Whisky .com reviews the Yamazaki Sherry Cask. This whisky was voted the best whisky 2015 in the Whisky Bible by Jim Murray. What does this mean? How does this whisky effect you and the whisky industry? Horst Luening will talk about these questions.
The nose:
Full, very fruity, vanilla and caramel with some oranges.
In the back some over-aromatic oak notes.
The taste:
Spiciness and Sweetness turns into heavy bitterness
The finish:
Long with oakiness and bitterness

whisky ratings in the media are a joke....and thus the reason UA-cam and people like yourself Horst are so important
I like how he casually drops shade on this Murray guy for like the first seven minutes.
Excellent discussion about "best in the world" issues!
I had a bottle of this that I bought from The Whisky Exchange.for a little over $100. But I sold it last year when someone offered me $1,400 for it. Prices for Japanese single malts have reached absurd levels, and the cost far outpaces the quality of the whisky that is in the bottle by a couple orders of magnitude.
2013 bottle that is completely out of stock and as it was a production of very few bottles, the cost of resale today is pornographically demented 2019: u$s 4,280 minimum !!!!
Bottle is anywhere between 8-10 grand now. 2021. 😬
Well it averages at around 9k now
😂🤣🤡
Horst & Ralfy are by far the best whisky reviewers. I come here, first before I buy, and then after I try. A great way to help learn your way around tastings.
Good refreshingly honest discussion, thanks.
You are welcome
This is one of my favourite Horst reviews. Horst always says what he believes. Good review of the whisky too and a necessary one as it's now impossible to find for under £2000
Could never fault your modest words of wisdom. And that's why you're our version of Jim Murray, Horst.
Slainte~
I didn’t know Werner Herzog was so into whisky!
Underrated comment 👍
@@jaredcook4577 Or a kink of Gorbachev spotless. But what an eloquence!
The Best Whisky in the World my ass. The fact that one man's opinion matters so much is ridiculous. I guess Scotland didn't give Jim enough money this time around. Glad we have the same opinion on this opinion. Nice video like always.
Thank you.
Also a fun fact: Several other whiskies scored the same value as the Yamazaki Sherry.
Watching this video 9 years later and this is a $10,000 bottle through and through. Maybe I'll never get to try it. I'll just have to enjoy it through Horst Leuning's wonderful tasting videos!
It's always a great pleasure to watch a total professional do his stuff.
Very fair comment on the meaning of Best Whisky. Very interested to learn about your best list, you talked to fast and it would be useful you could provide a link to your previous comment clips.
Hi Hörst ! The bitterness of the Yamazaki disappear with time. Few weeks, after open the bottle, it becames more rounded and really delicious. One of the best whisky i've ever taste. I think this whisky needs oxygenation. Re-tastes this in few weeks ;-)
Im gonna stop watching your videos or ill end up drunk everyday.
Hood Gentleman so true
This guy is a gem and the yamazaki 18 is phenomenal haven’t had this one yet
I am fairly new to whisky and I must say, I really enjoy your videos and the ethical and honest side of your approach, very informative!
I love the yamazaki 18... One of the best nose in a whisky i ever tasted... (Typical japanese perfume kind of nose)
Thank you for the video's in english!
Here in 2020 and this whisky is now thousands. :-( wish I got to try it when it was affordable...
So after many years of lusting over the experience of tasting Yamazaki Sherry cask I finally landed a bottle, I haven't opened it yet, my son is getting married next month, a very special occasion on many levels.
Interesting review while sipping a Benromach 10 YO, thank you! I did not know that you did English reviews until last week. I enjoyed this one and the insight about Jim Murray.
A fine explanation of why a whisky doesn't live up to marketing expectations . 👍🇬🇧
What a speech...
Just wonderful review
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just looked this up, the first offer came up for 4600 dollars on sale... Holy Moly
I can’t believe as just getting into Whiskey, I brought this for I think under £150. Vague memory. Now I search for it, it’s worth £2000+! This was my 2nd sherry tasting whiskey after a highland part 18 that was left for another extra year (19) picked up from a whiskey festival in the Netherlands.
Anyway, live your comments on Jim Murray, white untrustworthy, rather my bible is still Micheal Jackson (rip) 5th edition! Just joined your channel and much into Whiskey again being Covid bound!
Jim Murray will follow the money. On the back of this video (some time ago) I bought the Glendronach 18 yr Tawny Port finish, and it is close to perfect. The only whisky I had I I thought was better was the Bushmills 21yr old (which has been through bourbon, sherry and Madeira casks.
I havent seen a $5000 dollar bottle of yamazaki opened...until Now.
I've bottles of 12 yr old in the cupboard, some $150 and a few at $500/$750/$1500. Fruity, Caramel, spicy, chocolate... very strong peaty flavour...
So your Yamazaki 2013 must be 18yrs to 21yrs.
You LOVED this one didnt you Horst....Yes indeed at 13:12 it was there for all to see. I'm saving up for a bottle now.
Excellent, Master Luening work in an ethic perspective, can we say that to other "expert".
My liquor man showed me this single malt. Your review convinced me to give this one a try.......thanx.........
a bottle now is worth about a 1K pounds! they must be rare? thanks for the videos
Awesome points made here.. I hope to review this one in the near future..Keep up the great work..
Thank you
very informal, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
very good review. I hope you can do some of the german language review into english. thanks
You sir are a master indeed.
16:02 I literally laughed out loud
Funny enough we went to japan and bought at the airport the Yamasaki. I am not a whiskey expert, but back home we try it and i told my wife that the best whisky I ever drink. It was in 2014 and and later I learn that the exact bottle of Yamazaki was the whiskey of the year.
Can someone tell me what whisky is he saying at 4:10 ?
The reason why the yamazaki is expensive I think its how scarce it is. Although The quality of the yamazaki is certainly up there....talk about the best whisky is purely subjective.
This is currently on sale on Amazon for SIX THOUSAND POUNDS?!!!
The best Whisk(e)y in the world is the one you're about to drink, doesn't matter the maker, just the taker.
Great review Horst. I totally agree, I would take Glendronach and Balvenie any day over these overpriced Yamazaki malts.
Yes, It's just bonkers whats happening on EBay or some retailers.
Could you pls provide english subtile sir, your video will be perfect!
Mint sauce with PORK? Not in my kitchen :P apple sauce goes with pork. Mint goes with beef or chicken (in my own humble opinion lol)
Still the best review of this whisky
Thanks
'The Remembrance of Glue'? Heavy Duty Clagg or Perkin's Paste?
Evo stick 😂🤣
Bravo to the independent perspective! Unfortunately the sarcasm of putting a bit of a Japanese accent on in the beginning and while mentioning Japanese caligraphy brings a bit of a tacky twist to the review.
I enjoyed laphroaig quarter cask, glen Scotia 15, kilkerran 12, talisker 10, and JW 18, and they all cost much much much less.
I agree with you.
may I know where the mic is?
How would you say this compares or differs to Hibiki?
This is a single malt whisky, Hibiki is a blended whisky with malt and grain whisky mixed together.
This is luxury whisky
Top 5 no scottish whisky???? the macallan is not in Top 5???????
insanely expensive
i'm not throwing 3 grand shekels for one bottle
start 11.00mins
Yamazaki - for me, expensive disappointment - "katana tea".
Glue lol
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
i want nice whisky with Sherry teast .about 50$
+Yasser Al_bana (T) glenfarclas 105, glendronach 12 years, aberlour 12 years, benriach sherry cask 12 years.
These are all cheap whiskies with big sherry flavour.
4:15 🤤🤤🤤
I'm a sherry fiend.
This guy said glue? 🤣🤣 wth?
Why u do hand like that u are cound some coin
I stole this from a review I wrote previously on Cougar Bourbon, which Murray gave 95 points but it sums up the worth of his ratings:
That little tag hung around its neck proclaims "Jim Murray 95/100!". But it says more about Mr Murray's bizarre taste (or the lack of it) than it does about the whiskey.
So; Bookers, Bakers, Turkey 101, Makers, etc, etc, where do they rate in the last five points on his scale? Or are we expected to believe that something as spectacular as Bookers is not as good as this?
Of course we can't blame the Fosters Co for jumping on the bandwagon and lapping up all that free (I wonder if it is) publicity but nonetheless it does show how unreliable Murray's ratings are and I suggest if you own his book you take it to the smallest room in the house where in may be put to better use than reading.
As to the Bourbon; lovely complex nose not backed up by taste or mouth feel; it is a little thin with some youthful bite but not harsh. Pleasant, easy drinking without water at only 37% ABV and certainly a step up from J Beam but several steps down from the lovely Bourbons to be found in the $40-$60 price range.
A light, young, easy drinking Bourbon with a good nose, average, less than polished taste and short finish that is good for its price but not at all deserving the tag around its neck.
It is not at all special but certainly worth the money. Unlike Mr Murray's book.
William Crampton I have to say we don't have this Cougar Bourbon over here in Germany. Is this a big thing in America.
Whisky.com It is made in Lawrenceburg, Illinois and bottled in Australia at only 37%ABV for the Australian and NZ markets. It is a basic, easy drinking, unchallenging bourbon. Cheap and cheerful but still more interesting than standard Beam or JD. You aren't missing anything Horst but I'm happy to send you a bottle if you like☺?
I made the comment to illustrate the unreliability of Murray's ratings. 95?Really? Perhaps if he mastered the watering of his whisky (rather than telling us to do so is evil) he would actually be able to taste it? Perhaps that's why 37% Cougar tastes so good to Mr M? Here is how he has described it previously:
One of the most characterful, purposeful bourbons you could imagine. This Illinois cracker is one of the best kept secrets in the bourbon world. 37% Alc/Vol. Rating: 93 points - Jim Murray’s Whiskey Bible 2006
This Yamazaki Sherry Cask whisky is no longer made
The way you drink whisky disgusts me :D truly!
£6000!!!!!
sound like a jealous scot.lol
I totally agree. There is no tradition in non Scottish whisky. No worth The money entirely.
Absolutely no no no for Japanese whisky. I will never waste my time and money on anything not from Scotland.
I think all whisky and cognac review are all Self-Hypnotism! Lol
Why didn't you mention other sherry cask whiskies. Your've tried the Mcallan Ruby....poor comparative analysis to compare it to just the Yamazaki 18 which is not a pure 'sherry cask' whiskey. Next time think a little more carefully when you make a comparison.
Unfortunately....You are openly....biased.. towards... European... whiskeys.....Shows.. racism...not expected... from a guy like you ...Shame...!
zzzzz. yes Jim Murray's opinion is Jim Murray's opinion. Subjective. Wow. Just because he says something is the best doesn't make that true for anyone but himself. Get over yourself?
I slept in the first 1second.soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring
