One of the best records ever!! Took real effort to do this. Background singers are incomparable. Big hit in 1961. I was 13 and will never forget Gene.

The shit is real! I love this! As great as the Egyptian pyramids........ SOUL. It will be recognized as a masterpiece. And will be forever remembered as one of the all time greatest recording within the 20th century of western music.

Gene was very popular during the 60s and early 70s. This was a great song song from tha era. Stage presence....he dressed in a top hat...tux..cape. Please react to Rainbow '65....an live performance. He re- released that song two more times....Rainbow '80 & Rainbow '88. Each time the song was a hit on the national chart. Since you have an ear for 'ol skool music, l think you'll like Rainbow '65🤓

A R&B classic from the early 60s. Went to #1 and heard all over the radio in my youth. By the way, the word "duke" is sung 117 times by my count.

      117?
Today it would be "Dude" of Earl.

This was original Doo Wop. Different but catchy, nothing technically elaborate just good singers and usually 3 or more backup singers with great harmonies. I enjoy seeing today's crowd hearing this style of music for the first time. Other similar tunes/groups would be "Blue Moon by The Marcels", 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens", Pretty Little Angel Eyes by Curtis Lee" to name a few. Thanks' for posting.

This artist singing this song appeared in the movie " Don't Knock The Twist " featuring Chubby Checker and a host of other artists. I reckon that I was around 13 years old when I saw the movie but Gene Chandler had already released the song maybe a year or so before. Anyway this song is and always will be a classic. I'm not sure whether it went to number one here in New Zealand but it certainly did around the world. One of my all time favourites.

Novelty song from Gene Chandler and the Dukays.. back up doo wop singers and jazz musicians from Chicago's South Side Englewood/Woodlawn neighborhoods. Song was written in part by Earl Williams, the Duke himself. Gene was mostly known as a soul singer who had many hits after this. This was one of the last of the doo wop style sounds popular in the 1950's. Big crossover hit across the nation and popular on street corners in Chicago and other urban areas. A song for the "Walkers" in the stepping/bopping (dancing) community in early sixties clubs especially sock hops hosted by DJ Herb Kent the "Cool Gent". Cool style for the processed hair, DOB hats and gousters look. I knew one of the musicians who played with members of the Dukays (who had a great Flamingos (doo wop) styled release) and Tyrone Davis.

This song has '1961' written all over it - why they never made this the national anthem is a crime!

If you love oldies, you should check out the group, The Platters! They will give you chills. My favorite songs of theirs is when Tony Williams was singing lead in the 1950s. My personal favorites are: "(You've Got) The Magic Touch", "The Great Pretender", "Only You (And You Alone)", and my absolute favorite of theirs, "Twilight Time". They sound like angels.

Believe it was out in 1962. Absolutely loved it then still do. I can hear this daily and never get tired of it. Had a real groovy song in 70 Groovy Situation different than this but very very good.

It's nice to hear songs that are just for fun. Songs about serious issues are good as well but I like a variety of music.

Your very soft spoken, and with oldies songs, try out Lorraine(not sure of actual name, but that is the woman they sing of) or Silhouettes on the shade
