Yes he definitely struggled with the role of the duke. It was quite amazing that despite the fact that he hates the character and the repertoire is way out of his tessitura, he still managed to make the arias sound beautiful and being so in character. Domingo is the best!
It is so gratifying that Placido finds the duke to be a louse, just like Pinkerton. I read that he tried to make Pinkerton a less louse-like character Pure Placido.
