" I don't care how mainstream or underground an album is, I just care if it's a good album or not" Yes, exactly, thank you. People care WAAYYYY too much about if a band is mainstream or not.. Is the music good? That's all to think about. And "nothing else matters" 😉
I’m the same way. In fact, some albums I like are albums other people don’t like. I love KFD by WASP, many WASP fans do not like that album because of the fact it’s industrial. But I don’t care. In fact, I think the industrial sound fits really well with the album’s overall dark tone.
I like Escape, it has a nice smooth, melodic sound, which is a good divergence from the rest of the album, creates variety and makes the pounding of the other songs that much more impactful when the album is listened to all the way through. It also has a cool "rebel anthem" feel to it. I also like Unforgiven II and Astronomy is really good.
I feel the same about “Escape” it’ has one of the catchiest choruses on the record and actually one of my favorite tracks on the record it’s so different sounding to the rest of the album!! if I had to chose a least favorite it would be “Trapped Under Ice”! and favorite track would be “CREEPING DEATH” COME ON’nnnnn 🥵🔥🔥
Thank you for throwing the whole "sellout" controversy out the window, because it's a bunch of bullshit. There are interviews from before even Kill 'Em All was released where they expressed the desire to slow down/simplify their sound. They were never against making ballads, nor were they ever against making music videos (they just didn't think the timing was right during the Kill/Ride/Puppets era, they were never outwardly against it). Heck, there wasn't even that much of a difference between TBA and their 80s albums. You could easily throw songs like FWTBT, Harvester, FTB, TLITD, TTTSNB, Escape, EOTB, Orion, and heck even Seek & Destroy on that record and they would totally fit. And there's even some thrashier songs on the album like Holier Than Thou, Through the Never, and Struggle Within. It wasn't the drastic change in style that people made it out to be. It still felt like Metallica and the efforts on the album felt 100% genuine. It didn't feel like they purposefully tailored it to appeal to as many people as possible, it was just them making the record they felt like they should make at the time. The fact that it's the best selling metal album of all time is something they had no control over. If you dislike their post-80s stuff because it just isn't your thing, that's fine. But the "sellout" controversy is a bunch of gatekeeping horseshit perpetuated by neckbearded manchildren who were pissed that girls started liking the band.
We always liked Metallica and metal in general but when we starting PLAYING metal more (90s) I guess they got salty lol. Put up with a lot of bs just to do what we love but that's life, and it's worth it. My mom is the same age as the guys in Metallica and loved them when Cliff was still alive. She told me she saw plenty of other women at a diverse amount of metal shows back then.. we aren't all there for a boyfriend or just groupies.. not shitting on those women at all, its just a pain when you're assumed to be in that camp when it's definitely not the sole reason you came lol. I was born in 91 with the black album and she played it a lot postpartum, still does actually. Just picture a 60 year old grandmother with grey hair and glasses yelling the lyrics to the god that failed. She did just that a couple weeks ago when I visited 🤘🏻 We aren't super rare like people think, they just don't see us.
Hey, I'm really enjoying these 'Reviewing Every Album' videos. Metallica's first five albums are all incredible in my opinion, it's such a shame they kind of went downhill after that.
Enter Sandman was my intro into Metallica and metal. So I decided to look into more of The Black Album and Metallica. I really started to like metal, so I decided to look in more metal bands, and the rest is history. I have to thank The Black Album for introducing me into metal. Sooooo yeah 🖕🖕 you metal elitists!
I have this love/hate relationship with Metallica. First 5 records are untouchable classics, no ifs, ands or buts. After that? 75% of it is just mindless dribble and filler.
great vid, subscribed! Whiskey in the jar, whilst bad, is an an old Irish folk song. I think Thin Lizzy played the version that Metallica most covered back in the 70s.
Just as I was about to ask for Metallica on the Judas Priest video this came up in my feed. Good shit my man. Metallica were the first band that I listened to when exploring metal so of course I love to see it. Personal favourite for me of course is Master of Puppets but Ride the Lightning is so close behind it.
My ranking of all Metallica's STUDIO albums; I"m not including any live albums, collaborations or covers: 1. Ride the Lightning (my third favorite album of all time) 2. And Justice For All (horribly underrated and underappreciated) 3. Master of Puppets (really solid album but not as strong as 1 and 2 IMO) 4. Kill 'Em All (Metal up your ass!) 5. The Black Album (this really gets a lot of unnecessary hate) 6. Hardwired To Self-Destruct (had a few good songs) 7. Death Magnetic (had two or three decent tracks but I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing this album again and I'd be just fine) 8. Load (yep, the name fits. They dropped a big load of turd on this one.) 9. Re-Load (now they just dropped a big pile of steaming dump on their own legacy) 10. St. Anger (The Unnamed Feeling was a decent song but that doesn't change the fact that this entire album sounds like Lars farting on a snare drum.)
Nice list honestly though I don't think And Justice is underrated at all, infact it's often cited as a favourite by fans and actually alot of musicians, I meen also one is kinda one of there biggest hits in there whole catalogue
How you felt about Escape is exactly how I felt about Fight Fire With Fire. I usually just skip it, Ride the Lightning is a fine place to start for me, also considering it's the title track. FfWf just never grabbed me
I've been going through a Metallica phase because quarantine has me going back to all the stuff that made me first fall in love with metal, so I've listened to all these recently. This might be a spicy list for some, but it's genuinely how I feel right now in my life in the year 2020: 1. Ride the Lightning 2. Master of Puppets 3. The Black Album 4. Kill 'Em All 5. Load 6. ...And Justice for All 7. Death Magnetic 8. ReLoad 9. St. Anger 10. Hardwired... to Self Destruct I've always loved Escape, so given that, there's no reason RtL wouldn't be #1 for me. The Black Album is so high for a few reasons - I'm not necessarily a thrasher, so I actually really dig the slower, riffier Sabbathy kind of metal on here, plus the two incredible ballads. I'm a pop lover at heart. Sonically, this is one of the best albums ever made. As a musician who's recorded in studios, those experiences really make you appreciate this album's breathtaking production even more. (Fun fact, Lars used the same snare drum that Dave Grohl used on Nevermind - the Tama Terminator. Probably had something to do with why the drum sound on both is so good!) I definitely agree that taking half of Load and adding two or three songs from ReLoad would have resulted in a classic album. I made that album as a spotify playlist and listen to it often. ...AJFA has always been overrated for me. I'd say about half the record is undeniably classic, the other half is the kind of slow, chuggy metal that I think they did way better on the Black Album. This is also where Metallica's overly bloated song structures really start to become an issue for me. So, St. Anger is undeniably a worse album than Hardwired and it absolutely deserves the reputation it has as one of the worst metal albums ever made. But here's the thing, it's inspired trash. There's some genuine emotion that goes into how fucking awful that album is and there's some legitimately compelling anguish in James's voice. It also resulted in Some Kind of Monster, which is one of the best music docs ever made. Hardwired is just so boring, bland and uninspired to me. There's a few good tracks for sure, but goddamn, the riffs just suck. It's a real chore for me to get through and is the band at their most "going through the motions."
My dad owned everything from Kill Em All to Load when they first came out, and that was some of the first metal music I ever listened to growing up when he passed those records down to me. I'll rank em all real quick (see what I did there)? 1. Master of Puppets 2. Ride the Lightning (if only cause of Escape) 3. And Justice for All (even with the bass issue) 4. Kill Em All 5. The Black Album 6. Everything else lmao The first 5 albums are the only ones I listen to and the only ones anyone new to Metallica should listen to. Everything else from Load to now I couldn't give less of a shit for aside from some of Garage Inc and S&M (No Leaf Clover is pretty good). While I'm at it, happy birthday to Moose!
I've just listened to the first 5 albums, so I'll just rank them and talk about some points. 1- Ride The Lightning 2- Kill 'em All 3- ...And Justice For All 4- Master Of Puppets 5- The Black Album 1* Dude... this is BY FAR the best Metallica Album in my opinion. Every song is FANTASTIC (even Escape, I like it). 2* This album is kind of forgotten, but it's one of the best PURE thrash metal albums of all time. I like everything in this album, and I don't care if the production is poor. This is incredible. 3* Every time I listen to this album again, I like it more! Ok, there is no bass, but bro: The best Lars drums performace; the most complex lyrics, the most creative guitar work (just my opinion, obviously). This is so epic. 4* I love this album, but... I don't know, I felt this is like "Ride The Lighting, but heavier". Overall, I think it's a great album, but really overrated. The production is the best of these 5 albums, but the songs temselves aren't. Anyway, really good songs here. 5* I agree that the band gone more comercial on this album but whatever, I don't care. If you listen the songs, you'll probably like them. I think this album doesn't desearves this success, but it's not that bad, come on. It gets so much more hate than it desearves. I'm brazilian, so sorry for some grammar mistakes lol. Nice video man
10. Load 9. Reload 8. St Anger 7. Hardwired to Self Destruct 6. Death Magnetic 5. Kill Em All 4. Black Album 3. Ride the Lighting 2. Master of Puppets 1. And Justice For All
Load is an album I'll always have a soft spot for. It was my intro to metal and what made me fall in love with this band. I clearly see the flaws, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't return to it all the time.
Good video, I really like these discography reviews you're doing. Is there a chance you'll be looking into Slayer's discography in the future? Also, on the subject of first albums, I think I got lucky. Be me. Be me at 13. Finally decide to give Metallica a try. Decide to just listen to the latest they had out. Latest album is St Anger. Still listen to it and kind of enjoy it. Continue to listen to the rest of the music getting Garage Days, Load and ReLoad, still impressed enough to dive deeper. Finally get the first four albums (and the black album), get blown away by everything and remain a fan to this day. A few years later, Death Magnetic comes out. Get Death Magnetic, still thoroughly enjoy what's on offer. Finally Lulu comes out, story ends there.
Also, controversial note, their performance of Moth to the Flame at the Grammys with Lady Gaga was phenomenal, fuck the haters, I'd gladly take a Metallica colab album with Gaga.
You actually made me want to listen to lulu again! I am going to give it another listen. Geeee you have a point there. Takes guts to make such an album.
Would Jason bass on justice even really make a difference overall ? Better or worse? The funnest Metallica fans are the ones from 1983-1986 who say they are hardcore lol
Love this video man, and a lot of your others which I’ve just discovered! I am so with you on Lulu, I think the hate for it largely misses the point fucking entirely. Like obviously this is a weird, bleak, difficult album and they all just did it cuz they felt like it. People act like the band and Lou thought this was a completely normal record to make and thought it would be a hit. It’s obviously gonna be one that a lot of people dislike, it’s ridiculous and bravely so, and that’s ok.
I was on board with you until Lulu..but ok I respect the argument. Masters of Puppets is my nr. 1 for sure. It would be really cool to talk about Nuclear Assault albums if that wasn't covered before.
Here are my thoughts on each one (out of 10): Kill 'Em All: 8/10. It's fast, aggressive, energetic, and great for when you want to rock out and have fun. Ride the Lightning: 10/10. I agree with everything you said about this album, though I actually kind of like Escape. Every song on this album is really good, and most are incredible. Master of Puppets: 10/10. It's pretty much the perfect album. Every song is different and unique, but all of them are amazing. And Justice for All: 7/10. There are some really, really great songs on this one, but some just feel forgettable, and the title track is way too long. My main problem is that the guitars sound oddly muffled, it's like someone talking with a cold. Other than those few issues, the album as a whole is great. Black Album: 8/10. Most of the songs on this one are really good, and it has some of their most iconic tracks ever. A few are kinda boring, like Holier than Thou, but the rest easily make up for it. Load: 6/10. This one is.. interesting. The start and end of the album have some pretty good tracks, but the middle is kinda bad, especially Cure and Poor Twisted Me. It's a great album for long road trips though. ReLoad: 5/10. A few good songs, but most are boring filler at best. It's basically just the leftovers that didn't make it into Load. Garage Inc: 6/10. I agree that a lot of the tracks are really stupid (So What might be their dumbest song ever), but there are some bangers on there too, like Am I Evil, and a lot of this album is at least pretty good. S&M: 7/10. I'm a big fan of mixing metal with orchestra, so I personally enjoy this one a lot. I do feel like some performances could've been better though. I like that they made two original songs for this instead of just using existing ones. St Anger: 2/10. While this is absolutely their worst regular studio album, I don't HATE it. If you can look past the mess of stupid lyrics, horrible vocals, trash can drums, and awful production, there are some genuinely good riffs hidden in there that could've had a lot more potential. Death Magnetic: 7/10. The production isn't great, some songs are forgettable, and everything is way too long, but this album has some of their best songs. Lulu: 1/10. Just no. Every song on this album is just an old man rambling nonsense over a guitar track. The one point I'm giving it is only for the table memes. Hardwired: 8/10. The later half has some boring filler, but most of the songs on this one are great, especially the last one. S&M2: 6/10. It's just S&M again but slightly worse. 72 Seasons: 8/10. This one is basically Hardwired 2. The first half is great, the last song is great, but the second half is mostly forgettable.
Master is the perfect blend of youthful exuberance but with greater skill and a matured sense of composition and arrangement. After that, they started to repeat themselves, but without the energy. I do believe if Justice was edited to a single album and Jason's bass was present (which is quite good) then it'd be up there with Puppets. And if you ever wondered what Metallica woudl sound like had Les Claypool joined the band -- check it out: ua-cam.com/video/7CNp7qDh4iE/v-deo.html
Awesome video again man. I love some Metallica albums. Not gonna go into detail on each album but here are a few thoughts on some of them. I personally think Master of Puppets to be my favourite and their best. I love how thrilling and powerful and exciting the record turned out to be and still as relevant and important in metal. I love Ride the Lightening too. Load is actually one of my favourites which I really like a lot and very underrated. I think St. Anger is a respect for me and I understood what James went through, there were some tracks I like but it's not all perfect however it is not to me one of THE worst metal albums of all time. Now for Lulu I respect the idea and the concept and I am a fan of Lou Reed but the execution to the record was not great and there were moments I tried to get into it but I couldn't. I respect the record but I've heard worse. I really enjoy the Black Album and the production is one of their best, I find it overrated that I don't personally call it a classic. There are very very good songs on there but it's not as a strong album to me like the first two I've mentioned and choose the most. I like the later Metallica but you can't go wrong with earlier albums. Great stuff and keep it up, I like the segment a lot.
1. Metallica (Black Album) 2. Master Of Puppets 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Load 5. Death Magnetic 6. ...And Justice For All 7. Reload 8. St. Anger 9. Kill Em All 10. Hardwired To Self Destruct 11. 72 Seasons
Don’t know if in the time that this video was uploaded to now you’ve come across this tidbit of information, but it wasn’t Jason Newsted’s fault what happened to the sound of the bass in And Justice For All, it was Lars’. He thought it would be disrespectful to have a prominent bass in the album following Cliff’s death and made in production his bass drum be the only audible bass sound of the record. It’s a fucking mental excuse, but that’s what happened.
Thank you. I don't care if I hate every other opinion I ever hear from you. It only matters if it sounds good. Idgaf about 'sellout' or whatever. Fuck that shit.
I personally think that Justice is better than Ride The Lightning even considering the lack of bass on it,because the songs themselves are all killer. I would say that The Frayed Ends Of Sanity is too long, but just for the middle part of the song it gets a pass. Master is still my favourite though, one of the best metal albums I heard,no weak minute on it. I am genuinely surprised that you enjoyed Lulu that much, but it just shows that every person has different opinions. I personally listen to it only if I am in need of good laugh, singing along to "I am the table" lines always gets me in a great mood. Overall, while I disagreed with you in places, your commentary is pretty on point,at times it sounded like you see the thoughts in my head and recite them out loud
1. And Justice for All 2. Master of Puppets 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Kill 'Em All 5. Metallica 6. Hard Wired to Self-Destruct 7. Death Magnetic 8. Load 9. St. Anger 10. ReLoad
I actually am really weird with my Metallica... If I ranked their albums, I'd put 'em like this: Kill 'Em All: 4.5/5 - pure, unapologetic thrash metal and what kickstarted an underground genre. Ride The Lightning: 5/5 - I really love this throughout, my personal favorite album of their's, yes even Escape Master of Puppets: 5/5 - while not as emotionally attached to this, I still love it throughout, it's fucking killer and Disposable Heroes is a masterpiece ...And Justice For All: 4.5/5 - BASS... MISSING... Most of these songs are killer, but just lack something due to the bass. Blackened is one of the greatest songs they ever made, Harvester is HEAVY, Sanity is thrashy as fuck. The Black Album: 3.5/5 - It just bores me towards the end... I love Sandman, Roam, Sad But True, Of Wolf And Man, Holier than Thou! But man, the original Unforgiven isn't my thing, Struggle Within, Through The Never all are skips for me. Nothing Else Matters is great though. Load: 4/5 - I love this albeit not at all similar to the "original" Metallica. Mama Said, Hero Of The Day, The Outlaw Torn, Until It Sleeps, Thorn Within, House That Jack Built? This is actually my third favorite album from a personal standpoint if I were to rank them. Reload: 4.5/5 - I fucking love this, Low Man's Lyric, Where The Wild Things are, and my god... Unforgiven II, are all masterpieces. Memory Remains, Devil's Dance, Fuel, Bad Seed are all fun butt-rock ish but FUN! My 2nd favorite tbh. St. Anger: 2.5/5 - It's got some good moments, Dirty Window, St. Anger, etc. It could have been great had it been trimmed down with different production, but the snare gives me a headache over the course of a full listen. Death Magnetic: 4/5 - I think if you give this album some Black Album production and mixing rather than that brickwalled shite we got, this could've been the perfect album to follow Justice in 1990. It's killer, All Nightmare Long, Day That Never Comes, My Apocalypse? All killer Hardwired To Self-Destruct: 3.5/5 - I cannot listen to this one all the way through, the first half is great, the latter half though, snoozefest. Atlas Rise, Halo On Fire and Moth Into Flame are all great and worthy of being on some of the older albums imo. 72 Seasons: 4.5/5 - I actually have come to love this despite not feeling any way towards it upon release. However, seeing them on the tour, giving it time to sink in, etcetera. I have come to love it. The best James has sounded in years, Lars doing Lars things, Bass is mixed well, just cut a few minutes off here and there and it could be perfect. Only song I dislike is You Must Burn, so cheesy dear lord. Inamorata is a song worthy of being held up like Fade To Black, One and the Thing That Should Not Be... If Darkness Had a Son is a stomper bringing me back to the Justice album, I love this album so much.
I'm disappointed you don't like Death Magnetic that much. I reviewed this album today and I love this record. There's not a single bad song on it. It's even my 4th favorite Metallica album so far. It'll probably stay like that because I predict Hardwired and 72 Seasons won't be as good as Death Magnetic.
One thing I have to say about St Anger: the album wasn't really made to be "good," it was made to keep the band from imploding. It doesn't forgive the poor quality of the album, but it certainly explains it
I actually really like Load/Reload. Honestly I find myself coming back to them more than the early stuff, not cuz I think they're better or anything, just cuz I've heard the old stuff a million times. I know people hate them cuz it's not thrash, theres a ton of filler tracks, and it was a bit of a warning sign for what was to come with St. Anger. But I think they're definitely better if you just take all the good songs from both albums and listen to it that way. I get why people think they're bad but I enjoy em.
It's strange, isn't it, that it took them just eight years to release five fantastic and genre defining records. But in the 30 years that followed they have produced nothing remotely on par with that legacy. Apart from a few good songs, it's all just plain boring or downright ridiculous (yeah, looking at you, St. Anger). I kinda respect them for Lulu, though, because at least once they were thinking outside the box and took a risk. (However, I'm still not sure if I like it.)
agreed. I think James kind of burned out which is a real shame as I consider him a real genius, musically. A lot of leads that people attribute to Kirk were, IMO, played by James or at least written by him. 4 example Fade 2 Black intro lead. It's possible that all the touring, fame, drinking & drugs took a toll on him. I believe Battery is about amphetamine (they claim its about a certain rock club but that doesn't make sense with the lyrics). MOP is about drugs, probably coke but the line "sucking darkest CLEAR" sounds more like meth. & alcohol can be really devastating in large amounts/ long term.
Late to the video I know, but very understandable and respectable scores here. My list would go something like this (be warned, there are some controversial rankings): 1: Master of Puppets. One of the best thrash metal albums of all time bar none. It’s everything great about Ride The Lightning slightly improved and without any underwhelming songs (looking at you Escape). Top notch lyrics, solos, riffs, production, songwriting, everything. 10/10. 2: Ride The Lightning. Amazing album. Definite step up from Kill Em All. James’ vocals are still raw and full of energy, but also more controlled. Production is better, more variety in terms of sound and composition, better lyrics. Escape is an underwhelming song to me, though still far from a bad song. 9.5/10. 3: And Justice For All. Metallica’s most technical and progressive album. They went longer and more complicated with these songs in terms of structure, tempo changes, time signature changes, complexity of riffs and solos. Also I would argue it’s their darkest album lyrically. Biggest problems are the lack of bass on the mix, the dry drum sound, and some songs are a bit too long for their own good. 8.5/10. 4: Kill Em All. A great starting point for the band. Arguably their most raw album in terms of production and sound. You can hear the heavy influence of bands like Diamond Head and Iron Maiden and Mötorhead. Musically, the album is kind of one dimensional, James’ vocals aren’t the best, and the solos are very samey. 8/10. 5: Black album. Good album. Definite step up in terms of production and mixing, though definitely a more commercial album. Not a bad thing though; there’s a reason this album sold so well. Some songs like Enter Sandman and Sad But True are slightly overplayed, and some lackluster songs (Wherever I May Roam and Don’t Tread On Me), but still a lot of good performances. 7.5/10. 6: Hardwired…To Self Destruct. Their best since the black album for me. Sure, it’s too long, musically there’s nothing new or special here, definitely some songs on the second disc that should’ve been left on the cutting room floor (Man UNkind, Murder One, Am I Savage). But the production and mixing is WAY better than Death Magnetic and St. Anger, plus it has some of their best songs in years (Spit Out The Bone, Atlas, Rise!, Moth Into Flame). 7/10. 7: Death Magnetic. Solid return to form for the band. Mixing is more balanced than St. Anger, though this albums mastering to me is almost unbearable. Prime example of all the wrong things about the loudness war. Lots of good riffs and songs here, but a lot of them are too long, plus the lyrics aren’t anything special or meaningful. I also think the quality of the album falls off after All Nightmare Long. Lack of new ideas doesn’t really help. 6.5/10. 8: St. Anger. Yep. I’m not of those people who thinks St. Anger is an overhated album. While it is very flawed (snare drum sound, poor production and mixing, songs that are way too long and repetitive), there is plenty of genuine raw emotion packed into this album, no doubt coming from the turmoil the band was going through during the recording. Plus, although they’re simple, I love a lot of the riffs, as well as the gritty guitar tone. Completely understand why many people hate it, but I don’t. 6/10. 9: Load. Not a very good album for me. Respect their attempt to diversify their sound and try new things, but for every good/great song (King Nothing, Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, Until It Sleeps) there’s a mediocre/boring/bad song (Cure, Ronnie, The House That Jack Built, 2x4). Overall it’s a mediocre album I can take or leave. 5/10. 10: ReLoad. Pretty much everything I said about Load also applies here, except there aren’t as many highs and the lows are worse. Songs like Attitude, Slither, Bad Seed, and Carpe Diem Baby are some of my least favorite Metallica songs. Boring tracks like Prince Charming and Low Man’s Lyric don’t help matters. Some definite highlights (Fuel, Unforgiven II, Fixxxer), but not many. 3.5/10.
1. Ride the lightning (10/10) 2. Master of puppets (10/10) 3. And justice for all (9/10) 4. Kill 'em all (8/10) 5. Black album (7/10) 6. Load (6/10) 7. Reload (5.5/10) 8. Death magnetic (5.5/10) 9. 72 seasons (5/10) 10. Hardwired to self destruct (5/10) 11. St. Anger (2/10)
1. Black Album 2. Master of Puppets 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Kill Em All 5. Garage Inc. 6. Death Magnetic 7. Hardwired... To Self Destruct 8. Load 9. Reload 10. St. Anger 11. Lulu
All the music on that EP is included on the "Garage Inc" album, which we reviewed. I don't see the point in reviewing the same pieces of music twice in one video.
Well, I love Lulu, St. Anger, Load Reload and the Black Album, the all over the places Metallica, and I think that the thrashy beginings and now a days Metallica is ok... Nothing bad...
I didnt get into Metallica until the Through the Never movie dropped (was working at an Imax theater at the time). And funny enough I decided i'd listen to St Anger first, since obviously the hate it gets is all ringing so even i heard of the controversy. But honestly I kind of like it? At this point I would say the production of Death Magnetic hurts my ears more than the production of St Anger. The fact DM is clipping on the final product makes my dumb audio brain lag. But the rough mix quality of Anger has grown on me. Not to say its a perfect album, hell I really only like about half of it: Frantic, St Anger, most of Some kind of Monster, Dirty Window, and Unnamed Feeling. and on ocassion i can do Sweet Amber and shoot me again, but they and the rest are super hit and miss. And after i listened to Chris Jericho's podcast episode revisting Load and Reload, and hearing them give song suggestions (along with new "cut down" tracklists suggestion combining them) I argue that there are some extremely underrated songs. Unforgiven 2, Aint My Bitch (its dumb but i think its just a fun track), Fixxxer, Low Mans Lyric, Devils Dance (the bass line alone makes me love it), even Ronnie i think is a fun time. On a show i do my cohost did a similar thing where he made a new version (Called it Pre-Load, which is about as dumb as it could get) and its also a solid listing. Also Call of Ktulu is their best instrumental. I bounce between it and Orion but theres something about Ktulu, man. ALSO highly recommend checking out Bog Studios' videos where he does covers of metallica in the style of Meshuggah. his version of Ktulu is nuts
I’m not a big fan of anything after the black album , haven’t heard lulu tho Ride the lightning is my favorite , Fight fire with fire is my favorite Metallica song
Metallica to me is the one band that I'll mostly eat up anything they make. (Besides reload and st.anger, but even then, they have their moments for me) 1. .....And Justice For All 2. Ride The Lightning 3. Master of Puppets 4. Black Album 5. Kill Em' All 6. Load 7. Death Magnetic 8. Hardwired.......To Self-Destruct 9. Reload 10. St.Anger
Kill em all 4.5/5 Ride the lightning 5/5 Master of puppets 4.5/5 …and justice for all 5/5 Metallica(black album) 4/5 Load 4/5 Reload 2/5 St. Anger 1/5 Death Magnetic 3.5/5 Hardwired to self destruct 3/5
1. ...And Justice for All(10/10) my favourite album of all time 2. Master of Puppets(10/10) musically it's objectively better than Justice, but i still like it less 3. Black Album(9.5/10) hot take - The God that Failed has the best Metallica solo 4. Ride the Lightning(9.5/10) i am not the biggest fan of Escape 5. 72 Seasons(8.5/10) the title track, Room of Mirrors and Inamorata are better than some of songs on Justice but WHY DID THIS ALBUM HAD TO BE THIS LONG? 6. Kill'em All(8/10) great album but it kinda sounds the same(except Anesthesia of course) 7. Death Magnetic(8/10) pretty much the same as KEA but longer(although Unforgiven III is my favourite Unforgiven) 8. Hardwired to Self-Destruct (7.5/10) i like most of the songs, but it has too much fillers(and it's too long) 9. Load & ReLoad(6/10) good albums, but fillers are really annoying me 10. Lulu(3/10) it's so bad that it actually somehow becomes good 11. St. Anger(1/10) good to listen to when you're pissed off
Kill Em All 4/5 Ride The Lightning 4.5/5 Master of Puppets 5/5 And Justice For All 4/5 Black album 4/5 Load 3/5 Reload 3/5 St Anger 1/5 Death Magnetic 3.5/5 Hardwired 3.5/5 I know that a lot of people don’t like Load and Reload but I like those albums. Those 2 albums have some awesome hidden gems. The biggest problems with those albums is that they have some bad songs and filler. If you take out the bad songs, the albums would be better.
Yeah as someone who does consider himself a Thin Lizzy fan that Whiskey in the Jar cover outright pisses me off still. It does not sound good, James Vocals I find to be really annoying on that track. Garage Inc is so hit or miss with their covers.
I think Metallica never fully recovered from the St Anger period. Since then seems like they are trying to hard to put out good music and things don't come naturally anymore which is what made their earlier work so great.
Of fuckin course my least favourite album is Lulu 🤣 then again, I'm not a Lou Reed fan anyway, even at his best, so I've never got his style full stop! In my opinion I think the album was doomed from the start and that it's one of the worst albums of all time, but hey ho, we all hear stuff differently! I will say Metallica have some interesting riffs, but I just hate the awkwardness of Lou Reed's off beat, off time and off tempo spoken word lyrics cutting right through the whole mix! And Lars is especially atrocious on there aswell, you can tell it was done live cause he can't keep time for shit throughout the whole thing! The rest is as follows: 10) St Anger (some cool ideas but I can never make it through to them just cause of that fucking snare, and too many awful songs in between the halfway decent bits!) 9) Reload (I love The Memory Remains, but other than Fuel I could not tell you what else was on there even if I had a gun to my head 🤣) 8) Load (eh, like you said some parts are ok some are really bad) 7) Death Magnetic (I actually really like this album, reason why I put it below Hardwired is simply production. I get a headache every time I listen to it, which is a shame cause I actually dig the songs quite a lot. Apart from The Unforgiven 3. I think that's a terrible song lol!) 6) Hardwired (Spit Out the Bone in my opinion is the greatest song they have done since maybe And Justice For All!) 5) Black Album 4) Kill Em All 3) Ride The Lightning 2) Master of Puppets 1) ...and Justice for All (lack of bass aside, I fucking love how unbelievably tight it sounds, and the intricacy of the playing. Never mind the songs are just so crushing!) Great video man 🤘🤘
We all know the first four albums are quite good. In modern times, I didn't dislike the Black Album because of "selling out" but because of boring, arena rock lyrics/sound. Countdown to Extinction slowed down too but was much better overall lyrically & sonically. Also Death Magnetic, almost everywhere but here, is scored on what it isn't (St Anger) rather then what it is (a very mediocre rock album). Rick Rubin told them to use Master of Puppets as inspiration & outline for Death Magnetic. They fell more then a bit short in that regard.
I was watching your obituary video. Then I thought to myself.... wonder if this guy likes Metallica....he gives most Obituary albums 4 out of 10. Wonder what he will give master of puppets? Checked this video. 5 outa 5. Good review. I also love battery and orion.
I think it was genius to delete bass since cliff had died on justice. Who would ever have the balls to do that. It's just Metallica baby. A business machine
I agree with what ya said about the black album. It is great. I'm older than you and I hated it bad when it came out. I fucking detest the next well everything else besides the newest one . It was pretty good.
I'm new into metal music. I listened to every Metallica album and plan to listen to other metal bands. I'll probably listen to Megadeth next since Dave Mustaine was one of the founding members of Metallica but then founded his own band Megadeth.
I think any "success" that they experienced after the Black album came from the fact that the state of metal after the 80's became so piss-poor at least in the US that the bar fell pretty low at that point. Metallica takes on so many new fans who are discovering them with every release so you have to take into account the metal climate at the time.
Metallica albums ranked IMO: 1. Ride the Lightning 2. Master of Puppets 3. Kill Em All 4. And Justice for All 5. The Black Album 6. Hardwired... to Self Destruct 7. Death Magnetic 8. Reload 9. Load 10. St. Anger
If I were to compare Metallica albums to Batman movies, it would go something like this: Batman (1989): Master Of Puppets Batman Returns: And Justice For All Batman Forever: Load Batman And Robin: Reload
I disagree with a lot of your points, but I respect them. I especially disagree with your take on S&M2. I find it far superior to the original, particularly due to the fact that the original’s vocals are so heavily autotuned. S&M2 sounds far more organic, and features Hetfield’s most emotional performance ever with “The Unforgiven III”. You can even see his eyes water a little on the video. I will agree that the mixing needed a bit more polish though. I have the utmost respect for you for discrediting the tired “sellout” argument though! That was so refreshing. You focused only on the music itself.
personally the list was over after justice, i never listen to anything made after 1988. the album with the covers garage days has some good songs too but like i said its covers
Lulu is not considered an Metallica album. They even said so. This is a Lou Reed album with Metallica as the backing band. If you don't like Lou Reed, pass on it. That's it. As for the question of would any of Metallica's peers have the balls to do this? Yes they would. Would they do it? No. Why? Because Metallica is at the point where they can do whatever they want, their peers not so much.
"wheres my thrash metal aaaaah" I'd buy you a drink if you do a whole video doing that voice
Man knows my weakness: alcohol and silly voices
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Hahaha 🤣
“And Justice For All” is my favorite Metallica album
Same here.
Same
I think I'd like it more if it was mixed better. Still has some of their most emotionally raw stuff on it though.
“I’m not like other Metallica fans” 😂
Who cares about the “there’s no bass” argument, it sounds great anyway.
Sup fellow Escapees!? 😂
I would say Spit out the Bone is their best song since anything released since the Black Album.
Completely agree. It was kind of adorable to hear them revisit their thrash roots. \m/
Can kinda agree. Loved "That Was Just Your Life". True return to an almost 'Justice'/'Puppets' era Metallica
Yes. Agree
easily
its in my top 10 metallica songs
@@impetus_aus yeeeesss. Life and My Apocalypse were great, too. I really dug the thrash of Bone and Hardwired as well.
Hit the nail right on the fuckin' head. Fuck elitists and gatekeepers.
ur full of shit if u think that kill em all sounds like the black album
God how I hate acronyms
@@MarceloZ2 Lol same honestly, they can be confusing
Hey, I'm really enjoying these 'Reviewing Every Album' videos. Metallica's first five albums are all incredible in my opinion, it's such a shame they kind of went downhill after that.
I'm glad you really took the time to find some sort of redemption out of Lulu. Most of us don't have the patience to even give it a chance.
That sums it up nicely actually
great vid, subscribed! Whiskey in the jar, whilst bad, is an an old Irish folk song. I think Thin Lizzy played the version that Metallica most covered back in the 70s.
Devils dance? Man I love that song. Herfeild fell in love with jerry canntrel at this time and was influenced by alice in chains alot.
My ranking of all Metallica's STUDIO albums; I"m not including any live albums, collaborations or covers:
1. Ride the Lightning (my third favorite album of all time)
2. And Justice For All (horribly underrated and underappreciated)
3. Master of Puppets (really solid album but not as strong as 1 and 2 IMO)
4. Kill 'Em All (Metal up your ass!)
5. The Black Album (this really gets a lot of unnecessary hate)
6. Hardwired To Self-Destruct (had a few good songs)
7. Death Magnetic (had two or three decent tracks but I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing this album again and I'd be just fine)
8. Load (yep, the name fits. They dropped a big load of turd on this one.)
9. Re-Load (now they just dropped a big pile of steaming dump on their own legacy)
10. St. Anger (The Unnamed Feeling was a decent song but that doesn't change the fact that this entire album sounds like Lars farting on a snare drum.)
Swap Hardwired and Death Magnetic and your list is identical to mine! High-five, bro!
Nice list honestly though I don't think And Justice is underrated at all, infact it's often cited as a favourite by fans and actually alot of musicians, I meen also one is kinda one of there biggest hits in there whole catalogue
You make me want to relisten to Justice for All, see if I can find what I missed the first times I listened to it!
Ride The Lightning is my favorite Metallica album. I wore out the cassette back in the 80s and I still crank up the CD to this day.
How you felt about Escape is exactly how I felt about Fight Fire With Fire. I usually just skip it, Ride the Lightning is a fine place to start for me, also considering it's the title track. FfWf just never grabbed me
Can I use the birthday decorations as happy bday to myself? (Its tomorrow but close enough)
Absolutely you can! Happy birthday dude!
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Thanks man!
I've been going through a Metallica phase because quarantine has me going back to all the stuff that made me first fall in love with metal, so I've listened to all these recently. This might be a spicy list for some, but it's genuinely how I feel right now in my life in the year 2020:
1. Ride the Lightning
2. Master of Puppets
3. The Black Album
4. Kill 'Em All
5. Load
6. ...And Justice for All
7. Death Magnetic
8. ReLoad
9. St. Anger
10. Hardwired... to Self Destruct
I've always loved Escape, so given that, there's no reason RtL wouldn't be #1 for me.
Probably had something to do with why the drum sound on both is so good!)
I definitely agree that taking half of Load and adding two or three songs from ReLoad would have resulted in a classic album.
1. Master of Puppets
2. Ride the Lightning (if only cause of Escape)
3. And Justice for All (even with the bass issue)
4. Kill Em All
5. The Black Album
6. Everything else lmao
The first 5 albums are the only ones I listen to and the only ones anyone new to Metallica should listen to. Everything else from Load to now I couldn't give less of a shit for aside from some of Garage Inc and S&M (No Leaf Clover is pretty good). While I'm at it, happy birthday to Moose!
I've just listened to the first 5 albums, so I'll just rank them and talk about some points.
1- Ride The Lightning
2- Kill 'em All
3- ...And Justice For All
4- Master Of Puppets
5- The Black Album
1* Dude... this is BY FAR the best Metallica Album in my opinion.
Nice video man
10. Load
9. Reload
8. St Anger
7. Hardwired to Self Destruct
6. Death Magnetic
5. Kill Em All
4. Black Album
3. Ride the Lighting
2. Master of Puppets
1. And Justice For All
Black Album kicks ass, finally we agree on something. I geel we can bond over this 🤘
Load is an album I'll always have a soft spot for.
Honestly, same. Lady Gaga is wildly diverse as an artist, her venture into metal is inevitable, why not partner up with Metallica?
I tried listening to lulu 2 times. I just couldnt.
You friggin shocked me with Lulu. I will give it a minus 1 out of 5.
You actually made me want to listen to lulu again! I am going to give it another listen. Geeee you have a point there. Takes guts to make such an album.
Black Album still has the best production I’ve ever heard in my life.
A bit sad that you didn't include the Garage Days albums in this...
Load: Shit. ReLoad: ReShit. St. Anger: You flush it out.
Would Jason bass on justice even really make a difference overall ? Better or worse? The funnest Metallica fans are the ones from 1983-1986 who say they are hardcore lol
I pretty much agree with what you have to say, you should've looked at Helping Hands that acoustic gig they did!
Load was released in 1996, not 1994, but that aside great video.
I was on board with you until Lulu..but ok I respect the argument. Masters of Puppets is my nr. 1 for sure. It would be really cool to talk about Nuclear Assault albums if that wasn't covered before.
Very glad to hear you dig Lulu.
We are a minority for sure.
LULU GANG, RIIISE UP
Love your video. I actually love garage inc. Alot. Was my first Metallica album.
Here are my thoughts on each one (out of 10):
Kill 'Em All: 8/10.
Lulu is great!
And if you ever wondered what Metallica woudl sound like had Les Claypool joined the band -- check it out: ua-cam.com/video/7CNp7qDh4iE/v-deo.html
every albums show epicness. load reload was something
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed! \m/

Hey! I like Escape! The lyrics are awesome! It is surely (and don't call me Shirley!) mitigated by Fight Fire With Fire alone!
Thank you. I don't care if I hate every other opinion I ever hear from you.
It only matters if it sounds good. Idgaf about 'sellout' or whatever. Fuck that shit.
The biggest injustice of all was that Ride the Lightning the song was not on Guitar hero Metallica.
Fuuuuuck I totally wanna play Guitar Hero now...
@@themetalmeltdownofficial you could get Clone hero. It’s for Pc and they got literally any song you want.

I actually am really weird with my Metallica...
If I ranked their albums, I'd put 'em like this:
Kill 'Em All: 4.5/5 - pure, unapologetic thrash metal and what kickstarted an underground genre.
Ride The Lightning: 5/5 - I really love this throughout, my personal favorite album of their's, yes even Escape
Master of Puppets: 5/5 - while not as emotionally attached to this, I still love it throughout, it's fucking killer and Disposable Heroes is a masterpiece
...And Justice For All: 4.5/5 - BASS...
All killer
Hardwired To Self-Destruct: 3.5/5 - I cannot listen to this one all the way through, the first half is great, the latter half though, snoozefest.
I actually love 'whiskey in the jar', its like Metallica's answer to the Beatles 'rocky raccoon'.
How old were you in 1984?
My list would go something like this (be warned, there are some controversial rankings):
1: Master of Puppets.

5. Garage Inc.
6. Death Magnetic
7. Hardwired... To Self Destruct
8. Load

11. Lulu
no justice
You forgot The $5.98 E.P. - Garage Days Re-Revisited. Some of their best stuff.
Ya got 666 views! WHICH YOU CAN MAKE A SLAYER RANKING :D
Solid logic.
Ride The Lightning is the best
4:15 Ride The Lightning
I didnt get into Metallica until the Through the Never movie dropped (was working at an Imax theater at the time). And funny enough I decided i'd listen to St Anger first, since obviously the hate it gets is all ringing so even i heard of the controversy. But honestly
I kind of like it?
I do eventually need to give Lulu a chance, but every time ive tried I cant get past the spoken word delivery in the first song.
I’m not a big fan of anything after the black album , haven’t heard lulu tho
Ride the lightning is my favorite ,
Fight fire with fire is my favorite Metallica song
Metallica to me is the one band that I'll mostly eat up anything they make. (Besides reload and st.anger, but even then, they have their moments for me)
1. .....And Justice For All
2. Ride The Lightning
3. Master of Puppets
4. Black Album
5. Kill Em' All
6. Load
7. Death Magnetic
8. Hardwired.......To Self-Destruct
9. Reload
10. St.Anger
Also, consider doing a Pantera disco review?
@@Pokemonvspuddin101 I have not, but its a damn good idea for the future, especially with their 40th anniversary coming up next year... hmmm...
@@themetalmeltdownofficial yay :3
TLDR: Every popular take on every Metallica album.
Kill em all 4.5/5
Ride the lightning 5/5
Master of puppets 4.5/5
…and justice for all 5/5
Metallica(black album) 4/5
Load 4/5
Reload 2/5
St. Anger 1/5
Death Magnetic 3.5/5
Hardwired to self destruct 3/5
Am I the only one who knows Whiskey in the Jar is a Thin Lizzy cover?
1. ...And Justice for All(10/10) my favourite album of all time
2. Master of Puppets(10/10) musically it's objectively better than Justice, but i still like it less
3. Black Album(9.5/10) hot take - The God that Failed has the best Metallica solo
4. Ride the Lightning(9.5/10) i am not the biggest fan of Escape
5. 72 Seasons(8.5/10) the title track, Room of Mirrors and Inamorata are better than some of songs on Justice but WHY DID THIS ALBUM HAD TO BE THIS LONG?
6. Kill'em All(8/10) great album but it kinda sounds the same(except Anesthesia of course)
7. Death Magnetic(8/10) pretty much the same as KEA but longer(although Unforgiven III is my favourite Unforgiven)
8. Hardwired to Self-Destruct (7.5/10) i like most of the songs, but it has too much fillers(and it's too long)
9. Load & ReLoad(6/10) good albums, but fillers are really annoying me
10. Lulu(3/10) it's so bad that it actually somehow becomes good
11. St. Anger(1/10) good to listen to when you're pissed off
Kill Em All 4/5
Ride The Lightning 4.5/5
Master of Puppets 5/5
And Justice For All 4/5
Black album 4/5
Load 3/5
Reload 3/5
St Anger 1/5
Death Magnetic 3.5/5
Hardwired 3.5/5
I know that a lot of people don’t like Load and Reload but I like those albums. Those 2 albums have some awesome hidden gems. The biggest problems with those albums is that they have some bad songs and filler. If you take out the bad songs, the albums would be better.
That Whyskey in a Jar rant hurt me, not because I care for the Metallica version, but because I LOVE Thin Lizzy
If it helps, I love me some Thin Lizzy. Just can't get behind James howling out WISKAAAY IN THE JAWR-O'.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Man, james sounded so much better when he didn't know how to sing...
10,000% correct
Yeah as someone who does consider himself a Thin Lizzy fan that Whiskey in the Jar cover outright pisses me off still. It does not sound good, James Vocals I find to be really annoying on that track. Garage Inc is so hit or miss with their covers.
@@gui4816 lol true
I’ve listened to St. Anger a lot, and I still disagree, but I respect your opinion.
The art of st.anger is very cool.
The rest is as follows:
10) St Anger (some cool ideas but I can never make it through to them just cause of that fucking snare, and too many awful songs in between the halfway decent bits!)
9) Reload (I love The Memory Remains, but other than Fuel I could not tell you what else was on there even if I had a gun to my head 🤣)
8) Load (eh, like you said some parts are ok some are really bad)
7) Death Magnetic (I actually really like this album, reason why I put it below Hardwired is simply production. I get a headache every time I listen to it, which is a shame cause I actually dig the songs quite a lot. Apart from The Unforgiven 3. I think that's a terrible song lol!)
6) Hardwired (Spit Out the Bone in my opinion is the greatest song they have done since maybe And Justice For All!)
5) Black Album
4) Kill Em All
3) Ride The Lightning
2) Master of Puppets
1) ...and Justice for All (lack of bass aside, I fucking love how unbelievably tight it sounds, and the intricacy of the playing. Never mind the songs are just so crushing!)
Great video man 🤘🤘
We all know the first four albums are quite good.
Sorry I mean you gave obituary mostly 4 outta 5.
25:41 what were you drinking?
super tiny ass bottle of rum
I heard that rum is a popular drink in the Maritime provinces as well as in Newfoundland. Are you from there? BTW, I'm from Quebec.
Family is from Newfoundland but I've lived in Toronto all my life.
Also: what up fellow Canadian.
I'm new into metal music. I listened to every Metallica album and plan to listen to other metal bands. I'll probably listen to Megadeth next since Dave Mustaine was one of the founding members of Metallica but then founded his own band Megadeth.
I disagree, and I've heard it plenty. St. Anger is not even their worst record. That award goes to Reload.
Load, Reload and St Anger are about the same weak level.
the black album is a masterpiece 🤘🤘
I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that hates St. Anger
Escape is only on Ride because the record company wanted it and Metallica wrote it in 24 hours
I think any "success" that they experienced after the Black album came from the fact that the state of metal after the 80's became so piss-poor at least in the US that the bar fell pretty low at that point. Metallica takes on so many new fans who are discovering them with every release so you have to take into account the metal climate at the time.
Hilarious ^^ Thx for so much fun,
Metallica albums ranked IMO:
1. Ride the Lightning
2. Master of Puppets
3. Kill Em All
4. And Justice for All
5. The Black Album
6. Hardwired... to Self Destruct
7. Death Magnetic
8. Reload
9. Load
10. St. Anger
If I were to compare Metallica albums to Batman movies, it would go something like this:
Batman (1989): Master Of Puppets
Batman Returns: And Justice For All
Batman Forever: Load
Batman And Robin: Reload
I dunno man, Batman Forever & Batman And Robin are far more interesting than Load & ReLoad lol
Cool shirt. Robocop. Remastered lol.
I’ve been loving to marathon your work.
That being said, your take on S&M is one of your worst ones.
All love tho, it’s a 5/5 hands down
personally the list was over after justice, i never listen to anything made after 1988. the album with the covers garage days has some good songs too but like i said its covers
The first three albums are undisputed and then Metallica started to kind of change.
Load is fine. But ReLoad flippin ROCKSS!!!
While Metallica was recording St. Anger, they did something really bad: They recorded a song with rapper Ja Rule. Oh dear God why?
...is it weird that I kind of wanna hear that?
