The Kilo 9 books are fucking awesome and it really just makes the handling of Halo by 343 even worse. Jul 'Mdama's a fascinating character and all the stuff they set up with Halsey being a scapegoat for ONI authorizing the SPARTAN program in the first place but all of that is let down by the games.
In one of my favorite D&D games I got to play in, we were on a spelljammer and needed to take out an elf base that was heavily defended from the ground. The way we did it was to give our Dwarf paladin a ring of feather fall, a helm that let him breath in space, and a cape of fireproofing. Then we dropped him from orbit. We named the order that was founded after him the ODSTs. For orbital dwarf shock troops!
Oddly, enough there is actually a common magical item in Eberron that basically combines all of that into one thing for the purposes of dropping people from ships...there was an entire part of the old "Living" campaign that used them for semi-military deployments.
God bless Heinlien or whoever first gave us the trope of dropping soldiers from orbit. Its just so damn cool and there is a reason why its been so popular in sci fi
The ICARUS troop transport was a real proposal for a giant rocket that would carry 12,000 troops from thr ground, to orbit, and then land them anywhere on earth within an hour. It never happened because it would have been insanely expensive, and the US already having friendly bases all over the world and a huge navy to travel between them was seen as being good enough.

Halo odst will always have a special place in my heart for being my first halo game and being my first person shooter game such a great story and characters.still mad at 343 for killing rookie in a fucking book
The first time I’ve was exposed to the trope of sci fi soldiers in drop pods was Tiberian Sun, GDI had drop pods as a special ability in that game. I think the codified was Starship Troopers (the novel,) and obviously 40K space marines have it too, but I think the OFSTs are the most memorable incarnation as things currently stand. Helldivers may overtake them if it keeps up this momentum, but the satirical tone of the game makes for a different feel, and hell, they’re standing on the shoulders of giants anyway
Elite soldiers dropping into war from above is an idea as old as the first man to throw themselves out of a perfectly good plane with a parachute and rifle to their chest. Its only expanded on since then.
In Halo 3, I always tried to keep the ODSTs alive for as long as possible. I also usually gave the officer (the guy with red markings) a power weapon or something. Always felt good if they made it to the end of the level with me.
Before helldivers, we had the ODST. Before the ODST we had starship troopers. Man, the mobile infantry is such a good idea, such a scarily destructive idea, that it will never get its time on the silver screen or video game. Kudos to Halo for its Spartans. They come closest to what a mobile infantry can do.

One should remember that UNSC has wide access to incredible medical technology, medical technology that can fix most chronic medical problems that would prevent a person from becoming a soldier. So the UNSC had a lot of people that were physically absolutely capable of passing the training, but did not have the mindset, which is a generous way of saying they didn't have that special kind of brain damage that makes people wiling jump out planes on the regular, nevermind into enemy fire. The takeaway is this, you who are reading this, you could like have become an ODST if you really wanted to, because the UNSC had the medical technology to make you strong enough to actually do it.
I went immediately from this to the ODST trailer video. That thing went so freaking HARD and it came out of nowhere. Such a good ad. Man, those were the days.
0:54 For any of you not well versed into Halo lore the Spartans IIs were in fact not orphans but literally taken from their families and replaced with clones, so the family wouldn't suspect their child was stolen to become jacked up super soldiers named after a warrior people who would throw their babies down pits if they were deformed, so take that the Info as you will considering just under half of the Spartan IIs died from the biological augmentation procedures. (They were teenagers)
At least one Spartan II candidate was taken by ONI from orphan-like conditions, and the general profile of Spartan III candidates I think broadly fits the descriptor "orphan" but yeah if we're talking about IIs then "orphan" really isn't the best characterization
My man Rookie got played dirty. Good thing I can't read and that he's actually okay and likely snoozing in a hammock or something. Mickey is likely chilling at home with family eating bagels. And Buck is busy being Buck.

That ODST live action ad still gets to me to this day. Some of the best music of any Halo game, and one of the best campaigns to boot. I love me a good Helljumper.
I knew it was only a matter of time before we got some sweet sweet Helljumpers lore! Thanks for taking this opportunity to bring us back to the glory days! 😄
I can imagine, realistically, the ODST core remains into the halo timeline to deal with normal human threats, whereas the spartan IV's and beyond exist to take on alien threats.
Fun fact, a functional drop pod could be created with modern technology. NASA actually considered it to be used as escape pods on stations and/or shuttles in the case of emergencies. The only reason they were never made was cost, as the tech would be very very very expensive current day
From an in-universe perspective ignoring fan love, I’d imagine that ODSTs end up becoming a subsection of Spartan IVs or maybe even Spartan Vs. While normal Spartan IV/Vs do normal Spartan things, the Spartan ODSTs do normal ODST things, but as Spartans. We’ve already seen some Spartan Helljumpers like Alpha 9, so the natural in-universe continuation would be Super ODSTs.

The fact that you mentioned The Cole Protocol is awesome. The whole tattoo thing was my favorite part of the entire book. "Hey man, did you know Captain Keys has street cred?"
Damn, that "They're probably not gonna be around long enough to annoy you for very long" part really kind struck a bitter chord in me. Never thought about that. Starting to see that black armor looking more like a suit and coffin all in one.
Cole protocol is my 2nd favorite novel in the collection. The intro gives a fantastic view on how ODSTs theive in urban combat against rogue innie cells.
the poster at 7:54 was a great item from the Forward Unto Dawn webseries and I got a printed version for my friend to take to college in 2013 Edit: extremely good discretion on ignoring the book that ruins characters we liked.
My favorite ODST trooper, would have to be Mickey from Halo 3’s ONI HQ mission. He’s the Demolition specialist, and the written blurb he gets in the official guide is hilarious. Something along the line of he’s already a little crazy for willingly dropping into orbit from a functional spacecraft in the heat of battle. Now he’s extra crazy for wanting to do that and carry additional explosives as his main weapon.
Fun thing to know. If anyone wants to read a really good story centered around ODSTs then I encourage you to check out a fanfiction called Halo: Feet First. The story mostly centers around the main character Duncan and his squad as they go through the war. Very well written with likable characters and it stays very close to the lore. With some exceptions though they're not bad or overboard. The author is one of those rare few that knows how to create tension even though we know the main character isn't gonna die cause he's the main character. This is legitimately one of the few stories I've read where I was on the edge of my seat multiple times. I guess I should also say I have no relation to the author or anything of that sort. I just really love that story. It could easily fit into the cannon story.
you gotta check out the Kilo-Five trilogy, Glassland, Thursday War, and Mortal Dictata. takes place a few years after H3, and follows an ONI team of 3 ODSTs, a Spartan 2, an ONI Officer/Spook, and BB Oni's personal Smart AI (Like Cortana). They are tasked with fueling both sides of a civil war that breaks out on the Elites' homeworld. It shows a cool perspective of what ODSTs think of Spartans, especially when working together in the field. definitely worth a ready
Oh hell yeah, this please me a lot. This may not be pirate lore of vampire coast but this fucking great. Love learning lore of halo! Keep of great work! Because hail the mighty!!
The HALO TV series might be the hottest of hot trash, BUUUUUUUTTTT a while ago we got the largely okay Forward Unto Dawn. There's some talk about ODSTs in a tactical seminar but there's a brief moment (when the Covenant attack) that the ODST drop straight on the school. And for those several seconds, not only do the students know how bonkers they are, how chaotic it is them dropping here means the situation is, but the ODST just get the fuck to work. And I lose my goddamn mind every time.
First, brilliant video. You made such a dull, typical workday lunch so fun and nostalgic. Second, the sheer fact we only were blessed with a single game regarding ODSTs front and center will continue to be one of the biggest blunders Microsoft/343 continue to perpetuate. All those Reach attachments are partially thanked to the ODST design and the drop pods shown in Infinite's trailer (and in Halo 2) are thanked again to the sheer philosophy of ODST's. Outside of Halo, it's why I'm hoping the next Doom goes back to Doomguy being a marine. Sometimes being a "guy ready for whatever is up the creek" is more appealing than "green super soldier". Cheers to everyone who misses melancholy freeform jazz.
Good video, I want to emphasise I enjoyed it, and even learned a few bits about the founding of the ODST's I didn't already know, but I have to nitpick: Calling ODST's "Special Forces Operatives" is kind of missing what Special Forces are. Effectively in reality you have two kinds of forces: Conventional and Special. Conventional Forces are designed to fight the enemy and destroy them, more or less openly, but crucially directly. Where Special Forces are meant to fight the enemy indirectly, either by enabling friendly nations forces in a deniable manner, targeting vital infrastructure while not engaging in combat, or by in reconnaissance in the enemies rear, with a side job of counter terrorism and direct action in insurgency ops. So how to ODST's fit into this? They are supposed to use direct insertion from space to take key operational objectives, and hold them until relieved by heavier conventional forces, or use their rapid insertion methods to outmanuever and destroy enemy conventional forces. In short: ODSTs are Conventional, not Special, Forces. Elite Conventional Forces, for sure (which in some ways makes them more bad ass since Special Forces are not designed to engage the enemy directly while ODST's *are*). Personally I blame FPS's for this, they tend to make Special Forces out to be "Conventional Forces" but "betterer" while missing the point that there are two very distinct mission sets that apply to both. Special Forces appeal to game developers because they have the best training, not because they're designed to take on the toughest defences the enemy has, but because if they get into trouble there usually won't be anyone around to get them out of it except themselves. But a video game isn't generally interested in portraying 40 days of driving civilian trucks around and hoping nobody notices your accents while training the insurgency, for good reason.
Part of that is ODSTs were somewhat retconned post Halo 3 ODST. Prior to that in the books they were portrayed as elite conventional forces. Back in the day we often compared them to Army Rangers. They'd deploy rapidly in a company sized element to engage the enemy directly. Post game they wanted to show them doing more traditionally Special Forces stuff too so Bungie had them listed as being trained to do every kind of mission imaginable which created some problems. Long range recon, counter insurgency, counter contraband, direct action, unconventional warfare, asset recovery, search and rescue, you name it they're suppose to do it. And it got even messier when it was stated that every ODST had to be a veteran of a special forces group. Later books make some adjustments to this but its still pretty sloppy.
@@mekboy7403 I think that's kind of two sides of the same coin: Creators not understanding what various branches actually do. Special Forces are the best of the best so if we want to make ODST's better then they need to have been Special Forces. (Frankly if every ODST had to have a Special Forces background they'd never be able to sustain the numbers needed for company actions that they've been portrayed mostly as doing, but you knew that). Plus, lets face it, post HALO Reach the HALO universe in general took a dive downhill.
One of the best moments of the ODSTs was in the book The Flood. While the Master Chief is going through the events of Halo CE, a company of ODSTs is single handedly holding back a bulk of the Covenant on the ring and kicking a ton of ass. Even when the flood themselves show up they still put up a hell of a fight.
Even back in the day, I always thought a Helldiver-like game for the ODSTs would have been freaking ballin'! Same goes for 40K, cause a game where you're an Astartes kill team being dropped into a Tyranid/Ork swarm would be freaking amazing. Either way I'm beyond happy Helldivers 2 has succeeded so damn well, but I do miss some ODST action T_T
Getting rid of the ODST's just cause Spartan IV's exist would be like saying the United States has Special Forces so we can get rid of the Ranger Regiment, or we have SEAL teams so we no longer need the Marines Force Recon. Or if you want a 40k equivalent we have Adeptus Custodes so we no longer need Space Marines. Surely the Spartan IV's are hella expensive to make and train, and not every situation demands the best of the best. Sometimes you need a good middleman that would inflict an unreasonable amount of casualites if you send your regular baseline infantry, but don't quite wanna risk all the training, experience, and (let's be honest) price tag of your most elite units

Edit: extremely good discretion on ignoring the book that ruins characters we liked.
