This is something I didn't expect to make, but I felt compelled to. Ring Racers is a lot of fun, and this video compiles my thoughts into one package. This review assumes you're a bit familar with Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart and Ring Racers already. - Розваги
For those asking for the Peppino addon in this video, this was a port done by myself. Once the section on the message board becomes available, I will be uploading the addon there as an unofficial port as laid out by the new guidelines.
but i ALSO made a port... (it also fixes the weird slightly darker white so yeah)
(i also asked mcpig if i could post it when i can and he said i could so yknow)
@@AlmondTheGuy The guidelines allow multiple unofficial ports, so it's not like you both can't upload.
Were you using the skin locally or was it server-side? dunno if rr supports local skins yet..
It looks like the forums are now available!!
@@VGMaster1 and my peppino port is already up lmao
12:00 The Rival AI literally does cheat. They get a double drafting and ring speed boost on top of frantic items PLUS the perfect steering that every bot gets
The best part is that rivals sometimes just clip through geometry its really funny
I think they fixed it a bit so hopefully it will get done soon so it's fair
15:55 Thank god someone said it, the challenges that are locked behind conditions in grand prix only annoy me to no end
I can sort of understand the reasoning for regular race achievements, because if you could do those in match race you could just set it to one CPU on the lowest level to trivialize it. But the prison level challenges being locked to GP makes no sense because there's a dedicated time trial mode for them. It's one of those things that just feels like the game not respecting your time, like you said
I generally agree, though the "destroy every prison egg" challenges would probably need to be adjusted if that were done, since those would be absolutely trivial in time attack. At least one challenge was adjusted in this direction already in 2.2, though - "beat Death Egg's Eye in 1:04" now has a secondary condition where you can instead get a Gold on the stage in time attack to unlock it instead, which was much appreciated and made me actually want to do the challenge instead of keying it.
I played srb2k a few months back, but playing ring racers last week in a VC, it was like night and day. I seriously hope the modding community reaches the same highs srb2k had as there really isn’t anything that comes to the same panicle of quality in the free kart racing market currently.
I KNEW IT WAS YOU!!! YOU **WERE** THAT PINK CAROL IN MY LOBBY! "i'M mOrE oF aN aNtOnBlAsT gUy mYsElF" YOU DIDNT FOOL ME CRAY!!!
:3
It kind of feels like the game was made with already skilled players in mind. There are a lot of mechanics made to keep good players in check, but they just punch down on anyone who isn't completely dominating. Lives are either too numerous or nowhere near enough depending on how good you are. When I first started, the few they gave you were nowhere near enough, and now, outside of emerald chases (which I'd argue shouldn't have limited lives to begin with), I only use 1 or 2 per cup, if any at all. Insta-whip using rings, ring debt in general, and to a certain extent, the rival AI, all (mostly) work when you've got the game under your belt, but feel like shit before you get to that point. I can't help but wonder if the experience would be better if all of this was toned down or even removed for the first 7 cups to let players learn how the game feels before having to deal with them.
It's baffling that they made items appear in the roulette based on distance to 1st place, but didn't make the rival bonuses scale based on distance to the player. Sure, they should have an advantage to get past the other AI, but that should disappear if they're next to or ahead of the player. It doesn't technically matter because you can still get the emerald without being in 1st place, but it really impacts the feel of the game when you have to say "Yeah, I'm fine with the AI knocking me down to 2/3/4th because they had better stats/items," every other race.
Random things being fixed in place, like rival bonuses, is an issue that appears in a few places. Challenges being locked to Grand Prix when they have no reason for it is one. Shortcut gates are another. Yeah, they can be worth holding onto a sneaker for if they have some kind of bonus that makes up for not being able to use rings, but some of them are just basic shortcuts across the grass. That doesn't apply to all of them, but it adds to the feeling that there was a better way to integrate shortcuts than a brightly colored speed gate.
Totally with you on that front, the game is best if you already have experience with srb2kart. Going into Ring Racers I was already very familiar with srb2kart so the mental load by everything new was not as huge as it was for others. I do wish the entry for new players would've been made better. However, I feel with the maximalist approach that Kart Krew wanted to go for, this would've been just not feasible. That this game is a lot for new players is sadly an unavoidable hurlde.
Funny how I am writing this comment right now, a new patch came out reducing the overall difficulty of this game, haha.
As a single player user, i agree about the ai rubberbanding being too much. That's kinda the main issue with the game: everything being overtuned. Items should not being blasting you across the stage everytime you get hit and the tumble can be very ridiculous at times. This and slopes being dumb can ruin entire grand prix for me.
Latest patch (came out today) nerfs rubberbanding and slopes, just fyi.
Mario kart 9 looks sick rn
holy shit it’s gregoriah
They released an update today and now Grand Prix isn't that vicious anymore, nice!
Yeah, I do plan on making up a follow up video of the new changes. I do want to play it first myself however, to see how it feels now to play.
Its awesome to hear that you had so much fun with the game- I had been playing it *every* day since the day it launched so I do feel like I need to take a pause or try some other stuff for variety sake [like, over 24hours logged and 467 wins between online and Grand Prix], let me tell you that the first week of playing it was an absolute fever dream after five years of waiting for its release.
I do look forward that 2.2 addresses the Grand Prix AI rubberbanding too, since while I have enjoyed it in many times, I can't lie that in some occasions it had me like a sailor mouth [Like in Turquoise Hill, which you played in the footage, and *Chemical Facility* in particular with how tight it feels and yet AI just zips away in first place and took me two continues to be able to catch up].
[SPOILER WARNING FOR RR]
If you want to know two funny unlocks that I got through Chao Keys by accident that I don't know if I would try to get legit because of how I've already spent a lot of time in races and haven't unlocked all the second page cups yet [which at least you can do with Hard GP clears] , would have to be Mecha Sonic and the Super Emerald follower. If you know what the conditions on those are, you know why its funny to find those by accident. ESPECIALLY the Super Emerald, since I got that on my FIRST DAY after testing my first Chao Key.
I do think that if I don't end up getting the patience to practice and then grind Super Emerald runs, I might use the code for all tracks after unlocking the second page cups and the super secret special map [I already got Test Track and Hidden Palace], which does feel like kind of a shame, but at least 2.1 included those passwords for people that wanted to work around those unlocks (or in your case, wanting to have all colors on without spray can hunting) as 2.0 didn't have them to keep the secrets fresh...but somehow some people, perhaps digging into the code, had found a few passwords. For the amount of frustration a few were having from having to unlock content in the first place (mainly people coming from Kart loading everything up from the get go in most if not all modded servers), at least they had that as an optional choice while players that wanted to unlock their stuff still can do so.
And props for going all the way to unlock almost all yourself just to be able to give your thoughts on that specific part of the package.
At the end of the day though, I feel/hope that 2.2 is going to be THE update to win over some of the hestitating players, and for those that already had been won over, make Grand Prix a fully enjoyable experience as well as likely adjust some maps regarding common complaints [like Death Egg's laps].
It had been kind of terrible the extremely mixed reception that some players gave [and by extreme, I mean *agressively harsh*- especially from some Kart players thrown off by the new handling], but thankfully it has been clearing up recently and most of the noticeable oddities should be more than noted. But I still wouldn't change how my initial experiences with the game: Working around the tutorial, realizing that I was racing bots in Robotnik Coaster, the amount of stuff and visual polish, the first special stage, and hours of online racing that had me feel like the wait had been damn worth it.
...In a nutshell, always great to see people enjoying Ring Racers :)
I WAS SO DESPERATE FOR A REVIEW YES MORE CONTENT!!!!
The rubber banding DEFINITELY needs to be fixed, in my opinion, even the colors situation is tolerable when you don't have a Rival big the cat who can basically just catch up to you at literally the most inconvenient times possible to jostle you around however the game wants.
Before anybody says anything about the 2.1 patch nerfing the rubberbanding, from what I can tell it only nerfed it slightly bcus the cpus can still play unfair at times
Ive also had moments where ai will pull infront of me and then deploy a bumper in my face. I alt f4'ed so fast
This game has quickly become my favorite kart racer and I'm not even exaggerating... Also kinda unrelated but where did you get the Peppino mod? I know that was in SRB2Kart but I didn't know it was ported over already :o
did you know you can play as the ring racer? race as a ring?
In concerns of the rubberbanding, I can sometimes go faster than them in the right situations. I think its perfect as I am a really skillful player, plus they still will catch even me sometimes so the game isn't boring for my level.
Well yea but they screw over anyone who isn’t on your level or above.
That’s the problem
@@RaiginAnimator Agreed. I would rather keep the game accessible, but I wanted to show my perspective. Maybe should have clarified that I wouldn't mind more CPU patches if the game was more accessible while still being a challenge.
@@benji-menji Thanks
I was guessing that you might be an example of chao keys feeling disingenuous even if they attempted to fix any challenges you can't bother doing. Surprisingly, you seem to want more chao keys or make big unlocks cheaper.
For me the challenge system is perfect as I know I don't have to do them all and I start out with my favorite color.
For everyone else, the unlock system is nearly perfect. All it needs is a challenge sorting system, maybe changing the cost of large unlocks, and maybe toning down of Grand Prix challenges and the unlock system is perfect. There could also be a pick your favorite character thing like with the sprays but I personally don't think it's required. You can debate that one if you wish though.
Where did you find that peppino mod? I thought normal srb2k add-ons didnt work on ring racers
that is true. I've ported it over with new lookback sprites, I plan on putting it on the MB once the section is available.
You have a link to where I can get the Peppino add on?
The world was prepared for the peppino death stare.
I dont like how drifting has changed between the 2 games but thats my only real big complaint outside of the AI
The only 2 things im not big on is how strong the AI even on normal even post nerf and a me issue is the colors as different sprites since my frames drops from 60fps to 14fps with only 33 colors unlocked when selecting a character
i dont got a strong-ish pc but it wasnt an issue in srb2k so hope they add a fix for it
How did you get Peppino Addon for DRRR?
does anyone have a link to the peppino mod?
mannn, the only thing i'm focusing right now is to one day get a beefy laptop so i can finally give these games a try
(.•° ^ °•.)
In my opinion the worst track is Chemical Facility Zone and was in vanilla srb2k in the hell maps (honestly idk why this track is returned and not Ancient Tomb).
Where can I find that Peppino mod?
So, just to get this out of the way, would you say both this game and it's predecessor are like the Super Smash Bros. Melee of Kart Racers?
Because, as a Casual Gamer, I've been eyeballing this game for a while, and the general consensus seems...divisive, to put it lightly.
It's more like a Monster Hunter game: you hate the initial bullsh!t the game throws at you, but once you get the hang of it, you start to enjoy overcoming the bullsh!t.
You should spend rings more often while drifting, it really hels paintain your momentum, do tight drifts to charge the boost fast while still going so fast that you don't ram into the inner wall.
How do I unlock these characters?
and that peppino mod?
how do i use character mods?
Link of peppino pls
im thinking: where is the peppino mod?
HOW DID YA PORT PEPPINO?!
is this peppino
Are there still stuff blocked by a password or is it gone and now everything is fine?
there's still a password system but its mostly for unlocks
@@zedc6072 Thank god
The game comes with a TXT full of passwords for almost all unlocks, so if you just want an almost 100% save file, you can get it no issue.
Some time when i was really close into the line,a CPU bumped me,as i got a fault and i almost lost.
(I was Amy btw)
I installed a broken mod and my game said "F**k you, here's a snowman."
5:31 holy shit its my marios dad wad
The only way they could make this game better is if they added a F-Zero 99 battle royale mode into it.
Erm what the sigma
dr bad breakfast's onion ring racers solos
where'da get the pizza tower mods?!
Did you get all these 746 medals 🗿
this game is a fun car crash
e-e-rm... h-how do i get Peppino....
Right before 2.2 dropped. Unfortunate timing. :P
Hehe, I suppose that's the curse I'm willing to pay for taking my time. Definitely will do an update video sometime later after I've gotten a chance to play v2.2
funny vid lmao it is hella fun and the BS AI is kinda to be expected
I'm glad people are for once having fun with this game. the 5 year wait for this game is 100% worth it.
the Singleplayer content is what gave me interest in this. especially when I saw that it got confirmed when it was still called SRB2Kart V2 back in 2019-20.
the game is perfect in every way, besides the stupid rival system and Death Egg.
speaking of Singleplayer content. the Super Emerald stages SUCK, Especially the 6th and 7th stages. (as of right now... the 7th one is kicking my ass)
I feel that the emerald stages are to test your skills with every mechanic you've learned so far. And that's not particularly a bad thing. but sometimes. the stages feel cluttered sometimes. making it unplayable in some cases.
Racing against the rivals in GP makes it feel more luck based... No racing game should be luck based.
other than that. I hope KKD fixes these problems in 2.2. (ESPECIALLY THE RIVALS)
this game made me rage that i deleted it.
@3:40 whos the character with the thicc ass lol
Go with talking points going into a video because you repeated a lot of your statements and it took 3 min to let us know anything about this game.
Yeah, I've noticed it myself. I'll keep this in mind for the future. Iwant to practice my ad-hoc speaking but it isn't quite there yet.
I love the ideas, personality and presentation of the game, but it's so sad the gameplay ended up like that 😭😭😭
Fuck the ai in this game. Thay are way to annoying
