Anybody complaining about tuning or Popper can get bent. This show is amazing
hahaha! it fucking is!
RIP Neal Casal
I love this set.....who cares if it's not "perfect"and a bit "sloppy" as some commenters have said.........it's rock n roll, it's Americana, it's punk rock......Ryan is taking chances with the setlist with improved transitions keeping everyone on stage on their toes.........nice to see a clip up with Catherine Popper on bass....
Agree 💯 what an incredible, imaginative jamming’ rock festival set! Wow, they worked their asses off in spite of the heat, sweating & delivering like true professionals across the board. Gorgeous Neal harmonies & guitar work. Love Ryan with this band & the wacky egg police tuning banter 👍
Ryan's magic lays in that grey zone of humans interacting in a single take..
I saw 8 straight shows that summer, Bowery Ballroom 6/23 through Charlston, SC 7/29. What a band!
Lucky you John!
RIP Neil Casal! We love you.
I like when artists take some chances like Ryan Adams did here.
My favorite band ! Ryan and The Cardinals , badass !!! Neal Casal ,come on , amazing !!!!
This set is so rock and roll. I feel cool listening to rock and roll.
He must have picked up a lot of new fans that day! What an awesome, perfect performance! That's why people miss the Cardinals.
Well since Neal and Chris are dead, you’ll never see this version again.
@@marktruslow1376 You're replying to a comment I made six years ago. :)
They rocked the hell out of that show, opening with WHAT SIN REPLACES LOVE. Amazing
RIP Neal!
This version of I See Monsters is incredible. I love it so much.
I wish I knew about them while they were together. What a kick ass band. Thanx to niebuhrsongs for this post!
THAT SETLIST!!!!!
I was at this show with a good friend. First time seeing Ryan Adams, who I had been wanting to see. The show was great. It had a sloppy, yet tight feel, that I think lead to great Cardinals shows in the next year or two after this. And the Dead covers were fun.
nealbook I was there too. Saw and met him and the Cardinals in ATL about a week before. A friend was like ya wanna go to Chicago? So we drove up to Chicago overnight and stayed for Lollapalooza with a friend of ours.
1 person can't get over the grateful dead covers. I think they weren't a great band either but the Cardinals were Ryan's best and most cohesive musicians. thanks a million for this video
I was at this show right up front. Took some great photos that I gave to Ryan later in Portland. Good times…
What a cool band.
WOW! Ryan kills it on He’s Gone. They had the best band it the whole world💙
Catherine Poppers' bass is popping in this mix.
Love Niel, love that he uses an SG, love his tone, love that he uses 6v6 blackface Fenders...love his playing....RIP...your art lives on forever
NEAL was amazing. Such an integral foil to that peak Ryan Adams cardinals stuff. Absolutely heartbreaking that he passed away. Huge deadhead, too.
Ryan is a huge problem though. Hope he gets appropriate help.
The thing you have to understand about Ryan Adams is that both of his biological parents were extremely absent in his life growing up. His grandparents raised him. He likely has had to carry that wound on his back his whole life, a perennial chip on his shoulder. Yeah, it led to some incredibly detached and poignant music, but he has left a trail of destruction in his wake. When is he going to realize that whatever his ego has been doing for 50 years hasn’t been oh the whole positive and seek help? Maybe it’s impossible. Maybe he has some autism spectrum disorder. But he treats people like they are disposable and that he is entitled to special treatment. Love his music, but what an ass 🙃
@@DrKennyWang his bi-polar/mental issues feed his music though I'm pretty sure.
I'm so excited for Mach III
Damn - I was there.... and it was f$&king hot!!!!
Thanks so much for uploading this!! It's raw and out of tune, but still precious
Awesome! Thanks!
What a great tour this was! Thanks for posting. I was at the previous 3 shows before this: Nashville 8/1, St Louis 8/2, Indy 8/3.
Thanks Neirbursongs this is another view of a show that I have watched so many times. It. is wonderful.
Nice Sonic Youth cover tossed in
Parry Wolfe Was that expressway to your skull?
and some EPIC jams of some strange stuffs
That segue into wharf.... ooohhhhh
I love you Cat Popper!
Catherine Popper!
This rules.
gnarly
The drummer looking for his sunglasses after rocking the f out!
the MOST" shoot me in the face " intro of ALL TIME.....yupz
should have invited them to my wedding.....damncrap
How do I get my guitar to sound like that?
Hand it over to Neal Casal?
Fender Princeton reverbs, guitar with humbuckers (notably Gibson’s), a good overdrive/boost pedal, and the amps built in reverb. Hope this helps
also playing outside in high heat and high humidity-
playing outdoors in July-August in Chicago ----(or other mid-country cities like St. Louis, Memphis) can really affect guitar's tuning)
What a weird setlist.
btw.....i watched this live.....like comp live......hahahaha....Kiera Knightly What the Fuck?!!!!!
Sorry to play devil's advocate here but does anyone else find their performance a little sloppy in parts? I mean I saw Ryan Adams and his band last November in Japan and they were incredibly tight and sounded amazing. This concert sounds amateurish in comparison. What a great songwriter he is though......such fantastic songs
Matthew McLaughlin totally agree ! It's the bass player and out of tune guitars
not a real Ryan fan...
Why do you get to be hypercritical ?
YOU DONT
It must have been a really hot day. The guitars sound horribly out of tune, except for Graboff, who sounds great.
I was there, it was very hot.
Scott McArthur it was hot as shit! My face was bright red from the day before. Still glad I got to see this show. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
do you play guitar? please explain to me where it sounds out of tune. Don't think you know what you're talking about
It was the shite in yer ears
Good lord tune those guitars!!!!
Tune these nuts 🥜
His rant on eggs was him shamelessly trying to be Mitch Hedberg...don't quit your day job, Ryan.
Who is m hed burg
Bass player is not part of this band, just not feeling it. Guitars won't stay tuned. I say that cause I just watched Ryan and the band in 2017 absolutely destroy the Apollo
Catherine Popper was a founding member of Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. Have since left and of course Ryan is no longer with the Cardinals altogether.
niebuhrsongs I don't know who any of these people are, it's just this performance is not very good and that bassist is a big reason. Its not the greatest representation of a brilliant songwriter or his bands.
Your input is valid, I just thought you meant she wasn't his bass player, but I guess you mean she's not gelling with the band in this performance.
She's quite legendary in Ryan Adams lore as a founder of his legendary Cardinals.
I'm glad you enjoyed the 2017 show!
The full Apollo performance is available. Also I've put together a page of the show (videos, photos, setlist, etc) comepickmeup.org/?page_id=6&show_id=1212
The out of tune guitars really do kill it. They figured it out a few songs in though. Catherine Popper is a great bassist though. She played bass on both Jacksonville City Nights and Cold Roses and plays bass on most of the III/IV tracks. Check out Ryan's performance with The Cardinals on Austin City Limits from 05'. Great performance there.
Sun, heat and humidity play hell on a guitar's tuning. It's hard to keep even the best guitars in tune under those conditions.
Monsters is terrible tho
Never ever liked this guy. And here is just another hour-plus worth of reasons why... so boring
