"Duke of Earl" is a 1962 US number-one song, originally recorded by Gene Chandler. It is the best known of Chandler's songs, and he subsequently dubbed himself "The Duke of Earl". The song was penned by Chandler, Bernice Williams, and Earl Edwards. This song was a 2002 inductee into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[3] It has also been selected by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
This fantastic song is 60 yrs old I still love it as much as I did back then. One of the greatest songs ever recorded!!! He had a great comeback song in 1970 It's a Groovy Situation.
Ooo I'll have to check it out
Holy 1962 Old School Batman! Gene Chandler rode this 2.5-minute last-of-the-doo-wop-era smash all the way to #1. "We'll walk through my dukedom, and a paradise we will share." Great pick & FIRE reaction to this Grammy Hall of Fame classic!
Ah, so by 63 - doo wop was out?
@@EmpressReacts Yes, pretty much; however, there's no generally accepted date marking the demise of the doo-wop era. It began in the early '50s, some say by '63/'64 it was toast, but it can be argued that The Casino's rendition of "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" from 1967 (#6 Billboard Hot 100) with its beautiful Hammond organ solo was heavily influenced by doo-wop vocalization (see ua-cam.com/video/PT9Xs42n4kg/v-deo.html ). :)
@@craigcraigster4999 interesting ‼️
There was a thing in the early 60s that were like answer songs. Like Damita Jo had a song called "I'll Save the Last Dance for You" in answer to the Drifter's hit song "Save the Last Dance for Me." For this song, the girl group, The Pearlettes made an answer song called "The Duchess of Earl"
😂cool. I gotta check it out
I'm listening to this 60 years, loved it then still do. Definitely one of the greatest songs ever. He had a very good song in 1970 Groovy Situation, different but very good.
I LOVE DUKE OF EARL!!! It always struck me as SO funny. DUKE of... EARL! It works on so many levels.
Top-10 1-hit wonder. #1 Doo-wop-era 1-hit wonder(?). For sure heard this while skating at a youth ice hockey camp, 1974, and in the 1973 movie, American Graffiti. You should check out the song list from the American Graffiti movie - has a few classics you likely already reacted to.
This was the music my Dad listened to while I was growing up, so I probably heard it in the womb.
Fire! That chorus slays. Dig how the tempo slows in the chorus as part of the wind up to the big payoff before the turnaround. Listen for it in the snare drum hits. Gene Chandler "Duke Of Earl" zoomed to the top of the charts in 1962. That was the year my mother graduated from high school. A few years back at a 70th birthday party for one of my aunts that was so big they rented a hall and hired a dj who tried to play the oldies but was out of his depth, I rescued him somewhat by suggesting he play this song. When he did it was really nice to see the faces on the old folks light up. The first time I heard the song was watching television after school as a child in the seventies when an advertisement for an oldies compilation record came on that featured a snippet of the song. It might have been a K-Tel record, but I don't remember. K-Tel records is a whole other story.
I learned 5 seconds of soooo many songs from K-tel record commercials lol
😂cool how u saved the DJ
I've always loved this song. I love your Husky

😂right@
12 years old in 1960 "Duke of Earl" This record is still in my Top 10 All Time. The Harmony and Background is the best ever recorded. Thank you Gene!!
🔥🔥
Girl u b having FUN! FUN!! FUN!!!
😂 I try
I liked this so much when I first heard it (about age 12) that I asked my parents to get me the 45. Which they did and I enjoyed it. Yeah, totally shocking how it changes from the very beginning.....definitely worthy of Top 100 All-Time.
💯💯💯
I just bought this on vinyl! I hope you and the baby are doing well! Ray
Thanks! We are Ray
I forgot how great this song is. Being born nearly 20 years after this came out, I remember my parents playing this as a kid, and I always had a soft spot for it!
🔥
Everyone knows "Duke of Earl". I know for sure the 'Lowriders' keep this song alive. It really seems like Gene and his backing vocalists barely even needed any musical instruments. I had to watch your video again because I was writing my comment, while listening to the music. In my peripheral vision, I noticed that you REALLY enjoyed the song. That's why I watched the video again, to see you having fun listening to Gene Chandler.
I have "Get Down" by Gene Chandler on my phone's playlist.
Thank you, Empress. Your joy is infectious, and I really began to feel better seeing you and the Husky having so much fun!
😂thanks‼️
#1 HIT FROM 1962...
Your doggie is so cute!
Thank u!
Like your reaction your gettin in to it.
thanks!
No comments about the great dog? He just wanted to dance with you. He liked it, too.
🤣yes she did
Looks like your a dancer. Nobody moved like that off that record so you give it a new spin. Original dancers from Chicago's South side steppers/boppers did a "Walk" (slow dance with a partner) off this song. Popular hit at sock hops hosted by DJ Herb Kent and later Richard Pegue and Joe Ferguson who kept Chicago's dance traditions. Dusty/stepper sets still play these type of records today in Chicago. DuKays were a doo wop group that sounded a little like the Flamingos (doo wop).
Idk for sure, but I think maybe the first time I heard this song was on the TV show Happy Days lol
It's funny because in British aristocracy, there are Dukes and there are Earls....so I guess this is kind of a mashup of the different titles?
Really clever and classic song.
😂😂interesting
You really need to react go Ruby and the Romantic: Our day will come
If you liked Duke of Earl like it looks like you did, maybe you'd like Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price! True story banger from 1959.
Nice to see the Prince of Puppyton! Princess?
