I see it like a chicken and an egg situation. Like maybe since SUVs are becoming more and more of pretty much the only option, no wonder people are buying them! And then automakers go, oh look everyone's buying SUVs, let's make more SUVs!
I think the "SUV-only"-view is very American, but it's swapped over to Europe too. I don't think all people necessarily want SUVs, since they have a certain reputation for being mostly unnecessary big, dangerous for pedestrians, gas guzzling and just anti-social (the large ones in particular), but automakers are making more money with them as they present them as something "cool" and "new" or "different" and thats what make people buy them, even if they would be great in a hatchback, minivan or sedan/wagon too. Sedans were never so popular in Europe, but hatchbacks always were, and killing cars like the Ford Focus or Fiesta in favor of SUVs is just stupid. They will never sell as many Kugas or Pumas or whatever they slapped the Capri name on than those. As an enthusiast, SUVs are the new minivan and just plain boring cars for non-car people. Wonder if that's gonna change in the future, if people in 10 years see SUVs as cars for old and boring people.
I doubt it. Minivans didn't infiltrate every sector of the market like SUVs have. Even niche brands like Lotus, Ferrari, Aston Martin make them. And for many brands they are the highest sellers. They come in all sorts of different body shapes, sizes, price points, and they are desirable for people from all walks of life. We really are just going back to car philosophy of the 20s, 30s, ans 40s. Look at car from that era. They looks like CUVs of today more than sedans. Sedans I think have embraced the sportiness appeal too much. They are very low. With low roofs and cramped back seats thanks to the sloping roof. I think it becomes like the coupe vs sedan. Eventually people just thought sedans were more useful. Even if they didnt need back seats or rear doors. And now people are thinking CUVs are more useful.
@@baronvonjo1929 maybe, but I'm really not sure. In crowded cities in Europe a SUV doesn't make a whole lotta sense. But by no longer offering small cars, people have to buy SUVs. And manufacturers present them as something cool and modern, and want more money for it. Not sure if that trend will live forever, maybe even politics are intervening. Already happened in big cities like Paris and some German cities, and it will likely continue
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 Many SUVs are the same size as hatchbacks and sedans though? My families 2016 Camry is longer and physically takes up more space than my buddies 2011 Highlander. Yet the Highlander can sit 7 and is much more comfortable and useful. It really depends on the models in question and some cars might be shorter but wider. Using the argument about size dosent really hold up in my eyes unless we talk about the largest of SUVs. But even then many sedans are just are large like the S Class.
About CARB (CA Air Resources Board) the reason passing smog in CA is so difficult for older cars that are newer than 1975 is not just passing the tailpipe test and the computer test (for OBD 1 and 2 vehicles), but it’s the third thing, the visual test. If you have parts on your car not approved for use in CA, they will fail you; actually they won’t even test you. So even if your car is running 1000x cleaner than it used to because you upgraded your 1980 car to use modern day tech, CARB says no, they want your car polluting like it did in 1980. Like the podcast was talking about, these old original emissions parts are hard to find or simply not available anymore. And parts companies that sometimes make these aftermarket parts can’t sell them in CA because they would have to pay CARB to use them in CA, which 99% of parts manufactures don’t do because the mafia fee is too expensive for the ROI. So CARB is effectively making the environment worse because they make old cars perform like old cars. Let’s not even get into the pollution created for manufacturing a whole new car vs driving an existing older car. It’s not about emissions, it’s about making money. Also Kennan could literally remove emissions parts from his vehicle, the vehicle could run cleaner because it’s performing better by way of cleaner fuel, better A/F ratio by a tune, better catalytic converters, and he’d still fail smog because of missing emissions equipment. The whole this is a joke. And the rolling 30 year smog exception which used to help these old cars was repealed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was in office if you’re looking for someone to blame on that.
This is not a good take. There are not that many cars from the 80s. There are a LOT of cars from the last decade. Almost all cars are from the last 15 years. CARB is about numbers. Emissions is all about the numbers. The millions of cars. For what it's worth, I drive a V8 that is completely CARB legal. It gets me 15 mpg and is still better for emissions than the folks who remove emissions controls from their 40 mpg diesels because what is emitted is important... That's the point of CARB
@@RahulShah87 did you even read my comment? What I’m explaining is, even if your car passes emissions or far exceeds emissions standards, CA will still fail you if you use non-CARB approved parts. For example Kenan’s BMW M5 was designed to use a different kind of fuel. If he tuned his car to be more fuel efficient with a better a/f ratio resulting in a cleaner burn, CA would still fail him because of his tune because it’s not CARB approved. Not getting CARB approval does not mean the parts don’t help emissions, it means the parts companies didn’t pay CARB for their approval. This is why aftermarket parts are legal in 49 other states because CA requires you to pay CARB directly to sell the parts in CA.
28:33 this is why I’m so nitpicky on cars & bids when it comes to timing belts. So many people differ that maintenance on their interference engine vehicles! It’s mind boggling ! The belt can become a ticking time bomb if left unchanged and people snap them constantly on the way to the mechanic or on the way home from buying the car ALL THE TIME. Yet people on auction sites and market place are not only so ignorant about it but they also are so blasé and just assume it will be fine. No, it will blow your engine. It’s ridiculous.

"Escalade has a feature where you can set different stereo volume for the driver and passenger" oh Doug, this is the stereo equalizer thing all over again - cars have had this feature for decades, it's called a fader
7:50 I feel like North America is the only continent were people choose either an SUV, Pickup Truck or Sportscar to drive. In other countires wagons, hatchbacks, sedans are in their prime.
I'm fairly certain pickups but smaller are very very popular in South America, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The Toyota Hilux is a huge seller. Nearly 600,000 units globally. That puts its in the top 15 most sold cars in the world. Maybe top 10. Also I think in the case of the US we dont like wagons or hatchbacks but the body is more practical than a sedan. I ask random people and they find hatchbacks dorky and weird and wagons just ugly. I had a Honda Fit and NOBODY liked it. Nobody could take it seriously. So when people actually need space what is the only option? SUVs, minivans, and trucks. They don't find them as unattractive. Sedans low roof line, low ground clearance, little back seat amenities for families/passengers in the rear, impractical trunk are really hurting them. All you get in even the largest sedans is a back seat with some cup holders possibly. Maybe some vents if you pay for the highest trim level. Sedans don't offer anything to buyers. You can get a CUV for the same price as large midsize sedans with significantly more features and creature comforts.
Well with the internet and American influence those countries are being shifted towards SUVs and trucks these brands treat those countries as extras so if they're absolutely racking it in with SUVs they're gonna push them onto those countries too
@@seanharrison6162 Not true. At least in my opinion. The American brands don't particularly have good global reputations and are in decline except maybe Tesla. It's brands competing in China and going off with what makes sense for the global portfolio. Also their home markets. I don't really see how American influence can play a role much longer when many of our most favorite models aren't popular elsewhere in the world. I believe it's wrong to assume other cultures and counties aren't capable of their own agency in what models fit their purposes. If a model is popular in the US and elsewhere like the Corolla or RAV4 then it's shows it's simply a good product to people.
@baronvonjo1929 not American brands but American trends like Toyota's disappointing SUVs, nissan killing sedans almost all performance cars being neutered. And the other countries these cars get to just have to deal with that even though it's not there preference
As a American, I wish we had more sedans and hatchbacks available. I feel like the demand for these SUV’s and Crossovers isn’t as high as people think, the manufacturers are just shoving them down our throats.
The ignorance regarding the RB17 was painful. Red Bull Technologies already developed the Valkyrie and components for other manufacturers. And they’ve won 7 (soon 8) championships which puts them on terms with Mercedes in terms of racing pedigree. Also completely ignored the F1 laptimes which is the entire point of the car 💀
@@KayJblue yeah, there was a great interview on top gear (?) some days ago with Adrian about the design. Going from F1 into track car like this seems legit.
I think what people don't realize about driving an SUV, or truck, is that they make driving a lot more work, and the ride is always worse than a car(generally). Small crossovers are better, but still buck like a horse compared to cars. They make it more work because you have to park them everywhere you go, and in modern lots it's not only harder to find a spot they fit, but maneuvering them is more difficult because seeing out the sides while backing up, and with the bigger they are you may be making a three point turn. I don't think people realize how these vehicles literally suck the life out of you...
About smog, I've read about Volvo nuts building hot 240, out in California, hunting for rolling 1975 chassis to make their cars. They'll do engine swaps, or big turbos and update the exterior to look like an 80s 240. Because the VIN is of a 1975 Volvo 242, it doesn't matter what they've done. Helps that the car was around for nearly 20 years.
The ‘market’ isn’t choosing screens. They’re tolerating them because they’re forced to. Screens are cheaper. That’s it. Screens are a huge distraction and an ergonomic disaster. A single screen to display navigation, entertainment and camera data is all we need. All the options are a profit center, not an enhancement.
People aren’t really against screens, they are against every common feature being 4 button presses deep in the menu. I dont need a stupid slider for my interior lighting, but i shouldnt have to go menu, climate, seat, on, on, and on for the max seat temp.
I don’t mind a screen but I have caveats. If it’s something I will likely want to adjust while the vehicle is moving (a/c, heated seats, music, traction control, driver modes, etc) it must either be a physical button, or a button on the home page of the touch screen which is so large it can’t possibly be missed. This was how Subaru fixed not having a physical heated seat button and I have no issues with it. Any other settings or tweaks can be locked behind whatever menus you want.
I believe the reason why that Red Bull car is called the RB17 is because it was the name of an unused chassis for the Red Bull F1 team. It went unused due to the pandemic. I also think Red Bull will be able to sell most or all of these RB17s, especially if you're the kind of person who'd take your cars out on track. Besides, even with the insane price tag, who wouldn't want a car with a naturally aspirated V10 that revs up to 15,000 RPM and is built by Cosworth? I also think that Lanzante can make the RB17 road-legal because we have cars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which was made in partnership with Red Bull and is arguably the closest thing to an F1 car for the road. So if Aston Martin was able to pull something like this off so can Lanzante with the RB17.

The newest vehicle I own is a 2006. It’s not my cup of tea, but I can see the argument for screens in something like an Escalade. I think most enthusiasts don’t want those screens in something like a 911, or an M3/4.
On the screen debate - I think a mix is good. Frequently used items - radio volume, hvac - should be buttons and knobs. Everything else can go in a screen. This should be a human factors study, not opinions . They should be studying the impact of having to use screens for radio, HVAC, and other frequently adjusted controls versus knobs.

The California exemption did roll forward twice. Year 1 was 1998, and the exemption was 25 years old and older: the 1973 model year. In '99, the exemption rolled into the '74s, and in '00, the '75s. In 2000 the Democratic Legislature froze the exemption at that level, and that's why '75 is the year.
Isn’t the Aston Martin Valkyrie a collab with Red Bull, street legal, and with a Cosworth engine. Interesting that they are making a similar version. AMRB-001.
The problem with screens, all screens, is that in 10 years they will be horribly out dated. In 20+ they'll be laughable. I like having a GPS in the gauge cluster, but I'd honestly prefer analog, as it's much more timeless. Rolls Royce seems to understand
They will keep making small numbered high performance NA engines for extremely rich people. Just like mechanical high end watches. That is the point Bugatti made with the tourbillon.
I dont see why anyone would be sad the Altima is dying. But I am confused by it. Its sales are definitely in freefall from its peak but it still sales over 100k units. I dont really understand why they want to axe it. The Nissan Kicks has a lower less profitable price and sells significantly less yet they made a new generation for it recently.
Doug building a text book strawman on the buttons/screen argument. Doug, people who want buttons/knobs do not want them for the ambient light LEDs, we want buttons/knobs for the basic and common functions!! All those other extra functions are ok hidden in some menu on a screen, anyway most people won't ever know about them or care.

Apparently the RB17 is basically going to be a 2-seater F1 car that can match or beat F1 car lap times around most tracks, but with a passenger. From an engineering perspective, it's pretty cool. But I doubt any of the owners rich enough to buy them have even 1/10th of the required skill to pilot it at that pace. Like buying a Hellcat for an old lady that drives 10 under all the way to church and back.
12:54 "Brand new V10" "I thought development on stuff like this was long gone" The issue here is a disconnect between understanding of road cars and racing cars. 😂😂😂😂 You just described my 6 year old.
5:58 people aren’t demanding it; it’s just that people will buy whatever is new and shiny (even if not a great product)
Your gross generalizations of SUVs is incredibly naïve.
I feel for Kennan. I put my beloved 996 into a wall on the track. I’m putting about 1/2 the value into repairs this week.

Dougie is baked.
These convos and laughters will never get old 😂
7:50 I feel like North America is the only continent were people choose either an SUV, Pickup Truck or Sportscar to drive.
45:02 😂 next quiz that should be Kennan's buzzer
Doug's the type of guy to say his deeply closeted friend came out years ago.
Haha! " This is a much more subtle, pretty car, you oaf!" Kennan's refined language...
More Colleen please! Her knowledge on cars is phenomenal and I love her videos!
OMG COLLEEN IS ON THE POD! 😍
My notifications needed to be switch on right now. Ive miss a lot of nicest live.
Doug the matchmaker
I don’t mind a screen but I have caveats. If it’s something I will likely want to adjust while the vehicle is moving (a/c, heated seats, music, traction control, driver modes, etc) it must either be a physical button, or a button on the home page of the touch screen which is so large it can’t possibly be missed. This was how Subaru fixed not having a physical heated seat button and I have no issues with it. Any other settings or tweaks can be locked behind whatever menus you want.
When Doug get extra goofy he's still amazing.
I've definitely seen videos of this Aspark Owl thing. It's not entirely vapor ware, but it may not make it to full production.
Additionally Red Bull was powered by Honda, but they pulled out of F1 and Red Bull became an engine manufacturer.

Kennan is such a good listen.
"Naturally Aspirated" means breathing. Electric cars don't need to take in air to generate power.

Kennan and Colleen! Who needs Emily?
Everyone needs to watch Doug’s review of the Pagani Huayra.. watch him praise it for its absolute gorgeous interior with its IP that looks like it was designed by a Swiss watch maker(paraphrasing his words). He belittles the Lamborghini Countach in a review I watched this week.. I believe it’s the orange AMG GT review. And as far as the LFA… Jeremy Clarkson says it’s the best car he’s ever driven. Doug says he cares more about the experience of driving. He says he likes single clutch transmissions for the mechanical feel. So I’m going to take a gander that Doug says he doesn’t like the LFA because it’s the 1 car that sounds more incredible than his Carrera GT. For the same reason he claims he doesn’t like the 918 Spyder.
The LFA sounds better and the 918 looks better.

I had an internship at a company that had an Aspark Owl carbon composite chassis floating around our factory that we worked on. So it definitely sorta kinda exists!
1:09:55 I think Kennan meant "perpetuated".
AMRB-001.
That Red Bull car is why Newey should go to Aston and design a road car for the people.
The problem with screens, all screens, is that in 10 years they will be horribly out dated. In 20+ they'll be laughable. I like having a GPS in the gauge cluster, but I'd honestly prefer analog, as it's much more timeless. Rolls Royce seems to understand

12:54 "Brand new V10" "I thought development on stuff like this was long gone"
The issue here is a disconnect between understanding of road cars and racing cars.
At the top level of motorsport every engine is under CONSTANT development, any given car manufacturer can make any given configuration of engine on any given day, the only reason this car has a V10 is because Newey asked for it.
