  • Had an emergency callout to a kitchen fire at a rented property where I had to make safe the fixed wiring electrics after a fridge had caught fire. The poor tenants had just moved into that flat; the switched on the fridge and bang ... it just burst into flames.

    Re: cable ties
    We pop rivited a length of double sided velcro to the bottom of ours, leaving a leash we can reusably secure the ladders to stop the noise.
    Saves a fortune in cable ties and reduces the waste plastic.
    The kind of velcro cable ties used in server rooms to wrap big bundles of cable.

    Have done a lot of fire damage repair and here it is mostly the motors in old units that start the fire. Plus two inches of dust bunnies under and behind the appliance doesn't help. Vacuum under and behind your fridge once and a while boys and girls!

    The fire would appear to have been caused by a faulty appliance, that being said, I very much doubt an electrical safety check (EICR) or PAT test would have avoided this. A lot of these manufacturers are aware of defects on their products but simply refuse to recall them, the UK government need to get a lot tougher with these big companies.

    I think this video highlights the importance of fire safety in general. The appliance caught fire, there are ways to reduce this risk by ensuring you follow manufacturers instructions in terms of unpacking the appliance out of the box and location. Then reducing what can catch on fire - this is clearly the tricky one due to it being housed inside a cabinets which are flammable. But then looking into fire detection, fire fighting equipment, fire stopping etc.... but also ensuring the electrics are to a good standard. This fire engulfed the room fairly quickly and it is important to reduce the reaction time because a fire can start any time of the day.... We are more vulnerable at night when we are asleep so detection and alarms are vital. There is a lack of education on smoke alarms in our homes. Many believe they are just a nuisance but they are very easy and low cost to maintain. It really doesn't take much. So I advise many electricians get clued up on fire detection in homes, educate themselves on BS5839-6 and Part B of the Building Regulations and educate home owners / landlords / tenants on fire as well as electrics.

    It is pretty alarming how any major appliance or electronic device can burst into flame without warning at any given time as seems to be occurring more often.There were issues with certain brands of dishwashers here in north America doing the same, starting on fire without warning and of course the materials they are made of or contain are by no means flame retardant. I am sure the fridge that once was in this kitchen was not insulated with fiberglass or rockwool but with some sort of expanding foam that once its been ignited, combusts rapidly and produces thick black smoke.

    I find fridges are often fitted with a 13a fuses but the flex and internal cabling are often 0.75mm. In that situation you could easily have a fault condition that causes the fuse not to blow and wiring to catch fire. I usually switch them out for a 3a or 5a fuse instead. Seems to be more and more common to find household appliances with under-rated flexes, i assume to save money.

    • @NOWThatsRichy
      @NOWThatsRichy 6 років тому

      The Zanussi fridge freezer I bought last year has only got 0.5mm flex on it but 13a fuse in the plug, but it was always said that you need a 13a fuse to handle the current surge when the compressor starts up.

  • @1989Chrisc

    The fridge was probably charged with r290 which is a downfall for domestic fridges in my opinion. R290 is propane. And its standing pressure in the fridge is about 6 or 7 bar.. probably why it became uncontrollable so quickly. A live cable was probably touching the copper pipe and burst a hole when the fridge was switched on causing the propane to ignite

    If one had a CO2 fire extinguisher it possibly could be used to put out such fires if the cabinets had sufficient holes for that (like for example most modern working machines have a dedicated hole where to inject the fire extinguisher). Being such a small and closed space a somewhat small amonut of CO2 might work.

    That's pretty incredible. It was supposedly a fridge that started the fire at Grenfell Tower, and we saw how horrible that was. Granted, Grenfell had a lot more issues, but people really don't understand just how fast fire can spread even in a safe, reasonable installation as well.

      Webstack2017Webster. What relevance would that have to a fire engulfing a 24 Storey tower block?

    • @idiotdetectioninprogress
      @idiotdetectioninprogress 6 років тому +1

      Zzyxx Wolfe. All domestic fires spread quickly due to furnishings, fabrics, plastics, these are things which can`t be avoided. So the idea is early warning, in the form of detection, safe exit, and containment to one property. Any dwelling, whether it be Grenfell, or a house, is essentially a separate compartment from it`s adjoining neighbours, fire can only wipe out one property. Believe it or not, this actually happened at Grenfell when it encountered fires in the past. Only having money as God turned it into a death trap.

    • @jaycee1980
      @jaycee1980 6 років тому +4

      The problem with grenfell was how the fire spread. The exterior cladding turned out to be highly flammable. A fire in one flat should not burn the entire building down.
      I guess Webstack Webster is a Tory.

    • @NanoCottage
      @NanoCottage 6 років тому

      Fridges are covered with flammable expanded foam insulation, and cables for the thermostat, light etc are often buried inside the foam. I have found small fridges which consume maybe 150w fitted with a 13a fuse and 0.75mm flex - a recipe for disaster.

  • @rpvitiello
    @rpvitiello 6 років тому +6

    What is with fridge fires in that country?! It seems a fridge fire like that took down an entire tower block. Not saying it doesn't happen but I don't think I have ever seen a fridge fire in the states. I'm wondering if the models sold there have something different about them.

    • @krashd
      @krashd 6 років тому +2

      Different refrigerants maybe, if it's toxic or harmful to the environment like CFC's are then it is banned in the EU which leaves less choice for manufacturers and some resort to flammable refrigerants. Also BEKO sold a bunch of fridges between 2000 and 2006 that like to burn houses to the ground and not all of them were returned.

    • @jaycee1980

      What took down Grenfell wasnt the fact that a fridge caught fire, it was that exterior cladding that had been fitted to the building proved to be highly flammable. Furthermore the building had no working fire suppression.

    • @whitacrebespoke

      The tower block fire was because the cladding had PU foam in just like the fridge

    • @whitacrebespoke
      @whitacrebespoke 6 років тому

      Peter Mulholland the cladding had PU or PIR type foam insulation in it just like the fridge and just like most new homes built since the mid 90s in the form of celotex. The manufacturers have been self certifying on fire safety and thermal values for a long time. Hence the ratings for both have changed since the fire

      In UK we have touring caravans and static caravans or Mobile homes. Caravans some times stay at one site. Mobile homes are called that because they are not permanently fixed like Houses.

    I wonder if it would make sense to use AFDDs for the kitchen appliances. They use much energy and get pretty toasty - might be worth the investment. Can you do a video about your thoughts on that?
    Was the heating disabled in this apartment? Sounds to me like damage by freezing of water around the compressor (which has a basin above the compressor to get rid of condensed water. If the water has cracked the basin by freezing the compressor would have had water on it, which might lead to a spark - which would ignite any oil outside of the compressor.
    If there's enough oil, for example by a leak, the copper pipes would fail pretty soon, igniting the rest of the oil while the pressurized gas in the system would blow the fire hotter and hotter.

    Fridges packed with probably questionable expanding foam, they go up quick, I caught my fence on fire once when I didn't watch a fire stove which was next to an old chest freezer, the foam stuff inside goes up real quick! I guess it doesn't contain any fire retardants..

    Fridge Fires are becoming more common. I really would love to know why? The cheap products being used to make the newer fridges is criminal. Luckily no one was hurt. I cannot imagine the cost of repair. Some people could not afford the repair. Just really sad to see. I guess, one lesson is, invest in a Fire Extinguisher, may save a life.

    Great video.
    There has been significant awareness raised over the past few months with regards to the fire risk from white goods - let's not forget that Grenfell Tower started with exactly the same type of appliance.
    The Communities and Local Government Committee (CLG) recently questioned Dame Judith Hackitt on the interim report into the building regulations and fire safety and there was little consideration of electrical compliance and safety. The committee even questioned her on the effectiveness of Part P - to which she confessed no investigation had taken place.
    Interestingly the committee were under the opinion that electrical appliance and equipment safety came under the remit of Part P? and so it may just be that we have an update to Part P in the future which results in the need to regularly risk assess and maintain electrical equipment in the homes, especially building of multiple occupancy.
    Good times. 😡

    Do you know when the appliances were last tested?
    Do most electricians even bother to test integrated appliances? ...seeing as it's not usually a simple plug-in test and you often have to go in by dismantling the isolator (assuming there is one).

    • @larkhill2119
      @larkhill2119 6 років тому +1

      That does not look electrical. An Electrical fire normally has a longer time frame. There was an accelerant involved there.

    • @robbiemarshall1481
      @robbiemarshall1481 6 років тому

      Most of the time integrated appliances aren't tested, the landlord normally asks for a PAT test portable appliance test and because they are fixed in place they don't come under the pat

    • @alvinashman6371
      @alvinashman6371 6 років тому

      Robbie Marshall- PAT testing doesn't just apply to portable appliances, it apply to fixed equipment too. The correct name for PAT testing is In-service Inspection and Test of Electrical Equipment. Any equipment a landlord provides for use by his/her tenant must be safe to use and fit for purpose weather it be a toaster or intergrated oven.

    • @idiotdetectioninprogress
      @idiotdetectioninprogress 6 років тому

      Alvin Ashman. No such thing as PAT testing anymore, there is no requirement for it.

    There are only two things that can create excessive heat in electricity:
    -Open circuits/high resistance, either heating motor coils or causing arcs
    -Short circuits/low resistance, also causing arcs

    • @firsteerr
      @firsteerr 4 роки тому

      so having a compressor in a confined space with no ventilation while in close proximity to a evaporator coil giving off excessive heat do to its function wouldn't cause heat in the motor then ??? i have in the past fitted extracts and ducting to the backs of big fridge units in restaurants to get rid of the heat because it was taking out the compressors they were going out on over heat

    Most likely scenario. New fridges built in Europe or China the last 5 years, are using R600 butane gas or lighter fluid as the new Eco refrigerant it saves running costs and does not damage the Ozone layer. However, they are also using the cheapest components and tubing. You end up with a small blowtorch in the fridge when the gas leaks from the copper to alloy joints. Because the fridge had been sitting the gas would have built up in the enclosed space then a small spark would ignite the gas increasing pressure and the gas leak. In normal use, the fridge would leak slowly until no longer cooling. Most domestic fridges would contain around 55g of gas. Should you carry a refrigerant leak detector when testing new fridges if you're asked to check the appliance. At least look for corrosion at the joints. Be aware the burning plastic is emitting deadly fumes as well. Make sure the back off the fridge is vented to aid cooling and prevent gas build up.

      If that explanation is true then the fridges would not past British safety standards and as such would be illegal to use.

      All items pass required CE standards when new (well at least the sample does) however all have a risk of future failure. A certain brand of tumble dryer being a good example. I would be interested if anyone has seen one because I worked on them for 30 years and all had fluff on the element and none caught fire they just burned the fluff off as it touched the element. I saw some quite blocked up tumble dryers. One brand had a washer which switched the heater element on the neutral and toasted the clothes when an earth fault occurred every kitchen fire picture I saw in those days had the shell of what looked like that model. TOCs on the live, work fine untill someone wires a socket or switchboard(yes I have seen) up wrong, and like this case all the holes in the cheese lineup.

    • @larkhill2119
      @larkhill2119 6 років тому

      Rasmus: Good idea in case however so far Its a very rare event as in most cases the fridge will stop working before this happens and be removed. Normal kitchen use where extractor fans and doors being opened and closed would disperse any gas. Fat burning is a more likely situation use a wet towel. A normal fridge less than 5 years old only has around 55g of R600a. If built in make sure they have good ventilation, you need it to disperse the heat, thats how they get cold inside.
