As an educator of 33 years I can say all of your videos are well done and very informative. I second the request for a video on building a street/strip TH400. I am about to rebuild my first 400 for my big block chevelle making about 600hp/600tq, running 3:42-1 12 body. It's afull interior, full body heavy car. Plan on running slicks at the track.
Thanks Shawn. I always enjoy your vids. I am currently cleaning and inspecting my 400 case before rebuld, and your vids help me alot. I thank you for all the infro you provide. Have a great day from Ontario Canada
I have to thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I am about to assemble a race transmission myself. It will be my fist attempt ever to build a th400. Almost everything is aftermarket including the case. It will have to support between 1200 to 2000 hp. Watching your videos has made me much more familiar with the parts and how they all work and go together. With the knowledge you have given us. And the information i found VIA internet from companies like Sonnax, CK performance, Coan. Books ATSG , I now feel confident in my abilities to build this myself. I have spent months researching parts as well Information to do this. You have taken a great deal of the mystery out of how to assemble and work on the th400 transmission for myself as well as many others I am sure. Thank You.
Thanks for making these videos. Bought a TH400 from PTC and I now better understand what I need to make it work. Maybe a video on manual valve body shifter setup would be good.
Nice informative video. The only thing I would add is what the small and large shafts on the lower unit are doing in each gear. I believe they are turning opposite directions when in 1st gear. One shaft stops spinning in 2nd gear. And both shafts turn the same direction in 3rd gear. Great work on the videos
Thanks again, Shawn. Once I learned the power flow, everything clicked. Besides improving hard parts, my "shift kits included removing every other spring in clutch packs, grinding lands on valves, shimming the pressure regulator, drilling and soldering holes in the spacer plate and so on. My own trans went in a vega with 650 hp SBC with 3 nitrous systems totaling about 800 HP which i used all at once on occasion and the trans never broke. The motor broke first (too many passes on aluminum rods). But that was 30 years ago. Now i want to go manual valve body. I learned quite a bit, thank you, but Im wondering if I have to begin with a stock valve body/spacer plate?
Hey boss! Well done on this video, I love it! We have a TH400 trans, which is not going into park and is running very slow on reverse (seems like it is on quarter power on reverse), all other gears are fine! Transmission shifter from the outside of the gearbox seems to be shifting properly, what would you check next?
Hi I enjoy watching your videos I would like to know where you can purchase some of the tools you use to rebuild the transmissions like seal protectors and so fourth thanks
Hey, great video. I see you are very knowledgeable about this transmission. I have a G30 86 with a thm400 and I wanted to ask you a question. It did go forward at one point however now when I put into drive it doesn’t move. It will go reverse but not forward unless I put in neutral and I press the gas, while pressing the gas, ill shift into drive and if I’m lucky it will catch and drag itself forward. Like if the emergency brake was on. Then it will drive again. Not to long after driving though the cab fills with smoke. Like steam. I don’t drive right now but wonder if you heard of this issue before and maybe know the solution. I’d really appreciate any insight you have. Thank you.
trying to figure out why the thrust washer in the center support went bad, drove fine, shift OK, just thought I would replace a leaking pan gasket and found a ton of brass )-:
Hey Shawn really like your videos👍 How do you get 1st gear to stop shifting out on its own on the T-400, mine shifts out on its own @ between 4500 and 4800 with my 355. Thanks, keep on the videos 💪
I have been watching your vidios and a subscriber, I'm at 1100WHP, and manual reverse valve body, but 1st and second both feel like 1st gear, trans literally has 30 miles on it , and 2 wot pulls on the brake. And it's not seeming to shift right
I always enjoy stopping by Mountains Garage!
Good stuff as usual Shawn! Thanks for taking time to talk to all of us. I certainly appreciate it!
Thanks!

Nice project!
Ah. Trimmed up the ol' scruff!!!
Appreciate you and your videos, and your style, Shawn.
It was overdue! Thanks for tuning in!
Very good explanation!
Greeting from the V8Lounge in germany!

Great video as always. Viewer Suggestion - TH400 performance mods for street and towing.
Good Suggestion, Thanks!
absolute weapon of a video Shawn ! quick n simple version well explained, thank you :)

Thanks for another very informative video...
Thanks

Good explanation on the basics
Very good thank you. Sent to a mate.
Good info getting braver

You can make your own manual valve body. 30 years ago leaving out springs was a thing, flashback!

Thanks Shawn, very helpful video again.
At 9:19 you spin the intermediate sprag. Is this squeaking noise ok or revealed it a defective part?
The squeaky sprag is the less desirable roller type.
Thanks for watching!
I love it.
Another interesting video
Thanks!

The part numbers are in the back of the ASTG Manual. I found mine on eBay.
Thanks for watching!!

Hey Shawn I was wondering if you could do a video on th400 oem old school valve body mods. Thanks
That is coming, great idea Thanks!
So, if a torque converter can multiply torque, wouldn't it kinda be another final drive ratio as it affects all gears?
When replacing the older TH400 o-ring seal on dipstick, to get it “perfect” is it best to drain the fluid?
@@kg6itc Imhave done many with a drain pan to catch the fluid. If you want to verify the full mark then remove the pan.

That is pretty rare. Most of those are even plastic.
Hey Shawn really like your videos👍
How do you get 1st gear to stop shifting out on its own on the T-400, mine shifts out on its own @ between 4500 and 4800 with my 355.
Thanks, keep on the videos 💪
The instructions are online, places like crankshaftcoalition.com can walk you through it, pretty simple.

@@maniacS550 That is a bummer! Check the pressure in all ranges then probably have to go back in and see what failed.
What causes reverse go out it still works at a idle
Probably the direct clutches burned up, just a guess.
Will low transmission fluid cause the th400 not to go into to any gears
Yes it will
Have a 350 with the 400 every time I put into gear it turns off y
great video, you should have been a teacher.
Thanks!
