One of the most surprising aspects of your work is your age. You clearly have a passion for restoring items which have missed out on TLC and your patience for meticulous work is greatly rewarded by the finished results. May you continue to go from strength to strength!
This channel is great! No talking or music. Ideal for a cantakerous misery like myself who finds pretty much everything annoying these days. Keep up the great work, fella!
Nice restoration! Them tilleys are classics. A few things to note if you plan on using the lamp: The paint on the hood will not withstand the temperatures, hence why tilley enamelled to hoods originally. The washer and washer holder on the pump is the wrong way round ( the rubber should face the tank) and finally the mantle should be tied at both ends of the burner. Good luck.
Very Good points, I thought the mantle at the end was broken, but as not tied at both ends, which i did not realise in the video that may/will explain why i thought it looked broken.
Fantastic work and great video. Only things worth a comment from me i think is the Paint on the Top will not take the heat, it was enameled originally for this reason and the Mantle looks like it is, has been torn broken, however another poster noted that the mantle had only been tied at the top during the assembly and normally is tied top and bottom? In my experience of Mantles (not on Tilly Lamps) they normally only have one tie and like a bag or balloon shape, this said I have seen what "appears to be two ties being removed on some Tilly mantle assemblies. So Tilley's may have different mantles and fitting methods. Either way there is something wrong with the Mantle on the finished one and the one burning looks broken. PS - looking at video again it can be seen that when the old hood/top is removed and turned over to see the old manttle or what is left of it it can be seen that the Original Mantle was tied in to places and the pipe was left passing through the manttle and the left OPEN. This means the mantle fitted was the wrong type and not one for this Tilly lamp. The one that is for this Tilley will have two ties.
Tilley lamps and pressure stoves were the stuff of holidays and scouting when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s. My parents used them when we went on camping holidays in the '60s. When I joined the scouts in the 70s they were using them too. Great to see one still working. I think our stoves were Primus, though Tilley made them too. The modern ones aren't as well made, so these antique ones are much more of a pleasure to use.
I love your videos. I admittedly have a short attention span and so most videos I watch are around 3-6 minutes. Yours, however, are somewhat hypnotic and never seem long. Something about the sounds and watching something old become new again is therapeutic. I feel the same way about the "Car Cleaning Guru" channel. His voice is soothing like Bob Ross and watching the cars go from grimy to new is wonderful. Thanks!
A very interesting restoration,on a very good English product, you did a first rate job,and saved a very useful piece of equipment, you never know in this day and age when you just might needs it on a regular basis, you video gets my thumbs up
lovely job, hope all the paint hold up to the heat them lamps give off. used to use one of them when fishing in the winter as they come in handy to warm you up.
This is a beautiful old lantern. The only ones I've seen here like that are either red or green Coleman lanterns. The brass makes this one look really special. Great project!
Smashing job mate, it looks like new. This has got me thinking of getting the old lamp from the shed and doing a restoration myself, trying one out anyway. Thanks for the inspiration!
I've watched several of your videos, all of which seem to keep my attention. This particular video was satisfying in the fact that you showed the lantern glowing like it did when it was being used. For someone who seems younger than some guys I've watched on here, you really pay attention to detail. Wish I had you close by, I have a few things that could use your Midas touch! Keep up the good work!
Its so satisfying to see that you are as perfectionist as i am you did so many things that i thought you wouldn't do because they werent that necessary but thats why i love this channel , great work as always dude keep it up :)
This looks really cool! One suggestion: I'm not sure if this is the case with your mantles, but I believe you're supposed to burn them in by holding an open flame over them. They'll shrink to the size of the lantern and then you remove the flame. After this, you can pump the gas and then light the gas. This prevent the creation of holes in the mantles, providing a more efficient burn.
Liked the video before I even watched it, finally a Restore It video!!!! Keep it up bud. Edit: now that I’ve watched it, I’m wishing there was a vote up button or a 5star scale. That thing came out bad ass.
Great restauration. Last time i used Tilley was something like 20years ago in Finnish army. I remember that they are crazy bright and bursts into flames if not used properly.
Still ' The Best ' lamp you can get . Tip - the soaking of the lighter in meths . Use a small jam jar and drop it in for 30 seconds . Worked for me with exactly the same lamp for 45 years ;) .Nice resto and the sourcing the parts . Brass wire wheel instead of the harsh steel one ;) . You ripped the new mantle dude :( . You also have to let them warm up for a few mins , hence the spluttering .
Oh you remind me when i was 15 when we were at leeds city in 1981 my father buy this same candle our was red and black from the top miss old days at uk i visit it last these 10 years and its not like the 80 or 90 all change any way thank you with love and peace from dubai
looks nice.. hopefully it will be OK with the top painted and the anticipated heat.. but if you just use it now and again and more for a keepsake, then what the hell.. good job.. thanks for sharing..
I really like this videos, usually when I'm watching I'm thinking about what would be the next step if it was me the one doing the restoration and usually you do the same thing I'm thinking. Good editing :)
Put for the alcohol under the glass around the convertor for a minute or more with alcohol to warm up the converter then light. This turns the liquid fuel to a vapor so it will burn. It won't surge that way. Great job.....
The alcohol starter comes in a glass jar with a tin lid. The silk that you used is a Chinese Butterfly wick that uses a side paraffin candle. You can make a tune hole and fit the silk ob the top leaving some extra thread to tie on the bottom of the silk just where it attaches to the candle.
Well done, good video on the restoration. Shoot and continue to these videos. I also began to try myself in the restoration of the video on the channel .👍👍👍
Nice job. I am into old lanterns myself. Most of my collection is coleman but I love to see when an old lantern is given new life. Also you might want to oil the leather pump cup with some kind of thin oil. Any will do but it helps it seal and helps with friction.

I second that! Nice comment MatchstalkMan!

The attention to detail is so intense with this guy, it creates an immaculate finished product.
By far the most enjoyable video I've watched on youtube. Top Notch photography and brilliant work skills. Marvelous.

Mister, let me tell you something.
You are a magnificent artist.
What an elegantly designed machine. I commend you on first class restoration.
The lamps give such an incredible beautiful light, soooo much better than any kind of modern light.
holy shit 165k subscribers already… couldve sworn you had only like 50k subs the other week
Good job! These videos are very therapeutic. I first watched the automotive videos but enjoy watching other things being repaired.

I wish you made more Lantern Restore It videos. Lanterns are so cool!

well Done. Good job on the dismantling and reassembly. The colours you used look very close to the original.
Its so satisfying to see that you are as perfectionist as i am you did so many things that i thought you wouldn't do because they werent that necessary but thats why i love this channel , great work as always dude keep it up :)

Thank you so much for doing that little demonstration at the end! Keep up the great work excited for future videos! 👍
Gorgeous and very functional! Awesome job!
Why is polished brass so sexy?
Even brass with patina looks amazing.
You both need to make more videos.
I want a gf made of brass :)
Why is You so sexy?
chongtak....its funny cuz a "Brass" in England is slang for a prostitute
Each project you complete is so amazing! I love the details you put into everything. 👏
