I told you the video game industry is failing and I'm glad because these people cannot make adequate new games to save their lives. How is the ps5 entering the latter part of it's life cycle when it's only been out for 3 years and 3 months? The xbox one and ps4 were out for 7 years! I dunno who the heck is running Sony and Xbox but they are running it into the ground and the only new console I am ever getting again is the new Nintendo. I'm done with Sony and MS. I hope nobody buys a ps6. We are all broke right now! I'm not buying it. It's not an interesting time to be a gamer it's a sad time to be one.

The gaming industry could be getting worse but this is my opinion but maybe its getting worse cause of people downloaded emulated PS5 and Xbox games on PC but im not saying its the case but its very odd how digital games is being forced from Xbox and PS5 cause its convenient but Nintendo is still doing both physical and digital games without a subscription to rent there games at least.

The problem is that these consoles weren’t even readily available for 2 years and there have barely been any games for them. Even if the customary amount of time has passed I don’t think this console generation needs to end.
Exactly, this generation feels like it only just began because consoles were so hard to get for so long. I feel like we haven't even seen a game come out that takes full advantage of what these consoles are even capable of. It doesn't help that most of the big titles that have come out were so focused on live service and scraping players wallets that they didn't even bother to make a game worth playing, or even a game that could be played at all in some cases.
What? there’s been a ton of PS5 games this gen. More than any other console currently. This month alone we got PERSONA 3, LIKE A DRAGON INFINITE WEALTH & HELLDIVERS 2 (all with killer reviews) And more coming soon Like FF7 REBIRTH, DEATH STRANDING 2, RISE OF RONIN, STELLAR BLADE, that’s just off the top of my head.

With confirming a 2026-2028 release date for the PS6, they’re showing that the PS5 is having the same average lifespan of basically every successful console in history. When you get under 5 years like the WiiU and the Saturn, that’s when a company is trying to move past a failure.
The real problem with 9th gen gaming is that we don’t even own our games anymore whether the copy is physical or digital as we’re just buying a license to rent it until it’s either removed from the store or servers shutdown.
Certain games like the Dead Space remake had the full game on the launch copy of the game, but it's pretty rare now. Maybe other games from last generation did too, but had to be installed, so it's hard to say how many of them could even do the full installation via disc. GOG/everything up to the PS3/360 era for emulation for sure could have full game installations for playing locally. PC is a good way to play now knowing the business models for current-gen consoles. At least we can play copies ripped from physically owned hardware (or even our phones if the console is old enough).
I can't wait until a few years from now when PS4/Xbox One games (that had the games on the discs) can be copied over into peoples' libraries, so servers would be less of an issue.
GOG may have a few PS4-era games, not sure about current-gen ones yet.
People need to stop spreading this misinformation about current disc games. I can guarantee that as long as it's a single player game that doesn't require an always online connection, you do in fact get a full game on the disc. While some might be glitchy messes (looking at you cyberpunk), they are in fact fully playable games from start to finish 99% of the time. We're not yet at a point where that can get "revoked".

Elden Ring is a souls type of game, with tight hit-boxes, i-frames and a need of low latency. FromSoft failed to deliver in this department. In spite of this, Elden Ring still (corruptly) got 10’s across the board. The console versions are just not as bad as PC, but Digital foundry proved Elden Ring was severely lacking on the performance side at launch.
Why did Elden Ring get a pass at launch when its frame rate was all over the place on top of other issues at launch? Why the lack of uproar?

raising the price of the ps5 by about 100 euros around christmas isnt gonne help either. Its down again but still more expensive then the old ps5 was about 18 months ago.
In Oz, the PS5 costs the same now as it did at launch (AU$799 according to EB Games), which is actually UP $100 fro 12 months ago. Between Covid scarcity and post-covid chip shortage, the PS5 hasn't been available for long and so it's a 3 year old system selling at new console prices while treating its predecessor as a dying console and releasing almost no games for it in the last 12 months.
3 weeks later and we're back to the old format, honestly that's kind of a record.

Nintendo have almost always been the cheaper of the console options, but they without a doubt have not only the most exclusive IPs, they have the most famous ones that have been around the longest.

The SSD for games like Demon’s Souls and 60fps is a game changer. Ran through my PS4 backlog with most games at 60fps makes me never wanting to go back to 30.
The graphical and visual upgrades were merely just bonuses.

That's why my last console was a PS3. I switched to PC gaming because I needed a new PC for college work and could not also afford a PS4. But after wards I found PC gaming better suited to my grown up life priorities.

Hard to believe we are almost 4 years into the ps5. I feel like I just got it on launch day like a year ago.
Where to start:
1. Final Fantasy 7 Remake part 2 is also a PS5 "exclusive".. if it becomes formatted for PS4 eventually, who knows? Not holding my breath
2. PS5 is "failing" due to inflation, people cant afford the consoles and the games have become more expensive, and lets not forget the chip scandal wich made the PS5 lag in production for years.
3. Console gaming will PROBABLY die out at some point with all these new technologies coming out, like VR and augmented reality, lets not forget the microchips you can implant in your brains, at some point that's all we're gonna need... you will never have to live in reality ever again.

Sony has been using the same mechanics for every game. They used to feel epic but now it's just played out. I have about as much excitement for a new Sony game as a new Ubisoft one. (Sneak around, Listen to your character talk constantly, a cut scene plays, squeeze through a crack in the wall, craft some dumb crap, oh joy another stealth section)

This should be the halfway point for a console generation, the fact that they're already talking about giving up on the 9th gen consoles so soon doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in people to go out and buy the next generation of consoles, especially since most people only get their consoles within the last 2 years because of the parts shortage. If the 10th generation of consoles comes out within the next 3 years I can guarantee sales will be even worse, who's gonna wanna go out and spend $700 on a new console when the one they just bought had nothing going for it and then was abandoned halfway through its normal lifecycle? I've never been a PC gamer but now is looking like the right time to buy a gaming PC.
This is why I bought a 7940hs mini PC.

Consoles are cheaper than a good pc which plays current games(high or medium settings enough) so it wont end for awhile
These shenanigans could have been completely stymied with a release of Bloodborne in 60fps, or Bloodborne 2, or Bloodborne on PC. Sony shot their own toes off at least four times in the last 5 years.
Bloodborne is such an overrated game. I beat the game 4 times just to get the platinum some 4 years back and have no desire to ever go back. The story however, was great, ngl.
Overall, I don’t understand the appeal of these Souls type games.
I beat them and I am done with them, never to be touched again. Haven’t touched Elden Ring since early 2022 when I beat the game.

For all we know, the PS5 could be their last console & the only way we could play games (including their exclusives) on it would be put behind a paywall subscription (such as PlayStation Plus). I hope I’m wrong but they could easily do it if they wanted to via software update.
i agree i have PS5 and series X and i dont play them any more since i bought the steam deck and some other handhelds i told my friends that i retire when it comes to consoles im now spoiled home and traveling abroad times are changing ..............
What I read from Sony did not say that they were giving up; the PS5 is one of the best-selling consoles in the industry. The title does not make sense to me; what they have referred to is the natural cycle of that type of product.
It call clikbait I seen it announced and they did not say going to xbox, giving up on console etc.. but a person doing live commenting on it, say watch ppl now spin this. He was right!
Sony does sell alot of consoles sure they have cut forecast tho, provably due to not having any 1st party games due out this year.
However, they could be in a simllilar position to sega with the saturn when ironically, in the end, sega was better off not selling their flagship console because it cost too much to manufacture.
Its an impossible position to be in but that actually happened with sega.
Making money back on software is part of the business plan as consoles are sold at a loss, but if you have no games to sell but ppl still buy your hardware, your losing money hand over fist.
Its no secret sony as a global entity is down 30% on profits. Somethin has to be put in to effect to stem the losses.
And it looks like sonys new guy in charge is already thinkin about it accordin to his statement, i believe his previous position was in finances and accounting so makes sense.

If 54.8 million consoles sold seems like a little, I don't know what it means much. Just by looking at the financial statement published today, we could realize that Sony is not the one that is taking the path of Sega; that is absurd.
The title is to draw attention; Sony's statement does not talk about the end of the console. Just by looking at the Q3 has surpassed Q2 in revenue.

Sony should double down on physical ownership to differentiate consoles from PCs, while using their clout in the industry to launch aggressive data preservation ads much akin to 2013's "Sharing the Game" instructional video. Developers who still chose to resist traditional methods of purchase would be demonized due to the platform's popularity and relentless television spots - thereby loosing considerable profits. Instead, the company will likely choose greed; which forces many like myself to eschew modern gaming in favor of emulation, board games, or the utilization of existing libraries. Hopefully we'll experience another crash sooner rather than later though, as corporations would learn from their mistakes more quickly. I'd rather get all this nonsense out of the way.
This is normal for a console generation. The new console will probably be released in 2027 or 2028 and the PS6 was probably in the planning stages back in 2021. The PS5 was in the planning stages back in 2014.
Sales matters and you need first party exclusives to keep the console running years down the road

Add the fact that games almost cost as much as the console itself (heading that way crazy high game prices - note I don’t mean this line literally).

I don't think we're close to the latter half of the PS5 generation. Not yet anyways. Here's why.
This year we have Helldivers 2 that just came out, Pacific Drive and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth near the end of the month, Rise of the Ronin coming in March, Stellar Blade coming in April, Silent Hill 2 Remake coming sometime this year, Death Stranding 2 coming in 2025. We also had Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy 16 last year, Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok in 2022, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, FFVII Remake Intergrade, and Demon's Souls in 2021, and we had Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 2020.
Im sure there are still a lot of games still coming down the pipeline as Naughty Dog is working on a new IP and is already in the planning stages of TLOU Part III, Insomniac is currently working on the Wolverine game (as well as possible DLC for Spider-Man 2), and Sucker Punch is working on Ghost of Tsushima 2 (the worst kept secret). So I dont think the PS5 generation is over quite yet.

Imo most AAA games are a waste of resources. If indie games can generally be as fun or more fun, but be developed with like 10% of the budget, what's the point?
Like, obviously it's difficult to replicate something like Cyberpunk on an Indie budget, but most AAA games aren't cyberpunk, and the enormously bloated production costs force companies to add bullshit microtransactions and DLC just to recoup costs. I'd rather have more, simpler games that don't try to nickel and dime me to death than than the current slate of AAA games any day.

Because it trades strips away the uniqueness and character that video games and their associated hardware have had since the beginning. There is something special about booting up a game console to play a game, and being greeted with a unique startup sequence instead of a PC desktop, and clicking on an application or the like...

if i wanted portable, i'd just play games on my mobile phone. no, i want to see my aaa games in all their wide screen glory, 4k graphics at 60+ framerate. companies thinking these handheld devices are the future of gaming is sad.
The global Shutdown-emic of 2020-2022 destroyed tech parts manufacturing & coding for new games, which is the major reason why the PiS5 & Xbox are hurting so badly. That, and due to shortened sales & manufacturing a _lot_ of new games _are still being made for past-gen systems._ Nintendo avoided this by releasing well before the shutdown-emic and using tech that was less expensive and easier/cheaper to stock.

I sold all of my consoles except the Lenevo Legion Go, Steam Deck Oled and the Switch Oled....im using a 9TB setup on the Legion Go and it pretty much plays everything i throw at it...plenty for my use anyway
I think a few things are contributing to this. Just a few of my theories.
1. Games are too expensive to make compared to the past and take longer to make which makes them a more risky financial investment. The interim Sony Playstation CEO said he wanted to address both of these issues. This would help reduce the risk of games flopping and being a financial flop.
2. Once PS4 and X1 went x86 basically became pcs in a box and hardware got to the point of no profit margins to be made with 9th gen probably made Microsoft and Sony question why just sell a piece of hardware as a loss leader when its the software that makes money. Microsoft figured out with the failed Windows phone they needed to put their software on non microsoft devices such as ios and android to be successful.
3. After seeing the succusses of the Switch and that Nintendo makes money on every Switch sold and the success of the Steam deck; Sony and Microsoft want a piece of that mobile action which is why there are rumors they each are making a dedicated handheld.
this console generation is so incredibly lack luster and weak compared to previous gens, i know so many people who bought a PS5 just to use it as an expensive paper weight with liquid metal inside.

I think one reason, out of many reasons, that their sales are down is that physical games at the stores also work as advertising to people who do not investigate what games the consoles have available to them. You used to be able to go to the stores and see a wall of games for each console that consumers keep seeing each visit, and they would want particular consoles to play games they keep seeing these as ads for, along with kiosk demos that advertise to people. That kind of thing makes a lot of people want the games, and therefore want the consoles required to play those games.
Nintendo's switch is doing that more than the others.
I second that, I haven't seen any demo kiosks for the PS5 or Xbox Series systems, but I've always seen kiosks for the Switch. A Best Buy not too far from my house has a neat setup, showcasing the console docked, along with the undocked stock Switch, OLED and the Lite in different positions.
Sony aint got a clue other than keep on rinsing the players as-long as they can.

I like having a console and my physical games that I can touch and play anytime without worrying about a service being shut down or content being removed. I don't care how advanced these portable PCS get, if I can "own OWN" my games I don't want it. I'll stick to Old consoles and keep collecting games for them. I will never conform to an all digital future that we're heading to.
I'd never go digital on a console because Half of those games are gonna be bricked once the console's online services die in ~10-15 years. On PC I'm pretty comfortable with it though, steam doesn't seem to be going anywhere and is far less prone to anti-consumer bs than console companies.

Any new major existing franchises....that means there could be non triple A titles released. It's slowed down becuz ppl can't afford it now, maybe they'll drop the price.
You're right and you're wrong. Here's the thing.
These companies aren't giving up on hardware because they see digital release and gaming as a service in the horizon, they're doing it because they're trying to FORCE the future of gaming to be a service. This would put them in a position where they can be as mediocre as they want and still get millions upon millions of dollars. The only way to combat it is to just not buy into it. Buy physical, buy physical, buy physical.
Now, when it comes to Xbox and Playstation, as someone who not only collects but also has a gaming store and follows hardware and software trends, both of these companies have not been very different for well over a decade. Their machines always had far more of the same games than not. So what's the point? Their consoles basically just got improved graphics with each new one. No true innovation.
And while Nintendo has its own shortcomings they have always put game play and the 'fun factor' first. They haven't set out to try and have their machines be 15 different things like the PS3 XB360 XBO, PS4, PS5 have.
In my opinion, innovating in game play is more important than more graphics and bigger games that take hours to install and update.
Buy physical.
Maybe the reason why so they can convince us on hating on their consoles so we can say consoles sucks so we all go more digital. They definitely have something shady planned for the future like more paywalls and micro transactions.
Consoles will never go away. World wide theres 100 million people or more that want to plop down and play on their console. It makes less than zero sense to ignore that market.

Bad reporting on IGN's part. The actual transcript had Sony quoted saying it's entering the latter HALF of the PS5 life cycle. I recommend checking other sources or the actual press release itself. IGN has been slipping recently

I knew since the beginning of the release of the PS5 in the Xbox series X that these consoles releasing in a somewhat pandemic time was a terrible time to release a console. Also I kind of saw this coming but I'm all right with it. I wanted to play the PS5 so I can play PS4 and PS5 games so I'm fine if Sony's going to be going to PlayStation 6 because I probably won't be buying it. Having something that pays PS4 games and PS5 games is good enough for me
The ps5 pro will usher in more enhancements for ps4 and ps5 games. I think that should be your target.

The plastic box strategy is not long for this world. Sure it still serves a purpose and probably always will, but tying your entire brand to that box when everything else is going for mobility is a terrible idea
As far as I'm concerned, why would I ever spend $500 on what is basically an ultra-locked-down PC that only runs games, when I could spend a similar amount on a real PC that's either cheaper, more powerful, or portable/handheld and runs 95% of the same games (but also allows me to use all of that powerful hardware for things other than games). Traditional consoles just don't really make sense anymore imo. The switch is really the only one with a serious value proposition anymore because it's significantly cheaper than most handheld PCs, plus it has the entire library of Nintendo exclusives.

It comes down to this, the PS5 is way over priced. Also, I did not fall for their artificial scarcity either. I'm still happily playing my PS4. I'm playing armored core, elden ring and other games that I did not get a chance to play previously. At this time during the PS4s life cycle, I purchased it for under $300 with Fallout 4 as well, the PS5 is still wayyyy overpriced. I can't justify spending over $700 CAD for the PS5 after 4 years. no thanks.

It's not even that it's halfway into it's life that's the problem. The problem is this new generation of console is barely starting to show what it can do and we're already half way into the life of it.
And I just bought a PS5 two weeks ago because I recently got back into gaming after not playing for awhile from my PS4.

I've said PS5 is is almost certainly going to be my last console. Lots of reasons:
Games I get are better for on pc in terms of using a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller (or plug a controller into the pc).
Game preservation was damaged really since backwards compatibility was lost but Sony also having issues with pulling stuff.
Cost of a console which I could invest into a pc upgrade and not have to worry about getting a n actual console.
Getting perhaps fewer games as my library gets ever bigger and I replay games, but also lack of exclusives.
Not having to worry about working on newer consoles, just upgrade the PC.
The list goes on really. I've only got a handful of PS5 games and they nearly all could be on PC. It's strangle how with Steam/PC I'm happy with digital but not console, I think it's because Steam has built up trust in that they can take down games but anyone who's bought a game can still download it. With Sony if they take it down it's for existing purchasers not just new so I mainly stick with disc but in Sweden, games digitally I think cost more so avoid them if I can. Oh yeah, modding is doable on PC. It just feels like consoles are no longer for me.
PS4 was mine and it's because I saw the writing on the wall with physical gaming media in general. I went to purely PC and I'm glad that I did. PCs are becoming more accessible than ever. Consoles are probably on their last legs at this point.
You're also right about digital being better on PC. It's much safer to get digital on PC because the storefronts aren't dependent on the a console's lifespan to stay open.

A decent gaming PC would set you about $3-4K triple the cost of a PS5 and Xbox most people don't have that kind of money to spend.
Until PC gaming hard ware becomes affordable where you don't have to spend thousands of dollars then consoles will still be around.
@@ninopapalia1461 If you spend 3K-4K on a gaming PC you're getting ripped off. Mine was under 1,000 dollars, and I finance it. I can play modern games, and if not I can just lower the settings down. On medium alone it's better than the console version.
