12:00 I think their reason for declining was, that they didn't want to get too dependent to a big corp
remember from Part 1? Sean started his own company because the studio he worked at got absorbed into EA

Yea, because then when big daddy Sony says to do something that might go against the original vision of the game they don't have much choice.

Yeah, Paul. Just because it's a nothing tax write-off to Sony doesn't mean they can't use it to get their hooks in even further. You don't want the publisher to be able to interfere with how your office runs.

This is why so many games have cliche battle royal modes and zombie modes. Because some corporate bigwig comes along and just wants to do what the other successful games are doing for profit motive not realising that by doing that they ruin an otherwise unique experience that would sell better.

Dont forget, that to this day, every single content update the game has ever gotten was free. No microtransactions. No paid DLCs. Nothing. You buy the game, you get EVERYTHING.
I know internet historian talks about that in the video, but i think it needs a ton of emphasis

I'm with HelloGames and Sean here. Build on your own back, know what you might lose, _without_ being chained to consequences decided by other people.

Good point, also since automated CC systems require a clear speaking voice, having a human being able to translate for Sean who ends up stuttering and stumbling on his own works will be able to communicate more effectively than the automated system.

It is possible to write subtitles live, I've seen it on a few presidential announcements. But it requires a special software with built in shorthand and the writer has to distillate the sentences to give the essential. At the end of the day, an interpreter is a good solution for a live audience.

And as a side note replaced sign language with Spanish, Japanese, or another language. Saying to It is a language and so that is their form of subtitles. Just because you can read doesn't discredit it. Who needs a German translator? He read English can't he? Not a shot but it is a real irritation to many of the deaf community and sadly a common line said.

41:40 the interpreter is for the Live audience and the people watching the livestream, you can tell it's on a live stage and the footage was probably from the livestream itself, having an interpreter means they don't need to go back and add it the captions and make sure it matches up right at the same time. making the livestream accessible without having to fuck around behind the scenes and making it possible to just upload it immedeately and be done.

With regards to sign language, completely get where you are coming from. But this is also done live for deaf people in the crowds. It is honestly a really great thing inclusivity wise because instead of a hilariously bad live-S2T they also get to look at a person expressing body language in addition. Not deaf myself but it's something I'd imagine really appreciating.

I don’t have to worry about falling off the curb and smashing my face because I can see. I have nothing but respect for those that can navigate the world like I can yet can’t. Same with deafness. Deaf folk who drive won’t hear horns or trains and even just walking around they have to be more careful than I would have to be. That’s why I think they’re troopers. They just continue to march through life, tackling the obstacles they have to go through in life due to their disability. I won’t let no one disrespect the differently abled

It's so, *so* precious to see a good faith effort to live up to what their 1.0s failed at, and redeem themselves through hard work. And it's especially nice to see the playerbases rewarding them for doing so. It tells us that fucking up with your launch doesn't have to be the end of the story - you can, if you dare, redeem yourself completely and show us that you're sorry with your actions, and when you do, the game audiences will always forgive you.

I enjoy NMS. I finally gave it a chance earlier this year, and it was right around the time Elite Dangerous was starting to go to hell, so the timing couldn't have been better.
And just a side note: It's a good thing Sean paid for the Joe Danger product by selling his house as opposed to going into debt. It's because of this that they could afford to make No Man's Sky, and it's also the reason they've been able to afford to keep working on it post launch without adding micro-transactions. They never went into debt to anyone, so they were able to use much larger portions of resources doing what they thought was right, instead of being beholden to share holders who would've had them take the money and run.

There's been even more updates since then. The look has changed. the environments are fantastic. The sky looks more real. The creature diversity has expanded by leaps and bounds. We're on the "Frontiers" release now. Highly recommend if you haven't gotten up the resolve to try it again. it's almost unrecognizable from what it was a year ago in over all look. We can oversee settlements now. You can ride FLYING creatures now, where you couldn't before. there are community expeditions. You can adopt animal companions, who will then lay eggs and using a feature on the Anomaly you can get some very interesting hybrid creatures. You can change the look of your freighter now. the textures inside space stations have changed and look SO much better. There are new cosmetic customizations. New base pieces and materials to build base pieces with. This list goes on and on. So much new content and more coming all the time. One of my favorite games. 🥰
Edit: Oh yes, and you mustn't forget living ships! While they look cool, there's still a lot of work to be done on them and with as hard working as these guys are, I'm sure they will make them even better.

The one part of that video i will forever disagree with.
    "It´s not Sony's fault"
They kow what they´re doing and why, it IS their fault.
Whenever an unfinished game comes out, the Suspects are the Publishers, because they´re operated not by people who know what they´re doing or care about the products/studios.
They care about the Shareholders, and the fact that they want money quickly, that is the one, the only thing that drives the Big Publishers.
And that´s why they will always be at fault.

Hey Paul, love your work. I want to recommend you react to a UA-camr called Sideways. His focus is on musical theory and is pretty entertaining and easy to follow. I recommend his videos:
    - Why Avatar has the most ironic soundtrack of all time.
    - Why the Music in Les Miserables (2012) is worst than you thought.
    - Why the music in Cats (2018) is worst than you thought. An indirect sequel to the Les Miserables video.
    - Why A Goofy Movie is better than you remember.
    - How to listen to music incorrectly and how to find Superman in The Avengers. (One title)
most of these vids are 20-25mins. Except for Les Miserables (40mins) and Cats (68mins) but they are worth it if you liked the other options I recommend. Thanks!

I got No Man's Sky recently because of the New MacOS Port. It runs on my MacBook Pro with the M2 processor and 64GB of RAM it runs incredibly fast and smooth along with many other completely unrelated apps I use for work. It's sitting in the background right now. I'm completely addicted to the game. It doesn't feel like a game, it's a sort of lifestyle thing now. If you added reading books to a jigsaw puzzle to doing things like cooking, building, to a computer game, you might have something like No Man's Sky.
I read the other day that there are only 26 people working for Hello Games. I first bought the game back when it came out but stopped playing because I switched from Windows to Mac. Because I bought it way back then, I didn't pay anything this time. I just downloaded the new Mac version.
I've already got a couple hundred hours into the game and I haven't paid anything.
How do they make money? Only on new users?

  • @itshunni8346
    @itshunni8346 2 роки тому +1

Your wrong about the bankruptcy thing. Hello games is called "Hello Games ltd" that ltd means limited. this is a form of limited liability company that gives liability equivalent to your investment. this means that the shareholders do actually take on the debt of the company. the banks can and would have gone after everything he owned. Bankruptcy and corporate law is very complicated and has a lot of rules depending on how the venture is structured. You're thinking of an LLC which is also a limited liability company that does not give liability to the shareholders for any debt.

22:11 I've seen a lot of reacts to "The Engoodening of No Man's Sky" and yours was the one I was thinking to be worse, since you are so serious, and the video is also about mocking and fun. But here you made a very intersting consideration that I have never thought about and haven't seen nobody else to point out and it's totally true. They made promisses of the universe of possibilities that they had full control of and knew to be possible and when there was no deadline! How nobody said that before!? From that moment on, I started thinking you are smart and I am dumb. So I'll continue watching the reaction and congratulations (no sarcasm, for real), you are really smart and despite of the jokes and funny tone of the video, you sincerely and smartly made great ponderations

Honestly the best method I have seen for small devs is the valheim method, don't worry about advertising until you have a 90ish percent complete game, all the core concepts, gameplay loops and themes in place, then release and focus on that little bit of extra polish afterwards. No one felt ripped off playing valheim despite it technically being incomplete, because there was enough core features, and no one felt disappointed because there was no expectations it kind of just appeared on the scene and was a "this is what we have, take it or leave it."

About the ASL comment. He was presenting at a live conference (GDC) where there were likely deaf people in the audience if the had a live interpreter. If they have a live interpreter, they'll show the interpreter over auto-generated text, which is terrible. It would be especially terrible for something like a coding conference where it won't be able to really translate the advanced, interesting stuff that you tune in for.

  • @dethvel8568

  • @anonimus370

One issue why No Man's Sky got as much shit and people thought they outright lied about stuff, is because most gaming companies/publishers and even sometimes developers constantly do that, lie about features they know won't be in the game but still lie about them and after release "they were cut because they weren't fun". The trust credit between gamers and gaming industry is at the rock bottom, now even more so than back in 2016, so in some ways No Man's Sky was the trigger for an avalanche. The EA's, Activision-Blizzard's and Ubisoft's and TakeTwo's of the industry have been milking the consumers with bullshit and lies for almost a decade, and we're at a point everyone gets hit in the crossfire, whether honest but miscalculated or outright liar.

If the PR for the game was reaching the average person on the street, the kind of person who doesn't give a crap about any new computer game, it must have been massive.

Regarding the "hiring the PR guy" - it's not that easy to actually hire a PR guy who won't screw things up, especially if we touch such a niche (And it's indeed niche) area as a space exploration games. You can easily find the guy for shooter and explain him how the stuff he is supposed to present is "like Call of duty" or "Like Doom, but with extra mechanics" or "Counter-strike with swords and crossbows", but when it comes to space, it's much harder. Especially during 2016, when the only games that were "like" NMS were Elite: Dangerous (At a time without space legs component and through development of NMS was even without planetary component) and Meme Citizen (Which is not good comparison point to say the least).
