EPIC!! Blu, I've been to Japan 16 times since May 1999. This SIM is SOLID!! Totally realistic. One might even get a job with JR EAST if you run the SIM perfectly. I too would welcome: different routes, times of day, and weather. But right now, this SIM is the best I've ever seen to intro people to one of the most advanced train systems: The Japan Rail. Domo domo arigatou gozaimasu (Thank you very much!!). :-)
I was surprised how the graphics are literally real life, but then I realized that the game is practically a video that you change the speed of it's amazing edit: o i just noticed the guy said that lol
WOW! Blu, you never cease to amaze! I love your pioneering spirit and possessing the will to jump into new stuff. I really enjoyed the ride, watching you learn on-the-go. I'd never heard of mixing actual film footage with computer-generated images. I loved this experience, I just wish I had been able to live it live with you.
All of this game uses actual recorded video and audio. Even the sound of the train motors are all real. The traffic lights, however, are embedded with computer graphics to enhance visibility. If you drive at the correct speed and diagram, the surrounding scenery and oncoming trains will move at the correct speed. An Early Access version has been sold, and the entire Chuo Line will be added in a free update in late April 2023.
This tech is very old. I have a train sim on PS2 that does the same thing. It's basically a video with a 2-d cab, so looking around won't be an option. What you are doing when driving a train is speeding up and slowing down the video. I've been to Japan many times so this game brings nostalgia to me.
Ya this reminds me of an early video driving simulator from back in the 1960s. I was about 10 years old and my dad was off due to an airline strike. That summer he got a job installing these simulators. It was basically a film that was projected onto a screen representing the car front window. You had a steering wheel, brake, gear shift and accelerator pedal. You had to stop, turn and go as instructed or you failed. It was a predetermined course so you just had to do what you were instructed to do and didn't really have a choice in where you went. At the time it seemed pretty cool as nobody had a "video game" back then. This looks like a high definition version of that.
I went to The Railway Museum just north of Tokyo in Saitama. They have the exact same simulator but the interface is a real train cab. My son loved the simulator.
Watching the video made me wonder when he'll notice the time, distance, power / brake level indicator on the top right, and the speed limit on the speedometer. Took 12+ minutes. And power 5 brake 5 burning the brake pad for a good 5 minutes before releasing the brake 🤣
Those games were the first simulators I've ever played. I'm half Japanese and my cousin gave me one of those when he visited us in Germany (decades ago^^). Of course it was a much older version but basics were the same. Real life footage with a "cockpit"-layover. That game pretty much got me into simulation games, but it was hard a.f.! Be late at a station and you were done for xD
The most outstanding part comparing with other video train sim is that there is a much better fps even the train just leaves or comes to stop at the station.
Blu, this sim looks Sick! The scenery is real footage, I guess. Save for the hud, this sim is off the charts. The sounds are real as well. The only drawback is that you cannot go outside the train like in TSW2 or TSW3, obviously VR would definitely help here. Even though we love pressing the "8" key in TSW2-3 to do the fly arounds, I prefer the realism (real footage) over that. The no hud view is awesome. Respawning to where you should have stopped at is also awesome. They need to do and English version of this!
Lovely! Thanks for sharing this review! You can appreciate the game more if you try Densha De go game series first. The latest being Densha de Go for the PS4/ 5 which has amazing graphics as well. Basically, it is a simulator and you need to drive the train much like how a real train driver would in Japan. (according to STEAM, this is actually one of the simulators the actual drivers use for training before driving the actual train!) There are time and speed limits to beware off, mainly time shown on the top right and you should aim for 'STA' (Station) to be '0', which means arrival at the station right on time. There are several speed limits along the route, and overspeeding is a big NONO due to safety concerns. When stopping at a station, you should aim for 'Distance' to be '0' which means stopping at the exact spot the train is meant to stop at. It's all about practice, practice practice, and adjusting the speed and brakes to get the '0' time and '0' distance for the 'perfect' score. I'm comtempting to buy this, but is the trial version any different from the actual one?
The reason why it is "laggy" or "has a low fps" is because the view that you see (the cab view) is actually recorded from a real train. they're using the footage they got from the real train for this game. and there is a real train driver driving the train and they are driving according to their training (know when to accelerate and brake) so when you approach the station at the slow speed, it's because the real train footage they got, the train wasn't moving as slow so they had to digitally slow the video down to match the speed you are driving in the game basically the real train driver is driving normally if you go at the correct speed the video will be played back at normal speed if you go faster than the real train did then the video is sped up if you go slower than the real train did then the video is slowed down (which explains the "low fps")
When I first saw this I thought wow the graphics are so real then the ppl moving look real, doh! They are real, I should think at first you will get to like it then after you have done the journeys a few times you will want more and get then bored. The technology is amazing what they have done, got to give then credit there.
