I can see where you are coming from in regards to Elden Ring Erdtree nomination. But the only thing is you can't access that part of the game without the base game. So its kind of hard to keep the two separate. Just my opinion.

    • @noctoi

Yep, and it's also not as long as the full game. It's what used to be known as a "major content patch" not a full length expansion to the original game. It's a BIG one, but it's not a 'new game' in size, play time OR new (unrecycled) content.

If I could play Shadow of the Erdtree without owning Elden Ring base game then I would say it belongs. However it requires Elden Ring base game to play it so it should not.

That was what I was thinking. The base difference between a new game and a DLC/expansion is if you need to buy the old one to play. The closest I think I have seen to games which blur the lines are stuff like Total Warhammer and HoMM3.

I honestly don't care if remakes/DLCs get nominated for awards and I think people who otherwise claim they don't care are outing themselves as frauds if they complain about it. Blood and Wine won Best RPG back in 2016 and that was indeed the best gameplay experience I had from that year. RE4Remake didn't win any awards but it was one of the best gameplay experiences I had in a packed 2023. These efforts, when effort is clearly applied and, in remakes' cases, ample love, care, and respect is paid to the original source material while updating it for the modern era, deserve some kind of recognition, especially when they're still better than original games they're competing against for attention.
Do I want Shadow of the Erdtree to win GOTY? I don't know since I haven't played it yet. I have played Balatro and love it, but I don't know if it's GOTY material even in a lackluster 2024 (though it should run away with Best Indie Game and Best Handheld Game). Metaphor is a game I'm looking forward to finally playing, especially since I'm a big fan of Atlus RPGs. Meanwhile, I'm morally opposed to giving money to China so I won't ever be playing Wukong. Maybe it wins GOTY, but if it doesn't, I'd understand why. At this rate I'll never buy a PS5 so I'll have to wait until Astro Bot comes to PC, possibly (but if PS+ is required, forget it). I've never been a Final Fantasy person so I support you in your repulsion of Rebirth ❤

I think it would be good to create a new category for DLC's and Remasters. The work and effort would get recognized and encouraged without overshadowing completely new games. I fear that letting the DLC's and Remasters into existing categories would stagnate an already strained area of creativity. It was curious to learn about upcoming DLC's essentially taking the place of new, sequel games.
Edit: AAA studios and publishers currently can't take alot of risk which has resulted in a trend towards safer and less creative options. This is the area I had in mind when writing the above.

The problem is that DLC is not a game, it is an add on to a game. It can be anything from a new skin to a expantion sized thing. Remasters, reworks, have you seen the state of remasters and reworks? Most of them take a good old game, add a lot of moden audience into it and push it as it is the main game, because many corpos just remove the option to buy the older game, to get the remaster pushed out insted. Remasters and reworks are cash grabs on a good day, idelogical charged things on a bad day.

    • @SilverBullet3626
      @SilverBullet3626 2 місяці тому

@EcardEcardian For our current view of and definition of DLC, that is true. However, the recent news reveals that DLC's may be changing - DLC's being used to publish sequels. For example, Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening. It is an expansion DLC that takes place after the original story. You can play a existing character (from Origins) or a completely new one. You have new party members and a new Big Bad Evil to fight. The content is decently sized. You don't need to play Origins before Awakening; Awakening is on the main title screen.
I don't know if the new DLC's will match some of the Expansions of old, but if they do it right, the DLC's will be stand alone. It is possible, and maybe even probable, that these DLC's should be called something unique to set them apart from the current DLC's.

@@SilverBullet3626 Hold the phone, DLC used to publish a sequel? I only seen so far EA doing the bridge DLC. Because they was unable to rap up their games. DA Aw was not an DLC at all, it was a DAO expantion. It is few that does DLC that has the same size as a expantion of old. Few just send out a new area, new assets packs, etc. DLC is not a new game. It is an add on, expantions are still not an new game. It might look like it, but it is not. Because you still need to have the base game regardless sense they share the same logic, same base code so to speak. Expantion packs are normally built on top of the base game.

@@EcardEcardian A sequel being published as a DLC was mentioned in the video. Timestamps of 9:30 - 11:24. That's not how DLC's are currently handled, but a dev mentioned this is the direction that we could be moving towards. This has pros and cons like everything else. On Steam, players can easily see that a sequel has been released under the "DLC" section of the library game page. A con could be handling of the hard copies. Publishers could treat it like it's own release or not sell hard copies. The sequel DLC's would need to be priced appropriately to have a better chance of working.
I think defining Expansions versus DLC can be a little gray. There is a chance I am the odd duck here. I believe the Expansions are a form of DLC, but DLC's are not always Expansions. Like a Golden Retriever is a dog, but not all dogs are Golden Retrievers.
True, Expansion packs are built on the same game, but when you can run it from the Title/Menu screen, does that make it standalone? Some might say No. I feel a little different. Most DLC's require players to start the main game and find a specific area to trigger the new content which could take hours to access (or the time can be reduced by loading up a previously saved game). If I can access the new story from the Main/Title page, it feels standalone to me. I admit I am not everyone and that's ok. There is also no guarantee that this is how sequel DLC's would be handled. This is an enjoyable conversation. I love exchanging knowledge and thoughts about games and the industry.

@@SilverBullet3626 As the user you do not normally see the inner workings of the software.
If you try to just install Dragon Age Awakening it will not function, you are thinking of the user interface. If you need the base game to run anything, it means that thing is built on top of the base games logic.
A spin off, stand alone, that is a title in its own right. It belongs to the same ip, same uni, but software vise it is own game, it has its own sorce code.
When it comes to hard copies, I assume you mean compact disks or digital video disc, that can be done, like Sims 2 did it back in the day, a ton of compact disks where made,
There where many DLC to that game.
The thing is that DLC already covers that bit, they can be anything from a skin to a expantion, to make a bridge DLC to a new game, that has been done. It is just not that common to see.
Expantions have been around longer than internet was even a thing. 1980s somewhere did game makers starting to make Expantions, and there was no internet back than. When internet came around, it was super slow. DLC was not even on the map. Expantions worked back in the day as a popular game, that sold well, always got an expantion pack so that the game devs can get people intressted in their games, also moeny to have something to live on when they make their 2nd game.
Fast internet and DLC, I think the Sims 2 started this DLC gallore, anyways better internet ment that it was faster to work on the game and add in things, fix things, the common thing is balances fixes, patches to take care of some bugs. DLC can also be used as: I made a game people what more stuff, can just add something small to get people stay in the game, untill a big DLC comes around that they have to pay for, live service games lives and dies on that.
ESO, that game has like a dusin DLC. Easy to make countent and always have a stady money flow.
But it does not always have to be that aggressive, look at Warframe. It has most of its content for free, if you what the primes one day one without farming, sure you can buy it. Pay to skip grinding is a common thing. Im saying that because this game as well has DLC. Prime Access.

Re the DLC/Xpack thing, I think there needs to be a NEW category for DLC - Shadow of the Erdtree IS a DLC, there are a LOT of reused assets including boss fights and while it's long, it's NOT a new game/full length chapter. I haven't played it because I'm relatively poor and living in Australia - the land of the overpriced recreation price tag. I DO think that there needs to be a re-defining of what constitutes DLC as opposed to expansion pack though. Back in Vanilla WoW days for example, and expansion pack was essentially a whole new game. It was the new content that you'd be playing for the NEXT TWO or more years. There were "major content patches" in between expansions (what we'd NOW call DLC's) and they were new small chapter updates or a couple of small features that would keep the game fresh and keep players occupied for another few days at most.
*Expansion Packs* are a reasonable addition to the "best game" category because they are literally a new FULL GAME sized chapter, offering equal or more play time than the original game. DLC - even longer and more nuanced DLC - should absolutely NOT be counted in a Best Game category. I also don't think *remasters* should be eligible for best game, but *remakes* are much more complex and often look like a completely NEW game with part of all of the story reused. Remasters though? Nope. If all you're doing is giving the SAME GAME a facelift you're double dipping and it really feels like cheating/playing favourites by the judges.
The problem is, it's painfully obvious that the "judges" don't understand the subtleties between these kinds of game content, so they are going by who pays the most or can offer the most payment by exposure for their platforms.
There's no doubt it's basically a circle jerk with advertising benefits. It's been a long, LONG time since the game awards actually meant anything. It sucks because - like with the tv and music awards - it's supposed to reflect how the CUSTOMERS feel about the art, NOT how the investors feel. 😒

The secret cabal make their own rules afterall, so not surprising that some choices are questionable. It kinda feels like they gave BM Wukong and Stellar Blade a nom or two just to throw us a bone, maybe to look credible as a gaming awards show should be. Sadly other games were snubbed. SOTE deserves recognition, but it's an expansion to the main game, kinda weird and unfair it got a goty nomination?! Idk, maybe I'm alone in thinking that.

Game Awards, what a load of bollocks that thing is. Fells like pushing ads and woke games, not any good games that people enjoy. Stilly to make DLC into a thing, after all DLC is an add on to a existing game and can be anything from a new skin to a expantion pack. Remakes and remasters, that is a cash grab on a good day, idelogical charged thing on a bad day. They missed games, The First Descendent. Voting in a Awards, I assume their joury will just overrite because it does not fitt their world view. I do not get it, best on going games, not once have I seen Warframe there. That game has been around sense 2013. Their lists sucks. They miss the good games and bring up games I never heard about. Better if they made the voting like the players get to type in a game that is from the same year as the Awards is runing for. Because they force people to pick from the games they have chosen not what people like, because look at the numbers, they normally say what is going on.
