. Can only be a fox
Yes it is a risk although only once a dog approached me in camp and it was no problem. I do take hiking poles ready to use to defend myself if required 👍

Thanks Anthony - especially those Big foot 🦶 prints 😂👍

Haha the smallest thing in the depths of night sounds like a giant - especially when amplified through a camping mat 👍 Richard
I cycled John O’Groats to Land’s End in August with a hooped bivvy. Being tired helps with the fear of a stealth camp. Head down and put a podcast on.

Thanks Tim - The badger sounds like some wild campers in their hammocks 😂
Khu rừng cắm trại thật tuyệt vời 👍 ông chia sẻ cách cắm trại rất hay 👍 Thank you very much 💚
Thank you 👍
Thanks Richard, some good points. Interesting sound the badger makes. Never knew that.
It does sound like someone snoring Grant 👍

Thanks Ben - yes I think once your tent is set up and it goes dark best to just get in and pretend your at home 😂

Great advice, I live in Germany and everything here is prohibited and controlled. Thanks, for the sounds never heard a badger.
Thanks - here you just stay hidden and you’re fine
@@DayTripperAdventures Don’t get me wrong it’s totally possible I just have to get rid of the fear .

Thanks Drew it’s definitely a learning experience, but hopefully it gets easier when we get used to the noises 👍

Excellent tips there Richard 👌
Hi Lee - thanks, basic tips for an experienced outdoorsmen man like you, but may help someone somewhere. I look forward to meeting up sometime soon 👍
@@DayTripperAdventures Deffo up for a meet up Richard, we need to get a date in with Mr Tim 👍

Yeah I think the animals are much more scared of us which is handy 👍😄
great video
Thank you 👍
The thing that worries me the most is a tree falling on me. As far as anything else, i just carry a big knife.
Yes you have to try and spot the risky trees but sometimes they just fall
Wonderful advice, Day Tripper, thank you! I've never heard anyone give these good tips before! Good work!
Thanks Jeannette - it’s good to share what we learn on the way to hopefully help others 👍
My fear is dogs .been attacked as a child twice by alsatians the thought of dig walkers letting viscose dogs off not knowing you are there .
Yes it is a risk although only once a dog approached me in camp and it was no problem. I do take hiking poles ready to use to defend myself if required 👍
If you know your enemies name, then you have a power over it...
Agreed 👍
Badgers are my fear
Yes it’s definitely good to keep a look out for badger sets and avoid them
20 quid for a head torch? ur mad. 4 quid in sports direct less in wilkinsons ect smh
You’re right I think I must have got ripped off 👍
