I live and work in and around hertfordshire doing floor sanding and fitting and these videos are pretty cool as its direct from the job site and taking us through how things are done. Keep up the work
UA-cam suggested your video like two weeks ago. I was sick at the time and running out of stuff to watch. So I tought let’s give it a go. Now I have watched almoust all of your videos. So nice to see someone that knows what he is doing and gives a crap. And it’s fun to see how things are done in UK. I’m from Finland and im not even an electrician. But had to leave a comment. Keep up the good work!
Randomly came across your channel at the weekend, I’ve got no interest whatsoever in becoming an electrician, but I still love your videos for some reason! Keep them coming!
Hi there Tom, been watching your videos all day today all the way in South Africa. Thoroughly enjoying everything so far, if I ever manage to come visit your side of the world I'd love to spend a day or two working with you. I'm a sparky myself, and I see our codes and regulations are very much the same. I am loving your neatness, correctness and pride in your work. Keep it up mate!
Hey Tom, Accidentally found one of your videos and have now gone on to watch many more of them. I think you are both well presented and quite entertaining and informative....to the point you keep this non electrician (I am a photographer for my sins) interested in watching (and subscribed) your videos. Basically, keep up the good work old boy!
Same I found his channel when watching a big Clive video and the auto play was on and the fire alarm test video auto played after the big Clive video and then that made me watch more of his videos!!
Tom I know how you feel. I've had days like yours as well. I'm a service electrician in Oklahoma City, and I get calls like that too. I throw my tools in, get the job done and hustle to the next one. Good job buddy keep up the good work. By the way I've never installed one of those pneumatic switches, that looks really cool. You guys have all of the neat stuff.
North America is a great place to be a electrician, I worked there for 5 years, best ever, you get a really good salary, work is light when Compared to the UK, etc, I may work there again, hopefully,
I remember going on a two day government-funded course about fire extinguishers when I worked in the public sector and the headline at the end of the whole thing was - never use a fire extinguisher, get yourself and everyone else out of the building. Bonkers !
Haha the reality of this video is so pin point. You can literally see your mind ticking over whether to risk the parking ticket or not. And the mad scramble to the job, chuck the shit inside and just get the job done hahaha I love it
we have the extinguishers at public places locked in a metal box with a breakable plastic window so it can be accessed during fires, and its harder to tamper with
I'm a electrician in America. I watched these videos cause I wanted to see how the work was in your country. 90% of the receptacles lights and mostly everything is different then it is in my country
I also often play the traffic warden dash! I've never thought about installing fire extinguishers, I work mainly for letting agents so I guess it will be worth a chat with them. Funny video btw!
i have 0 intrest in becoming an electrician never even entered my head half the time no idea what your talking about but still binge watch the channel since i found it
On the topic of people getting hurt tackling a fire... I was always under the impression fire extinguishers are to get you out of a fire situation as safely as possible not for you to use to tackle the fire? (Obviously exceptions could be made but as a general rule...)
i put them on afterwards but ended up cutting it out the video as it took too long to discuss it. I'll do a vid just on extinguishers later on. to be honest its a whole video on its own as there is a fair bit to talk about. but im on the case ;-)
Love your stuff mate! Be great if you could do a video on the paperwork you have to do, EIC, MEWC and EICR forms and schedules to get your insight on them!
I seriously hate the pneumatic push light switches. I find they are seriously poor quality these days and many fail within 12 months! Nothing wrong with Bridget Jones mate. It would be good to see a few more fire alarm videos from you Tom
Shameless plug: Search for MS Electronics TDS2 or TDS3 time delay switches. We’ll sort you out with a timer switch that’s much more reliable than those pneumatic ones 👍🏻
Stumbled across your channel the other day after appearing in my recommendations box. Thoroughly enjoy you, your channel and the content. Just as a side note, I'm not a spark nor do I have any interest in Electrickery. You just come across as a very likable and entertaining chap, very competent & knowledgeable in your field :D Keep up the good work (and the swears) Stay grounded too :/
''Oh fire! I better use fire extinguisher to tackle it. I get mildly burned because I went to close. I'll sue the management because I am stupid." Sounds British enough to me.
But there are usually 3 phases, so one house or flat will probably be on a different phase from the neighbouring house. But, yes, as Ian Stevens has said, generally a single phase per property. 3 phase tends to be for commercial/industrial use only.
I was wondering why those timed switches don't exist at all in Germany and I think I deduced why: The way those are installed create a switches wire that will be connected to live at multiple points. Which creates so many error scenarios, e.g. people connecting it to lives from different breakers, people working on it after having disabled one switch and getting electrocuted etc. So it makes sense to me to make it code that every wire only ever has one point where it will be connected to live. And in case you're wondering: German standard for this setup is using momentary switches to engage a central timed relay.
Bart Kuijper Possible the lamp is installed since 60 years and the home owner wish a professional painter? Most normal people do not know that the painter use temponary renovation lamps ...
customers don't use their noggin. i did tree work for a bit and it seemed every time we had a big tree to remove the customer had a brand new fence put up right before we were scheduled to remove the tree.
Hi, Thanks for all your videos, great watching. Any chance you can cover your recommended/favorite/most reliable brands and ranges of switches and sockets, cheers
Have you got any thoughts on minor works certificates tom for instance would that switch you changed fall into that bracket.bit of a grey area int it mate
Does anyone know why I frequently see comments that apparently have replies but when I click on the "View replies" link I see nothing except a "Hide replies" link. This is one of those comments.
A couple of questions. 1) What is the min/max height specifications for mounting the fire extinguishers? 2) Since you mentioned that fire ext's get tampered with in common places, then why don't you/client install fire ext cabinets? I was surprised to hear you say that some places/business's either don't install or remove fire ext's because of public liability. Do you not have a national code mandating fire ext's must be present and in working order??
Just binge watched the whole lot - great fun and learnt a lot. Question for you Tom, what's your view on DIYers doing simple tasks like upgrading a single socket to a double socket, or replacing a piece of T&E from the fused side of a fused spur to an outside light?
Those time delay pneumatic light switches are absolute rubbish. The housing association I work for insist we use the because they're cheap but they don't really save them any money as we get so many callbacks on them. They tend to stick after a while and I find they're quite inconsistent, you'll push the button once and it'll stay in for about 2 minutes, you'll push it in again and it'll stay in for 30 seconds.
Tbh, most landlords I have done work for have converted their emergency lights to LED bulkheads and just leave them on 24/7. For what it costs in call outs and materials to replace the pneumatic switches, it was cheaper to pay the extra electricity at 3W per LED bulk head. love the videos btw.... nice seeing how the other half live/work....
So they are doing away with fire extinguishers in fear of being sued if someone was to use one to escape from a burning building and actually make it out alive. I guess it would be better for business if that person dies in the blaze so that way they can't sue? What a world we live in.
Razer Back It does seem a good addition to your core trade, but why 3 days worth of course. Pop quiz.. what type of extinguisher would you use on an electrical fire and what colour band is on the label?
How much does it cost roughly to install a ceiling fan light fixture from a bog standard b22 light fitting? I've always wanted one, but no idea how easy they're to fit, if it's a do it yourself job, or have someone with experience come and fit it. Thanks :) New subscriber, but I enjoy watching your videos.
Also not updating your phone puts your phone at risk of been compromised (assuming samsung just set it to update at 3am in the morning each day) and your way of thinking is why updates are not optional on google phones and they use a dual partition update so updating done in the background and does not take any longer then restarting your phone once The background update is done ,me pixel 2 phone owner (none of the updating app 20 of 346 taking 30 minuets rubbish )
Has anyone ever noticed, when Thomas opens the read doors of his van, there is always something different attached to the inside of the doors. We've started a sweepstake hehe.
I dont get the switch he used. What does he mean by saying that you can wire it to turn on when you press it or off? Is this a one way switch? Shouldn't it turn on with one click and off again with another? I get the on setting, just not the off one.
It's a timer switch, it stays on for a fixed (but adjustable) time after you press it. This allows people to have the light on when they ascend the stairs but they can't leave it on permanently. It has single pole change-over contacts so if you really wanted to you could use it to turn something off for a fixed time but I can't think what use that might be.
What if you had the pneumatic switch on a floodlight or alarm controlled by a movement sensor and needed to use it to be able to pass a certain sensor (in one direction) without setting the alarm/light off? Then you'd need the push to break functionality. Probably hardly ever used though.
Keep a hammer by the bed in case of burglary and that is an illegal weapon. A small fire extinguisher is reasonable. Blast the burglar in the face and then hit them with the extinguisher. Tell the police that the noise sounded like a fire, so you took the extinguisher to investigate. Job done. I have had a fire and it does sound like someone breaking in.
Interesting that you're still being asked to install/replace fire extinguishers in blocks of flats. Our local fire service no longer recommends their use, and I think a lot of London Boroughs are the same - the general advice is not to install them, because they're often not tested and people aren't properly trained in how to use them. They're also often used to prop open fire doors, which is amusingly ironic :)
Ummm, was that switched wire on the time switch black? Here in Australia that is forbidden, only Neutral can be black. Switched actives are usually White. Thanks for showing your day
And now harmonisation within the EU means black is a live on new installations :) I don't get your point - we don't use white *at all*, and you do. If a house in Australia were wired in English colours, it would not be to standard and would risk confusing people and potentially dangerous. Similarly a house in England wired Australian colours would be confusing and therefore potentially dangerous. What Thomas is showing us is not sloppy, it's just we have a different way of doing things over here that are obviously completely different from the way you do things. It's like a Londoner walking into a shop in France and being surprised if nobody speaks Italian.
If they are dead they can't sue. If they are injured they/their family can sue. if they are dead they are just another victim in a tragic event and the family will have a much harder time suing. (don't quote me on this)
Any chance you can do a B and F word counter on your next vid? Just a bit of fun really as I think the swearing keeps things authentic (ducks for cover) 😉👍👍
Suppose we are at a better stage of fire proofing, early warning and safe exit routes now, than ever before. No need to be a superhero, and the volume one could safely manually handle is very very limited as to what can be done should the worst happen. The bubble wrap I love, that`s great until you leave the lamps on, and it melts to the fitting, unless they are LED of course. Used to get it all the time with masking tape around GU10 spotlights, leave them switched on while the decorations being done, and hey presto, cremated masking tape and adhesive baked onto the whole lot! Better checking when opening the van door please Thomas, lots of cyclists in London.
Stupid idea to have all extinguishers red. I once rushed out to find an extinguisher for a small electrical fire. Automatically ignored the red (water) extinguishers except they were dry powder. My brain said "blue or black", ignore red. I know they have coloured patches but in a panic reflexes kick in. The damage was worse than it needed to have been. Maybe put the red extinguisher in a coloured sleeve?
Hello Thomas, i was wondering, have you had people on the steet recognizing you already? Or maybe calling for your service because they saw you in the vlog? Thanks for the time you spend to make these vids they are very interesting! Ivan
Maybe you just read the update's changelog of your iphone and if they fix the issue you will know that too, other wise you will have this problem forever. also its better to update at least for security reasons.
Sir,you have inspired me to move to London and become a traffic warden!
I live and work in and around hertfordshire doing floor sanding and fitting and these videos are pretty cool as its direct from the job site and taking us through how things are done. Keep up the work

Sean Dunne I find the idea of a call out fee for replacing one switch to be interesting.
Me too!
Very interesting to see the electrical differences between London and here in the U.S. Keep the vids coming!
I enjoy your videos. Like someone that takes pride in their work. Keep it up
Tom I live in the states and just wanted to say I like your work and videos.
Hi there Tom, been watching your videos all day today all the way in South Africa. Love the videos Thomas.

Pretty Easy Day - No Need To Rush Tom Mate

I'm a electrician in America. I watched these videos cause I wanted to see how the work was in your country. 90% of the receptacles lights and mostly everything is different then it is in my country
do you normally use your cutters to strip wire or wire strippers?
The way you throw the tools down for some reason made me laugh
And me.

i have 0 intrest in becoming an electrician never even entered my head half the time no idea what your talking about but still binge watch the channel since i found it
I've never seen pneumatic timers before. Timer lights aren't uncommon in the states, but even the most basic ones from the 90s are still electronic.
Nice vid, lots of little odds made a good compilation
On the topic of people getting hurt tackling a fire... I was always under the impression fire extinguishers are to get you out of a fire situation as safely as possible not for you to use to tackle the fire? (Obviously exceptions could be made but as a general rule...)
Good video Tom ! Congrats on 21K subsribers best wishes from Luke
what brand of extinguisher do you they look good quality one's
Nice one Thomas
**yanks seatbelt** COME ON!!! 😂😂😂
Did you forget the service labels too? Also tamper seal colour for this year is blue along with blue gauge dot..
i put them on afterwards but ended up cutting it out the video as it took too long to discuss it.
So much love for the parking wardens.
Did you not put any sleeving on the switch wire for identification???
3.53
Would have personally sleeved both but fair play least you didn't use tape.👍
I seriously hate the pneumatic push light switches. I find they are seriously poor quality these days and many fail within 12 months! Nothing wrong with Bridget Jones mate. It would be good to see a few more fire alarm videos from you Tom
Shameless plug: Search for MS Electronics TDS2 or TDS3 time delay switches. We’ll sort you out with a timer switch that’s much more reliable than those pneumatic ones 👍🏻
What, if anything is the standby current on these electronic ones? Also, are they like pneumatic switches, not requiring a neutral core?
In the backround at the start of the video I was a Miele W1 Tumble Dryer

''Oh fire! I better use fire extinguisher to tackle it. I get mildly burned because I went to close. I'll sue the management because I am stupid." Sounds British enough to me.
What screwdriver set do you use?
question- what is the voltage there in london and how many phases come into the building? im in the US we have 120/208 mostly and 2 phases minimum
230 v single phase
415v 3 phase
But there are usually 3 phases, so one house or flat will probably be on a different phase from the neighbouring house. But, yes, as Ian Stevens has said, generally a single phase per property. 3 phase tends to be for commercial/industrial use only.

0:35 Completely agree, abstract art has absolutely no meaning or purpose whatsoever.

Mr.Mister wrongful death payment is cheaper than a life time of injury payments.
“What a world we live in” - sponsored by lawyers.
Would likely replace fire extinguishers with sprinklers or something in that case.
Agreed.
Only on small fires, but before you even try to attack the fire you need to make sure you can first escape.
So, better sorry than safe? ×Faceplanet×
Quick question Thomas, what do you charge for fire extinguisher servicing, just wondering if it could be something I could add to my services?
Cheers
Razer Back It does seem a good addition to your core trade, but why 3 days worth of course. Pop quiz.. what type of extinguisher would you use on an electrical fire and what colour band is on the label?

Did u say Baker Street , like in the song ?
No he meant Baker Street, the one where the fictional Sherlock Holmes had his residence at 221B. (They are of course one and the same.) ;-)
Hi Tom, do you work for one particular estate agents only?
Enjoy your videos, more of these doing different jobs etc, bit longer if possible. Cheers

Need some new screwdrivers, recommend Any?
Wera Kraftform, version depending on what you want to do. For electrical work the insulated version of course.
Always Wera
Wiha slimfit

Ummm, was that switched wire on the time switch black? Here in Australia that is forbidden, only Neutral can be black. Switched actives are usually White. Thanks for showing your day
Red is Earth Black is live, in Germany shocking stuff.
He sleeved the black conductor with a piece of brown sleeving. Common practice for a 2c & earth cable in a live and return switch scenario.

Would have thought more excitement would have occurred after beating the traffic warden. One of the enemies of the on call spark
Crikey, who calls an electrician to replace a cordless doorbell?
A rich landlord.
It baffles me too. Folk with more dough than sense I suppose, it wouldn't happen oop north!
When you're making £100 an hour in your main job, you'll gladly pay a tenner to replace a doorbell.
It's very common
People with better things to do.
More vids! More vids! More vids! lol
love the swearing its great
what not use all foams? safer than water especially if the fire involves electrical fires
6:30 you bought a nasty cheap doorbell for what turned out to be a posh flat! A nice Honeywell one would be good here. Too late 🙂.
Hello Thomas, i was wondering, have you had people on the steet recognizing you already? Or maybe calling for your service because they saw you in the vlog? Thanks for the time you spend to make these vids they are very interesting! Ivan
