    I wonder if they are saving some of the 50 yo casks in reserve for a 100 yo bottling in 2065. The grandkids would be most appreciative! Great review, Horst!

    • @CeRockTV
      @CeRockTV 8 років тому +5

      The abv would drop below 40% abv, so by current regulations they wouldnt be able to sell it as a whisky anymore.

    • @southport65
      @southport65 5 років тому

      @@CeRockTV What controls ABV? Sometimes I'll see 30+ year old cask strength bottles with 70's or 80's distillate that's over 50%, which seems quite high for that age, while other cask strengths come in at low-mid-40%. Is it random how fast the ABV drops or is there some science behind it?

    • @eurly93
      @eurly93 3 роки тому +2

      @@southport65 its both. Science part: alcohol evaporates faster than water in cool climates like scotland. Therefore the proof will always be decreasing. Also, as horst mentioned, casks get leaky over time as they dry out due to the liquid level dropping. Random part: every cask is different. Different area of the warehouse means different temperature, different air movement around the cask, different oak staves, different quality of construction in terms of watertightness, and the list goes on and on. Moreover, when casks get this old, sometimes they will be combined together to continue aging so that the level doesn't get too low and completely evaporate. So rule of thumb is 1-2% a year but that could easily be only 0.25% the first year when the barrel if full and 5% in year 50 when its almost empty.

    “Second verse, same as the first” - lyric from 1964-5 hit song by British Band Herman’s Hermits; song - “I’m Henry the Eighth”. Peter Noone, singer, tosses this out seemingly ad lib between first & second verse. Great reference, Horst.

    • @rafyhay5916

      That's interesting - I knew it from the Ramones' "Jackie is a Punk" - they must have been quoting Herman's Hermits

    This was a great review. I appreciate that I'll likely never get to taste a 50 year old Glenfarclas, and I am really curious about the older highly appreciated Scotch, so this lets me understand what it would be like.

      And Glenfarcles is certainly one of the cheapest brands of very old Whiskys. A 50 year old Glenfarclas costs €3,000 but a 50 year old Glenfiddich costs 4 to 5 times as much.

      I wouldnt recommend it for this price (100 dollars, really?). The 17 year old is only about 60 € in germany. The 12 year old is really a entry level bottling. Some say, Glenfarclas starts with the 15 year old (about 50€ here).

      Also, bigger casks give less taste. It is all about how much of the total volume is touching the cask. Increasing the cask size, increases the area increases linearly, whilst the volume is increasing exponentially. So there would be less cm^2 of "touching" per liter
