People who go so far as to comment on these videos complaining about the makeup she wears clearly care more about looks than the free educational content we get from this channel. I've personally never even noticed if she's worn makeup in any of her videos.
meh. i dunno. it could be a manifestation of the "tolerance factor". the prettier someone is, the more bs youre willing to put up with. eventually everyone gets sick of the bs, but prettier people last longer, thats all.
I used to tell girls I know they didn't need make up. But I watch a video about the empowerment of make up and the confidence it gives, needless to say I've stopped saying that. If there is anything I learned about this world is everything has shades of gray and avoid working in Absolutes whenever you can.
Yes, I would agree with this re the shades of grey - I find social psychology research *really* interesting, though in some cases it's difficult to reliably apply the findings to real world situations outside of the lab. We can make suggestions and draw inferences, but there will always be individual differences and untested situations.
Does that make you question the validity of lab testing? We see studies in the "news" all the time telling us what's good and what's bad. But a controlled, and therefor limited, lab study really can't relate to all the worlds varied people and circumstance.
I prefer to think of the world as Prismatic rather than "Shades of Grey". Don't like giving credit to a good vs evil mentality (Dark vs Light). All of the shades and shifts of colors analogous to the varied experiences and emotions that go into making choices.
Call it what ever you like, the point was there are no absolutes, everything is nuanced. The fact that you would like to make nuance over the term to use to describe it is an example of this. I'd like to think we're on the same page about this however.
The start of this video just further convinces me that people don't look any different with makeup on. Until makeup was mentioned I thought this would be a video about brains being biased towards listening to people talking on certain sides of the screen
Oliver Morrison strongly disagree. She just had lighting and a very light complexion. In person you would instantly tell the difference in people wearing makeup or not.
Your comedic timing is as effective as your lesson! I loved the way you edited that first layer of lipstick as a way to poke fun at your critics. Keep up the good work! :)
and yes, i have to agree that she IS pretty. I find english accents from her and Ldshadowlady very soothing. please comment if you know ldshadowlady. nobody seems to know her. NOBODY. Also, check out my funny cat videos. :)
I really like the goofy/insightful video. It helped me know more about system 1 and system 2. It was nice to learn and have a nice laugh at the same time, awesome video.
I learned early on that I am over-influenced by people's attractiveness in nearly all contexts, both personal and professional. This produced many surprises and confusingly bad decisions until I figured out I had a significant vulnerability. This applies not only to visual attractiveness (stature, clothing, body, face), but also to audible attractiveness (tonality, well-modulated voice, interesting accent) and intellectual/emotional attractiveness (vocabulary, persuasiveness, empathy). When all were combined together in a sales person, I was a sitting duck and they had the shotgun. My belief and trust were way too easily swayed by my impressions, rather than by the facts and sound reasoning. I've had to develop an array of techniques to guard against my susceptibilities while simultaneously enabling genuine, meaningful interaction. They aren't perfect, and they can unfairly penalize people who are extremely attractive. But they have also revealed the amazing value to be found across all parts of the attractiveness spectrum. One very effective technique that I eventually had to set aside was photography. Putting a camera between myself and others let me view them far more objectively, literally giving me distance from my susceptibility. I became a good semi-pro photographer partly because I could compose a shot to bring out specific aspects of my subject's appearance, basically letting everyone see and feel what my susceptibility had me feel. Photography let me make use of my issue, but it did nothing to help me in the rest of my life. It became a crutch that then became a social barrier. I sold all my equipment, and the only camera I presently own is my phone camera, which I hardly use. I still have a "photographer's eye", and I'm mentally composing photos all the time. Perhaps unfortunately, I also occasionally critique images and videos, though I tend to misread the recipient a bit too often. For a while I did make use of other folks cameras, jumping in to offer a rescue from a potentially terrible selfie. As if it were somehow important that they "look their best" in the photo, instead of letting the photo simply be whatever it will be, documenting the day as it was. It's like having a really annoying super-power. It's often best not to use it.
As a boy, I always assumed I would look less credible if I was wearing makeup. But I can't argue with science, so I'm off to the beauty supply store! Any makeup tips for a newbie?
W.D. Callahan get foundation that matches your skin colour perfectly, don't settle for less, the store assistant can help you find the right shade. once you found the right shade from beauty supply shop next time you can get the same shade in a drugstore. you can use fingers or a damp beauty blender to apply. don't spend more than $10 on mascara since it expires quickly. use concealer (which should be a bit lighter than your skin tone) to cover blemishes or pimples, lack of sleep etc. Seal the make up with a setting spray so that your make up doesn't melt (specially in summer) you can use contouring to accentuate your manly facial features for example emulating a sharp jawline etc (this is a intermediate move). i personally think it would look weird for a man to wear blush or eye liner (unless it's stage make up or for drag) but whatever floats your boat - men and women would want to change/highlight different features of their face. for example women may like to wear red lipstick because thats what's considerded sexy on them, but on men not so much, so may be get a neutral colour of lip products (or don't just some lip balm goes a long way) if it's done right, make up can actually make you seem more credible even if you're a man. also don't forget your brows (I don't fill in my brows so I don't feel qualified to give advice) before making any purchase check on the packaging how long it's gonna last and consider how often you're going to use it. Ive splurged on a foundation that I use everyday although it's only good for 6 months because i know none of it is gonna be wasted.
Confuzzled Tomato My original intention was to be funny, but you took me dead seriously and gave me a considerate, well thought out reply. So now I'm feeling like I should give it a try!
I am so impressed with how gracefully you handled this. Videos like these are why I absolutely love this channel! // Usually, being unattractive doesn't bother me except for when I think about what a huge bias humans have for attractive people, both in the professional world and elsewhere.
Vanessa, I believe you because I respect you. Every video is well produced and well researched, you're somebody who I feel I can trust to tell me about science, makeup or no. You do you :)
Came for the learning. Stayed for the quirky but clever connection to the 100 layer challenge. Leaving with a better appreciation for social psych and for what female UA-camrs go through. The fact that you get comments and e-mail manifestos on your makeup is mind boggling. I used to run track and my dad would tell me "let your legs do the talking." Your content speaks volume. You do you.
The largest contributing factors for beauty is facial structure, something makeup can do little about. Makeup is good for hiding specific flaws, but it can't really do much against genetics.
It is very logical that good-looking people usually fare better. They are often more confident and confidence allows you to grasp those unique offers in life.
There is actually a state where if water is put under the right condition (called the critical point), water can exist in solid, liquid and a gas simultaneously.
If you have to use make up to hide who you are, dont talk to me. If you wake up to me the next morning and you are just as beautiful, as when you use make up to accentuate your beauty, stick around. I personally prefer a face without make up on. Always have.
What an amazing piece of work.. Your concept and and presentation were amazing. You ended up where you started from and you took us through the layers, all the while explaining the nuances of makeup and beauty. It also took a lot of courage to do this. Is it okay if I say guts? Yes, you do look ridiculous at the end, but the way you normally look is a-okay.
"Studies show that attractiveness affects how people perceive your intelligence, credibility and trustworthiness." Huzzah, I'm screwed, then. :-( Ah, well. At least now I'll know why...
darkmage07070777 if you ever worry that being ugly will hold you back, just think that our presidential candidates last year were Donald trump and Hillary Clinton
Being good at something is a sign of intelligence. Intelligence would make that person better at other things too. As for assuming attractive people have better social skills, why shouldn't they? they'd receive more compliments and otherwise be treated better, so there is a higher return on investment for putting themselves out there. Over the course of their life that would make them better socially. Makeup effects perception of effort. Better makeup = harder working / more professional. Obviously the mentioned studies show that we take things further than that, but I wouldn't call it illogical.
I always felt Vanessa has good credibility since I first discovered her channel, because I respect her way of thinking, I appreciated her efforts, and I liked the sense of community in this channel. I might not always agree with the messages, but I feel that's part of what I enjoy about the discussions. Sure, she's pretty with or without makeup, but I regularly make a conscious effort to not base my opinions of people on how they look. In a world full of bias and bigotry, as a white middle-class male, I feel the least I can do is treat everyone as though they're no better or worse than myself. All that being said though, I'm sure I'd fall in line with everyone else with those makeup-credibility tests - I'm still human.
Hey tux! I can not see a difference either but since your name stands for tuxedo you really should be able to edit: I rewatched that part and she honestly looks better without makeup
To be honest.... your way more beautiful without makeup. I'm not saying you aren't beautiful with it on of course. Just saying you have natural beauty. And more importantly all people are beautiful, its just those who like to be bullies or have their own image issues who tell others what beauty is or is not. But if you really want to best truth of all.... beauty is on the inside, not the outside. While we only know you from youtube and what not, your beauty is on the inside. You seem like a great person.
I think I’m an exception to that rule, I even often find women wearing makeup less attractive and especially less intelligent, at least if it is very flashy makeup like the red lipstick you used. If it’s subtitle however it’s a whole different story, but having the talent to show of your most positive features, using a minimal amount of makeup in such a creative and skilful way that most people won’t even notice and also knowing about the relation between attractiveness and success is a sign of higher intelligence in and of itself I would say. Maybe it’s me thinking about how long it takes to do that all the tome and how little time must be left to learn and use your brain so it won’t “decay”
I think it's the opposite. Beautiful people are less likely to be taken seriously and when they do achieve something based on their merit and hard work people associate that with their beauty instead. Most hot women in offices are not taken seriously and when they get promoted, most of the time people spread rumours that she must have slept with the boss or she is in a relationship with him.
The key is to attract not distract. It's about balance. You want people to be thinking about what you are saying, not thinking "Are her lips like...100% lipstick?!.. waat?! are they melting? ohh shit, lips fused together for a second there! lol what's she talking about? ohh shit she want's a response now...".
I saw Sally's video first, and she mentioned that e-mail you got. I'd seen this BrainCraft video sitting in my sub box for a while, and my initial thought was that you were wearing too much lip-stick, and I'd even thought about a comment I would write about it when I got around to watching the video. It wasn't until after I watched Sally's video that it occurred to me that that might be what this video was about, and sure enough, it was. I highly recommend Sally's video; especially to men like myself who have little to no experience with make-up. It's a real eye opener to the realities of what women, especially those on camera, have to go through.
I don't wear makeup at all. In fact, I have never worn makeup and I'm not allowed to wear makeup. But even though I don't wear makeup, I feel confident about how I look. Sure, I do the occasional complaint about the bags located under my eyes and my acne and wish that they would just go away or that I could cover them up, but I know that makeup would just be a financial and an emotional disaster. Plus, I know that even if strangers are going to look at my face, they'd probably just ignore me. And if friends or teachers wanted to talk to me, they won't be disgusted by my lack of cosmetics. Honestly, the only tip I would give to people who want to look attractive is to just keep up your hygiene and your health. If you brush your teeth twice a day, floss at least once a day, wash your face, and get a goodnight's rest, you'll be healthy and look naturally attractive.
Haha, my brain didn't even tried to see if you got makeup or anything, it just went "It's Vanessa, she's right. Now let's stop focusing on the tank top and listen to what she says"
Wow! Beauty, brains and you're great fun to boot too ... just a shame that you're an Aussie ... 8o) ... only kidding, you rock! Did you feel more self-conscious and uncomfortable, as more and more make-up was trowelled on to your boat race? Preferred your look at 0:03, and oh, and I love this flippin channel!
I used to wear makeup every day. Couldn't leave the house without it. For the last few years I wear it less and less. Now I only wear make-up for special occasions (weddings.. etc). Its a choice I have made because, honestly, I don't care and i think its something that is given more importance then it should be. For me it's an almost complete a waste of time, money and resource that, in a small way, has a negative influence on the environment for being almost totally useless to me. I don't need to look glam for my job, I am not actively chasing around looking for a partner and the people that I care about around me don't seem to care about it either (I like to think they like me for me). If someone is making assumptions about who I am, due to how much colourful chemicals I have (or don't have) on my face, then let them. I doubt they will have any lasting effect on my life anyway. I know my worth and I trust those people that are important to me value that worth too.
I didn't knew it had to do with some sort of unconciouss bias, but I always did feel more inclined to talk to, and be around people I consider attractive, and living in a "dangerous city" there's some patterns of haristyle, clothes and other factors that make me really not want to be anywere near some people, of course, I do my best not to be a dick about it.
The more makeup a person wears the less I trust them, I always think they are trying to deceive, have something to hide or lack the confidence to be their true selves. Also makeup covers up freckles which give a face so much character.
there is a planet that answers that question as yes, it has a gravitational pull so immense that the water on it boil of immense pressure and self ignites but the gravity is so strong that it has the h2o compressed as ice, its like a ice ball on fire that will never melt or evaporate in any way i might be wrong about the self ignition but it is viable cause high pressures result in high heat and heat result in flames. also sorry for this i know this wasnt the point of the video but no one seemed to answer the question and i knew it sort of and it was bugging me not tot comment
Anyone familiar with the Veritasium video about thought? He explains the 2 different types of thinking with Drew and Gun, and actually comes to the same conclusion. Drew is lazy and says the first thing what comes to mind, and Gun comes into action when more work is required
Hmm. Well I suppose water could boil and freeze at the same time if it was at both a very low temperature and under very low pressure. But would have to find a few sources to verify that supposition.
I'm not very familiar with people/women heavily treated with cosmetics. I'm actually more ready to interact with women using less make-up but if it makes someone more confident I may just ignore it or consider the motive meant to give a beneficial impression or reaction. After a fashion physical appearance in the day to day fade much like Gorbachev's birthmark or the fire chief's nose in the flick 'Roxanne' [contemporary Cyrano de Bergerac]. My opinion is once you've become accustomed to someone, smaller adjustments don't impact the overall emotions or relations between people. [unless you're of course keyed in to hoping to improve their collaborative overall disposition or happiness, {advantageously?}]
That's technically correct. Two distinct bodies of water can, under the same circumstances, turn into ice and vapor, because of that triple point, but each to a different state. Those two, separate events would be happening at the same time, under the same circumstances, and thus can be said that water froze and boiled at the same time. However, the way I understood the original statement, the same body of water has to transition into a superposition state of both frozen and evaporated water, which AFAIK is impossible for atoms and molecules to do.
Huh, I was thinking about freezing liquids in a vacuum chamber for boiling and freezing at the same time, but apparently everyone else went straight to triple point. I think it would make sense to have answered the question in the video.
You look best without makeup, at least to me. There is something I call "natural beauty" and most women do have it, but they decide to hide it, because of cultural reasons, trends, religion... Of course, apply make-up as much or as little as you feel comfortable. I told this to my psychologist and she confirmed that most men do not want women to wear any makeup. I was surprosed to hear that... Maybe I am getting too old already.
i dint see that you had no make up on until you told so
hippopotamus rainbow uhh you dint.. what does I dint see.. what is a dint?

binky2819 I agree
And whoever makes those lengthy emails should respect Vanessa's decisions!
Lora Coggins well if you read the email it wasn't rude it was just someone who knew alot about makeup and was trying to help her.
I've not seen too many of those in the "top comments" section so I'd assume they're vocal minorities.
Anyone can present information, and making the best presenter allows that information to spread better. So maybe it isn't? Hard to imagine though.
sorry not sorry 💁🏻💄
😂😂
BrainCraft :P you do you Vanessa :D
You should be sorry. That lipstick was hideous. I love your channel anyway.

Don't worry if you wear cosmetics or not.
You *make up* for it with the content
21 layers is crazy and the 100 layers is just pure madness.
We're all mad here.
The start of this video just further convinces me that people don't look any different with makeup on.

This was hecking awesome Vanessa
Who paused the video to read the comments about Vanessa's makeup 😂
mememememe!!!! *raises hand and jumps in chair excitedly*
i'm doing that right now.
Your comedic timing is as effective as your lesson! I loved the way you edited that first layer of lipstick as a way to poke fun at your critics. Keep up the good work! :)
I'm liking the new look Vanessa.
Thank you. 💋
BrainCraft you look great, whatever you do! Keep up the wonderful work! Also that accent, rawr! :)
you might be one of those people who also need therapy (jk!)

Please, oh please, upload the outtakes of this.

Towards the end of the 100 layers you begin to look a bit uncomfortable, lol.
P.S. Loved the video, I hope it was worth the discomfort.
Thank you! It was uncomfortable when it started drying.
The best make-up is the one nobody notices. You play that card perfectly.

I believe that you are so genuinely beautiful that wearing no make up has very little effect on our cognitive biases.

Girl.. it goes on your lips. Hahah. You crack me up, awesome video!
i solved this problem. i don't trust anyone

Woah! The shirt and hat are awesome!! Definitely ordering!
It is very logical that good-looking people usually fare better. They are often more confident and confidence allows you to grasp those unique offers in life.
Can water boil and freeze at the same time ?
You don't look any different with or without make up, you are naturally beautiful!
It seems like the size of your eyes gets larger with each layer past 50! This was the most fun video I've seen in a long time. Thanks!
There is actually a state where if water is put under the right condition (called the critical point), water can exist in solid, liquid and a gas simultaneously.
Yes. Water can boil, freeze and be a gas. Called the triple point. Depends on atmospheric pressure. Parts of Mars can do that. I trust you Nessy!
If you have to use make up to hide who you are, dont talk to me. If you wake up to me the next morning and you are just as beautiful, as when you use make up to accentuate your beauty, stick around. I personally prefer a face without make up on. Always have.

Man I love this channel
I'm sorry, but I couldn't keep watching after the 10th layer, so I opened another tab and just listened.
I paused to see the difference in the first scene. I honestly can't. :-\
She enhanced her eyebrows and wears some mascara. Possibly a bit of foundation too, but the scene is a bit too bright to tell with absolute certainty.
Hey tux! I can not see a difference either but since your name stands for tuxedo you really should be able to
edit: I rewatched that part and she honestly looks better without makeup
He just wants to flatter her. If he doesn´t see any difference, when pausing, he must be blind.

yup
To be honest.... your way more beautiful without makeup. I'm not saying you aren't beautiful with it on of course. Just saying you have natural beauty. And more importantly all people are beautiful, its just those who like to be bullies or have their own image issues who tell others what beauty is or is not. But if you really want to best truth of all.... beauty is on the inside, not the outside. While we only know you from youtube and what not, your beauty is on the inside. You seem like a great person.
I think I’m
an exception to that rule, I even often find women wearing makeup less attractive and especially less intelligent, at least if it is very flashy makeup like the red lipstick you used. If it’s subtitle however it’s a whole different story, but having the talent to show of your most positive features, using a minimal amount of makeup in such a creative and skilful way that most people won’t even notice and also knowing about the relation between attractiveness and success is a sign of higher intelligence in and of itself I would say.
Maybe it’s me thinking about how long it takes to do that all the tome and how
little time must be left to learn and use your brain so it won’t “decay”
Congratulations for putting all 100 layers on.
I didn't notice that u wore make up ..u r naturally beautiful !
2:18 I wonder how a trustworthy face features would vary with different cultures.
Yes! Research has been done with people across racial backgrounds, but mostly in the western world. It's definitely a key area for further research.
I've never been so unsettled by lipstick XD
I don't know a lot on makeup, but seeing your lips barely touching deserves a like.
I feel like more of your personality showed through in this video which was nice! :)
Only clicked on this cause I thought her lipstick looked weird in the thumbnail lol 💅🏽
I'm not into "fake." To me, makeup along with other fake ..uh.. things detracts from beauty, rather than enhances it. You're beautiful au naturel.
Loved the information, but the layers challenge was SO much funnier live! How did you keep from getting it on your teeth in the video?
I never would have noticed you weren't wearing makeup. You're a beautiful person. ❤️
Pareto's Principle: 80% of the video is occupied by 20% of the layers.
My goodness that lipstick made me think you were going to turn into the joker.
The more makeup a person wears the less I trust them, I always think they are trying to deceive, have something to hide or lack the confidence to be their true selves.
Also makeup covers up freckles which give a face so much character.
By the end of this video: Flashpoint Joker
there is a planet that answers that question as yes, it has a gravitational pull so immense that the water on it boil of immense pressure and self ignites but the gravity is so strong that it has the h2o compressed as ice, its like a ice ball on fire that will never melt or evaporate in any way i might be wrong about the self ignition but it is viable cause high pressures result in high heat and heat result in flames. also sorry for this i know this wasnt the point of the video but no one seemed to answer the question and i knew it sort of and it was bugging me not tot comment
That's 6 years well spent hahahahahahah
Anyone familiar with the Veritasium video about thought? He explains the 2 different types of thinking with Drew and Gun, and actually comes to the same conclusion. Drew is lazy and says the first thing what comes to mind, and Gun comes into action when more work is required
Hmm. Well I suppose water could boil and freeze at the same time if it was at both a very low temperature and under very low pressure. But would have to find a few sources to verify that supposition.
Triple Point for water:
Exactly 273.16 K (0.01 °C; 32.02 °F) and a partial vapor pressure of 611.657 pascals (6.11657 mbar; 0.00603659 atm)
I'm a stupid male, I'll warrant.
Jokes on you, i dont even look at the video 90% of the time
I'm so used to learning from you that it took me a second to realize that water boiling and freezing at the same time made no sense.
That's technically correct. Two distinct bodies of water can, under the same circumstances, turn into ice and vapor, because of that triple point, but each to a different state. Those two, separate events would be happening at the same time, under the same circumstances, and thus can be said that water froze and boiled at the same time.
However, the way I understood the original statement, the same body of water has to transition into a superposition state of both frozen and evaporated water, which AFAIK is impossible for atoms and molecules to do.
i got an ad for braincraft on this braincraft video
"VrainSauce! Vanessa here."
never could understand why anyone would need makeup. I mean you're intelligent and of course knowledgeable. break the circle, Nessy, focus on science.
Joker looks more scary than any other villains...
You sure you didn't ate some of that thing accidentally 😅😅
didn't even noticed the makeup till you mentioned it lol.
Did any of the studies include men who wear make-up or was it limited to women?
I could barely tell the difference between the left and right side at the start.
I find the whole concept of make up totally bizarre.
Huh, I was thinking about freezing liquids in a vacuum chamber for boiling and freezing at the same time, but apparently everyone else went straight to triple point. I think it would make sense to have answered the question in the video.
"down in the doodly-do" :D
Honestly I when I saw the thumbnail, I was like "why is she wearing makeup?", so whatever you normally do, it's definitely not that noticeable 😄😄
