Rusty Oil Lamp Restoration - 4K

- This is a Restoration of a Vintage Chalwyn Parker oil lamp.
I bought this lamp last summer with the intent of restoring it. My channel was still young and I had no idea how I would restore such an item with the tools I had. However after many months and a few purchases I was finally able to restore the lamp.
I started the restoration by removing as much paint as possible. I then sandblasted all the rust and any paint that was left behind.
After all the rust was removed I began preparing the pieces for powder coating. I cleaned the metal with methylated spirit and finished by heating the parts with the blow torch to remove moisture and burn any lint that was left behind. Since this was my first time powder coating I had the pressure too high at first. Eventually I managed to coat the whole lamp and successfully cured it in the oven. While the lamp was curing I could see some fish eyes forming. Next time I’ll be sure to scrub even more.
The last step was to simply assemble the few parts and test the lamp.
Considering this was my first time powder coating I was rather happy with the results. Hopefully I can improve as I do more restorations.
I hope you enjoy the video and subscribe for more restorations.

I could watch sandblasting all day, I find it's immediate results so satisfying and therapeutic. Another job so well done. This is the last video to watch as I've binged all your others. Can't wait for new ones.

My new favorite video! Excellent restore and I loved the powder coating! Sandblast and powder coat all the things! 😁
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment. It’s been my dream for over 10 years to have this equipment, however iv never needed it. Not I can justify such a purchase.
Great restore like the powder coating.
Thank you. Hopefully my powder coating can improve over time.
Once a common sight, any roadworks had these, along with a little red and white striped tent for brewing the tea in over paraffin stove...
Sadly most of them are destroyed now.
Beautiful restoration 👍🏻
Thank you
Awesome job amazing restore
Thank you
GOOD JOB!!!!---what was old and rusty--------is brand new again.!!
Thank you, glad you liked it.
Nice I was thinking the would be upset putting that into the oven
Keep doing your video's
Thankfully it’s my workshop oven, just for powdercoat.
Ya. I'm glad to hear that. Keep you out trouble
Used to see them hanging on skips
Best work
Thank you
Superb job, really enjoyed it, brought back some amazing memories of seeing those lamps hung on skips etc. I think they are quite sought after after and expensive now, no matter what condition they are in, who’d have thought of that back in tbe day. Oh, helpful hint for hinge pins, try using a drill when taking them out or putting them back in, takes a lot of effort out. Appreciate that you wouldn’t be able to get all the way in or out but it would get you close.
They sure are sought after now. I’m glad you liked it.
It seems to me that the fuel tank was better painted in black.
If the upper edge of the wick is trimmed with scissors so that there are no protruding threads - the flame will be even more even.
The lantern was in good condition, and after restoration it became better than new. Great job.
Thank you, glad you liked it. I was considering painting the tank, but preferred the bare metal
Neat! I would have used either yellow or orange instead. God job.
Thank you, it is yellow. It just has fluorescent pigment in the powder. Looks different under a black light
Very Nice! I was worried for a minute when you sandblasted the lenses. I thought for sure they were done for. Going with the fluorescent yellow is a great choice. I look forward to seeing more of your work! [Edit: wanted to mention that white is generally used as a basecoat under fluorescent colors to make them pop more. Also, clear is then usually used to preserve the pigment of the color. ]
I was also worried. I tested a corner and it turned out ok. I would have been scrubbing all night if I didn’t blast them.
Hi bro 👋👋👋 amazing restoration 👍👍👍🔥💣👌🏽
Hey, thank you very much bro, glad you liked it.
Very nice job. What size oven was that you used for the powder coating?
Thank you, it’s approx 40cm x 40cm
I already want a bigger one.
Sharp. Looks a different color in every shot. Yellow? Green? IDK. :)
Thank you
Very nicely done. I have the exact same powder coat system and had the exact same problems with the dispersion from the gun. I am wondering if that dispersion disc is just too big in diameter? IDK but you can remove it and lower the air pressure and get a more direct powder stream coming out. Don't know the answer, but I may reduce the diameter on mine to make it shoot the powder more direct instead of everywhere but where you are pointing the gun... Thumbs Up!
Thank you. Iv watched a lot of powder coat videos on UA-cam. I haven’t tried coating with the disk removed. I can only do a certain amount of experimenting with the price of these powders. Glad you liked it.
13:14 Love the smell of mineralised meths reminds me of a friends mamod steam tractor as a kid
Glad I could bring back good memories

Hope you used heat resistant / flame resistant paint .....
My wife would murder me for even thinking about!!!!
That oven is specifically for powder coating.
Nice to see how far your channel hascomesince you made your first handle on the drill press!!!!!
Thank you for supporting me all this time. That drill press was my workhorse. I still can’t believe I have these new tools. I had to start 2020 off properly.
Желтый больше канает.
nicely done, but you didn't need the fancy tools. Makes it easier, sure but they are not required. In my opinion, you should have painted the inside, including the lamp base, in bright silver. This will reflect more light and give you more light for the same fuel burned. In fact, you could cut a mirror, or polish the inside to a mirror shine, like the door anyway. get that bank for the buck. You can get high temp paint in spray cans so powder coating wasn't really required, but now that you have it, get busy, no excuses now. If that's your wife's oven and her racks, quick do another vid before she busts your head for getting her racks messy!
Thanks for the tips. Glad you liked it
Needed body filler. U can see the repairs ar the bottom when it is painted.
