This is what you see from a great studio... I'm glad warhorse not only acknowledges roxxy's videos but also appreciate them.... And thank so much for KCD
Last summer, me and my girlfriend had been on a trip through the Czech Republic and I had finished KCD, so, while going back to Prague from my grandparents house, we decided to get down from the highway and stop at all the iconic places. I experienced a wonderful feeling, while going through the different forests, and driving on the country roads (taking me home). I knew exactly where I was, what crossing was down the road just after the next hill, even though I never been to the place before, except for KCD.
What I really like is that Kingdom Come actually got me interested in the history of this region and without the video game I would have never learned any of this.
I'm glad you did but honestly, the whole Europe is precisely that. Anywhere you go there, you'll find a hamlet, a village, a city, a land, a region, a province, a small state or a big one which has a tremendous source of history to be learned then discovered on-site. This is what Europe is : a paradise for historian aficionados. And you get even luckier when the common heritage has survived to ages, wars or this stupid fashion from late XIXth, early XXth that made a lot of country "modernise" their buildings by demolishing them in order to build new ones because the old heritage was considered as old-fashioned and ungainly.
Legend has it, to this day, the guard of Rattay is still looking for Henry, because Henry was walking around at night without a torch! Don't you know only Bandits and Robbers walk about without a torch!?!
It's funny that other than the guards, YOU'RE the only person they stop and fine for it. No civilian NPC EVER carries a torch in Rattay at night...and nobody cares until you do it.
We really need more medieval games like Kingdom Come. It’s so sad that we can’t walk through history like this in beautiful detail. I hope someone out there puts in the effort to make another. Damn it all I’ll pay the creators of Kingdom Come if I have to for another game.
I know it's different but as Parisian, I did enjoy a lot Assassin's Creed Unity which takes place in Paris during the French revolutionary era. The streets and scales are not respected but the restitution of buildings is very accurate. There is not only KDC that provides that kind of experience. Some others games offer this possibility but it is true that there is NO full realistic (except the potions) medieval games as good as KDC.
I've been gaming since the early 90s and I am confident in saying this is the best game I have ever played. Videos like these make appreciate this even more.
Play witcher 3 but make sure you do the backstory on the the last 2 games, also it's not necessary to play the last two, you'll know why when you look up the storyline
@@kingkai2800 I've played witcher 3 and it is definitely up there with my all-time favorites but it is not nearly as immersive as kingdom come. I don't care too much about W3 combat and 3rd person only is a major gripe for me as well. While I loved that game KCD is much closer to the experience I'm looking for. Also big points for being an rpg that is not fantasy yet again.
@@torodensson1331 they are overpowered in movies and video games, atleast that's what I have heard. Even with cannons it was a difficult task to take a good fortress. Castles were mostly or partly made of wood, so taking a stone castle would be much more difficult than a wooden. Just look at later centuries when cannons existed, they still struggled to destroy stone walls. Even with massive cannon balls. 1300-1500s.
"It's an opportunity to learn about the past". Ain't that the truth. About a year ago, before I bought KCD, I knew very little of the history of my own country (Wales). KCD inspired me to learn more, especially around the same time period in which KCD is set. At that time, Owain Glyndwr was in full swing in his uprising against Henry IV. I've since learned that medieval Welsh history is absolutely fascinating stuff and I would love to see a KCD-type game based around something in that setting.
Fun Fact: The reason some of the areas from KDC seem bigger and more grand is due to them actually being bigger than they were in real life. In Shadiversity's video going through the historical accuracy of the buildings in KDC, he had made a comment about it, and Warhorse replied. They stated that they had to make all the buildings and certain areas a bit bigger than real life, as the NPC navmesh was otherwise going to be a problem (not enough room for NPC's to properly navigate without creating odd glitches and bugs). Edit: Paragraph spacing. (UA-cam must you always double-space?)
It's a shame in a way, a friend actually said to me he felt the world could have been bigger and more realistic, turns out they actually made that region a lot bigger than it was in reality (along with the buildings and gates in it)
@@TheGreatGodPan I'm not so sure the actual map-size itself is bigger than real life. Just the buildings, pathways, and areas with lots of NPC traffic. It would still be likely that they scaled down the actual world size in order to stay within fit technical limitations.
@Adam Gainer That may be correct, my friend commented the towns felt too close together, maybe that is the case. I'd rather have a smaller open world that is rich and fully immersive though rather than a vast, repetitive barren wasteland like Fallout
Thing is, the czech republic does not has enough money to keep all the historical buildings in good shape. There are just to many of them. They focus on the bigger, historical more important ones.
@@pizzartobby2226 well, it is not, we do not have money, but renovate some 1400s castles is so dificult. I’m really excited about visiting the Czech Republic in two months time... Flying halfway across the world to see these places doesn’t sound so mad when you realise that so many others are doing the same. The level of detail is amazing!
@@Erakelus lol. I've spoken to some Czech friends that say the same as you. But I think if you've grown up in a city, then it doesn't impress you. But I come from a country that was founded in 1901 (Australia). Our buildings are not old. Our cities are full of skyscrapers (tall buildings), but not full of the rich architectural history of Europe. Our forests (we call it 'the bush') are nothing like the forests in CZ. Just being in a different city will be refreshing and awe inspiring (Dude... you have a church decorated with real human skulls!). I do not look forward to the loud and obnoxious tourists, but I hope I will be seen as a respectful tourist when I visit. :) Jsem nadšeny!

And sassau church /monestary is the same because it was never actually finished like at all. All those people working hard in the game trying to finish it. Yeah no you won't sorry

One of the things u didnt understand was that Czechia is full of castles and we do not have money and time to keep em "touristic" ready. Hell some of them are even in private possesion of the ex nobility, so yes, it´s sad, that some of them are a bit more greeny, but this is how it is :)
@G G The area depicted in the game is fairly backwards and unimportant. There are castles in Czech Rep in every town and 2-3 historical buildings in pretty much every village, it's an immense expense. A lot of those castles were used for their original purpose (defence, military barracks) well until the late 18th century and a lot of them were deliberately ruined by whoever managed to conquer them. A castle in a village (a village, not a town) I've been born and raised was destroyed by enemies during Napoleonic wars and then again shortly afterwards. Another castle (again near a village, not a town) is about 15km away, in very good condition and visited by tourists. But it was impossible to save both. No idea where you are from and no idea about your knowledge of the history of the Czech Republic or its castles.
@G G Game takes place in total shitholes (I mean today it's shithole) and in such shitholes places just look like that. Believe me in Czechia this is not normal and historical places are moustly in very good condition, but this region is total shithole. I was in few countries in Europe, even in western Europe and everywhere are places like this, if you saying everything and everywhere is in perfect condition then you are blind, especially in western europe many places look terrible.

I love this stuff. When I was first playing KCD I became utterly fascinated by the places and the history. So much so that I stalked the Czech Republic on Google Earth. As a former Stockholm tour guide, I get really, really into the history and places in these sorts of games, and I'm currently working on a video with a similar sort of message. I really wish more game devs would do this. I would argue that the early Assassin's Creed games did this very well, but no-one does it quite like Warhorse did it.
That is true. A few years back I visited Venice and I managed to navigate quite well just by remembering the map from AC II. Btw, i am a swede myself and i work in old town, stockholm:)
@@Max1990Power Cool. I used to work at the quays; guiding my guests round Vasa museet, Riddarholmen, Kungliga Slottet, Stadshuset, and... of course... Stortorget. I also used to take water tours out to fjäderholmarna.
And I wouldn't say it's people have moved on. They are proud of their history but they don't have the money or they don't want to rebuild everything it's more impactful and respectful to leave it as it is
If anything it's more respectful to rebuild because guaranteed everyone single one of those castle owners would be ecstatic to witness there castle still standing all this time later
I've been to Sázava monastery when I was about 5 and again last year. Good news - the frescoes are now being restored. They were mainly just painted over when the monastery got turned to a chateau.
I first got hooked into history playing Age of Empires as a child/teenager. *I always appreciated history based games after that. Wish there were more games like this so we could have fun while learning.*
We have over 460 castles, not counting chapels, churches and places of pilgrimage, of which there are countless in the Czech Republic. In a history full of wars and minor disputes, much has been lost, but historians and various foundations are trying to fix everything or what can be preserved. But it is not possible to such an extent.
Wow, I’m totally blown away by this. The details, the accuracy, the work they put in this game is incredible. Thank you guys for this video, quite inspiring.
I had no idea. I just thought they were ficticious places. This makes it even more immersive. What an incredible game. Every night I play, I can't wait. It's like stepping through a secret door back in time to another life
This game is my favourite RPG of all time - beats Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Suikoden. I really, really hope we get a sequel. I want to get that sword back!
Same here, maybe the Devs could make Henry and Capon gets ambushed by Cumans and got kidnapped to Hungary or maybe Germany and the first mission is to escape with Sir Hans Capon
One of the things I love about this game is that this is the first AAA game (if I am not wrong) that uses massively photogrammetry and computer vision methods for its graphics. I'm land surveyor and G.I.S. engineer myself, I use photogrammetry for my job in some cases that its needed. The church was the best example here to show to the people that don't know about this technology that this is the future. The power of making 3D models just from photos (well taken with a certain way photos actually) its huge. They were forced to "downscale" some models I guess just to not make the game more heavy that it is, but guys, this is the future, if the average person had better computers we could see magnificent graphics. I really look forward to see games using real monuments or places with very accurate and detailed representation using photogrammetry. Or even better, open world games that everything inside is made like that. I just love it
These comparisons made me realize just how realistic as in, close to reality the graphics look. It also made me realize that "realistic" graphics are not the epitome or the prettiest graphics to achieve. So in my opinion, games can and do look better than real life
I think that everybody from every country would like a video game studio to make a game like this about history with so much accuracy. Honestly as a french I would fancy something like this during the 100 years war or during the Albigenses crusade ! Even during small events or unknown periods in medieval ages ! Because everywhere is a place to learn about and so much interesting things that could become the perfect background for an historical game !
My family got a small cottage near the river (next to a mill!) so this game tool me back to my childhood and bring some memories. Some interest to mention: 2:46 no you cannor enter the old castle :( 3:56 two interesting things on real photo: the white building on the right, right behind the black car is a taver called “U Jindřicha” which is Henry in English - best tavern in Ratay! Building in the middel, with small tower on the roof, look at the chimney on lefr of the tower, you will see a small thing on the top of the chimney - thas is a head of nun made od stone. The legends says she was burried in the chimney alive with only her head kept outside and which turned to stone after some time later. (Better photo on 4:23 - the castle was teared down and a building on the real photo was build). Neuhof is today the right end of the Ratay village - there are no stables anymore, only cattle farm. The suroundings around Ledecz are the most accurate I have ever seen. We were biking all around Ratay, Talmberk, mostly Sasau (it is more far away in real life) so when I was playing, I barely opened the map to find some place.
awesome! I remember my first visit to Pompeii when I was young, to reach out and tough the stones that thousands of ancients touched was overwhelming and it made my love my own homeland's history more, I did work experience at the Kings Lynn Museum in Norfolk and I realised that ancient or at least medieval stones where everywhere to be touched and connect us to the history of ages past. So wonderful.
I love how Kingdom Come looks. I live in Poland which is close geographically to Czech. I've seen images like this my whole life because in my town there is a castle where lived princes. Landscapes are identical. It's kurwa just feels like home. Only this game, Witcher and Stalker made me feel like this. They feel familiar and fresh at the same time. Only Slavs can identify with them at deepest level. I happy that games like this got a lot of attencion on west recently and I hope more will be created.
actually we czechs are about 30% slavic about 30 % germanic and the remaining 30 % is jews, celtic etc.. the majority is slavic yea, but people sometimes forgot that majority can mean even 30 % sometimes. also look at czech surnames and almost everybody i know has atleast one german ancestor.
1:51 Technically that isn’t the main gate to Rattay, the main entrance is on the other side. It’s what you showed at 4:41. This side is the more like a back door/ side entrance.
The fact that Warhorse decided to make the game in such a small, rather random, part of Bohemia is a bold choice that only deserves praise. It illustrates how many history can be found basically anywhere in Europe as long as you are willing to divide deep and look for the lives of the individuals that populated this world.
I love KCD because of its environment design which is unparalleled to any known game. Riding a horse through a narrow road in the jungle at night while raining is an absolutely heavenly experience in this game. hyped for KCD2, I wish it comes in VR too.
I think some people went on vacation to the Greek islands after playing AC Odyssey because they're so beautiful in the game. It would be interesting if someone did something like this for that game too. Anyway good video.
Hey, our country has come trough a lot. For example, main church in Sasau monastery was never finished, becose of wars and changes through 15th century. But, yeah. Thanks, mr. Vávra and Warhorse studio.
you got one thing wrong: the didn't build the city according to the game, they build the game according to the city. 3:30 so that grass patch probably never existed and was added later who knows, but its in the game because its there in reality now.
The thing is that those places are not the most historicaly important. Before KCD i knew nothing about Rattay, i knew there is Sassau river and monastery. But never been there. Its perfect setting for KCD story. But Rattay is not Kutenberg or Prague. Ewen my home town Cheb/Eger was more historicaly important than Rattay.
I´m so happy KCD is getting that well deserved admiration. This game is beautiful even just for traveling around and feasting Your eyes on the landscapes and towns. Of course these old structures are getting overgrown, but it´s not like we forget it. These places are precious part of our history and are one of the most popular destination for weekend trips.

I am having a blast with this game. What a gem! It's hard to preceed as planned, though. I've barely touched the main quest so far as I always find myslef discracted by getting drunk with the priest, playing dice or teasing npcs. "What do you think this is? An inn? Get the hell out!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 such an underrated game.
I'm American, love history, and I'm so incredibly jealous of you Europeans being able to go visit these ancient towns and medieval buildings. *We still got you beat with National Parks though*
4:10 - many castles built in the Middle Ages were later rebuilt / modernized in a later architectural style (such as Renaissance), they were no longer having a defensive purpose, because they could be quite easily destroyed using cannons, but they became representative buildings, palaces etc.
especially in baroque times they destroyed everything, I like gothic architecture but I am always sad when I see something gothic reconstructed to stupid baroque style
I'm glad I bought this game I learned so much from the index and I feel like I lived in village in the Balkans in the early 15th century. Plus I learned an awesome curse word. KURVA!!!
Lol do you know where Balkan is??? Clearly not... Bohemia in not a Balkan. And they are not using word KURVA in Balkan, so you have learned nothing... nature different, architecture different... Balkan=Crotai, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece....
You compare a medieval town (14th century) to the same town today ... of course there are architectural differences ! It's the same in France and in many other countries : many towns have lost their ramparts, houses have been rebuilt several times, sometimes entirely (especially after the world wars) as construction techniques have evolved. So yes the roofs could have flattened, or the windows changed shape... etc.
The comment you made about people going there because of the game reminded me of when I was younger and a little bit after Vampire: Redemption came out I ended up in Prague and was amazed at what I learned from the game about it. I can't wait to get this game... and no idea how I've not heard about it till today.

It makes sense, NPCs were problem sometimes even in those bigger buildings...
I'd rather have a smaller open world that is rich and fully immersive though rather than a vast, repetitive barren wasteland like Fallout
and not to mention that people were simply shorter than nowerdays
Thing is, the czech republic does not has enough money to keep all the historical buildings in good shape. There are just to many of them. They focus on the bigger, historical more important ones.
If I become rich I will personally ensure no castle crumbles like the unfortunate talmberg

We have over 460 castles, not counting chapels, churches and places of pilgrimage, of which there are countless in the Czech Republic. In a history full of wars and minor disputes, much has been lost, but historians and various foundations are trying to fix everything or what can be preserved. But it is not possible to such an extent.

I just love it
I had lunch in Sasau where you meet Fritz and Matthew :-)
Wow
These comparisons made me realize just how realistic as in, close to reality the graphics look. It also made me realize that "realistic" graphics are not the epitome or the prettiest graphics to achieve. So in my opinion, games can and do look better than real life
Imagine living in this place and then playing the game and then being like "Woah that's the church I go to" weird
It sounds like you're holding in a sneeze anytime you speak
The attention to detail just blows my mind! Seeing it side by side just proves how incredible KCD is
And i hear i am wishing i was slav to experience that deeper connection
1:51 Technically that isn’t the main gate to Rattay, the main entrance is on the other side. It’s what you showed at 4:41. This side is the more like a back door/ side entrance.
That is so amazing! This actually made my day. Thanks for showing us this SB and send my humble regards to Jakob!
The fact that Warhorse decided to make the game in such a small, rather random, part of Bohemia is a bold choice that only deserves praise. It illustrates how many history can be found basically anywhere in Europe as long as you are willing to divide deep and look for the lives of the individuals that populated this world.

So yes the roofs could have flattened, or the windows changed shape... etc.
