After all of these years would love to see how you still feel about the bk 16 and any new competitors that you might suggest
I second this
For those on a budget, I stipple the scales on all of my BK knives using a woodburning tool with a small point, and then sanding with high grit sandpaper. The pattern you choose is limited only by your imagination, and it improves the grip of these slick scales incredibly. Too bad youtube doesn't allow pictures in the comments, or I'd show you some of mine to give you an idea.
Hope this helps.
boomstickman71 you can upload your picture elsewhere and post a url
A tip that I found worked well when stripping the coating is to only strip the blade. Leave the coating on the handle section and then you won’t have to worry about rust under the scales.
I did the same
That's what i was thinking
Great tip! I should have done that, but smear some vaseline on the metal then put the scales back on. Vaseline will not evaporate and protects it well.
Why strip the coating at all? Is it a fashion thing?
@@thomas-son9281 The coating that comes on them, at least on the ones I’ve had, was quite rough and to me actually hindered cutting quite a bit. In addition, because it was rough, it wore very quickly and honestly didn’t look very good. Other brands have much better coatings that are smooth and hold up better.
stripped mine and used gun blue on the blade. love the look of it now! also for the grips I slid a piece of bicycle inner tube over the grip. works like a champ! bought this knife a couple of years ago now after watching your and preparedmind101's video. this and my BK9 are my go to blades now. Becker knocked it out of the park with those two knives.
I left my BK16 alone, I just took some ABS tubing (grey) in 1/16” thick and formed my own custom sheath. My buddy bought that BK16 and both sheaths from me. I bought a BK2 (have 2 of them now in each vehicle). My BK2 was stripped completely and gun blued. It’s my Tacoma truck (SHTF) knife. I took the factory GFN sheath and drilled out the rivets to replace that flimsy belt hanger with a chunk of scuba tank belt nylon. Now my vehicle BK2’s have bombproof sheaths. Life is good. Cheers
I have some good gun blue and that's a great idea. Heating the steel first especially makes the gun blue do a great job. I've etched big knives (kukris) with hot vinegar which stinks up the whole house, as well as ferric chloride which is super strong, but like the idea of a blued blade better.
I just did this process with my BK 2 looks awesome! Thank you for this video it really helped!
By far my favorite mod I've done to mine is to rub down the micarta handle scales with saddle oil (neatsfoot oil). It gives the scales a nice rich, deep brown color that I like a lot more than the plain canvas.
Thanks. Great review. Just got my BK16 a few minutes ago. Love it!!!
I took your advice for my BK16. I robbed the micarta scales off my BK17, removed the coating and did the forced patina. The AZWelke kydex sheath is fantastic. What a difference and an improvement. Then I ordered TKC G10 scales for my BK17. Now I have two really nice looking and functional blades. I was surprised at how much more I like the BK16 with the coating removed.
I did the same think with my BK15 and my BK7. I did a hot vinegar patina and the 15 came out almost as dark as the original coating. BTW, I like the XDm. I've had 3 so far and all were great sidearms.
Great review and work on the blade. Been thinking about adding a BK16 to one of my systems, thanks for the video. Keep it up!
Great video, Aaron. I couldn't agree more - the BK16 is definitely a knife worthy of a little love and attention to turn something already good into something even better.
My bk2, bk7, bk16 all came out great. And yes, they all slice veggies and meat way better now.
Your videos have pointed me in the right direction on more than one occasion. Thanks.
Did the same mods on my bk16 love it! Also bought a esee4 for about $70.00 less . Ended up with two pretty much identical knives. Doesn't matter I'm keeping them both.
I plan on doing the same thing. In addition I'm thinking of using Rit dye on the handle scales and either a reddish/pink or zombie green scale liners.
These are such awesome knives, and so easy to improve our customize. I personally opted for a BK15, stripped the nasty coating and forced a patina, swapped in stainless steel bolts (which match the patina better too), made my own wood scales mimicking the form of the originals, and added a Ka-bar leather sheath with a ferro rod attached on the side.
+Chris Alder Nice!
Fantastic video! I've got the BK16 and those Becker micarta scales, and I've been thinking about other ways to improve the knife overall before I go camping for a month. Great information!
I've never thought of the BK16, but after this video, I want one now! Though I must say, having the Gerber strongarm for a little while, the more I use it, the more I love it. I did strip the coating off on my Tops Condor Alert, forced a petina on it, since that was over a year ago, its developing that natural patina giving it a very unique look and remains after heavy use. Good video Aaron, keep on rockin brother!
Thx for watching friend
I love my bk16 but here's my "on a budget" tip...
I take the scales off and scuff them with 80 or 60 grit sandpaper. It changes the surface texture enough that they are no longer slippery at all... and they feel almost like micarta. On one of my 16s I also took a dremel tool and added a random lines... it came out looking like alligator or something... it was completely accidental and experimental but came out really cool looking and feels amazing!
Hey, would it be possible to upload a picture and provide a link?
Love my AZWELKE sheath for my BK16. I have a tek-lok on mine. Been planning to do a forced patina on it, just haven't carved out the time to do it. When I did it on my BK15, I left the coating under the scales to protect them and did a two stage forced patina, using blue painters tape to create a tiger stripe effect. I wrapped the blade in white vinegar soaked paper towel. Be aware if you use paper towel and it has a pattern or texture to it, it will come out in the patina. I got lucky and it created a really cool effect that complemented the tiger stripes.Haven't decided, but I may do the tiger stripe on my BK16 as well.
Good video. I enjoyed it and learned.
Great detailed tutorial on stripping the coating!
Love what you've done with the knife. Thanks for the discount code PEACE :-)
i love mine.. stripped the blade and mirror polished it got a carbon fiber kydex sheath and black and orange tiger striped micarta handle scales... i left the coating on the handle of mine and on the jimping figured it would add grip and protect under the scales from rust.
Love that video and the concept!! Bk16 is an amazing companion blade!!!
Very nice. I need to do this to my bk14. Might need to pick up a bk16 as well 😊
Came to the same conclusion a couple years ago, BK16, Azwelke sheath, Micarta scales, and have never looked back!
Sweet!

LOL that's funny this was my first project knife. Stripped the coating, sharpened the spine to a 90, clothed it in a Yellow Hawk custom kydex. Firesteel, mini light, s-biner, molle clip set to a 45 degree cross draw.
would love to see more vids of you using the bk16 for woodcraft and camping.
Stripped off the funky blk paint, added the factory micarta scales in tan. Working up a badass leather sheath... Grinding the spine next.
Love this knife set up exactly as recommended, well done brother
The Perfect Companion Knife
I just took the coating off the blade portion left it on the handle portion so that I never have to worry about rust under the micarta as it will hold moisture some.
Excellent choice! I don't know hat your experience with the Klean Strip spray was, but the spray tip clogged on me really bad, I got partway through my second project before it clogged beyond repair. I use the quart bottle now, it works great. The Micarta is what makes this knife shine. Now that I'm retired and away from Alaska where I felt no room for mistakes in my equipment, I've retired my Busse Badger and I'm using my Busse 16. If something happens that I lose it (or give it away to someone, which is usually what happens) I feel better about losing a $100 knife than a $400 one.
how long does this patina last in terms of protecting the blade ?
Is the patina superior at rust prevention than coating ?
also do you need to oil it often after the patina ?
The micarta scales and kydex sheath combo is all class. Very nice setup.
How would you go about attaching a knife to riding pants/boots?
Thx for the vid. Looks great.
Thanks my friend!
Just for an fyi (idk price diff between azwelke and the bk18) but the bk18 kydex sheath fits the bk16 perfectly bc they use the same tang and scales and the retention point is on the end of the scales. I saw it in a vid on YT channel name is “knife video channel” just search bk16 bk18 if you wanna see yourself.
Which belt loop option are you showing on that sheath? Is it the Kydex/Leather hybrid. I've done several of these mods to my BK16 and am just missing the sheath at this point. Great job!
Nice mods Aaron, and thanks for sharing! 👍
Great mods for this knife. Thanks for sharing
What an awesome video! Great info. Nice job!
I bought one of these, stripped the coating, acid etched it, blued it and gave it to my wife as a companion blade for her 7" Ka-Bar Fighting knife!
any affordable compact binoculars you've reviewed or recommend?
Most Excellent! Thanks!
If your going to wrap the handle, go to a sporting goods store and get Hockey stick grip wrap. Very durable and made for extreme weather. If you live in a hot climate, get Tennis racket grip tape. Or go to a bike shop, see if they have any old inner tubes that are small diameter, and make ranger bands. Or, yes another "Or" wrap the handle with para-cord, if your good at that. Just some idea's from an old knife collector.
Man, very nice video! Thank you!
Great video! I've done all these mods but used citrus strip which gave it a mild patina. I may go back and do the apple cider vinegar because that looks good on yours. You can also use a rat tail file to do the spine if you don't have access to a belt sander. I also plan to order a stainless steel screw set to change out the stock ones.
Awesome!
Really nice setup, Aaron !
I got a bk 24 and the black nylon scales and a custom sheath to clip onto my backpack strap
Awesome video man I have always wanted to have a BK Becker but never got the chance but know I think I will! You are a very skilled man keep up the great work brother!
Thank you so much for the support! You will love the BK16.
Cool video. I have the BK17, and did similar upgrades - it's like a different knife. Question on the stripping of the blade coating - won't that affect the fit of the scales, and then the kydex sheath?
Wont affect either. I'd recommend giving the blade a patina afterwards.
do all bk 2 s come with a full flat grind amd how about the bk16s do those all come with the full flat grind all the pics on amazon show saber grind please help me
Ka-bar has 50% off, so I finally got the knife I've wanted.BK16 and micarta scales. $104.00. Keep up the great reviews Aaron
nice knife.. i am considering a gso tho.. but maybe until they fill orders..
Gideon, how does the vinegar patina do with rust prevention? Is it better or worse than the factory coating in this? Thanks for the great video!
I did the same with the bk 18 but i boiled the ac vinegar first. Very dark and beautiful patina. I added red g10 spacers….
This was a damn nice video,it really changed my opinion of the ka-bar Becker blades.
Just gave it a go, she's come out sweet. The stainless screws make it look well tricked out
So all this time I’ve been using knifes wrong 😀 in my opinion, a 4-6 inch knife is more than capable to potentially be a “only knife option” depending on your skills and physical capabilities/conditions. I’ve built entire bushcraft camps with a saw and mora garberg… anyway that’s my input.. more skills less tools. Love the videos brother!
Plus the 1095 cv holds an edge longer and is slightly more rust resistant.
Nice video! question, the handle are the original Becker Micarta? did you use the serial screws or do you have to change them for longer? the new handle is thicker than the standard handle? Thanks!!!
Thanks for the tip on the Azwelke kydex sheath web site!
I have a question, I must choose with 3 knives for bushcrafting, there are 1. Mora Garberg; 2. Real steel Bushcrafter Plus survival; 3. Ka-Bar BK16. which you prefer for bushcraft an also universal works? thansk.
i would change the screws and bolts too, they rust so easily. You can get some stainless on ebay for nada nothing.
Dag Ut totally agree. This is the most important mod and should be listed first. You can get the nuts and bolts at any major hardware store, as well.
What are the sizes
Nice job thanks
Hi. So which one you choose? BK16, ESEE 4, TOPS HOG 4.5???
Enjoyed your video thank you best wishes.
When using the vinegar to add patina, could one theoretically add food coloring to give the blade a slight hue?
I myself have not tried this, but i was wondering if it could do this.....
Or if anyone knows how to add a slight coloration hue to a blade, input would be greatly appreciated...
Not sure on that one!
I'm digging the knife mods GT. Keep em coming!
Will do!
Would you recommend the okc rat 7??
Excellent video gideonstactical. To quote everyone's favorite Lt. Col., carrying around your Becker BK16 is without a doubt, 2nd kind of cool!
Ya buddy!
What is the difference between BK-16 and BK-2 they look pretty much the same?
lovely looking blade. but buying that knife and doing those up-grades costs a fortune in the UK. the knife alone is around £100s. have done similar stripping and patina on my cs tomahawks. sooo much fun.
Awesome possum! Your modded B16 is the "bee's knees". Gotta get me one!
i am a boyscout. last year i got a schrade schf36, but its just so darn heavy. i need a companion knife to do chopping and batoning, but be lightweight to. is this a good blade?
yes but there are others. i miss my scout days. have fun and enjoy, the time flies by bud!
The scales make a huge difference. Plus, it looks great!
Also, replace the Allen screws with stainless philips
I also invested in the g10 scales. They dont soak up bacteria, dirt, blood, etc.
do you know if the knife is easy to sharpen
Gonna try this with my bk2
Great job Aaron.
I like both Beckers and Esee and others, I usually carry the Esee 4 and it's even my EDC blade. This video has made me wanna get the BK16....
Good Video GT
Thanks so much!
GREAT video. What knife would be better for a beginner. The BK 16 or a SOG SEAL PUP for a girl. Also what knife would be better for a week hiking trip in the mountains? The BK 16 or the Esee 4.
Matthew Overacre BK16 or ESEE 4. ESEE has a better warranty, but I don't think it'll matter for the price difference. You'd have to intentionally break them, almost. You're more likely to lose it than break it. I have both, love both, can't go wrong with either. I have SEAL pup also, it's a combat knife. Not a camp knife.
ei Aaron, do you have a review of the Cudeman MT-5? It would be nice to have your opinions on it. thank you God bless. :)
Have you had a chance to use a Condor Crotalus? Just curious how it compares to BK16. They are almost identical on paper.
Not really identical. Cotalus: 5.5" blade, 1075 steel, 0.19" thick, 10oz. BK16: 4.3" blade, 1095 crovan steel, 0.14" thick, 7oz. Big difference.
Agree perfectly well with regards to the ergo, size, weight and price. Have a collection of expensive knives but always go back to the BK-16. Another great review by Aaron! Mabuhay, from the Philippines!
Sweet! Thanks my friend
+gideonstactical Have you ever considered reviewing the Tops Dawn Warrior? Can't seem to find a lot of in depth info (unlike the ones you provide) in UA-cam about the knife. Although I've never handled it yet, it looks very cool in terms of the things you advocate in a knife. Ergos and all that stuff.
I went to knife center and found where you can put together an Esee 4 custom. I chose the blade, then the custom ergonomic micharta handle scales, and then went on another site and found a custom kydex sheath for it. All that plus shipping was $120. It’s my baby. It lives in my survival bag.
Is it possible to strip the tops black river wash coating off your blade?
Not sure, you could call and ask them.
What do you field sharpen with these days?
Great video man. love my bk16.Does the Stripper used to remove the black coating make the steel unsafe for food prep?
If you wash it and the vinaigrette you should be good
Thanks Aaron!
Here's my mod to my bk16,
thanks for your videos I bought this off of your recommendation
Great video I bought the Esee 4 and love it but wish I had seen this before I bought it. It might have changed my mind. I did want to ask though, I know you weren't crazy about the handle ergos on the 4, if you purchased some custom scales for the 4 that made the handle longer and more ergonomic how do you think that would compare to the custom BK-16?
And then took off the coating like you did with the bk-16 as well?
I am not a fan of choil on sub 5" cutting edged knives, and the bk16 has a thinner blade so over all I think the bk16 will preform better for me.
what hoodie are you wearing?
thanks for the helpful video
I need to do this to all my bk knives
A tip that will make a huge difference, unrelated to the great info. you just shared with everyone. I have a machine shop and spend a lot of time slightly bent over tables I'm working off of. after years, developing back issues from that I raised all my tables 3" and my back is locked out with correct posture now. I am average at 5'11" , not as tall as you. even people who are shorter, like this. its always better to bend your elbows and not your back. people, other then me start noticing their kitchen counters are too short LOL. I'm not the only one who likes this, everyone who comes and plays in my shop comments on it and a couple of my friends have been doing this with their tables also. This is really a game changer. I just notices you were hunched over your table in the garage and wanted to share that tid bit, you might like it. Even for you 3" would make a huge difference and it shouldn't make anything more difficult for your kids if they do projects with you. You might have a tall chair for them anyway. I have a few of those around. I have a niece that spends a lot of time in the shop with me. I hope you try it, I think you'll really like it
I can vouch for Al Welke...great sheaths!
I have a BK7 that I still use, hasn't had a single problem yet. (45 degree attachment to partially hide the knife)
Not sure about the synthetic sheath.Common wisdom I grew up with championed defaulting to leather for optimal protection against moisture. Thoughts?
Started this process with my BK12 but I never finished. I should get around to that.
Ya bro!
Cyrrently working on my axe project.
As much as I like micarta if your on a budget you could spend less than an hour and do some light stippling on the scales to improve traction. If you have a woodburner or soldering iron and the cost is free. Also Ethan Becker doesn't like the coarse coating either and he suggests very lite sanding with 400 grit sandpaper. Sand just enough to take out the grit turns out slick and still a good amount of coating. Unless light discipline is an issue for you I prefer uncoated and buildup a patina.
+Paul Snyder Both are definitely options but the Talon grips can be a bit pricey and I don't wear gloves so for me skateboard tape is a bit aggressive. Even hockey tape or racquet tape would give more grip without abrading your hand.
