    Very simple and smart idea. No moving parts either. Tractor supply has some thick mats that might work good too. Not sure they are as flexible. Your idea looks really good.

    Found an easy way to fix the arm from turning, put a piece of metal angle iron on the front of it to sandwich the mat to the square tubing. The angle goes on top of the hitch hole and the square tubing below it. Drill a hole through both for the bolt and you are good to go! Did it on mine today and works great. Thanks for the idea!

      good idea. also a screw on both ends of the square tubing at the back edge of the piece on the mower would prevent it from turning and no hole would need to be drilled in the mower just like your idea. I will have to try this soon.

    Love it, the only thing I would change and don't know if anyone said it yet is the nut and bolt through the 2x4 through the hitch I would just use a trailer bolt with cotter pin for quick attaching and detaching.

    if you extend the mat to the length covering the width of both tires, the effect might look more even. :)

    • @AmbrosLandscapingInc
      @AmbrosLandscapingInc  8 років тому +11

      Thanks the comment! It wouldn't do to much since the weight of the tires is greater then the weight of the mat.

    • @sacredp6012
      @sacredp6012 8 років тому

      Ambro's Landscaping Inc. Oh Ic, I thought the extra 2 stripes due to the tires might be taken care if the mat was extended. Thanks for your explanation.

    • @kennyplay5982
      @kennyplay5982 6 років тому +3

      if you look at the stripe, where the tires are, the stripes are even more "white" than the center, that means the grass has been pushed down even more than the center. Reflecting more light. So a longer mat would not help because the mat is not near as heavy as the weight from the mower and tires

    Should the striping mat fit between the tires or be wider to include the rear tires? This one fits between but I'm wondering if there is an advantage to going wider.

    • @zachreece8410

      Then you’d have to worry about backing up and it ripping off. I’m about to do the same thing but I’m going to use a piece of angle, and the self tapping screws. Screw it into the bumper and cut a small hole for a bungee cord hook to lift up when it’s not needed.

    • @ethan043
      @ethan043 2 роки тому

      No advantage. The tires stripe the grass too. You don't need it to go the full width of the mower.

      Brad Waddell it’s very simple. Use a piece of 1” square tubing and screw the mat to it. Then whatever you need to do in order to attach to your mower.

    Here is question, why not built it at least almost too the width off your wheel base? That way you don't have too show any wheel track on the lawn. I too like the rubber matt that would void breaking sprinkler heads.

    • @stephenlincolnjr1170
      @stephenlincolnjr1170 8 років тому +17

      Using a wider mat would not make a difference unless the mat were heavier than the mower. The wheels carry more weight which in turn presses the grass down harder and you would still have the tire marks.

  • @Thedeaconoftrade
    @Thedeaconoftrade 9 років тому

    that seems like its alot more effective and waaaay simpler than scags roller stripers, I could build that for like 20 bucks to free with just stuff around the house. Good idea using a doormat. I mayhave to make one of these now!

    I think you'd be better off using chains. Just cut series of chain long enough to just lay on the ground. Mount them to a mounting bar and mount to the back of the mower. They'll drag a lot easier and won't give any issues when turning.

    3 shades of green . interesting. 3 different size strips . it works. i’m to lazy to add a stripping attachment. i do the poor man’s method. i mow one direction at 4” then when i have to go the other way i drop down to 2”. from any angle the syria can be seen cause the grass sizes at 2” difference more than enough for the sun to reflect and see the strips.
    the sun the syria???

      This is what I am trying to figure out myself. I have a lot of customers properties that only have one small section that is nice. For the most part this section is their front yard. So I am looking for something I can use and then quickly remove and come back for later. The other striping kits do not look like they are easy to remove whatsoever. I would not want to take them on some of the steep hills I cut either.

    • @asthecrowflies1201

      It really depends on how well you diy it. Grass height, grass type, and deck rake also play a big role in striping. What he has in the video looks pretty much just as good as a real stripe kit, only question is how long it'll last or webter he got the weight and stiffness right where he doesn't tear up the yard when he reverses and makes turns, and it seems like he already addressed those issues.

  • @Silver87sc
    @Silver87sc 8 років тому

    why. ..is this important? I'm just trying to figure this out. the mower will make stripes on its own, no? please explain : D I'm guessing it's purely cosmetic

    • @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power
      @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power 8 років тому +1

      it's supposed to make a more pronounced stripe. yes, most mowers will lay some kind of stripe unassisted ( also, the higher the cut, and the more times the mower follows the same pattern, the more visible the stripe ), but these kits just serve to make a more crisp end result.
