Today I want to chat about something I've noticed lately - how drinking less alcohol has helped my joints feel so much better. For real, cutting back on the booze has done my knees and shoulders a solid.
I definitely enjoy grabbing drinks with friends or a glass of wine after work. But overdoing it, even just a few drinks throughout the week, and I'd notice my joints were achy or just more sore after training.
Turns out, there's a real link between alcohol and joint pain. Drinking can cause inflammation and dehydrate your joints, which means less lubrication and cushioning. Ouch! It also lowers nutrient absorption of minerals like magnesium and calcium that keep your bones & tissues strong. No bueno.

Here in Germany alcohol is so normal and even encouraged. I almost never drink, and so often I have to explain myself.
So I don't drink, smoke, and do a lot of sports, and I'm at a very good weight my entire life.
I tore my ACL in 2019 and my Meniscus three times because of soccer/football where I stepped into holes while sprinting. I play basketball nowadays and never really had a lower leg injury. I came back as fast and explosive as you probably can.
The only thing I'm "struggling" with is food. Because I was always athletic and never had problems with weight, I just ate whatever. I never had to think about it, but I probably should.

It can certainly be an adjustment to think about your nutrition differently after a situation like this. Good for you for being willing to see how you can improve!

I’ve been getting knee pain to the point inflammation/scar tissue on MRI on knee I had ACL reconstruction on 10 yrs ago. Think this was to do with overloading during first marathon training, but weird as I keep getting sore elbows and some pain in other knee as if it’s more full body than just overloading. Wondered if it’s alcohol, so gonna try cutting that out 🙏

Zero alcohol beers have got so good that its hard to for me to rationalise drinking. They are lower in calories, I sleep better, wake up fresh, avoid hangovers and save money

Ahh, the love hate relationship with alcohol. I’m a two beer a week drinker. I now split 12oz beers with my wife and we split a beer about three times a week. Maintaining weight is much easier when you don’t drink. My mtb rides are stronger when I don’t drink.
If you are chasing athletic perfection then you should not drink! Alcohol is a socially acceptable poison.

@@VictoriaDorsano no hangover whatsoever and if you train you can experience a greatly improved mind-body connection, enhanced creativity, curiosity, and nuance in movement. It sort of softens and widens your focus and perspective, is how I describe it, and my training has benefitted greatly from that. 10/10 recommend 👍🏼🙂
