  • Watch til the very end for the "Out Takes"! :)
First of a few camps that I plan on doing using very basic kit. In this video I camped in a British Army Goretex bivi bag in an ancient woodland.
Wild camping is not encouraged here so we elected to arrive at camp quite late (about an hour before sunset and leave quite early the next morning.
I had to cycle the 20 miles each way Bike packing all my kit.
The Bivi bag was more comfortable than I imagined but I did end up sharing it with quite a few slugs!
Music used is all from the UA-cam audio library:

@@WiltshireMan Funnily enough I bought a British Army bivy bag for 20 quid from Brookwood market back in 2000 whilst residing there. Was very excited and keen to test its waterproofing immediately. Once home I climbed inside it in the bath and turned the shower on. My wife of that time came in and said what on earth are you doing. To which I replied field testing the camping kit. She shook her head and left the bathroom looking very bemused.

Something to consider when buying army surplus goretex is it's lifespan ,
Some of these bags have been in storage since early 2000s
They might be less breathable or scuffed up early goretex suffered terribly from this weakness
I had two very expensive jackets that gave up waterproofness under 6 MTs always at elbow high movement area for fishing .
It's a punt whether one in a warehouse after being shipped around is still in good condition
This could easily apply to old new stock and anything in a store but more so to army surplus that might even have had a squadie climb into it with boots on and belt buckles etc scuffing up that membrane on inside .
£80 for a good condition army bag
Or £50-£100 for a new latest model one I guess if you like dpm a pattern phased out in 90s btw and think every army is the best then youl spend the same if not more on army surplus maybe surplus shops should get prices down to more reasonable amount reflecting current market prices but would they take a minus 50% hit on something dpm fans are willing to buy because it's army 🤷

I had a mod on my bpm bivi, had a center zip put in it for easier access. like most people I started out with the cheap army bivi then by inches got lighter and lighter ones, but, nothing seems to beat the army bivi for keeping condensation to a minimum.
so now settled on using that all the time.

They appear after dark (eleven ~ twelve PM or more if they detect human activity) in my property, even in my kitchen. From my point of view the simple bivi is the economical way to start wild camping, obviously they are weather dependant but I do not find the simple bivi in any way restrictive, if I want to sit up I just sit up! Small tents and hoop bivis are restrictive though.
As a cheap start up you just need
      A 2 season sleeping bag
      A used military bivi
      A small cookset
      And a sleep mat
Just keep an eye on the weather and you are away!

“Where’s my car” is fast becoming the Wiltshire Man theme Sandy. Great choice. Brilliant video as always.
Coming from the local area - I know where you were.
Added to that - I’m sat in The Bakers around the corner watching this.

Great film Sandy. I see that you are using your old bike and not the Bootzipper. Was that for any particular reason or you just fancied a change?

I'll be honest Neil, I think I prefer the smaller 26 inch wheels, they seem to roll just that bit easier than the heavier 29er wheels.

I'm not a fan of Bivies either. I've given-up on the Snugpack Stratosphere and bought an OEX Phoxx 1V2. Hopefully, I'll make it to the woods before too long to try it out. (Minus the slugs, if I'm lucky.)

Steve, Tony says he would love to do a camp in your woodland at some point. The Phoxx 1V2 is a better option than a bivi bag thats for sure:)

I never bivi camp on the moor after mid July, we start getting dew up there from then and the slugs can be a real pain. Not sure I've seen that many though in one go.

Just have to use a tent Si and keep the buggers out. There were so many slugs in this woodland.
On a side note some of the stones from Stonehenge came from this place
