This is exactly how I stopped drinking-one day at a time, no support group, no AA (though I wasn’t alcoholic), no help from anyone. I’d just been blessed with a newborn daughter and I wanted to be clean and sober since I was going to be a stay-at-home father. So, no more drinking. It’s been 15 years now, and I don’t miss alcohol one bit.😁

Did the same thing (kind of). I remember sitting at the bar hammered. My stomach felt awful, my brain was buzzing, I looked down at my gut and remembered how skinny I used to be. I suddenly felt this absolute and visceral feeling of disgust with myself wash over me. I slid my cocktail that wasn't even half empty away from me and walked out of the bar. That was my last drink.

being a musician who for years played in bands with alcoholics and playing in bars all the time made it difficult to disconnect alcohol from performing. that is until I joined a hardcore band with straight edge members playing shows with other straight edge bands where little to no alcohol was being consumed. that was the catalyst for me to realize that I didn't need to drink, and that i didn't really even enjoy drinking either.

I hear you brother. I turned 30 in '21 and for most of the decade I was playing in bands, addicted to Heroin and Coke, managed to kick both but was stuck with booze which became a bit of a problem. I'm drinking less and less as time goes on but theres something about being an artist in any capacity which seems to make intoxication quite difficult to avoid. Not saying that's the case for everyone in that position. Turns out weed is helping me cut down on booze.

I've had the same problem for all my life. When I was 16 my band mate made bray at our rehearsal places boiler room. And drank. Well when I was twenty I started to be a heavy drinker. I drank basically everyday at least some amount (except in army for a year). I never thought I was an alcolic but a casual drinker. For 10 years I always had an excuse for my drinking.. when we reheased with bands I've been in I always drank. I felt it gave me more inspiration in making music. Didn't feel right to play if I wasn't at least a bit drunk.
On gigs I drank and drank a lot. Felt sober after 6 pints, but thinking afterhand I wasn't as much as I thought. Some of the gigs started to go wrong and I wasn't keeping time as a drummer should. Got fired from couple of bands and just starting to realise that it was cause I always drank and was drunk. Some gigs I did with just two drinks and then made a limit that 2-3 is the max. Well it was good life but lost my fiancee, job and much more. Don't care about the money. I was always drinking. What ever the occasion was.. X-mas with family - what ever. Gradually the music started to fade from my life and found myself alone drinking. After covid realized I drink a 18 pack every night home alone. Some years ago without beeing playing drums for 3 years I went to conservatory in helsinki to play with a group of people and drunk again obviously and realized that the drinking had really taken a toll..
Now I'm trying really hard not to drink, but feel it quite hard. Feels good after a day or two beeing totally free of it, but it comes back. I have realized that I can't drink at all. Spent over 20 years of my life loving drinking - now I hate it.
I wish tomorrow is again a sober day and I'll find some power to resist it..
Thank you from your story mate!

It is extra strange for all of us - so in the hour you are in right now - look around and think just of it .... is it tea time in your best cup? Or is it stretch time? Is it time to watch a new movie ? Just don't do evil out of despair - and hang in there - I have lost my energy - but will encourage those who still have it - maybe we will be around for the next stage (feudal, industrial, capitalist) and then we can benefit from being good people.

Melanie, ask yourself do you need it or do you want it??? If you don't need it then you never wanted it. And ask yourself, would a drink help?? We both know it wouldn't. It would only create more problems if not bring back any old problems. Be 100% honest with yourself. If you fall off the wagon, get up and get back on the wagon . Never stop trying, never give up. You can do this, keep the FAITH.

    I can stop drinking.
But when I’m with friends or in certain environments I get easily lead.
Unless I just completely shut away from the outside world, which is impossible, I don’t know how to stop

It’s a great idea to have some kind of substitute, if you really feel for drink then you might say “I’ll have a coffee instead”, or a cup of tea, or drink a large amount of water then (for me at least) the craving sort of disappears. And as soon as you start to actually experience the benefit of being sober (waking up feeling great and refreshed, not being hungover, more energy, everything just feels clearer and more positive) it’s a great motivator to keep that going. I’ve never had a problem with booze but every now and then I’ll go a week without it and I’ll participate in stuff like sober october, it really feels like a community thing with a good cause. Then having a few drinks on the first of november with friends feels great and you don’t feel any guilt in doing so.

I’m struggling with sobriety, I work in a bar as a bartender, most of the people around me drink and are in the same industry so it’s becoming a little lonely. But I feel this is the best advice I could have ever heard. ONE DAY AT A TIME. I didn’t drink for the past couple days but now I’m sitting at home alone watching videos…I guess anything helps!!
Good luck to everyone on the same journey
