A broken down Renault Trafic? Nothing unusual there.. 😂 My yellow roadside assistance van rescues lots of Trafics/Vivaros. Slave cylinders and gear linkages are the most common failure points i see.
wish i could dude. im off to the garage now to go and grab some tolls out of the back of the van and start running to jobs on the Ducati instead. sitting at home is driving me nuts!
hey hey monkey - Exactly, my local Enterprise does a Vivaro for £240/week. You might not get all your stuff in it, but much better than losing £1000-£2000/week of work.
2:30 interesting first time i've ever heard the hood of a vehicle called a bonnet sure is neat learning how british words differ from over here in the states :)
These vids are very interesting , addictive . Don't know how I got started on them. I'd just like to say on this particular vid , all the people , comments below saying Renault vans are crap , Renault vans are always breaking down, not reliable - blah - blah - . The guy has done something like 200,000+ miles in this van . The only thing that's ever gone wrong / let him down , is THIS - the clutch. That's pretty good. You expect a few things , and clutches do need doing from time to time . I am NOT defending Renault vans by the way . I am not particularly a fan of Renaults at all. But this one has been great . One failed clutch in 200,000+ miles and 8/9 years is excellent. A guy I work with has had two complete transmissions in a fancy new Mercedes van in the last 3 years , . He got it in 2015 and has less than 40,000 . Also it had to be rescued while out of town for a failed fuel pump a while ago. Mercedes vans are supposed to be super-reliable! My personal favorites are Japanese vehicles. I have a Toyota pickup which has been completely trouble free from new (20 years old this year) and my current work van is a Mazda , (a Japanese import). Again it is trouble free. Just change the oil and look after it and you just get in it and drive it. BUT , You can't fault this guys van for needing a clutch in 200,000 and 8/9 years of trouble free service!
Jerry Barbender agreed, I hate blanket statements like "X vans are crap". WHAT ones specifically, from what year, how has it been maintained and driven, etc. There are so many other factors that decide how well it will hold up. Its infuriating. Also because I have a Renault master from 2006, hehe.
I have free van rental through my insurance when my van is off the road for repair. I just had complete clutch kit £175 and labour £350 same van. My next van will be a fiat ducato with the 2.3 Iveco engine.Probably the best commercial engine on uk roads.
Watching this I realized you walked right past me when you dropped your van off for the clutch repair. Fellow electrician, must have been on my lunch break!
put in first gear and start the engine,I had the same problem with my renault trafic two times cylinder slave gone.I had to sell it those vans dont like london traffic
Most vehicles will not allow an engine start with the chutch engaged. Yes, the pedal is down, but where is the switch or sensor giving the position? And have you ever driven in london traffic? 100 feet movement is GOOD!. I would not try it.
It happens to the best of us, get the wheels fixed and move on with life. Had my Alternator crap out back in November, had to cancel one client and reschedule 2 others.
Now in that situation as you walk away from the garage, were you worried about leaving all them tools in the back of the van, IE so thieving little shit at the garage might nick something ?
I d rent a car or a van same day. Cheaper do it in Heathrow but buy minimum insurance that way car cost you 3-12 £ a day. Done it lots of times. Plus if you have breakdown cover they come rescue you and provide with another vehicle for at least 3 days ( aa cover cost me 12£ a month, also if you broke down far from home they book a hotel for you. All those 12 £ a month included)
For me on a relaxing day, I'd like to (well if I had a backyard) sit in the backyard on a day thats about 20 Celcius and have a few pints and just relax in nice weather.
Just been binge watching your videos this weekend after youtube reccomended your channel, very interesting seeing some of the jobs, learning a bit and your sense of humour (keep swearing!). You should set up a Patreon account, I give to a few channels I like.
My cousin has a vivaro that is about to have its second MOT and it won’t pass with out a lot of money spending. It’s stuff that a 45k mile van shouldn’t have
How come the vans not in warranty, it seems like only a few months since you bought it? Enjoy the time off, relax and recharge your batteries, maybe even get your nails done.
Hi Thomas. Im a new follower to your videos. Really like them and find them quite interesting. Ive just gone self employed since about 6 months ago and has been interesting as a spark to say the least. Don't worry too much about the van breaking down. At least you haven't got a land rover like me, which likes to break at least once a month for minor things to sometimes quite major. last time it decided to go I was going to London from Devon to do some work for my aunt and well I guess I didn't have to pay for diesel most the way there. Thinking of maybe doing some video stuff like you but need to get my business sorted first. Keep up the good work!
1:40 - it is a matter of planning, mate. My motto is: If I cannot sleep from work, f*ck the work! This is valid literally and figuratively. All in all, we have to have some free time to spend - that is the sense of life after all. I don't know if you have a girlfriend, spouse or kids, I guess you would figure out what I am talking about.
That garage, just like Tom's business, will have bookings of it's own - they likely wouldn't have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs waiting for work. You should know this if your are a mechanic.
I thinks all the weight of tools, ladders, parts., etc., having that all the time in the van, that helped to the clutch to wear out faster. Assuming you didn't skips any schedule service as the VAN manual says to do.
Clutches aren't part of the servicing. If they're cable it's checked for play. If it's hydraulic there's nothing you can do with it other than flush and replace the fluid. Clutches either work or they don't. They can't be serviced only replaced.
Clutch is a consumable part. Maybe workshop would've picked up evidence of beginnings of leak, but in the main these slave cylinders can pop at random & usually at the worst possible moment.
Thomas, are you living in Hampstead? There are a lot of actors, musicians, artists and writers living there. It is one of the most expensive places in England. From Wikipedia: "Today the high housing prices make it impossible for anyone other than the richest to settle in Hampstead". And you said you could not afford to live in Chelsea or Kensington ;)
Hi Tom, sorry to hear that you've had clutch problems with your van but haven't you got an electric one you can use too? ⚡ I'm a driving instructor and a few years ago I had a clutch fail on a pupils driving test needless to say I had to pay for another test for my pupil then the car was off the road for two days but it got sorted ok 🚗 You're right, I don't understand how people can afford pampering either, getting their nails done etc 😛 What you want to do is have another channel called Thomas Nagy Chills Out... or Thomas Nagy Goes Shopping or Thomas Nagy On The Tube... or how about this... Thomas Nagy Catches The Bus... Heavy Stuff or better still Shit Happens Fuckin' Meow! 🙀 Just thoughts, your videos don't always have to be about electrical, they're all quiet entertaining, keep them going and don't forget to have a break from time to time, you work too much, I know time is money and all that but you know what I mean 🙄 Regards Alec RG AKA Alec Green 😀 From Wirral.
I had a clutch go bad on my car and it slowly went bad. I mean you could feel it slipping. And I got it fixed for $400.00 and only took like 6 hours. Maybe it was just a broken cable? I don't trust ANY mechanic. Did you try try to look at it and google it yourself? What did you pay for the repair?
yeah on this van it wasnt the clutch that had died it was the slave cylinder which they decided to mount inside the front of the gearbox. the clutch itself was actually ok considering it had done 210,000 miles. to replace the slave cylinder they had to pull the gearbox out though so it made sense to change the clutch anyway. cost just a snip under £800.
Just wait until your injectors go. 😬 Personally never trust any French van! I'm sticking with my trusty T4! 241k and still on original clutch, gearbox and engine! Keep up the good sparking! 👍🏻
hey PJ, yeah this is the first time she had ever let me down. ended up being the slave cylinder. but because its inside the gearbox it made just as much sense to put a new clutch pack in aswell. i will run it now until i either have an injector issue or some other major breakdown and i'll get a new van. have a good weekend buddy! ;-)
"Id like to take a day off and get my feet done", lol you think these women work? Also, I don't know about London prices but a clutch is usually about £300-500. Its not that much work, someone who knows what they're doing can do it within a day. Its not that hard to gain access to the transmission.
depends how you look at it. a job which i am about to start which is rewiring a flat; yes there will be some math involved as there will be tons of cabling to run in, so i will have to calculate tray sizes, cable sizes, cable length runs etc etc. its not too dramatic though, saying it like this sounds worse than it actually is. and there are also alot of useful app's which you can download to help you along the way when it comes to calculating cable sizes etc.
Working on my level 3 NVQ before going onto do a HnD, any particular apps you can recommend? I was originally looking at becoming an electrical Engineer hence my course choices but now I've had a change of heart and want to graft As a sparky 👌
To be fair the clutch doesn’t just go. You should have booked it in around your jobs when it started slipping. Enjoying the videos though. London looks like a madhouse to work in. Big money but big hassle.
Chris Ryan as he said in another comment, it was the slave cylinder. Those DO just go. I'm a mechanic, and there's really no warning in most cases when that goes. Too bad this one seems to be an internal slave cylinder.
The clutch CAN just go, depends what part. Clutch cable? those just snap, no warning. You never know until youve had it looked at whats exactly wrong and until then all you know is the clutch doesnt function. You dont know wether its the entire clutch, clutch cable, slave cylindar etc. until youve had it checked out.
Don't sit in the van...go and get your nails done while you have the time...

Watched many Thomas vids, now I have a voice in my head saying “What would Thomas do”.
Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.. Would love to see you working round Tower Hamlets and places like that.
Dude....grab all your tools and stick em in a rental till your vans repaired
Easier said than done

Just Hire a van !
The rental companies here in New York have rental trade vans specifically for your situation. $150 USD per day rental fee.

Well, the train was electric.
Ever consider an automatic van being in London . Cheers from oz
In hindsight you should've got that guy from youtube who fits clutches in driveways in about 2 hours to fix it haha :D
U love it
Possibly clutch slave cylinder if the clutch has suddenly gone, common on trafics
Don't let it stop you. I was meant to be. Use the time off Wisley turn it into a blessing
Ooooh snap on trick!
Very interesting and informative videos you are doing really nice job.
cheers buddy!

If you was north of watford you would have your van back in three days, max,
thought they lifted it up for illegal parking when I saw the quick pic on youtube list :)
4:20 there you have/had plenty of time to get your nails done :D
If you're mainly working in the smoke then get a auto transmission.

if you want the days off just marry a rich guy like those women getting their nails done
or just wait till one of those women becomes a widow. At least it is easier from moral point of view :)
But then you’d end up with a load of bent nails.
Just FYI as a mechanic, if that clutch took more then a day to do then they are creaming it 😂
That garage, just like Tom's business, will have bookings of it's own - they likely wouldn't have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs waiting for work. You should know this if your are a mechanic.
Clutch went in My Trafic £860 to fix

nah, i ended up just doing four days of small jobs and running around on the tube to different jobs ;-)

He's had the van since 2009. Say's a lot about how reliable it is.

They earn their money at night but you probably wouldn't like that part.
ITS a Renault. French cars you know. They arr known for breaking down
The clutch went, that's all. Any car can get the problem. He's had the van since 2009 which says a lot about how reliable it is.
Jens, he replied to PJ Electrical and he said it is the first time it has let him down.Don't assume how reliable another persons van is.
Maybe french, but the DCI engine is actually Nissan and very reliable. And in fairness, most modern Renaults are pretty good.
get a vacation, you've deserved

Chris Ryan as he said in another comment, it was the slave cylinder. Those DO just go. I'm a mechanic, and there's really no warning in most cases when that goes. Too bad this one seems to be an internal slave cylinder.
Heavy footed. You would find yourself putting more revs on to pull away if slave cylinder failed then the clutch pedal would go straight too the floor
The concentric slave cylinder fails, the seals leak suddenly and you lose clutch hydraulics.
