An ACL injury is not just a physical battle, but an emotional rollercoaster as well. In this candid video, I open up about the mental and psychological challenges I faced throughout my ACL recovery journey.
From the initial shock and devastation after the tear, to the anxiety of waiting for an MRI confirmation, the identity crisis after surgery, the draining boredom and fear of setbacks during rehab, and the lingering doubts even years later - I take you through the emotional ups and downs every step of the way.
Drawing from my personal experience, I share coping strategies that helped me get through the toughest mental phases, validating the struggle that often goes undiscussed with this type of injury.
Whether you've torn your ACL or are supporting someone who has, this video provides an honest look at the emotional toll and offers guidance on prioritizing your mental health throughout the grueling recovery process.

I have pulled my cruciate ligament and meniscus twice on the same knee. life forever changes both good and bad. The mental part is absolutely the most time-consuming aspect of it all. Everything from your friends asking you if you want to go out and do things, but you have to stay at home because your knee is sore, to genuinely fighting with your thoughts yourself. Thanks for sharing, always nice to hear you talk.

Thank you so much for sharing this. A must listen for any ACLer who is getting ready to go back on the field but is still a little scared.

I’m 15 years old and just completely tore my ACL and meniscus in my last soccer game. I’m scheduled for surgery on June 17th and man did this hit home today. I have been so depressed lately, sports were my everything and not being able to play has been killing me. I relapsed back into self harm and have been really struggling. My parents are going through a divorce right now and honestly everything in my life just feels like is falling apart. My hopes to play in college, a fun summer, and using soccer to cope with life at home. I’m am struggling so hard right now and i don’t feel like it will ever get better. Your video has brought a sense of comfort and hope to me so thank you! Even with that i still feel like im not going to be able to make it.

I’m so sorry for all that you are experiencing at once. It sounds like a lot. Take things one day at a time. Focus on finding other things that can be fulfilling, and maybe even exploring new passions (art, learning an instrument, reading a new type of book). This process is hard, there’s no denying that - but it gives you a chance to find new ways to cope with life and stress which will be so beneficial as you continue to live life. I know it doesn’t feel this way now, but this whole process can be a gift in a lot of ways. You may become an even better athlete because of the injury! You’ve got this 🙏🙌💪

I am having my surgery in a few days. I will be watching a lot more of you during my recovery period. I am already feeling a lot more supported by watching you talk about your experience in such an honest and well-structured way. Many thanks, and keep on inspiring.

I’m 2.5 months post ACL reconstruction surgery. Thank you for this video! It’s normalizing my experience - the frustrations and fears, the back and forth of progress and the setbacks, the temptation to compare and look for an official timeline of where I should be… The mental/psychological part of recovery is super tough.

It absolutely is, and a lot of people think once they get 1 year or 2 years out, the mental battle is over- but it just shifts and becomes a new sort of dance to learn. All part of the process 🙏

my friend tore acl and told me "you'll never mistake this sound for anything else, like a whip hitting the ground" and when I tore mine, also playing voleyball, I heard it and thought "dude was right".... yeah I just felt fragile, that I won't be able to do sports I love, fearing future injuries, but it's been 1,5 year now, haven't fully recovered my muscles on the operated leg yet, but returned to snowboarding past winter even did 180:))) so as long as you keep going you're alive!

This wasn't my experience at all. In fact, I didn't hear anything. My knee just gave out almost like it dislocated. Complete acl tear.

Had my acl repair 2 weeks ago, and started PT yesterday. Hoping to return to jiu-jitsu in Feb. Thanks for the video! Wish me luck!
