The Eagles needed Joe a lot more than Joe needed them that is for sure.
Indeed!!
Why even make the statement? Why do so many people have a need to plot musicians against each other?
51 years ago. still sounds awesome. joe is such a great songwriter.
Yes it still sounds great!
This is Joe Walsh/Barnstorm line-up playing "Tend My Garden" from the second "James Gang" album Rides Again. I was fortunate to see this line-up with the Barnstorm line-up it was a great concert, It must have been the same time period as this video (same tour?) because I remember the Nieuport 17 airplane hanging above the stage. I've been a fan of Joe and his music since '69.
Wow 54 years...time flies don't it.
I saw JW and Barnstorm in Houston in '73. REO Speedwagon opened, Barnstorm, Focus.. Barnstorm blew them all away! Still memorable!
Saw barnstorm open for guess who at blossom music center in Ohio. Amazing night.
Scholz has stated in multiple interviews his fondness for the James Gang, and in particular that band's 1970s album, James Gang Rides Again. Accordingly, the signature riff for "More than a Feeling" bears a resemblance to that composed by Joe Walsh for the "Rides Again" track "Tend My Garden." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_Than_a_Feeling
Pastoral bombast
Greatness begat greatness!
Funny…I IMMEDIATELY thought, “Geez, this sounds like Boston.”
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Boston sounded like Joe Walsh @@mc2mc277
Joe's giving it all on the drums. The Barnstorm lineup was best.
Agreed
Vitale is the best.
Loved his style.
He looked like actor Richard Benjamin to me.
Love Joe Vitale. He gives such a distinctive drum sound to Joe Walsh's music.
Joe Walsh for President 🎸
And when he gets to DC, he'll change the name of the capital to _Walshington!_
Time warp. I can remember Joe for Prez was a thing back in the day.
I already voted for pat Paulson
The super superior 70's, never to be replicated or reproduced.
I could not agree more ! In fact I think that music will rise again or at least something similar. There was just too much great music being made in the 70s . The music that is being produced these days ( and I use the word produced vary lightly) is crap...or at least most of it is just crap. It may happen after I am long gone, but I predict it will happen......I hope i am still around to see it happen.I happened to catch a TV special just this morning...It was a " Kid Rock" Country TV special. OMG I can not even express what crap it was - I watched it about 3 min and turned it off.
Kid Rock sucks. He's an absolutely horrible "singer", the material he puts out is beyond shitty, and anyone who rips off and fucks up a Warren Zevon song the way he did can kiss my ass. @tefenstrat
This was an era filled with such immense & incredible talent that Joe Walsh was viewed as a “B” level guy by the listening public. We players knew better, though. We knew he was special.
And this era of his life, just peak creativity. To me Walsh was pure genius, he was a visionary, and I’m glad to be able to say (as an old guy now) I was blessed to have seen it first hand and appreciate it…
I would dare to say that James Gang/Joe Walsh was Americas answer to Cream/Clapton.
Amen.👍🏼
My Grandpa used to exchange Morse code with Joe. Grandpa was a pioneer in Ham radio and Morse code in Canada. In the late 1970s, I asked if he ever communicated with any famous people. He mentioned he knew an "entertainer in Los Angeles." Without missing a beat I asked "Would his name be Joe?" Grandpa's face light up and replied "Yeah, Joe, that's him." My jaw hit the floor and I blurted out "Grandpa! That's Joe Walsh of the f#@&?*g Eagles! They are the biggest band in the world right now!" Grandpa didn't have a clue. He just replied "I don't know about his music but Joe's a nice guy and pretty good at Morse code too. The last good pop music I heard was Benny Goodman." FWIW, this was just after Hotel California FWIW. Joe is one of a kind.
I was never a player, but I NEVER considered Joe Walsh " B level".
@ I hear you, was only referring to the general public’s view of him. He made some classic albums, but I don’t feel that he got the love & respect he deserved.
I literally wore out my first purchase of his excellent album “So What,” man, I love that album, and so many others…
Joe Walsh is revered, and rightly so! In a period when guitarists didn't all sound the same...he is so distinctive and original! Had the privilege to see him a couple of times in the 80s....He leaves every bit on the stage! I can wish for it, but there may never be another one like him!
Forever grateful to the entertainment committee who brought James Gang to Ohio's Defiance College in April 1971, my sophomore year. The only time Joe put down his guitar was to sing and play this song on the Hammond B3 organ. We were also some of the first fans in the country to see him perform "Walk Away" from the just-released album, "Thirds."
Joe Walsh displaying how multi talented he is. As a solo artist and with the Eagles
Joe Walsh has always been uber cool!
Joe makes the best guitar faces in the business.
We need to see Joe perform with Este Haim and her bass face.
Yes, so does Robin Trower 🎸❤️
It's called guitar-stink-face. Check out Pat Metheny's stink-face.
Looks and sounds like it was recorded last night. Love this channel.
Old becomes new again on this channel.
Joe Fuckin’ Walsh!
I requested this and I can't believe you guys posted!! Thank you so much. This is an amazing version of this old James Gang song.
Love the candleabra. Gives it a bit of a Liberace touch to it.
I saw this lineup of Barnstorm in 1972 and 1973 in Nashville. Musically they rank among the best concerts I have ever seen. Those two Barnstorm albums (for me) eclipse anything he ever did with The Eagles.
That’s the truth 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Brilliant records. Great stuff. Grew up on Joe Walsh.
War Memorial Auditorium, Nashville Tn
@@randysmith7231 You are correct sir! A great venue. Sad they don't use it much anymore.
My favorite song from Joe’s James Gang Days! Just wish he didn’t drop the second verse… What a find!! ♥️🎶
****GREAT SONG**** ****What an excellent version**** ✌✌👍👍👊👊
A good live version, but the studio track on "James Gang Rides Again" is the best. Nice array of percussion including timpani and tam tam.
IMHO the James Gang’s version from the Columbus Vets Aid 2022 show makes this one sound as if here Joe’s on Dramamine. Joe’s little solo notwithstanding, the JG version is just incredibly good!
I’ve grown to like Vitale well enough over the decades - in spite of his heavy handed bombast as a player he seems like a nice enough guy - but Jim Fox’s on the original and then again in ‘22 had…SOUL! I have the original streaming broadcast feed but there’s probably a decent iphone video online somewhere.
Great song and I was unfamiliar with it. Thanks for another gem, Midnight Special.
from the "James Gang Rides Again" album
Great performance by Joe and the band -- especially by Joe Vitale on drums. I loved these live performances on The Midnight Special back in the day. I was just a high school kid loving the music of the 1970s.
Saw him performing this tune with The James Gang in 1971 or 72 in Miami without the piano, candelabra, nor theatrics. They were great! Chuck Berry opened the show and later came back on to play with the JG!
Vitale is underrated. Killer drummer and a huge part of Joe Walsh’s sound.
You can hear where Tom Sholtz got his idea in that guitar riff Joe’s playing. (More than a Feeling)
As a Mari Ann, I approve this message 🥰
@@KittyGrizGrizWalk Away is another great song JoeWalsh wrote. 🙂
@@ZoetropeificationI’ll check it out, thank you!
Title reminded me of Walk Away Renee by the Left Banke (for some crazy reason).
@KittyGrizGriz Your mention of Mari Ann reminded me of the More Than a Feeling lyrics. "Til I see Marianne walk away. I see my Marianne walking away."
Which reminded me of Joe's song. 🙂
@@ZoetropeificationWas a young teen when Boston, made the song famous. In a High School with over 2,500’ish students and the only girl with that “old fashioned” name, it made me feel special, like they were singing about-for me. Always disliked my name growing up (named after grandmothers-aunt), but grew to like it. Probably being teased relentlessly by boys asking “How’s Gilligan??” didn’t help matters. One day I’d had enough and said “I killed him and buried him in the lagoon!!” 😜 🤣
Saw Joe in November with The Eagles. Still great. Love the use of the kettle drum here. I was unfamiliar with this JG tune. Thanks for posting.
Saw them both at the Eagles Hotel Kali tour...
Joe is one of the greatest.
Joe is in my top three of guitarist along with Roy Buchanan and the legend Duane Allman.
I love Duane Allman too, especially his song “Little Martha”, have you been to the “Big House” in Macon, GA? If you haven’t it’s fantastic, and haunted, I had a “coming to Gregg” moment while visiting. Want to go back as I didn’t get to see everything and visit Rose Hill Cemetery, where the band is buried, wrote songs and just hung out together. It’s on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Nawww never been to Macon. Been to Atl a bunch of times. Might need to put it on my bucket list and make that happen.
Take protection if you go to Macon, especially downtown and near the cemetery!!! @@curtisphilumalee1447
@@BML1967I felt perfectly fine there, 🤦♀️
Such a treasure to see this in such beautiful clarity! What a band. Kenny Passarelli is still a badass!
Amazing version. Better live than the album version
My first 8track!! Got to see him with KISS & Rush in 75😊
a real GEM!
LOVE Joe Walsh 🥰 and his black-glittery outfit, a favorite guitarist of mine and band, The James Gang.
This is such a pretty song, they sound wonderful here, the drums omgoodness.
Yes Joe, I’d like to come home with you… ❤❤❤
Excellent!!
Happy Sunday 🕊 Thank you for sharing!
Joe Walsh rock guitar legend, great clip!
The ambition of the arrangement here is outstanding, particularly Joe Vitale's work on the percussive instruments. The three albums he did with this line up, I feel are amongst the best of his long career. Can anyone tell me who the guy on the piano was?
Just guessing here, but I believe that's Rocke Grace.
@@grant50 No, Rocke is on the organ, behind the piano player and almost completely out of view.
@@CoCotheTurtle Rocke Grace, piano, Tommt Stephenson, organ in the background.
What an incredible song. Cannot express how much I love Joe Walsh's music.
Love all there Playing , Also Rocke Grace on Piano, Later all five came along as on the Road Barnstorm.
Thnx for this download,,Saw Barnstorm in '06 for my 50th,,,, also saw Joe Solo,, did not dissapoint
Great joe walsh..🎸
I found another great live version! !
I'm very happy🤩
Love this!!!
Great James Gang tune!
"How ya dew-wing!"
70s music followed the great 60s and then the 80s had everything
nah...the 80s was the beginning of the end of great music.
I saw Joe in Asbury park new jersey back in the mid 70s . maybe 1975 or so . we drove from jersey city to Asbury NJ which was like leaving the counrty. Had a great time . do remember how we got home.good time back then . thanks Joe .
This line up was 🔥 so much talent!
Nothing beats the original James Gang lineup. This is outstanding, but Fox and Peter’s are so underrated.
James Gang Rides Again senior in high school we listen to it everyday every night morning to
The timpani part is the best bit out of the whole performance.
This entire entire concert needs to be officially released on DVD Blu-ray
It just doesn't get any better than that!
Amazing version!!!!
Sounds just the album ! Joe Walsh great !
Great video😊
His grainy, plaintive voice is as much a part of Joe's genius as his peerless playing
RARE song on video..nice.
Always really liked this track on the James Gang - Live In Concert album.
Domingo com o que há de melhor ! Obrigado pela postagem .
Id love to see entire performance from show
There are other shows sitting on great footage too.
Thanks for posting
👍👍
Who's listening in 2024
Right here! Still have their albums with this great song
me
Me

??
Gonna have to dig that album out!🤔
Wow! Thank you!
I love that suit -
Joe is looking like the usual rock star while the piano player is dressed for Saturday Night Fever.
Piano player is Rocke Grace (RIP), an old high school classmate of mine. Great guy.
WoW!
Fucking awesome!
R.I.P. Rocke Grace
Imagine telling everyone you are going to be on TV, and everyone is watching, even your mom! And they don't even show you! Poor Rocke!
Another great video from the world's best archive of live '70s performances.
Side note: is Kenny playing a fretless bass?
I think so
I got a " B.B. King La Midnight " album . It has B.B , Joe Walsh and Jesse Ed Davis on guitar . How about that line up .
Bang that gong!
Haha, every time I read this it makes me think of the “Gong Show”
Well written songs Joey was an integral part of Badfinger
Love love love BARNSTORM
😱😱😱😱✨️✨️✨️✨️👌👌
I always forgot what time this was on.
Gibson Les Paul Standard - Iced Tea 😍. Ouçam o som dessa guitarra. Tks, Joe Walsh.
There are elements in this version that remind me of Who Quadrophenia
Walsh should have never joined The Eagles. His talent truly shines as a solo artist and with The James Gang.
If you love this one, check out these other Joe Walsh jewels. The James Gang - Funk #49
The James Gang - Walk Away
Joe.Walsh - A Life Of Illusion
Joe Walsh - Tend My Garden
♥️Loved Joe Walsh In The Rock Band The Eagles♥️ Joe Walsh Did An Extraordinary Guitar Performance In The Hit Song Of The Eagles 🎶HOTEL CALIFORNIA🎶
boring , Love Joes tend my garden , country fair , rocky mountain way , So what , the smoker et al
😎
Would a never listen to the Eagles don't like them but I like Joe Walsh I would listen to him just because of Joe Walsh
BIG TIME 🤍
Why would you give up this to become an employee under the jackboot of Glenn Frey and Don Henley....
Used to be friends with Joe’s 1980s guitar tech (now deceased) between his stories & what I read in an ancient interview he hated the musician micro-management side of the business- meaning having to chew another musician’s a** out for showing up late, stoned, etc. and was looking for someone to take that off his shoulders so he could create. (Bill S was covering the $$ side of management at this point.) Grateful AF that Frey & Felder drove him to recovery that fine day, because now Joe’s playing again at the same level as 1969. #Gratitude
I can undersrand why some people don't like tourists...
Does anybody know who the keyboardist was?
Tom Stephenson and Rocke Grace whom isn't actually shown.
Should be The James Gang.
It was originally, this is Barnstorm though, still a terrific version.
Drummer guy....no I have no frustrations when I leave... I tell my wife, I love my job.
I saw Joe during one of the last COMDEX shows (2000?) at The Beach nightclub in Vegas. I think the group was thrown together from locals, and the volume level was unbearable, but I enjoyed the ten-or-so songs I heard (which included “Tend My Garden,” always my favorite) before my ears gave out.
Rocke Grace and Tommy Stephenson on keys
who were the keyboard players?
Tom Stephenson and Rocke Grace whom isn't actually shown.
Ha yes, the airplane video. How many songs are posted from this?
Who’s on Hammond Organ?
More gong
Is that the Les Paul that ended up w Jimmy Page?
Not likely, Page bought Number 1 in '69 when Joe was still in the James Gang, this is '73.
I wondered the same thing.
Watching this I wonder why the James Gang didn't just add a keyboardist if Joe was overburdened
A fretless P Bass?
Joe left the James gang because of his Beatles influences: he wanted to make more orchestrated music
