Thank you for this. I had a TKR two weeks ago and yesterday after watching this video I was able to go up and down stairs in a modified normal position. Onward and upward!

I feel like for me (4 1/2 months post op, RTKR), the issue with going down stairs is not so much the angle of my leg and knee, but having the quad strength to lower myself gently in that moment when all my weight is on the surgical leg as I step down, if that makes sense. That said, I work in a building with 7.5 and 8.5 inch stairs (yes, I measured), and there is no elevator, so I’m getting better and better just because I have no choice but to do the stairs multiple times a day, every day. However, what started out as the biggest curse - the stairs - has now become the best therapy for me.

Check out "knee over toes guy". I had a TKR about 4 or 5 years ago, and find his stuff helps my good knee avoid pain, while it's carrying my weak knee, if that makes sense?

How long did you go down one step at a time leading with your new knee? Going up is pretty easy on both knees. I had RTKR 8/2 and LTKR 11/1. My left knee is about to do me in! I’m no where close to trying to go down stairs normally but I’m going to practice what he just showed us. Merry Christmas!

@@ksw8415 I actually was up and walking around, using stairs, pretty much immediately. I asked the doc how long did he expect it to be before I could put my full weight on the knee and he said right now, it's just the soft tissue stuff you need to work on. So as soon as he left I got up and walked to the bathroom... then just walked around as normal, including stairs. My main problem as been getting the range of movement, and worrying that my other knee would need doing. Hence the exercises to keep my good knee healthy, even though it seems counter-intuitive to stress that knee, it does seem to help! One tip: I used to really worry about falling while hiking and sitting down on that knee, bending it too far... Well that finally happened a few months ago... and it was fine! Yeah it hurt, I was panicked, thinking I'd broken something, but when I stood up, fine, just a bit tender. I uploaded some vids of a little drone the other day, and I can see I limp, but generally walking well. Merry Christmas to you too! :)

@@ksw8415 I was about 3 1/2 months post op before I started going down with alternating feet. I had tried it once before and it really hurt, so I didn’t try it again for a while, but when I finally did, it was stiff and sore, but doable. I have steep stairs at work that I have to do multiple times a day, so I get plenty of practice, and it’s getting better and better. Now, 4 1/2 months post op, I’m practicing not just going up and down the stairs, but doing it smoothly without holding onto the railing - although I keep my hand near the railing just in case. Good luck and Merry Christmas to you too!

My RTKR is at 8 months and I can go down the stair one in front of the other but it's tight and I ended up hiking up my right side as I go down the stair. It depends on the height of the step, 7 inch is the cut off. I'm going to do this exercise and see how that goes. Thank you for the video and advice.

Sounds just like me! Have to have a rail on my left to feel at all possible after RTKR

I'm no longer on Facebook, too much drama in my small little town. ?, I had my TKR done 3/23. Done with tons of PT. It's hard for me to explain, but I now have a bunch of hard lumps on top of my kneecap. Right under the skin. I'm still having issues going up and down stairs, getting in and out of my car. Does anyone know anything about lumps on top of kneecap, under the skin.
