Cynic, Meshuggah and BTBAM are my favorites. When it comes to Pain of Salvation my 1st album I listened to by them was “Remedy Lane” and it’s still one of my favorite Prog albums of all time. So that’s my pick.

@@Darkko88 I feel like some people only say this because each and every single album sounds like a completely different band which, imo, gives them bonus points. They're a progressive band that actually progresses lol
Echoing others here, but my experience is that people mostly think The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane are the two best PoS albums, and I agree with that assessment. They're one of those bands whose sound changes a whole lot from album to album, though. Scarsick, for instance, is largely some form of nu metal. I'd also recommend the one before Panther, called In the Passing Light of Day. Very emotional band and a bit over the top at times, but they have put out some fantastic stuff. Also, check out the song "Sisters" from the Road Salt albums. Not a well-received pair of albums, but that song is a very bright spot.
Definitely The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane. I also happen to enjoy Be quite a bit. As for songs I agree with you on Sisters, I've listened to it and the next one (Of Dust) on their own many times. Also Kingdom of Loss.
I think part of Tool’s appeal is just how alien they feel to everything. Despite being an accessible band, they’re very far removed from their influences and contemporaries; you literally can’t get anything that sounds close.
Big Pain of Salvation fan here, I would rank them in the A tear. I do like Panther, but it's not one of their better albums. Start with A Perfect Element, Part 1. If you liked it, listen to their debut album, Entropia, and go in chronological order from there.
Pain of Salvation are an interesting band because while they have a _sound_ that is unique to them, they don't really have a _style_ (they have dabbled all over the musical landscape). So their albums can be really hit and miss. I liked _Panther_ but I can see why a lot of people didn't. But it's actually fairly atypical for them (which is why a lot of fans of their from their first 4 albums really didn't like it). And honestly, if that was the only thing I'd ever heard from them - if I didn't have the context of their career - I think I probably wouldn't be a fan. So I think there are two options for where to start - an old album which is by far the fan favourite called _Remedy Lane_ and a newer album which a lot of die-hard fans of theirs (including me) just LOVED called _In the Passing Light of Day._ They're sort of two sides of the same coin as they are both really mature concept albums with lyrics based on events in Daniel Gildenlöw's actual life (all of their albums are conceptual, but these are the only two that are incredibly personal), but the amount of life experience that Gildenlöw (their main singer, songwriter, lyricist and guitarist) had when he created each is vastly different, and so the perspective taken and the musical choices that were made, are quite different too. If it was me, I'd start with _Remedy Lane._ It's a classic for a reason, and probably the best album for a Dream Theater fan (especially a fan of _Scenes from a Memory_ ) to start with.
As long as Opeth is S all is good. I'd also put Periphery, Gojira and Leprous into S. Periphery is incredible once they click. Hail Stan is a masterpiece. Also Vektor into S, even though they're primarily considered a thrash band.
Musicianship on vektor is crazy I just vent get into the vocals. I need to listen to more Periphery I heard a song or two and I enjoyed them. Gojira rocks.
@@soakedbearrd The vocals on Vektor are an acquired taste for sure. Their latest song, Activate, has pretty normal thrash vocals instead of the high-pitched ones. Maybe try that.

Vanden Plas always gets overlooked. Same five guys since 1986, and quality albums since album 1 (their debut album came out in 1994). For those not knowing what Vanden Plas sounds like, kinda Symphony X-meets-Threshold. Not quite as heavy and shreddy as Symphony X, heavier and a bit shreddier than Threshold.

Questy you NEED to check out Pain of Salvation, particularly the early stuff. I've been watching your channel for a long time and feel like I know your tastes and that shit is right up your alley. Kind of shocked you haven't heard them before.
Pain of Salvation! 💖 Check out "Remedy Lane" & "In the passing light of day"! 🙌 After listening to Dream Theater's Octavarium (song) I can only put em on S.
Seem popular to shit on Periphery and nobody wants to give them a fair chance in general. I love everything I have heard, and think the vocals are underrated. Need to dig into more recent albums.
Agree with a lot of the comments here. I learned about Pain of Salvation when listening to bands similar to Porcupine Tree (which I’m surprised didn’t make the list even though they are sort of prog). I think the best album to start listening to for Pain of Salvation has to be 12:5 because it includes a variety of their releases songs (it’s a live unplugged album) and the intro as well as the rest of the album blew me away. Remedy Lane is also another fantastic choice (probably the best for Studio Albums) There are very few bands that make Acoustic Prog sound incredibly good and Pain of Salvation is definitely one of them. And DT should have been in S tier. It’s synonymous with Prog.
Pain of Salvation has a lot of great albums. IMO their best (in order) are… 1. Entropia 2. One Hour By the Concrete Lake 3. Remedy Lane 4. In the Passing Light of Day 5. The Perfect Element Part I
Gives me a great idea for videos on my channel! Good list - Opeth and Tool, totally. Haken and Riverside are in "A". No Devin Townsend? What's wrong with this list!
For Pain of Salvation I really think their peak was their first four albums, culminating in 2002's Remedy Lane. I definitely think you should check out that album. Keep in mind that they are all concept albums too. After Remedy Lane I thought BE was an interesting experiment (live DVD is pretty cool too), but after that I think they went downhill for a while. 2017's In The Passing Light of day was somewhat of a return to form, but it still doesn't compare to their first 4 albums IMO, and Panther was another step backwayrds (despite some cool rhythmic ideas and fantastic drumming).
Opeth and Pain of Salvation are my two favorite bands. Many good POS albums, Remedy lane for instance. 10/10. Like Opeth, POS also have a lot of different sounding albums.
Wilderun is next level prog from Massachusetts. The last three albums are absolutely fantastic. If you like older, death rooted prog from Opeth, check them out.
Interesting ranking. Dream Theater is easily my favorite prog metal band. Definitely A tier for them. You're probably right about Queensryche. For me I think it depends on the era of the band; albums from 1983 to 1994 would go to B, and everything afterwards would probably be at D. Fates Warning is one of the pioneers of prog metal. They're probably B tier for me. I do think they had a better discography overall than Queensryche. When it comes to Haken and Leprous, I can respect them but they're not for me. I do like a handful of songs by both though.
Another great prog metal album is The First Chapter by Circus Maximus. Amazing vocals. Also Beyond Twilight and Zierler. In the prog rock genre, check out The Dear Hunter. Check out the first three songs in their album Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise. They have concept albums with a single overarching story that’s currently at album 5
I agree with the ranking of the first two bands, and as for the others, I'd have a really hard time calling any of them innovative or "progressive". You could even argue that Tool is heavily influenced by 80s King Crimson. But they definitely have their own sound and approach that's unique to them.
Absolutely stellar listing here. Mostly where I'd put them, although part of me wants to put DT in S-tier just for the impact and significance they had in bringing prog metal mainstream and the caliber of musicianship they possess, and also I think BtBaM *definitely* needs to be bumped up to S-tier. Everything they do is basically elite level in my eyes, and as far as bands that began on or after the year 2000, they are pretty much the top of the heap and certainly a notch above Mastodon. All in all though, it all comes down to opinion, and you've pretty much nailed the overall sentiment I feel about these bands. Great job! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
You definitely need to dig into Pain Of Salvation catalogue. I think they made some of the more interesting albums in the genere. The Perfect Element pt.I and Remedy Lane are two masterpieces and if you are new to them, I'd start from there...great musicianship, wonderful compositions, stellar vocals.
I'll put: S: Pain of Salvation A: Riverside The rest is fine. You really should do reaction videos for Pain of Salvation's The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane. It would be wonderful to see your reaction to songs like Used, Reconcilliation, The Perfect Element, Fandango, Rope Ends, A Trace of Blood, Beyond the Pale etc. But don't limit yourself to just these two albums. Iter Impus from Be album, Enter Rain from Scarsick, Gone from Linoleum EP, The Physics of Gridlock from Road Salt Two, the entire In The Passing Light of Day ( yes, i can't help it to recommend the whole songs). My suggestion is keep open minded and be patience. Because most of Pain of Salvation's songs are not love at first listen. But once you get it, it's really rewarding ❤️
@@Capitaomac1 well, some songs will give false impression of Pain of Salvation. For example: spitfall, panther, sleeping under the stars, and imago. What i can see is, he's in a quest of metal/progmetal. So give him any songs closed to his expectation 😁

Don't know if I'd call Tool prog. Imo it's Descending or The Pot. It took a long time for me to get into Tool but since I realized how amazing they use Bass and Drums to create unique rhythms, I'm kinda obsessed by them. Danny Carey carries. 😅
Yep that's the first band to came to mind. Though they've been around for decades and have consistently put out great albums despite having 3 different singers, they rarely get mentioned.
Man they are so criminally underrated, it almost hurts! I bet Questy would love them! Not one mediocre album in their catalogue. Always nice to see when they get mentioned in the comments👏🏻
I discovered some good bands trough this list. On the other hand, I was expecting more comment about the music style of each band and not just how much you like them.
Hey man, I feel Rishloo should be at the list also - if you didn't check them, please do! They're at my top five, along with Tool, Opeth, Haken, and Leprous...
Good list. I don’t know all the bands on the list but for me it’s Opeth, Mastodon, Tool . Only thing I disagree with you is their new album which I didn’t like, so tool got taken down a notch.
KING CROW are incredible! They are so talented and they have been becoming more heavy prog. Metal over the years. If anyone doesn't know of them? Then you all are missing out on a great group. It's really hard to beat the great OPETH in my opinion.🤘
100 % agree that Tool and Opeth are the only two S tier bands. As great as the other bands are, non of them come close to how great these two bands are in terms of musicianship, song writing and impact in the genre.
Pain of Salvation? I can’t recommend one album only. They’re all so different. Try The Perfect Element Pt1, Remedy Pane of BE. If you like neither, you don’t like them at all. If you enjoy them, try their debut afterwards Entropia, then Scarsick and In the Passing Light of Day. Road Salt 1 and 2 are more rock than metal, but you could give those a try too.
Interesting ranking, I tend to agree to much of the list, Opeth I definitely see their rank the same as you do. For me Haken should be S - tier, or at least on left side of DT. They are top top musicians, and the music for me is like DT next level.
Opeth is a S+++++++++++. For me Tool is a B and thx. Meshuggah is prog metal? I always thinked they are technical death metal or math metal, called djent on this days. Good video.
Check out Vola. They are fucking superb. Soooooo goddamn goooooooooood. (Start with Inmazes, then Applause of a Distant Crowd, then Witness.). So many good songs: Stray the Skies Starburn Owls We Are Thin Air Ghosts Smartfriend Alien Shivers Whaler Straight Lines 24 Light Years Napalm Future Bird Thank me later.
Interesting tier list. Switch the A B bands and move Opeth down to b and we're good. I love bands that are masters at creating a cinematic soundscape. Fuckit Leprous and Neobliviscaris in S with Tool. I will go to an album of those bands before any on this list. Exuul 10/10 album. (Also I'm one of those Fear Inoculum down players) I personally like the effort Maynard put into Eat the Elephant a few years before alot more. Still Aenema, 10 00 days, Undertow what timeless albums
Every UA-camr makes videos to put their favorite band/or albums at the top of every list they make. Opeth is great but I like My Arms and Morningrise the best.. The best Pain of Salvation album is One Hour by the Concrete Lake by a long shot, then Remedy Lane or Entropia, the rest aren't that good. Fates Warning and Between the Buried and Me should both be S tier.
Instrumental prog is the best side if prog, yes I'm biased as fuck! Lol. I get it if you dont like it, very much musicians type of music. I've always loved shredding as a kid, so bands with just non stop shredding blew me away when I first discovered. 😁
Made a goof saying the bass work is good in animals as leaders when they don’t even have one 😂 Classic Questy
guess that means there is nothing good about animals as leaders then

Don't know if I'd call Tool prog. Imo it's Descending or The Pot.
It took a long time for me to get into Tool but since I realized how amazing they use Bass and Drums to create unique rhythms, I'm kinda obsessed by them. Danny Carey carries. 😅
Where's the band Threshold for you on the list? Great band!
Ya threshold is good 👍
Yep that's the first band to came to mind.
1. Gojira 2. Meshuggah 3. Enslaved 4. Opeth 5. Obscura
To get Pain of Salvation i recommend the remedy lane album
I discovered some good bands trough this list. On the other hand, I was expecting more comment about the music style of each band and not just how much you like them.
You should check out Remedy Lane and Perfect Element albums of Pain of Salvation. Cult albums of prog metal.
My favorite Pain of Salvation album is ‘One Hour By the Concrete Lake’ brilliant concept album
Absolute best Pain of Salvation albums are Remedy Lane and The Perfect Element
Avoid Scarsick
Just listen to these 2 first, then the earlier albums.
Entropia, One Hour... and Be are also as awesome. But i also do prefer the two you mentioned.
love that you pointed out the bass work for Animals As Leaders when they actually don’t have a bassist
Amazing haha I don’t know what or who they have I’ve only heard the albums which sounds djenty and bassy 😂 classic questy
Opeth, Haken and Animals as Leaders are the holy trinity of the genre for me, Meshuggah and Morglbl would fill out the Top 5
Ignored the rest of the bands, at at peace because Tool was at S where it belonged.
No DTP though? anyhow, I agree with most of your ranking
this chav's gone bloody mental. pop over to The States and queue up some proper prog like Arch Echo. Cheers mate🫖
Interesting ranking, I tend to agree to much of the list, Opeth I definitely see their rank the same as you do. For me Haken should be S - tier, or at least on left side of DT. They are top top musicians, and the music for me is like DT next level.
Opeth is my favorite band. Gojira live on the other hand is levels above anyone I’ve seen. Even tool with all their jaw dropping visuals
Can't agree with any tier list for those bands, all of them are exceptional S+...maybe my favorite genre of metal.
I feel with all the death metal here they should have included Rivers of Nihil on this list
Periphery its one of my favorites bands ever, the debut album is just a W, all the songs are so good
I prolly would've put mastodon in A but I agree with tool 100 percent
Tool no question is S Tier. They makes 10 minute songs feel like 4 minutes
For me is the opposite way.
I can’t fucking pass the 30 seconds mark.everything about them feel like a chore
I absolutely love Tool, but I don't know if I'd really consider tool Metal tbh. Opeth are the Goats in my opinion
Opeth is a S+++++++++++. For me Tool is a B and thx. Meshuggah is prog metal? I always thinked they are technical death metal or math metal, called djent on this days. Good video.
Opeth, Meshuggah and TOOL belong up top in my humble opinion 🤘
10:29 me explaining my love for metal to my friends
Check out Vola. They are fucking superb. Soooooo goddamn goooooooooood.
(Start with Inmazes, then Applause of a Distant Crowd, then Witness.). So many good songs:
Stray the Skies
Starburn
Owls
We Are Thin Air
Ghosts
Smartfriend
Alien Shivers
Whaler
Straight Lines
24 Light Years
Napalm
Future Bird
Thank me later.
Pain of salvation: the perfect element, remedy lane. Early ones good too but start with above.
Fates Warning, Queensryche, Dream Theater are my Favourite prog bands.
Totally agree with that list. Opeth and Tool are the only ones that deserve S.
I would put Symphony X above DT though.
remedy lane and the perfect element by pain of salvation are two of the best prog metal albums ever
I'd put Mastodon S tier, because of Crack the Skye
I would argue entropia is pain of salvations best work. However, most of their early stuff is arguably nearly as good.
Entropia is my fav as well (by a hair over One Hour By the Concrete Lake).
My list is pretty much the same, just DT in S, Haken in A and Periphery in B
Opeth and TOOL as S tier? 🤤🤘🏻
My S Tier is Btbam, Opeth and Periphery
Instrumental prog is the best side if prog, yes I'm biased as fuck! Lol. I get it if you dont like it, very much musicians type of music. I've always loved shredding as a kid, so bands with just non stop shredding blew me away when I first discovered. 😁
you mean guitar wankery. worst kind of prog
@@gwynbleidd9000 if u think animals as leaders is just guitar wankery then I think that's a you problem mate
Where would u put porcupine tree if they were on this list ?
