Solo Tarp Camp in a Rainstorm - Wild Caught Venison

- Wet wet wet, no not the 80's band but the weather on this trip, it poured rain from the minute I got to my camp and didn't stop turning into a pretty windy rainstorm! A nice hot bowl of Venison Chili to warm my insides and watching two otters on the hunt made up for it though

Get a P38 (US Military) can opener. Small, lightweight, and works like a charm!
Thanks for still showing the mishaps. I don’t wish them on anyone but it shows how authentic you are. I appreciate that!
Thanks Todd! I'm going to take a look into these little things because a couple of people mentioned them, I'm sure I can grab some online somewhere
Got mine from Amazon. Lost mine from my dad's C-rats a long time ago
P-51 can opener is even better, can get them on Amazon. They are a bit bigger than the 38, saves a bit of wear on your thumb when you use it.
instablaster.
Is there anything more relaxing than the sound of a gentle rain as you lie perfectly dry?
That chili bowl looked great!
The only thing I would trade it for would be watching some big fat snow flakes come down and hearing the woods go deathly quiet as it does
"watching some big fat snow flakes come down and hearing the woods go deathly quiet as it does"
Oh yeah, keep going I'm almost finished...
But seriously, that's my absolute favorite environment to be in.
I really enjoy this content. It is so relaxing to observe and take in. Many thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it Beau! Cheers mate
Howdy Rob, Just to let you know that I appreciate your honesty as well as your sense of humor. Less is more my friend.
I often see videos of people having a perfect campout. My campouts are usually a lot more like this. Glad to see you persevered and made the best of it. I enjoyed seeing how you set up the plow point. I've always had a problem being too close to the tree. Thanks for sharing :)
Exactly Darius! They hardly ever go to plan, at least for me anyway but that's why I like to try and capture all the different aspects of camping and not just the really pretty moments but the grittier part of it too
Just found this channel and I love it. The tarp blowing away was money!!
haha thanks mate! The tarp blowing away was pretty funny lol
I'm sorry but I couldn't help laughing out loud when you were sitting there talking and your tarp just disappeared. :-) I love the videos and look forward to every one. Take care.
haha I don't blame you for laughing Jennifer it was pretty comical as I'm talking about it lol! Thank you, you too!
Nice set up, looks comfy. I always had good luck fishing in a gentle rain like that. Subs keep coming up, congrats!
Thanks Reginald 👍 I've had good luck fishing when it's overcast before as well I should have brought a rod or some line with me
@Reginald Workman What I was thinking. Sounds like a well-behaved cold ass rain to me. So you're fishing and a little cool and hungry and a little rivulet of water runs down your back to your nethers. Lol. I was with you but then the venison and a small fire got my attention. Peace to all of you and thanks for the share.
Just found your channel a week ago. Every video gets a little better. Just keep being yourself and you will go far on you tube
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Came across your channel - now I am hooked - great video and content - I love this kind of stuff....stay safe and warm.....Dave Wisconsin
Welcome aboard Dave! Glad you liked the video and so happy you found the channel, you too buddy!
Dude, after watching several of your videos, I'm starting to think you like crappy weather camping best!!! Kidding, of course. The sound of rain is a comfort; the misery of it is fortifying! Cheers!
You got that right Deborah! Haha it definitely is fortifying for sure, you learn much more in the rain than clear skies that's for sure
Hi Rob! Really enjoyed this video; love the sound of rain on a tarp. That chili bowl had my mouth watering, I'm sure it tasted great! Looking forward to your next adventure. Until then, stay safe! 👍
Hi Eric! Me too! It's quite relaxing and reassuring in a lot of ways. The Chili was great it needed a little hot sauce and a few more fixings but on a day like that I have no complaints at all! You too buddy!
I could almost smell that chili... bet it was good! Love the sound of rain..
It was Linda! Perfect for a cold rainy day
Thanks, real relaxing to watch after a stressful day at work.
Beautiful scenery...thing is you get days like that when the rain never stops...doesn't stop you enjoying it...being cozy inside whilst weather not great..love it...
Exactly Ray! All I would have been doing otherwise is watching the rain out of my window looking at the same four walls I always do, better to be out in nature
Hi again Rob...great to see you back!....The video is fun to watch!... The scenery & your video angles are very good!....Tks for hanging in there even with the less than perfect conditions!...Take care my friend!
Hi Thomas! Thanks for coming back to check out the videos, I think the new camera helped, I still have to figure out the settings more but so far I like it
I will take a day of rain anytime! Thanks for taking us along! ❤️❤️
Me too Jody! Thanks for coming
Hahah loved the look on your face when the pegs gave in. Great video, nice seeing you letting more and more of your goody side out!
Haha yeah I was in pretty good spirits on this trip despite all the mishaps, guess it was the good food and taking some time to relax a little
@@BrooksandBirches yeah, you can take a lot more adversity with a good mindset, and a full belly.
Thank you for sharing these excellent videos. Looking forward to the next one
Would you like to try a colorful fire next time?
Really enjoy your content , I love how you show the gd the bad and the ugly
Thanks Lee! I think people appreciate it when you show all sides to camping and not just the really easy bits lol
@@BrooksandBirches they certainly do pal, if you have any knowledge on how to tie proper knots that would be an awesome video, my 🪢 are aweful 😅
Bambi didint get away, mmmmm chilli thanx bambi, enjoyed another adventure thanx for taking me along always looking forward to seeing more.🍖😐👍⛺
Glad you enjoyed it Dave! It's all part of the process to becoming more self sufficient that's all
This is the most real video I've seen of a camping experience.
Thank you for sharing.
Wow, thank you Jordan!
Something about the outdoor that just stimulates our brain, that natural high 👍🏿👍🏿
Thanks Again For Sharing Your Knowledge And Life Skills Here On UA-cam.
My pleasure! Thanks for taking the time to check them out
Great video. Rain is no issue when you have the right gear with you 👍🏻
Very true! Thanks mate
I lol'd at the end when the wind blew the tarp and you referenced Braveheart lol bout blew coffee out my nose!
Haha my stepson came in as I was editing that part and I think he about did the same LeAnn lol
Awesome photography so beautiful lovie. I think you take the rain along love. Loved the video Robert keep up the good work.
Thanks Desiree! I think your right because we had a pretty dry summer and I kept saying it didn't rain that much so it's making up for it now
Off day... You the Man ! Raw, rainy weather & no camp fire & you survived 👌
Thanks Stephen! Some days you off days man it happens but like you said I survived!
The worse things get, the better you get at dealing with it!
Great video!
Thanks Scott! Learning as I go I guess
I live in small village central mexico..we have a lot problems in town like drugs...kills..n ur video I find peace and calm..I wish i can come to u and stay there for ever...😍
I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems where you live. I hope some day you will be able to get to places like this. I wish you all the best my friend. Take care!
Another great solo camp Robert, now winter is around the corner, looking foreword to some "Winter Storm" excursions from you, CHEERZ !!
Thanks Scott! Me too buddy, rain is whatever but I like the snow! Makes everything look nice and bright again! CHEERZ!!
Hey Rob! Just got my hat today. Great quality. I love it
That's awesome Andrew!! I hope you like it, glad the shipping was fairly quick too!
I was hoping you would close the tarp in for warmth. Really enjoying this video, here I am laughing at the rain love you doing great. What fun my grandkids love running around in the rain.
Thanks Desiree! Yeah I'm glad I closed it in because otherwise the wind would have been whipping right through there! Bless them and their youthful exuberance!
Soon as you pulled out the woodford, I sub’d. Great content man.
for some reason raining videos are my favorites..... I like watching in my bed with dark room.... halfway im sleep.🤭
hello Robert it's always nice to see you and see your solo tarp camping and this time in a rainstorm wow i bet it was sorta hard to stay dry out there even thow you had a tarp over you and wow that chili you made and headed up with the venison you caught wow it did look so yummy i bet you really enjoyed that alot and even in a bowl bun i bet that made even more good as well i wanna wish you congrats again on your first venison /buck kill that was awesome and i noticed the nice whiskey you had that must of tasted good to in the beginning of your video i noticed i think they where 2 beavers in the pond/small lake that was cool to see as well and the end of this video wow your hole tarp blew over the wind must of picked up it was like when it blew over it made it so bright and i love that you got a new camera i hope it does everything you wanted to do i could see you very very clear with the new camera so it really videos great so thankyou very much Robert for this video i enjoyed it alot as i always do so please take care and please stay safe out there in the forest/woods and everywhere you go from your canadain friend Randy from ontario, canada p.s i hope you did end up getting soaked badly after you filmed this video .
Thanks Randy! I really appreciate that buddy! It was definitely nice to be able to get out and cook some of the venison that I got myself and it really was delicious! The tarp blowing away was a pretty funny moment, that made up my mind that it was probably time to head out lol! I'm glad the new camera came out clearer, I also changed some of the settings so hopefully the videos will come out even better from now on
Ahhh, KeystoneArcher beat me to it! I have the same P-38 and P-51 can openers since retiring from the military 32 years ago and they work so much better than the ones on any combo knife kits, including a new Victorinox Rangergrip 178 bought recently. It was mainly the blade and the saw I needed. Amazon sells the P-38 for six bucks. I have one on my Jeep's key fob and one in my Pathfinder kit. A small piece of electrical tape wrap will prevent the can opener from opening in your pocket; the locking mechanism gets loose after numerous uses. That chili looks incredibly delicious and considering the weather conditions it's the perfect meal. Man, I love camping in the rain as the drops on the tarp or tent lull me into a deep REM sleep. Fishing in the rain is a favorite pastime for me as it seems to be more productive.
Thanks Alexander, yeah those p-38's sound pretty handy, I need to get a couple to keep in my different kits for stuff like this. I was looking at a 178 myself recently, mainly for the saw for doing little woodworking tasks in camp because the other saws are a little too big for fine work. Fishing in the rain does seem to be more productive must be the low pressure
@@BrooksandBirches Thanks for your reply! I did a lot of match fishing while stationed in England and during 80% of the matches it rained. The larger catches happened more so then than in sunny weather.
Hi beautiful scenery I love the sound of rain on the tarp you always put up the coolest tents and tarp tents Wow caveman tool out of wood awesome Spatula now i know how to open a can in the woods without a can-opener good one, that was so funny when the wind blew the tarp your killing me with laughter the look on your face lol looking forward to the next video
haha thanks Sue! Yeah the tarp shelter worked great all night but as soon as I opened up that side it wanted to take off with the wind but it did a good job at keeping me dry at least!
Regarding the tea, yes, there’s a tea that beats Yorkshire tea - Scottish Blend! ☺️
Great vid, rain on tarp = relaxation.
Ooooo that's fighting talk is that Jimmy hahaha I'm kidding each to their own I guess but being from Yorkshire myself I have to stick to Yorkshire tea
That's fighting talk. Ty-Phoo. Every time 😂
Nice ! I really enjoy the Woodford Reserve, Good bourbon for sure. Nice chill Overnighter !
Me too mate! It's a decent little bourbon, just right for a little overnighter like this
Brand new subscriber just today. I really enjoy your videos. Keep things up.
Welcome aboard Danny! Glad to have you with me mate! Cheers
“Kentucky bourbon wwwhhiiiskey” 😂😂 that was funny as hell! Good vid bro
hahaha thank buddy! Glad you liked it!
I like your approach to enjoying nature and your filming techniques . Great to see you eat well. What is your home country. Thanks for sharing your adventure .
Thanks John! Glad you enjoyed it my friend, I'm originally from England but live in the U.S. now
Awesome content. just a little tip... If you throw a toggle in your truckers hitch it makes for easy disassembly the next morning. Cheers
Thanks Rob! That's a great tip because I always have trouble getting them undone and then I always have to untie the last one I did the next time I'm out camping lol
I LOVE CAMPING IN THE RAIN GREAT SPOT TAKE CARE THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
ME TOO! IT MAKES A NICE CHANGE FOR SURE. YOU TOO!
That tree you’re standing by at first looks like a jack o lantern. Lol . It’s probably watching everything you do.
Haha well it is spooky season right! Maybe that wasn't the wind I could feel at night and it was all the ghosts flying around my tarp lol
Gorgeous there, even in the rain! Your chili looked excellent! That little spatula was pot on!!
Thanks Maggie! The chili is perfect on a cold day and you're right even in the rain it is very peaceful
Enjoyed your show! Im from CA, USA, Born here with 100% Yorkshire blood! 1st Generation American Boy Scout! avid Fly Fisherman and Hunter! Love to hear the Yorkshire accent! I just subscribed! I like your choice of dinner and whiskey! I used to do what you do and need to get back to it! only difference would be I bring my Black Lab! and longer stronger tent pegs! lol Peace! look forward to more shows! Keith R Skirrow
Hey Keith! Big shout out for Yorkshire!! I love it, one of my best friends live out in CA, spent most of his life in Yorkshire then moved back to Cali with his mom when we were teenagers so I like to get out and see him when I can. I'm working on my hunting skills and would love to know how to fly fish, I keep saying I'm going to learn, hopefully in the spring. Cheers mate!
Dude - I like how you roll with the punches - this is your 1st video I've watched - thanks man - subscribed!
Awesome, thank you mate! Glad you liked it, hopefully you will like some of the other videos on the channel
My dad always carried a P38 on his key chain so he would always have a can opener he even let us( HIS KIDS) use he, he would tell us what to do but we got the cans open; when my brothers went into the military they even got him extras, sometimes sure wish I had one now even for keepsake to remind me of him I will ask my bros if they have an extra thanks for sharing this adventure with us it was a great video God Bless you Chili looked amazing
Ever try the slightly larger P51 opener? Easier to use for guys like me with bear paws for hands.
@@Chilly_Billy never saw one my brothers dont do camping they stay home or vacation at family out of area
I'll have to take a look and try one next time, I like to use that little knife because my sister got it for me when I first moved here and was just getting into camping so it has a special place in my heart, it would come with me on all my early adventures and I think I even gutted my first trout with it
I like the way you are adventurous friends😊. greetings from Indonesia🙏
Greetings my friend! Terima Kasih!
@@BrooksandBirches 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome lol thanks for sticking to it.
You bet mate! Thanks for taking a look
Its certainly a nice peaceful area. We'll have a nice evening under the stars. Looks like night fell upon us auicklu. You should've told me to get some wood for the fire while you set up camp.
It certainly is a very peaceful area, a nice place to have all to myself to be able to relax under the tarp and meditate for a while
This amazing camp sight I've seen? u did it alone keep safe full watch your vedio wonderful
That is a very handsome tent that you have there! Not a trace of moisture anywhere!
Thanks Mark! The aquaquest tarps work great
Great video style for the weather and time of year. Thank you! 👍🏻
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome video Rob!! Chili looked great !!
Thanks Lisa! It was delicious
Plow points are my go to set up as well. Next time consider a ridgeline between 2 trees to attach the top point to. Also the line allow you to attached a line to the middle of tarp and raise the inside up for more room. Awesome video as always. Appreciate your hard work and the content.
Good call Scott! I haven't tried it with a ridgeline just yet but I'll give it a try next time, sounds like a cool idea to be able to slide it back and forth like that. Cheers mate
32:18 this is gold!!!!
I'm only at 3:49 (smiley face tree) and I already want to comment -
Weeeee otters are my favorite woodland animal!! I'm from Michigan so there were always a lot around. They even regularaly swam up and down the Detroit and Rouge rivers (umm...downtown area). At least they did in the nineties. I hope they're still around. They are seriously the most funnest creatures to interact with, once they warm up to you. People rave about dolphins but otters are where it's at. Okay! Back to the video.
edit: Yorkshire tea!
I'm getting used to new meds right now and the only thing that got me off the couch was your mention of Yorkshire tea. Thanks for the reminder! It's the first thing that's made me feel better.
edit again: I HATE those can openers! They have defeated me every time. I knew I was doing it wrong but I didn't know how wrong - now I feel like opening a can just to see if I can do it. Except I can't eat! Looks like a delicious start btw.
Edit because I'm oldish and forgetful: thanks again for another great video! Sorry it was so miserable and I hope you're feeling better!
Thanks Cleo! I hope you are feeling better too! I'm sorry to hear you are having a tough time of it but Yorkshire tea will fix what ales you as they say.
I lover Otters, I don't see a lot of them up here that often but I love them, they are so cute and playful and the way they use their little hands it's just so adorable haha
@@BrooksandBirches Oh my god I forgot about their little hands!! :-D otter hands make me stupidly happy.
Great video! Watching from Halifax, Nova Scotia 🇨🇦
Thats awesome! Thank you so much buddy!
I couldn’t help noticing the happy face on the tree at the 3:49 mark. 😊
haha I didn't even see that until people pointed it out to me lol
That looks like it was a rough one, Bet that venison chilli was the bomb 🤠
It sure was Herb! Added bonus knowing I provided it for myself too
Thanks for the video. Some of my best outings were in the rain.
Mine too Mickey! Always adds a little extra challenge too it
Nice chili dinner in the rain and a good bottle of WR.
You got that right Jeff! What more could you ask for
Awesome! Keep the overnighters coming!
Thanks Scott! Will do buddy!
Best and perfect video of the day 🙂🤗 I'm loving it.
Thank you so much 😀 glad you enjoyed it
@@BrooksandBirches your welcome anytime. Btw i always enjoyed watching your videos.
@@BrooksandBirches hello pal, may i ask you where are you from ?
try using the tin opener the correct way and it'll be alot quicker
Thanks for keeping it real. Not everything is peaches and cream in the wild. Good work.
Absolutely agree John! Sometimes you have to suffer for it a little
Good man, Bourbon drinker. Can’t beat it. Makers mark is my tipple.
You got that right! Love a good Bourbon
BTW, Amazon sells those compact accordion type urinals...no need to egress from a warm sleeping bag. Weighs just an ounce or two. Love your sense of humor :))
haha oh wow Alexander, I'm going to have to take a look at those, especially with these cold months coming up
Cracking adventure, your face when that tarp went 🤣
hahaha cheers mate! it was a right battle trying to keep it from flying away lol
@@BrooksandBirches sometimes mother nature is winning despite our best efforts 🏞️🌬️💨
Thanks for the video.
Yep,things can go bad guick. And in the rain even worse !
What is it they say? Your not training until it's raining.! Still a nice video.Your venison looked good.My wife likes venison stew...thanks for taking us along!!
You got that right Kenneth! haha I have heard corporals corner say that a couple of times. I have some stew meat from my dear as well so I'll be sure to bring some along, would be nice to let it slow cook over the fire
Another awesome video, thank you so much!
My pleasure Jeffrey! Thank you sir!
@@BrooksandBirches I recently bought a budget version of the DD tarp. Can't wait to try it out. Your videos are inspiring.
Great camp I do the same you need a big Tin for a firebox.👍
Love you bro from India I'm always watching your bushcraft show keep going on bro.....
Thank you so much Kamal 😀 will do my friend
That had to of been a really relaxing night with that rain on your tarp. Every time you let go of your skillet I was sure it was gonna spill haha (glad it didn't)! You mentioned a link, I don't see one in the description (Just so you know). Glad you got to get out, and of course share it with us. Take care Robert!
It really was Conar, there's something reassuring about hearing the rain on the tarp because you get a sense that any critters that might be tempted to come and mess with your camp are probably hunkered down somewhere! There should be a link in there for most of the things I had on this trip mate
wet, cold and windy...time to layer up.
Exactly Lucy!
Wet Wet Wet indeed! ....bet you were "wishing you were lucky" sorry couldn't resist... that was a challenging camp! Good though! And good food too. Where are you? It looks like Ontario Canada?
P38 openers are routinely on many fold out knives, the Swiss Army ones are really strong and sharp, a joy to use, beats cranking a handle!
I like the added leverage and grip area of my Victorinox Trekker when using the can opener.
I like using this one because my sister gave me the knife when I first moved here and was just starting to get into camping so it holds a special place in my heart
The trekkers are cool! I have looked at those before
Try a dash of Bourbon in the chilli it really adds something to it but quite subtle.
In everyone's day a little rain must fall... You got a little more than your share !
Well said Robert, enduring the rain just makes us more deserving of the days when the sun is shining
@@BrooksandBirches You got that right !
Greta video! You completely destroyed those cans. You used the can opener all wrong , it hooks on the outside ridge if the can. Opens easy and smooth. Please look it up, and best of luck!
Im eating chili and grilled cheese also I'm setting on the banks of the Tennessee River fishing, life is good, keep them video coming, I enjoy watching them.
Sounds like a great day to me buddy! Enjoy! I'll keep the videos coming for you
Food looks great, the cold makes you hungry so go for it.
You got that right! Nothing better than Chili to warm your insides on a cold day
If you had a P38 you would not need knife to open can it's a military can opener you can put on key ring
I'll look at getting one because I've never tried one before
Hell I'll send you one if I had an address
Perfect spot and awesome fall colours
I agree mate!
thank you for sharing your video 🌲🦅🌲
Anytime Brian! Thanks for coming along!
Real world camping!! Good on ya
Looks like a beautiful place
It really is Edwin!
As far as the Swiss Army can opener, hold the tool in your left hand and the can in the right.. Clip the bottom point to the bottom of the rim and rock the top point into the lid right next to the rib.. You will naturally get the groove and this is the most basic and easiest way.. Agian, awesome video.. Please keep them coming bro!!!
And turn counterclockwise working the opener backwards..
Thanks Kevin! Yeah it's been a while since I had to use the little can opener on a trip like this so I was a little rusty so thanks for the tip mate! I'll keep the vids coming for you! Cheers
Great scenery, video is really clear.
Thanks Gail! Glad you enjoyed it
Camping in the rain is so frustrating!!! I much prefer -40 😁
Dinner looked great!, hopefully you reserved a bunch of that deer for jerky or snack sticks 😉
Haha me too mate! I grew up in the rain so give me cold and snow any day lol I have a bunch that I would like to use for Jerky especially
You had me at yorkshire tea !! A man after my own heart and then i pissed myself as your tarp vanished . All it needed was a “be reyt” lol good video
Aye Liam!! Can't beat Yorkshire tea, it's the best tea hands down! haha I know it was timed to perfection really
Great memories; he passed back in 2004 thank you for reminding me
Anytime my friend!
OMG the tarp couldn't hang on 🤣🤣..other than the wind it might have been pleasant. nice vid.
Haha yeah it couldn't hold on any longer! It was quite nice until the wind picked up
I love your accent, by the way. We have a saying over here, USA, "If it ain't raining we ain't training." From what I understand about England, it rains there every time the sun goes up or down over there. As for the yawns, it makes everything real not faked. They say it's easy to do good when everything is good, however, you can tell a man's real character on his bad days, not when everything goes good. Keep them coming, I'll keep watching.
Thanks Mark! Haha I know the saying well from watching Corporals Corner! You're not wrong about the UK, especially up north where I'm from, I think that's why I'm probably sick of the rain now lol give me snow over rain any day of the week!
Woodford Reserve is the bourbon whiskey used to make mint juleps at the Kentucky Derby. As I'm sure you are aware, it's good.
I was not aware of that Chase but there you go you learn something new everyday! Maybe next year a video around derby day with mint juleps
Ei Amigo... que bonito seu vídeo... gostei \o/ .... comida feijão - carne e molho de tomate com pão... showw abraço até mais, mais um inscrito ai no seu canal...
