Judging from most of the comments, it seems that most people with kids are buying the ps portal because of a multifamily situation using the console and wanting a separate ps experience.

Iv being using remote play/moonlight for years on different devices so have always seen the appeal of this device. I game stream while my wife is watching TV or sometimes in bed it's just nice to be able to play in different spots around the house and alows me to get game time in but not do it in a separate room from my wife so we can still spend some time together and chat which because we both work opposite shifts her in the week me Fri sat sun so we don't have to pay childcare care means we don't see a lot of eachother. I perhaps one eve a week to game by myself and get into it properly and then supplement with game streaming.
When this thing inevitably gets hacked so you can put moonlight/steam link on there I'll Def get one. It's pretty cheap for a large good quality screen and high quality controller, the g cloud for example is quite a bit more expensive and has a smaller screen and while decent controls not on par with the portal. It is more powerful and has more storage though and is actually a fairly capable emulation device which explains the extra cost
If I was them I’d get the base model steam deck first. I have a steam deck already though so I think I’m going to also get this.

If most people knew what they were talking about, corporate executives and investors would be legally investigated when suspected of foul play ASAP. Solidify that precedent, then the overall quality of necessary and recreational services/products alike will spike. Not an advanced or fantastical concept. It's painfully basic.
This is why I see the big three doing what Nintendo did. Home consoles made sense back in the 2000's before smartphones but their is a demand for wanting to take your games with you because people are constantly moving.

Hey I can play on my couch while the wife watches Netflix or in bed before going to sleep or in my kids room while I keep an eye on them plus hey guess what I can still use my phone without having to worry about closing out apps.
And they said the Wii U wasn't a genius idea.
This is my exact use case as well. I love it.
Fucking LOVE my portal. Bought two of them. It's great when you're a dad and want to get a quick gameplay in. It's not for everybody, but my wife and I have had ours for 2 months and they have been nothing short of fantastic. I have a backbone for my phone but it's not comfortable at all. Especially for bigger hands. Get over it dude. No wonder your channel is limping along 😂

What sucks about the portal is you can't turn the screen off and just use it as a controller. It always has to be on and remote play connected. I would prefer a 2nd mode where it's just another controller for when your at home and don't need to remote play
That would be a great feature. Sony is being pretty petty not doing that because I guarantee it’s just so they can sell more controllers.

@@Murphys_Law9 sad you have to pay extra to make sure your product works it should just work my ps5 co teoller just started stick drifting I have to pay extra cause it's a defect from them I don't ruin my stuff and to have to ship it back and hope they fullfill your warranty cause there are Grey areas is nuts the fact that you are whit knitting for corporations is funny you need to even own a ps5 to even play the portal so have fun spending 700 dollars just to do what the Wii U does except the Wii U is actually touch screen
@@browski2123 sad that u don’t understand that anything electronical could fail. Got protection plan with all my products, controllers, laptops, rc cars, tvs, etc… when there is any issue i can get it fixed or replaced easily for no additional cost.

PS Portal definitely has its niche market, i was even interested and almost got one, but it's biggest flaw (at least for now) is that there's no direct connectivity to the PS5 in the same way the PS3 and PSP (pro sure PS4 & Vita, too) could connect to each other without ever needing any form of internet, essentially it was an ad-hoc connection. If they were to add that, I could see myself getting one.
I use mine daily, I use it at work, if i can't use my tv because the kids are on it, if my wife is watching her shows and we still want to be in the same room, when i travel for work, when im out of town visiting family. I don't understand your complaints, if you don't like or want it dont get it. Problem solved.

Plenty of reasons.
You want to play while in a different room than your TV. If I want to spend time with my wife while she's playing switch and she wants to be in the bedroom or somewhere else, I can follow.
You want to double use the TV. So someone is visiting or maybe someone in the house wants to watch TV. Easy alternative for you to use your portal.
If you travel you can remote play without the need of having an Uber small screen in your phone or a way too large one in your tablet.
Can't get it in the UK, as soon as it re-stocks it sells out within hours! I now have one and it's great 👍
Because I work from home and my work area is in the same space as my PS5. The portal allows me to get out of that space and play somewhere else comfortably.

The Portal is awesome. I can game and then when I get tired of my living room, I can go to my bed and keep going.
I can also game next to my gf when she is sleeping and she loves that. Instead I would be on the next room until 2 or 3 am and we love spending time together even if we are doing different things.
The other portable devices are awesome but if you have all your library on PS, then it is a no brainer for the price!
I like the look, but what put me off is the lack of Bluetooth, I have the Sony NS7 which would be great with this... But it's only Sony proprietary Bluetooth..😢
I find it kind of ironic that Sony is surprised, mostly because they fudged up the Vita so badly they must have just assumed (wrongly) that the handheld market was dead or something. Even a half-version of their handheld is selling well, because it's an appealing concept when done even remotely decent. Not that I want the Portal itself, but I did want the Vita to succeed and Sony killed it by overcharging and underdelivering, not because of the market itself. It just continues to highlight how utterly disconnected Sony is from their customers more then anything.
I just ordered one. Sony hit the sweet spot that wii u failed at. That you have to be within a finger of the system (exaggeration). This is definitely the Dad Machine.
I was on the fence but now leaning towards getting it.. Reason being I can play ps4/ps5 in my bedroom.. Also with ps plus going up drastically I’m seriously thinking of canceling.. All I ever really use it for is cloud saves between my ps4 & 5 so I can play in multiple rooms.. The portal seems like the perfect remedy for that issue

I bought one think it's awesome I can play my ps5 while watching a sporting event or if someone wants to use the TV. Also tried this thing over my sister's house 30 miles away had no lag no artifacts it felt like I was playing on a portable device like the switch didn't even feel like it was streaming. Great device.

The reason I bought it and really enjoy using it is that in my house, we have one TV. My wife and I both use the PlayStation so I can’t hook it up in an office (if I had one). If my wife is watching the TV after her day of work, I can play my games while sitting next to her. It fits my needs/situation perfectly since most of my games are on PlayStation (not Steam or Switch). The PlayStation Portal is extremely niche, but it’s exactly what I wanted.

I bought it to have whenever I go to my girlfriend's place to chill the night with her. But I have been finding good to use at home in my bed. Being that my PS5 is in my living room. It's like the Nintendo Switch. Nobody I know uses the switch on the TV unless you're playing with someone else.

Well, I would want one because my play time is very limited and I would have a window of about 2 hours (possibly daily) right before bed where I could play with this device since I don’t have access to my tv. Would this device be useful to me? Yes, but does it do what they say it does well??

Just copped one last night and I love it so far. As a 30 year old who works full time and then some it’s nice to play ps5 on my couch or in bed or simply when I don’t feel like isolating myself (👩❤️💋👨)!! I posted a short unboxing it on my page for fun!! 💯
Apparently if u connect your ps5 with wire, the lag isn’t that bad. And it’s nice playing it in bed.
Although that is true, if you have a solid Wi-Fi mesh well under -40 dB, you shouldn’t be experiencing much input on the 5 GHz band. I’ve had zero lag with my portal and I’ve tested it at all corners of my home.

Yes you can play as long as the portal and your ps5 are both connected to the internet but they do not need to be on the same connection. I havnt had much of an issue with latency especially with the ps5 hardwired.

I used to think it was dumb af. But thats because its not marketed to me. I have my own tv and have no problem using remote play with my phone. But for a dad or someone who needs the level of accesibility ig i can understand the niche.
It's just a Sony branded controller for phones. It makes it more convenient to play mobile games. If I owned a phone, I would be interested in using it to play games on it. However, I only have an Amazon tablet. I think it would be too big to use with it.
I love the portal, it’s actually made the PlayStation fun. I personally hate playing games stuck to a tv but I also don’t like handheld game graphics. But I love being able to walk around the house with ps5 graphics, that’s what made me love it.

Because I’m a family man who shares my big 65” OLED with a wife and two kids. And when I want to continue using my PS5 I take my Portal downstairs to continue playing there. It’s way more convenient than using my phone which I also use for work so there is always notifications and phone calls during my free time. And no, for my line of work “do not disturb” is not an option.

The most I've ever played on my PS5 since I bought it at launch, is via Portal in the recent months. Works for me, so I don’t really care what others say

I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I am. I can leave my apartment go to the rooftop and play while sparking up.
I tried it out. It works well in the right conditions and the duel sense haptics are nice, but ultimately I’ll never buy my own since my Steam Deck OLED does the job just fine. Mind you, the Steam Deck took some tinkering which I know a lot of people are not interested in doing.

Everyone was putting the portal down in shame and its still sold out. I had remote play on the phone and on my steam deck. The portal is superior in remote play for me. They do got to do something about the joysticks. They feel a little loose. That's my only complain. I'm shock by now extremerate or 3rd parties haven't come out with custom shell and buttons for the portal.

Why do we buy this? I’ll answer from my own use case scenario that I’m sure others can see. Whether it’s for them or not, that’s totally cool.
For me, I like a no compromise dedicated solution to remote playing. Yes, I understand remote play is already a compromise when compared to playing on the console itself. That’s not news.
However, the upside is playing my PS5 anytime I want. I have a kid. I work a full time game dev job remote. I teach at a college 3 days a week. Sometimes I don’t want to compromise my time to jam on FF7, or play Helldivers with the boys.
It all depends on outside factors like your network, but for me, it’s been great.
I am just hoping for a real Sony handheld.

Everyone Saying that they Bought it to play PS5 your Phone, Tablet, Laptop, Pc, Steam Deck can all stream these and the Ps5 controller is Blutooth and universal like an Xbox Controller and you can Use Headphones on any of thess devices and Done have to Blow 200 dollars on proprietary headphones and most pretty much every time the connection is better that the Portal

In most Asían homes they have only one Smart T.V (cultural thing).
So, lets say someone wants to watch a movie or any t.v show and someone wants to play their Ps5 at the same time.
That is a good reasonn why Playstation Portal is selling well.
That and portale just really compliments the p5 also this device arent for gamers who into the steam deck or the switch just someone who wants to play certain games and wants the ability to not take up a whole tv all day playing it or has company over,i always seen gaming as mostly a solo thing anyway most people arent sitting onthe couch playing 2 and 4 player games,it just never fully took off😂

Yea you are, if the main TV that your ps5 is on and you don't have a monitor. Someone can still play. Should you be able to have psn. Yes, but baby steps. Sony is testing the waters. Sony did say in the past they weren't doing anymore handhelds.
I no longer have to glue to the TV when playing the PS5, which makes me game even more. Plus, it's much more convenient than other kinds of remote play set ups. People who whine about why the PS Portal is not a truly standalone handheld PS5 has gotta be realistic here, even if such machine can technically exist it would be way more expensive than a PS5 console, and then they would complain about its price.

Grant it there were multiple other issues the wiiu had, but I still find it funny how Sony took ideas from a failed console and made money off it.

Couple of reasons why this is selling. 1 people know it sucks but if it fails sony wont move further with handhelds so bite the bullet i guess 2. People learned from sony’s past failures like the PS VITA TV being sold on clearance for like 50 bucks now it re sells for even higher on ebay and once modded it’s actually a nice emulator

The Flow has hacked the PS Portal. When the exploit goes live THEN MAYBE I'll buy a PS Portal. For now I'm fully happy with my Switch OLED.
Corporations lie. So i wouldnt believe a word they say. I have lots of gamer friends and none of them got a portal. I would ask around and see if its even true.
I love my portal , I can have my son play on my ps5 and the tv isn’t being taken up for my wife or myself? Or I can use it with headphones and curl up comfy in the bed or side chair. It’s just helpful. Simple as that.
Why I would buy it? Because my wife and kids watch their shows while I would really like to play on my PS5. A compromise I'd be willing to pay money for, but not THAT much what SONY's asking.. So I'm with Rich on this.

I have 3 kids and everyone I bought a PlayStation5 and I’m glad I don’t have to buy for them 3 tVs so I bought for the PlayStation portal it’s nice to see my daughter laying in her bed and playing and maybe I will surprise you I bought one for myself and my wife watching TV and I’m glad she doesn’t have to see me playing games
We want a handheld gaming device with a streamlined version of Windows 11 that can run the ENTIRE Steam library. Windows 11 is garbage on handheld devices.

I know it sounds crazy but a lot of times my wife and I will have a movie or show on but I still wanna get some PS5 in the portal is so perfect. It’s great, do I want a stand alone device? Absolutely! But this is still great for my situation
Some people would like to play games while taking a crap. Ease of play in bed and not taking up a tv. It’s extremely easy to see why this thing is popular especially amongst families. Please don’t say the Steam deck. Getting a steam deck is twice the cost of a portal and you would have to build a completely different library. Switch should of died a while ago and can barely run anything anymore.

Most American phone plans give you the option for a Hotspot.
