    Back in the day we use to break in all our engines with NON Detergent 30w and a bottle of comp cams ZDDP additive. Being able to just buy a break in oil is a lot better than worrying about having the right amount of ZDDP

      Absolutely. Nothing compares to having a purpose-built formula specifically for engine run-in. A fully formulated Engine Break-In oil is a better way to go; adding in a zinc additive to a separate engine oil without knowing if it is compatible is sort of like playing chemistry-Russian-roulette, you just don't know if the two are compatible together.

    What are the auto manufacturers using in their engines that is different then us home rebuilders?

      Absolutely nothing...never have. "Break-in" oils are a marketing gimmick and always will be.

    It might be a good idea to introduce yourself which you did and your educational background along with what college you went to. Do you have a degree in chemistry or as a chemical engineer. The trouble with the internet and UA-cam is the fact that there are many on them that went to a pep-talk session about a product and have a good memory.

    Which Driven break in oil do you recommend for a performance SBC with a solid flat tappet cam?

      BR40 is a good choice if you don't know your bearing clearances

    Why not use synthetic oil for break-in compared to conventional mineral oil, additive packages being similar.

    • @setha360
      @setha360 Рік тому

      synthetic oil has too much moly and will not let rings seat causing oil burning, you also need camshaft lifter polishing in older engines.

      All depends on the honing finish. OEM uses synthetic in many new vehicles with no special previous run-in. New ring coatings (pvd) and thinner rings with proper honing and the break in after a few miles regardless of oil choice. We used to use non-detergent mineral oil in the 70s, totally different ring materials and Lee's the great honing
