It’s amazing how much lonely or desperate people will rationalize their behavior. He may think he’s the white knight for her. I’m sure either yourself or others have commented along this line.
Dated a couple of girls who were up front about suffering clinical depression. My advice is stay away from that. It'll go from smiles and good times to ruin and rubble quicker than you can reply to a text message.

Met a really attractive girl early in the year and we hit it off real quick. All the signs were there and I ignored them. I was “perfect”, her soulmate, shared a lot of interests, all very early on. Everything was going great, then came the truth. She had to point out which bars she wasn’t allowed into, she had a support animal that came before everything, was the victim in every story, and had a recent history with hard drugs and the law. These girls will put their best foot forward and then often snap, and it can get ugly FAST.

Here too, she was amazing known her for 30 years, normally I run away from these issues, I knew her and I tried to be a savior and help her, long history of drugs and alcohol many relapses, no job no car, living with me to hide from the problem did all I could to help her, but then she reached out to enabler friend, married man too went way out of his way to keep her drinking, I told his wife but that didn't stop it. I had no choice but to turn her in for existing warrant, wasn't going to be involved any longer, aiding felony bail jumper unknowingly kinda knew but stayed out of her business. I tried because I cared for her, I called her in because I cared for her and to save myself from future issue, I feel bad for it cause it was low but I also feel like I did what my instinct screamed at me to do self preservation and fear of getting in trouble being associated any longer especially with the bad news man she kept in contact with. It was a short life together 6 months and 4 of those months was in and out of detox. I didn't want to watch her drink herself to death, if this would have continued I'd have possibly been arrested. If you see a friend who needs help, help them but do not get so involved to be put in this situation, had I not known her as long as I have I'd have ran away..
I’m not sure why the kid would want to date crazy. Every relationship you commence and end always end in damage to both parties one way or the other. Why touch a boiling kettle when you know it is hot? There is nothing to gain from dating a crazy - just a waste of time and your sanity. If it were me, I would observe the men dating those crazies and learn from it.

Go to volunteering events, cycling groups, bible studies, wine tastings, art shows etc. Theres 'good' women around that wont settle for less than a financially established man. If you dont kiss their butt and always keep the take it or leave it attitude in ltrs you will really enjoy the women that come into your life.
I think they are so used to expect to be better morally than men. I have had many divorced mothers get all annoyed that I’ve had career success and that I’m free from the rat race. I've been in a relationship with a lovely woman for 5 months - she's on anti-depression meds as she was abused as a kid She finds orgasm really difficult and as a result the feedback from her when we have sex is minimal. Depends what kind of damage. Some women have had such a horrific time with men in the past that they will think any tiny thing you do for them is like a lottery win! They will be the ones paying for the date, offering to support you, willing to do chores when they stay over your house. Especially if they had a religious upbringing. The ones that internalise abuse and just work harder to please men since they don't have the planet-sized ego that a lot of women have these days. Watch how they treat other people though. That's generally a good indicator of how they will end up treating you.
Tbh I've been using 6 women for sex and 3 of them always pay for outings dinner etc. I have no issues with it. I have zero empathy for them.
