Me two Janet. I’m 3 weeks after right knee replacement. I’m a Martial Artist and hope to get back to at least 80% of my training. . But Janet some reason I think I know you. That last name Izzo. I’m from Beaver Falls Pa. I now live in Santa Rosa Ca. Your name just sounds really familiar.
I walk for 45-60 minutes at a time, walk stairs and ride a bicycle just to improve my rotation and I still have stiffness and soreness everyday and it has been 5 months have patience.
I'm 3 years post and would like to share my thoughts. My recovery has many phases. Beyond the trauma and function recovery, there's 'feeling', and adjustment. 'Feeling' / proprioception - brains need to accept the new normal. Knees didn't hurt but did feel different, low level concern that pain might hit. I was about 1 year until I no longer noticed my knees. I play lots of tennis, after about a year, maybe 18 months, my knees felt stronger, bone growth? 'Adjustment' - I'm three years and still unlearning decades of adaptations. It was into year two before I really felt comfortable walking down stairs how I used to without thinking. I had been stiff legging, heel walking. This is just one of the adaptations that take time. I'm still changing my habitual adaptation of leaning over in tennis to bending my knees. Good news for me was it keeps getting better. Regarding the first few months, I worked extremely hard, hours each day, my knees were painful, and it was about two+ months before I could walk on good surfaces without worry. I started easy tennis (stationary hitting) at 2-3 months. At 6 months I could play matches, although quickly overdid it and was sore for a while. Occasionally, my knees still get some soreness, passes in a few days. Guess, my point is, don't expect to be 18 again after 8 weeks, maybe 40 yo knees after some time. I think a lot of the internet stories about how amazingly fast someone recovered and doing marathons right away or some bs are fantasy, or, someone about to gut themselves into a breakdown.
Seven weeks post-op on right knee here. Some of us are also being limited by having had surgery on the first knee, while the other one is just as bad as the first one was before surgery. This is very limiting when it comes to some of the exercises that would really strengthen the surgical knee. Riding an exercise bike would be great for the “fixed” knee, but impossible for the other one. I still had the scheduled (every 3 months) injection a few weeks ago in the non-surgical knee, but it only helps to a point; certainly not enough for it to participate in exercises that require both, such as a stationary bike or longer walking sessions. Going up and down stairs without having to do it sideways AND holding on to the rail, which I really feel like I would be able to do by now, is not possible because of the non-surgical knee. So, those of us in this situation have to add that factor into the healing timeline equation too. Thanks for ALL your videos Tony! They’re very helpful! ❤
7 weeks post TKR. First week was pure hell. Pain beyond belief. Being on blood thinners didn’t help as I couldn’t take anti-inflammatory meds so a ton of swelling bruising. Finally got my meds tweaked and each subsequent week has seen some improvement - but this is long journey. Still sleeping like crap; numbness and nerve pain. Each person is different for sure. Just taking it one day at a time - PT is key - and hope in the long run this was the right decision.
Your comment is definitely encouraging to me. Had my surgery 6/29/22 The stiffness and the pain is unbearable ☹️ I keep hearing it will get better and I'm trusting God that it will... But honestly, right now I'm not happy about the decision at all..... but I'm looking forward to the day when I'll be able to say otherwise......in the meantime comments like yours is a blessing 💝
I had a tkr 9 weeks ago. I was doing so well and pushed it too much but now have put myself back at least 2 weeks. My therapist said 3 months to a year. U doing well. Keep going. It does get better
@@rubywedderburn9487 I also had tremendous pain, subsiding, for the first month. Second month still hurt. There's a lot of healing to do. My conclusion was - don't believe the internet stories of hop, skip, and jumping out of the operation room (exaggeration, but, you've seen the stories).
Hi Tony, I'm at 8 weeks from my total knee replacement. I've been doing exercises put forth by my physiotherapist twice a day. Yesterday, I went back to the gym to ride a recumbent bike for 20 minutes and did some stretching only for close to an hour. I walked 3 1/2 blocks to and from the community center. ( I'm 60 and typically I go to work out twice a week for two hours with cardio and a mixed muscle weight program.) By the end of the day, my knee was quite sore and I needed an ice pack. I took some stronger medication to help. I realized after seeing your video I had done too much. I guess its a balance of trying to push ahead to get active again, but at the same time letting you knee heal.
I am much more informed as a result of this video. Thank you! I will have my TKR in about a month and looking forward to having one healthy knee again! For this, I will adhere to all recommendations from those highly educated health professionals who are performing in the surgery room and those assisting me in recovery. I will have the second TRK when my surgeon says it is okay.
Thank you very much for your vidioes and explanations. This is my 7th week of total knee replacement. I still have stiffness at the back of my knee and tightness on the knee which makes it very hard to bend my knee, I'm only able to bend it at 90 degrees. I was being hard on myself until I read some of your comments. Everyone heals differently.
I am 5 days since having the first of 2 tkr's. I am finding PT difficult, getting through the pain barrier, but am starting to feel the benefit of it, and progress is happening daily. Needing a second TKR limits what l can achieve e.g. managing to walk downstairs (l go down on my backside at the moment). This video is very informative and encouraging. I am certainly going to listen to more from Tony. Thank-you so, so much for taking the time to do these - you have given me hope and encouragement. Meg, from Scotland. X
I'm in so much pain everyday it's making me depressed. I had mine Done on April 24th. I can't sleep and I'm never without pain. I regret having it done.
Thanks Jules, that gives me hope. I’m 9 weeks out and hoping my range of motion improves quickly. I’m at 3 degrees straight and 115 bending. I still have pain that radiates to my back too.
Spot on video! I am a home health PT and see many TKA and THA right after surgery at a surgery center and see them at home until ready for OP PT. Don't compare yourselves to others and even a previous TKA you had, everyone is different and every surgery is different. Keep moving...motion is lotion!
Great summary of the reality of a knee replacement op. I'm 6 weeks post part knee replacement op and he gets it spot on. Swelling and lack of flexibility and movement still significant. I can walk unaided and can stretch as per the physio needs, but I'm a good month or 3 from "normality". What I wasn't advised of pre op, was the mental strain that it causes. Sleep is difficult first 2-3 weeks, the absolute lack of inpendence affected me, as did boredom (so much time to yourself!) and no one told me how long and arduous the recovery would be, until afterwards. Roll all that physical and mental turmoil together and you realise that a knee replacement op is not a walk in the park (no pun intended!). I'm sure it will be worth it, but it's a long road.
My bilateral total knee replacement was November 3rd 2022 currently at 5 months in my thighs are very weak and painful and worse off than prior to surgery so far, looking forward to dancing within 1 year, motivated.
I am 6 weeks PO and still use a walker because my "other" knee is angry & we need to take care of that one too. But it's going to be awhile before I can get over the trauma of the 1st TKR. PT is painful & slow for me, however I am making progress.
I had my left knee replaced unexpectedly 10.5 years ago. It was two full years before that knee felt "normal" again. I had this right knee replaced on Sept 7, 2022. This time, recovery is much better, in some ways, and about the same in other ways. Nonetheless, I am so glad that I found your channel. This is great information for review. It also reminds me that this is going to take time, but that's not a bad thing. This left knee fully recovered. There's every reason to hope that the right will fully recover as well. Thank you for all the wonderful information.
Thanks I had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago and I have some swelling off and on, so I was worried getting ready to complain to my doctor. Thanks for setting my mind at ease.
Hi I am really enjoying listening to you. I always learn something new. I had TKR 1 month ago today. I am doing really well! I drive and do stairs and have no limp. A bit of clicking. I do PT once every other week. My doc and PT are amazed. The only issue I have is a little swelling at the end of the day if I’m on my feet to much. I had hip replacement on they left side 12 years ago. KR was on left as well. Also spinal cord stimulator on the left hip. I am no longer using that. The battery finally went dead after 15 years. I’m single 63 years old. Have osteo arthritis all over and fibro. My two index fingers have become crooked the last few years.
First knee replacement went well. I was in the woods hiking (carefully with trekking poles) at 4 weeks. Now 4 weeks post op for the 2nd knee and it’s very discouraging. Still using a cane and my knee seems locked at 107 degrees. Trying to bend any further isn’t possible. I can barely bend it at all after sitting or sleeping and still have excruciating pain in both the knee and thigh muscles. I’m icing, doing the physio, moving around. Very frustrated with my lack of progress. 😢
I had my surgery in a hospital with a very aggressive physical therapy program the day after surgery. Two walking sessions. Two 30 minute PT sessions. Seemed to have a one size fits all system. Didn’t care that I hadn’t slept. Didn’t care that I was in significant pain. Didn’t care that the therapy was upsetting to the point of tears. Basically took no cues from me that they were pushing too hard, while at the same time noting that I was in great pain. Seems counterproductive. What a way to treat someone who has just been through a brutal, bloody surgery.
Wow! So glad I found your channel. Had TKR 3 months ago and you’re right on with your assessments and advice. An important thing is to strengthen your muscles before surgery. I also do the same exercise with both legs that they give me in PT which helps with overall fitness. Also straighten leg as flat and straight as possible, and I physically pull my knee to get as much flexion as possible. Thanks again for your videos,
My TKA Right is April 29, 2022. Scared. I’ve been working out for 6 months in preparation. I also swim 2-3 miles a week. I feel my muscles are stronger. Thank you for telling us your experience. Very helpful. Have to do the left also. Hope I’m brave enough to go thru with #2.
Accurate timeline...5 weeks in...walking pretty much normally -- once I work out some daily stiffness. I have overdone on it on good days and had swelling the next day. All in all, still feels and function better now than before surgery.
Today is July 5, 2021. I had my right knee replacement surgery on April 20, 2021. I have no pain, have complete knee bend, full straight leg. I feel GREAT! My doc and physical therapists call me a “rock star”. I only took Tylenol extra strength for pain. I have severe systemic RA. I have been recovering super fast and super well BECAUSE 6 months prior I was doing vigorous water aerobics an hour a day 6 days a week. Following the surgery, I had a machine that exercised my leg, 3 Xs a day for 2 hours at a time. I used my walker to walk 15 minutes a day. I was driving in 2 weeks. By the 4th week I was back in the pool as well as weight Exercises with a PT. I will have my other knee replacement surgery August 3rd. Both knees were bone on bone. I wish there was something to straighten my hands. My fingers are crooked. They don’t hurt but they are getting worst. Best wishes and stay encouraged everyone!
@@bourgsusan first off my APOLOGIES for not responding much, much sooner!!! I did not see your reply until TODAY, January, 23, 2022!! Next I am still doing water exercises,, have increased it from 1 hour a day to 2 hours a day 5 days a week, plus about 15 minutes of ankle exercises in the jacuzzi. I am quite fit. However the RA has done a number on my left ankle, making it very difficult for me to walk with my canes “CANE and ABLE”. Hee hee. As for my water exercises, I start off by walking 10 minutes back and forth. I then walk side ways for 10 minutes.with this exercise, I walk side ways stretching my right leg first then bringing in my left leg. When I reach the end of the pool, I do a Uee, continuing in the same direction for 10 minutes. Then I do the same thing with my left leg. So thus far, I have 30 minutes of exercise. Next, I walk backwards for 10 minutes. Now I start with my leg exercises in a standing position. I kick my leg straight up, bring it down and extend it sideways so it looks like an L. I DO THIS 10 times on one leg, then 10 on the other. To make it interesting, I I switch directions and do it again. I do 50 reps on each leg. It doesn’t hurt or tires me out as I am in the water. I switch directions after I do 10 leg lifts on each leg. Next exercise is one I made up. While standing still on both legs, holding on to the ledge, I bend my lower leg at the knee back so my foot touches my butt. I do 50 reps on each leg again switching directions for fun. Then I do another 10 minutes of “toy soldier “marches”. I also do 50 squats. I either go to the very shallow end of the pool or do squats on the flushed stairs with the wall, where people climb out by holding on to the handles and stepping up and out of the pool. If you want to know more exercises I do, let me know and I will respond much sooner next time. If only I didn’t have bad feet and a bad ankle. Still, I am very happy. Peace in Christ Jesus friend.
I am 68 yrs. old and just had my second knee replacement 1mth ago today and I feel like I'm doing even better this time around, not quite sure why. I feel though today at 1mth I've reached a milestone already. I'm walking very well, and can go up and down the stairs easily. Doing my exercises regularly, is what has helped more than anything.
I am so grateful to know that I can use the elliptical machine at the gym, in another video. I also used the x10 machine right from the get-go. It was a godsend for flexion and extension, after two weeks on the machine I had a massive improvement, but didn't know what machine to use when I wanted to go to the gym. My outpatient pt was pretty much limited to using the recumbent bike, which was fine, but I think the elliptical will be the best bet. Thank you for that video too!
Coming up to 8 weeks after surgery and you’re spot on with the timing. Encouraging to hear what’s ahead for the year. Keeping moving and the physio is definitely the key, but more important is personal attitude. Thanks again for sharing this.
I had my TKR almost three months ago ………it is painful but I never knew I’d be walking and bending my knee two weeks later that my Dr was impressed!!!!! but I did what everybody told me to do heed their advice !!! THERAPY very important and with that in mind I gave my therapy110% ……pain was there but I did them slowly quality exercises I started with home therapy twice a week and my exercises she gave me three times a day then I went down with two times a day then started gym therapy twice a week for a month now GW I’m a few months I’m doing right knee and praying it goes well like this one 🙏
Tony, I watched all your excellent videos before my knee replacement 4 months ago - they worried me a bit as my actual experience was less onerous! At 7 weeks I had 130 degree flexion and do stairs daily, walk daily, do aquafit in a hot pool 3 x a week, and now go to the gym as I want to get back to doubles tennis next year (I'm 77). But at 4 months my knee is still stiff and sore (no pain) and clicks with every movement, even though I can kneel and squat. I guess I have to be patient. I'm in Canada, wish I lived near your physio clinic!
Took 3 weeks of my own devised PT, from your tips and what I did for my other knee(meniscus surgery) I can finally go up the stairs with the TKR side. Like you say, take care of yourself, take time to heal, ice the area, etc...and I know I'll be back on the ice this winter. ❤😊
Thank you! I'm having surgery soon and searched for a timeframe of what I can expect. I understand everyone is different and heals at varying times, but knowing ahead of time allows me to mentally prepare.
I’m at the 4 month mark, and feel stuck in progress. Ongoing pain and stiffness. My flexion is great- 135 with extension at 0. But, still unmanageable to walk or do light tasks without pain and discomfort. Hoping at some point this improves. Right now I feel worse off than I did with my “bad knee” before surgery. 😢
Thank you so much for this video. I am at 4 weeks post surgery. Am making progress with PT and home exercises. Am very tired and hoping that will get better soon.
I’ve seen a lot of videos on TKR and Tony’s seems to be the best, most helpful vlog. I “swear” by his information. It’s helped me a lot and now 2 months since surgery.
Your advice is excellent. I’m in the UK and no one advised me of pre-surgery exercises. Post surgery I’ve had sciatica and have done no walking until yesterday. Just about managed the PT exercising twice daily. But I will gradually increase my walking time. Thanks for sharing your very informative videos.
Although all my other limbs and joints were healthy, post-op I needed a walker for three weeks! Also it took a month before the post-op pain subsided enough for me to sleep a few uninterrupted hours. The surgeon was indifferent to the discomfort. “You SHOULDN’T be having that much pain,” was his comment.
I had my right TKR a year ago March 8, 2021 and I am still in a lot of discomfort. Now I am on trial injections to deaden the nerves. My knee as bowed out so now my surgeron is saying we may need to go back in to see what is going on. Something is suddenly going on. Now I need a left TKR. I will go back in the right knee when we go into the left knee. Not doing 3 trips on this. It has been frustataion for me. Caused me to not return to work as I could not function all day.
@@ppollock Oh my☹️ I'm sorry about your plight. I'm three and a half weeks in and the stiffness and pain is simply unbearable ☹️ definitely will not do it again ☹️ I wish you all the best going forward 🙏🏿
Hell yes never again knee replacement 15/5/23/ can’t get to high St, 5/6 weeks no after care No District Nurse to dress, clean the wound Stuff stolen? By cleanse team
I’m in my 9th week. Still do not have 120 ROM. Until recently, I felt this was a really bad idea. I’m starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. I expected so much more out of myself but was thrown for a loop because I was constantly nauseated and just thought it was part of the process. It was the meds that was causing the nausea and fogginess. So around the 7th week I dropped the prescriptions and took OTC meds. After a few days my mind cleared and nausea stopped. This was very frustrating and caused me to lose ground on recovery as I could barely eat (for a month). Not everyone reacts this way, but I did. But, I do think it will be worth it at some point. Everyone is definitely different!
Thanks Tony … its good to hear your workable & reasonable approach….. I am 68 & are at a good place after 12 weeks , the exercise bike , takes time but good for flexibility, also had blood clots , is unusual I know but cannot reinforce too much.. take notice of your general health as well as the knee….
12 hours walking on cement /cast iron grating with over 20,000 steps most days. Probably won't be rushing anything as far as going back to work at almost 60 yrs old. I'm thinking 3-4 months !
Thanks that was a great video. And pretty much how I experienced it. Week two was terrible pain wise but improved week three and four dramatically. I’m 7 weeks with my new knee now . And doing everything really well now. Still gets a bit sore at nights. But I’m quiet an active person with horses so lots of things to keep me busy. Not back riding my horses yet though. Wouldn’t be quiet strong enough. Get stiffness if I stand in one spot for to long but a few steps and is comes right. Huge improvement from what I had.
I’m on day 21 and just started with a cane . Swelling has been an issue for me but trying to rest more and elevate ! 1st Dr appointment coming up in 2 days .. It’s been a real struggle these 1st few weeks but slow and steady wins the race 💪
Hi Tony, I'm really enjoying your postive and encouraging videos. I'm over 8 weeks post surgery from my knee replacement and just as you said, things are going well, still going to physio for pointed specific therapy exercises, have occasional swelling as I'm trying to do more, but not knowing where the new boundaries are. I'm wondering if any one has asked you about going into whirl pools, hot tubs or soaker tubs? Definitely don't want to go in if it results in my scar opening up again or not being good for recovery. What are your thoughts?
I didn’t realize I should be off walker, Im one month after surgery. About a week ago I went to bathroom at night without the walker and was surprised how well I did. This morning before seeing your video I started walking around the kitchen without it. I really appreciate you sharing this info and going to try more. Thanks so much! Any tips on getting on and off standard height toilet?
Hi sir thanks a lot i have both knee surgery at same time already 8 weeks but still I have stiff ness and right knee is hard to pull during exercises I am doing lot of exercises recommend by my hospital therapist.
Anthony, I am a right Total knee replacement patient 2 weeks post op. I have been doing my exercises religiously 3 times a day from day, I have in home therapy 3 times a week by a Physical therapist & also use a CPM but I lay in bed for sleeping at night only, I cannot mentally tolerate laying in there, It makes me feel like I am bed ridden & sick, we are not sick because of a knee replacement. I have my leg in the CPM 1 hour in the mornings with my CTM (ice machine) on my knee before I get up & start my exercises. Kind of a warm up I guess. After 1 week, I doubled the reps from 10 to 20 on all of my exercises & added a couple of your exercises to the ones Expected of me by my therapist. At the end of week 2, I am at -2 degrees extension & 115 degrees Flexion. When I reached the point that 10 reps were easy & I couldn't feel the muscle stretch, I knew it was time to increase the reps. I know there is no benefit to us just going through the motions. Sure, it feels good not going through the pain of stretching the muscles, but there is no benefit to us, what so ever, if we can't feel the stretch. I do not sit down for over 30 minutes without getting up & walking for at least 5 minutes, except sitting with my leg Iced & elevated for 2 hours after each exercise session for recovery time. We all know recovery time is as important as the exercises themselves. I do push myself to the maximum I can do on all of my exercises, as far as possible and holding as long as I can mentally take the pain. We do have to know our bodies though, & know what the difference is between stretching the muscle to the extreme, & going too far & straining the muscle. I know that straining the muscles is of no benefit to anyone & I would just set myself back in my recover time. No one said this was going to be easy & there is only one way to relive the pain & recover from this operation & that is to get out of bed or out of your chair, put the cloths on you wore before the operation ( this helps me mentally to know I am starting to get my life back. 50 percent of this recovery is mental), but you also have to do the work. The more you sit, the more pain you are going to experience. You can't sit in your chair feeling sorry for yourself & eat pain pills. That is not the answer. My best pain relief is doing my exercises. The pain goes away during & hours after each session & with each passing day the pain is less & less. I take one pain pill 30 minutes before each exercise session, that is all you need if you do the exercises & stay active. No one likes pain, I hate it, That is why I had the procedure done in the first place but without going through the pain of your exercises, you have had an operation that now has placed you bed or chair ridden & has taken you from limited mobility to even more limited mobility. After 2 weeks I am walking, & going up & down stairs, I do carry my cane for safety but it never touches the floor except to position myself going up & down the stairs. I walk about 300 feet after every exercise session. Concentrating on walking my normal gait, standing up straight, both feet straight in front of me, making sure I go through my full gait motion with every step. I am very happy with my results so far, sure I have my good days & bad days with pain. The pain is very minimal & tolerable. The only area I have of what I could call a nagging pain is in my upper thigh, I believe where the tourniquet was placed during surgery. I am working that pain out with your roller exercise in another one of your videos ( works wonders by the way). last night was the first night I slept like a Baby through the whole night & didn't wake up until my alarm went off to start my first exercise session of the day at 5 am. Thank you Anthony for all the great video content, helping us through this journey from pre- op to full recovery. I watch your videos during my exercises also, it keeps my mind off the pain. Your knowledge & information has been such a great help to me & also has kept me motivated. I will be forever grateful to you Sir. You are the Best!
I just found your post! Thank you so much. You said all the things I needed to hear. Actually YOU put everything together beautifully. You answered questions I had and gave me a workable time line. You are great. This is day 10 for me since surgery. At first no pain. Tylenol only. Unable to sleep, took 2 Narco and slept for the fist night!! Feel like I vacillate with my pain levels. Is that normal? Bonnie
I'm in my mid 60s and its been a very hard recovery! Almost at 8 wks, still have pain and use a cane and a walker. Knee still doesn't feel like mine. Hope it gets better with time. I go to physio as well. Sandy
Thank you for a clear explanation! At 4 weeks post op, how much time on my feet can I do? If it 20 mins…then how much rest in between 20 min. Segments? Thank you!
@@MrKeyman04 That sucks! Excuse my language, but it does. I’m pre-op, and trying to learn all about this! I hope you’re feeling better everyday & not letting “setbacks” discourage you!
Unfortunately at 7 weeks Ive been in the hospital twice. I got blood clots. I don’t feel I am progressing well at all. Constantly in pain. Not sleeping well at all.
Not sure about getting away from walker after a week. I am 6 weeks post op and can walk unattended but still use walker for hiking in the park. Most of this video is very encouraging. My range of motion is good and strength is okay. My goal is to return to the things I liked to do in after 3 months.
March 17th, total knee replacement. May 17th first day back to work. Exercises before surgery should be mandatory. I know they helped me with recovery and then PT. Pain? Of course you just had a surgery on your body. Elevate and ice. The advice he gave is spot on. Not everyone is the same . Some recover quicker some slower. Be patient don’t get discouraged have the confidence and attitude that everything will be okay.
Thanks for the Great Info.......Had a left Patella fix 2 Surgeries then a right knee replacement feb 1 st moving through the process thanks for your inputs Great Assistant to my recovery........👍😃
At the age of 70 l had double total knee replacement. After a period of five weeks, l was off of all pain meds and feeling great. Now, after two years, l don't even think about it. It was life changing.
My dad made his TKR at 83 yrs old. I am physiotherapists. I did my plan based on his goals after recovery which is doing minimal task like walking to Mosque to pray and riding car to go to market. So he already use stick to walk, he made tkr to get rid of pain. I start with ice and ankle pumb and made ROM vain faster then recommended as he was under pain medication. I got full rom at week 5. He is doing well but some ppl told its to fast!
I am 2 weeks & a few days out from my total knee replacement & I just did a "very short" grocery store run (with my cane), am 5.5 hours since last pain meds & I'm now hurting with my leg up! I'm hopeful of my progress & need to just give myself time to heal!! 👍👍👍 to EVERYONE out there learning to live with their new knee!!! 🙏🙏🙏God bless all of you (me included!)🙏🙏🙏
@Stephen Willis Hi Stephen, im at 4° straight knee, 4weeks since surgery, they want me at 4°. You said ur at 35°?? Am i getting my stats correctly? Cuz theres a serious discrepancy, wondering if i heard correctly.
I have undergone B/L TKR five weeks ago. I have already went through the initial painful three weeks, I am now much better and attending my office since one week. The only problem is with my sleep. Whatever best I try, with or without braces or with ice packs. I can’t have a good sleep of more than three hours. That too very late in the night or early morning. I just want to know is there any remedy for this? Is it normal in this period? My stiff knees pains goes to my mind and I can’t sleep in any posture. Many thanks for your support. I like your post very much.
I have not found a great solution for sleep. Some people will say getting early morning sun exposure helps with the circadian rhythms. Others will try different foods or supplements.
Hi Tony, I’m 5 weeks post operation after a bilateral knee replacement. I’ve had to do this from the very beginning without the use of opioids so it’s been a real challenge. Since I started physical therapy I feel as if my progress is two steps forward then one step backward. What bothers me most is the low grade pain starting in my knee’s and radiating into my hips to my lower back, especially at night. Lord I hope this ache ends soon, I’m thoroughly sick and tired of it… Anyway thanks for your video…All the best to you!
First week I had a nerve block in each leg instead of Morphine, after that I used Celebrex and Meloxicam… My pain subsided overnight after 9 weeks! Now I have 135 degrees range of motion in both knees and zero pain, even after walking 5,6,7 miles! I’m fortunate!!!!
Most of the time you’ll have better pain relief from an Anti inflammatory rather than an opiate! Basically you are just in for a couple of tough months… Period! The last thing you need is an addiction to opioids or sleep medication when your knees are healed…
@markstevens6682 Thanks:) I had the nerve block for 7 days, too. And then, of course, an anti-inflammatory, but I'm still needing the narcotic at times. I'm 3 and half weeks post surgery now.
Hey Tony, Thank God I found your channel , and you for all your time & effort . I am coming up on 6 weeks from my TKR. I had an old football injury & 2 surgeries back in 79-80, I finally got to the point of not being able to walk for the last 3 months before my replacement. I was doing good w/ home PT. after my last session I was doing an exercise & I felt a pop and a tearing feeling on the interior side of my incision . It bruised and swelled immediately. I went to my 1st out patient PT session, and they pushed way to hard & everyday feels like my 1st day after surgery, I was doing so good, now my outlook feels bleak. But better now that I have some answers w/ your site, Thanks Bobby Pesare
Hi I had my right knee replaced on May 18th stayed overnight in the Hosp things seemed to go well. walked around hours after the surgery. in the Hosp felt fine . The nurse said to me your a great patient but I'm not going to lie to you . when the nerve blockers wear off the pain isn't going to come on slow it will hit you like a freight train. Well I would say it took about 50 hours after the surgery but the train showed up and her description was accurate. Believe me when I say I'm no drama queen and I have had several surgery's in my past and always handled pain well. This is totally different I'm ok with most of the pain people describe but after sitting for awhile with leg raised iced etc. Every time When I begin to get up while lowering my leg there is a rush of pain concertation on the side of my knee meaning the left side of my right knee that had the surgery. the pain is off the chart. It feels like someone is crushing the flesh in a vise. takes about 10 minutes to go away or until I put my leg back up. This has been going about 5 days and the pain killers are not helping I would like to know the reason for the intense rush of pain while lowering my leg. I have an appointment to see my surgeon tomorrow. Thanks for your time
This is very encouraging! I'm still stiff off and on at 2 weeks and 3 days. I guess I'm normal!!!!
Janet Izzo I have a new series of videos coming out tonight or tomorrow. Keep an eye out.
@@bigjim383 I have also in same condition

Thanks for your honesty
Finally.....an empathetic therapist👏👏👏 thank you🙏
This has been the most helpful guy on the internet for me the last couple of weeks !
This my biggest fear. How am I going to rehabilitate one knee when the other is shot.
How it going@@SHUB281
7 weeks post TKR. First week was pure hell. Pain beyond belief. Being on blood thinners didn’t help as I couldn’t take anti-inflammatory meds so a ton of swelling bruising. Finally got my meds tweaked and each subsequent week has seen some improvement - but this is long journey. Still sleeping like crap; numbness and nerve pain. Each person is different for sure. Just taking it one day at a time - PT is key - and hope in the long run this was the right decision.
Your comment is definitely encouraging to me.
Had my surgery 6/29/22
The stiffness and the pain is unbearable ☹️ I keep hearing it will get better and I'm trusting God that it will...
But honestly, right now I'm not happy about the decision at all..... but I'm looking forward to the day when I'll be able to say otherwise......in the meantime comments like yours is a blessing 💝
@@rubywedderburn9487 how are you doing?
I had a tkr 9 weeks ago. I was doing so well and pushed it too much but now have put myself back at least 2 weeks. My therapist said 3 months to a year. U doing well. Keep going. It does get better
@@rubywedderburn9487 I also had tremendous pain, subsiding, for the first month. Second month still hurt. There's a lot of healing to do. My conclusion was - don't believe the internet stories of hop, skip, and jumping out of the operation room (exaggeration, but, you've seen the stories).
Can you give me a bit more information on your condition at surgery line Age? Weight? And fitness level pre-op?
It is a balancing act for sure. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for encouraging us
I am much more informed as a result of this video.
Mine took 18 month, regretted it for 10 month, it's ow fantastic, so don't get down, just keep doing the work
I'm in so much pain everyday it's making me depressed.

Great advice! Thank you
Great summary of the reality of a knee replacement op.
I hope you're dancing and feeling great 🎉
I am 6 weeks PO and still use a walker because my "other" knee is angry & we need to take care of that one too. But it's going to be awhile before I can get over the trauma of the 1st TKR.
PT is painful & slow for me, however I am making progress.
I absolutely love these talks. So easy to understand and reassuring.Thank you from New Zealand.
Thanks so much for the video so helpful this is scary the pain at 3 weeks is terrible
Much appreciated your insight. Listening from Singapore.
9 days Post Op. Excellent Comments. 1st week was tough, totally agree with mental challenges and frustration you mentioned. Well done. Thank You
I had my surgery in a hospital with a very aggressive physical therapy program the day after surgery.
Thanks again for your videos,
I am glad you found the channel as well. Thanks for sharing.
I did pre surgery exercises and they really have helped with my post op therapy and recovery
Accurate timeline...5 weeks in...walking pretty much normally -- once I work out some daily stiffness. I have overdone on it on good days and had swelling the next day. All in all, still feels and function better now than before surgery.
That's awesome. Sounds like you are doing great for 5+ weeks.
What was the machine please?
What water exercises did you do?
Very helpful and encouraging. Thank You. I am 12 days postop and managing quite well. Jan (UK)
Keep us posted. Glad you are doing well.
2nd being a replacement of the 1st, or the other knee?

Hi Tony
I'm 4 months out now from surgery. Thanks for all you do! I've sent your link to a friend who just had his surgery. Keep up the good work 👏
Hi Peggy, thanks so much for your continued support!
I am from India. My father had tkr surgery on 16th dec 2021. He is suffering from intolerable pain at night. When this pain will reduce? Plz tell
I'm scheduled May 5th. Doing a few stretches. What exercises would you suggest to do before the surgery?
I’m at the 4 month mark, and feel stuck in progress. Ongoing pain and stiffness. My flexion is great- 135 with extension at 0. But, still unmanageable to walk or do light tasks without pain and discomfort. Hoping at some point this improves. Right now I feel worse off than I did with my “bad knee” before surgery. 😢
Thank you for being there for be available for questions. That helps when pt is finished and you still need it.
Great review. Very helpful! Thanks!

Thanks so much for the comments. Always feel free to ask questions as things progress.
I’m so glad you said that. I’m almost 3 weeks out and just now able to lift my leg by myself i have a Walker still. He had me sweating bullets
I was exactly the same
I had my right TKR a year ago March 8, 2021 and I am still in a lot of discomfort.

@@Andrea-hs1zk I'm sure she means the other knee on the opposite leg.
Thank you so much👍😀

Thank you Tony. So reassuring and informative. I’m grateful. 🙏🏼
Hi sir thanks a lot i have both knee surgery at same time already 8 weeks but still I have stiff ness and right knee is hard to pull during exercises I am doing lot of exercises recommend by my hospital therapist.
thank you 🙏🙏☘️
Anthony, I am a right Total knee replacement patient 2 weeks post op.
You sound like my therapist.
Sandy
Thank you, so much!
You are very welcome.
Thank you for a clear explanation! At 4 weeks post op, how much time on my feet can I do? If it 20 mins…then how much rest in between 20 min. Segments? Thank you!
Thank you for this very well documented information! Covid has me isolated post surgery...I needed this!
@Roger Starkweather: how are you doing today? (7/9) I am scheduled for the 14th!
How are you doing now? Are you getting out? How is the knee doing?
You are almost a month PO. How did your surgery go?
Same here. Covid really hurt me not getting pt at the most important times due to not being able to find a place that wasn’t closed down.
@@MrKeyman04 That sucks! Excuse my language, but it does. I’m pre-op, and trying to learn all about this! I hope you’re feeling better everyday & not letting “setbacks” discourage you!
I am finally getting to drive without it bothering me. Thanks for videos and encouragement.
Hi Darlene!!! It has been a very busy summer and I have not had time to manage this channel like I should. Good to hear you are progressing.
@@totaltherapysolutions I sure appreciate what you do show us. Thanks for caring!
Unfortunately at 7 weeks Ive been in the hospital twice. I got blood clots. I don’t feel I am progressing well at all. Constantly in pain. Not sleeping well at all.
Thank you so much. I now know how I can help my sister with her TKR.
I wish you and her the best.
Thanks Tony very good video
Day 2 it really hurts I like your video hope i can keep up
So so well said the goal is to be better than you were ever

I had a total knee replacement 8 years ago on my right knee. On November 9 getting a knee replacement on my left knee
Keep us posted.
At the age of 70 l had double total knee replacement. After a period of five weeks, l was off of all pain meds and feeling great. Now, after two years, l don't even think about it. It was life changing.
You are simply awesome!!!
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for the great information!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for all great information. 😊
Thanks for the kind words!
The information on this vedio is very correct .The way you have explained is exactly the same way happening ng to me .
Great video after a year of surgery due to a injury that turned to sepsis and loosing my knee I just got my new knee and looking forward to recovery
Thanks a lot,Sìr.U have explained the time period for recovery from a total knee replacement surgery in a very simple way. God bless you .
It is not always people of “grandparent” age. I have had 2 TKR . I am 50. Age does not define when a TKR is needed.
How did you do?
Thanks Tony, spot in as always 😁
Hi Tony, I’m 5 weeks post operation after a bilateral knee replacement. I’ve had to do this from the very beginning without the use of opioids so it’s been a real challenge.
Since I started physical therapy I feel as if my progress is two steps forward then one step backward.
What bothers me most is the low grade pain starting in my knee’s and radiating into my hips to my lower back, especially at night. Lord I hope this ache ends soon, I’m thoroughly sick and tired of it… Anyway thanks for your video…All the best to you!
What did u do for pain relief? I can't imagine the discomfort & level of pain. I'm 3 weeks post op.
Comforting for my pre-surgery jitters. Thanks!
Back to easy cross country skiing at 3 weeks ...... just a few kilometers .... 5-8 km
Thank u for your advice I just came out of the hospital after 7 days
