You are right , they used to take a lot more pride in the way things like this looked , it was not just functional , it was a piece of furniture and was made to look good while performing its function. Take a look at victorian waterworks in england, they are amazing inside , they took pride even in things like that

Notice how back in the day the detail and ornateness they put into making things. And we're made to last, otherwise you would not have been able to restore it like new.
Things made today do not last, because they are designed not to last that when they break you will have to buy another one. It's all about the money now not quality. 👍

I inherited a standing mixer from my grandmother. It has a glas pitcher.
I'm 52 and it's at least as old as I am, but still works perfectly.
I know that's not as old as the heater, just an example of how durable stuff used to be made.

Artistic/functional comments: Beautifully done. This is an impressive piece that really looks great when it is cleaned and polished. Your skills are amazing.... Technically, there was a lot of cringing and dis-belief. Screwdriver blades should be as wide as the screw head, not that narrow little tip you used.... Using an adjustable wrench for a tinsmiths hammer should be illegal. It was painful to watch. Also, using the correct type of old-fashioned rivets would certainly be preferable. BUT..!!! all nit-picking and whining aside - great job with this restoration.....

Nice job. If you or others use the lamp or lamps like it, I hope a bit of advice from my experience will be of some help.. You will benefit from a more pleasing performance by using a chimney specifically designed for this type of burner and flame spreader. The flame will look and behave very differently whilst emitting more heat and being a lot more economical by burning less wick and/or paraffin/kerosene. Be careful to start the flame low and only raise gradually so the chimney isn't heat shocked. It will crack, it happens a lot. Ensure an even flame all around by charring the top of the wick and using a wick cleaner or alternatively, by running your finger lightly around the top of the wick in one direction until it's level all the way around. Not doing so will result in spikes of flame that will have multiple adverse affects such as not being able to utilise the maximum flame as the flame spikes will shoot out of the chimney and/or create soot and long before the rest of the wick is burning at maximum. When you see sparks flying up the chimney, it means your wick is burning instead of the paraffin. Old wicks do not perform very well. There are still new ones being widely manufactured.

This appears to be more heater than lamp? I would suspect the original wicks would have had an higher asbestos content and behaved more like a gas mantle when they burned. It initially burnt pure white but rapidly yellowed with a more prevalent blue flame. Great effort none the less as many of these heaters would have been scrapped in that condition.

So beautiful, the bullish gas isn’t harmful, where does it come from?

Thank you so much. Paraffin is used as fuel. It is useful to pilgrimage the interior.

I assume that the hole in the back of the top is for an optional chimney pipe fitting - if this was stood on a fireplace, the fire opening bricked up and a hole drilled in alinement with the hole in the back of the light/heater, and a pipe slotted between them - efficient fume extraction, with the fumes drawn up the existing chimney - a kerosene stove. Is the top of the heater part strong enough to support an old/passive/gas heated kettle for making tea/coffee? 😋

Hello. Thank you very much for your comments and information. My guess is that after burning for about 15 minutes, it accumulates enough heat to boil water. You can make a good coffee. :)
