LYRICS
My friend David was a good kid
He had my back, always knew he did
He was different than most
And maybe I was too
And hanging out with the in-crowd just wasn't our thing
There was a whole lot more than we could see on these plains
Well, some people just seem to get stuck, and hang around
It's college or trade school for those with the means
There's never been any small town for those in between
Yeah, the poor folks they go to work, or they go to war
I did fifteen hundreds days in the corps
And I got back, nothing looked the same anymore
I got on with the local police, it just seemed to fit
Things have changed
By then David had a daughter and a son
And a rap sheet to prove all the time that he'd done
He was just a burned out, beat down shell of my old friend
And on a three day binge he was speeding through town
And I bumped the wailers just to try and slow him down
He didn't know that it was me, and he took off
Oh how things change
And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain I didn't know if he'd drowned
Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
Is that his mama's a late night ER nurse
And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind
David's wife drops by every once in a while
And childhood stories always make her smile
But somehow we always go back to that day
When I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain, I don't know if he'd drowned
Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
Is that his mama's a late night ER nurse
And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind
And ain't it the times?

To the kids I picked up off the road working as a paramedic you see this play out many times over a career. God bless all the souls I couldn’t help. I’m sorry and hope your families found peace. You are not forgotten I carry you all with me every day!
My nephew crashed his truck and shouldn’t have survived 4 months ago. It was bad! He walked away amazing! His name is David. He survived but still hits the feel!
The spirits are watching over him . Feel the same way just turned 70 the other day the crap I used to pull Damn. Have a gudder life David .
This is the perfect example of a well written song that takes imagination, life experiences and talent to create. The “country” music played on the radio today still blows my mind on its level of popularity. Sorry but I’ll take creative, meaningful music over catchy, top of the chart any day of the week.
Saw Cody and Jamey Johnson together, what a great show. This guy doesn't get enough recognition for his talent.
Amen brother
Both of them are number 1 in my book! Keeping True Country COUNTRY!
That'd be a HELL of a show.
Gold! Lord, I've seen the world with a five-piece band Looking at the back side of me
Let’s blow up the UA-cam algorithm… show this guy as much support as possible
The first verse of this song gives me chills each time
Holy Fuck.. this takes Outlaw Country to a new level...
This may be “Outlaw country” but it’s far better than any other new “country songs” nowadays. I see this as country more than just outlaw country
@@caleblee4856 Fuck yes it is... country... Outlaw Country.. This is just good music period..
@@johnnynitro7523 definitely
Cody is a true musician... He is a complex lyrical songwriter along with crafting outside the lines chord patterns...yet retains the quote traditionally country genre in this song.. as you could almost see some like..say Fleetwood Mac pulling this song off..
@@johnnynitro7523 He sure is a true musician. I love how his songs are written. You’ve broken it down amazingly.
One of my favorite songs ever!!!!
I love how this song is so catchy and up-beat and dancey and the lyrics are so sad. It takes true creativity to mesh those kinds of things into something wonderful. Can't get enough Cody Jinks!
Agreed, I want to rage to it everytime I hear it, But I tear up 11 times outta 10.
This song is so damn good. Is there a reason why they pitched it up? The slower original hits even better.
This song reminds me of my brother David I Love this song
Elison… my friend… this one is for you… rip 🙏🏻😞
Dustin, u r ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, Cody does not get enough recognition. He has the best voice going!! 2 thumbs down. Really?😏🙄
WoW BRUTAL yeah
I don't know if we ever met. But I remember David telling me about you.
Love this song but can't listen to it very often. It hits so very close to home. The first time I heard it I couldn't breathe and absolutely ugly cried, but I love everything Cody Jinks does and if this song sneaks up on me once in a while it's definitely worth the tears!!!

Me too! I swear sometimes I’m the only one that “feels” music. My friends and family think I’m crazy. Some songs you can literally feel in your soul.

Listened to this a million times. Brings the feels every one! This red rocks version is absolutely my favorite and imo the most powerful version of the song. Live it has a bit of a classic Drive By Truckers vibe. Thanks Cody!
