  • In today's episode, I continue my exploration in Vancouver Island! I share with you my visits to yarn shops Mad About Ewe in Nanaimo and Sooke Yarn and Fibre in Sooke as well as the Cowichan Valley Fleece and Fibre Fair. Then I show you the gorgeous natural beauty of Vancouver Island's wild Pacific coast. As always, I'll do some show and tell about my current knitting projects, and, at the end, I make an announcement about the channel.

I have lived on Vancouver Island for decades and you’ve just taken me to places I have not been to- thank you! Your Alice Starmore sweater is an absolute work of art! I look forward to following you as you take your channel in a new direction.

Nice to see all your travels round Vancouver Island. As I live in Scotland I probably will not get over to Canada. When I travel I go to Australia as my daughter lives there. Thank you for your interesting podcasts.

Glad you enjoyed the video, Christine! Australia is far but it is lovely there. My husband’s from down under and I so enjoyed my visit to his home country.

My hiking days are over, and I am the proud new owner of an Eagle HD foldable power wheelchair, as full-time walker use is becoming just too painful because of osteoarthritis combined with lymphedema. Thus, wherever you choose to adventure is fine by me! I love the San Juan Islands, and never had the chance to visit Vancouver Island. Thank you for taking me along on your hikes. The scenery was stunning! I also followed in your footsteps and visited the yarn shops that you mentioned. I am most interested in local fibers and dyers. I just ordered Midknit Cravings APPETIZER SOCK SETS - 50g Half Skein w/ Coordinating 20g Mini - OOAK Aqua Speckle + Teal Mini (double order) which I think will make a fabulous shawl. In one of my project bags, I have yarn languishing because I intend to knit a two-strand vest and the cast on is 400 stitches. Partly because I am procrastinating and partly from guilt of needing some Christmas presents, I have diverted to Flossi’s Dorothy hat. The brim is a bit tedious knit one from the back loop and then purl one from the back loop for 20 rounds. The pattern is emerging rather pretty, but the purl is a bit of extra effort. I hope that the rest of the hat is not as challenging. Do you ever wear out your wrists and use copper-lined fingerless support gloves? I am new to combining mohair with fingering weight yarn and figuring out gauge. If you have any tips or encouragement, it will be appreciated! Temps in the single digits over the next 10 days at least in North Idaho. We will not be straying far from the wood stove, except for a round of Christmas cookie baking. Instead of a gingerbread house, I got a Godiva chocolate house kit. My granddaughter is flying here from Tokyo, and my sister arrives 1 hour before her from North Carolina, so this will be an exciting holiday! All best wishes for your holiday season!

Hi Beth! I am so glad you enjoyed the video. By the way, I found that Canada does a really good job of making trails and nature accessible. If you ever do get to Vancouver Island, the Lighthouse Loop Trail in Ucluelet is mostly paved, for example, with either asphalt or very well graded gravel. And we could see whales from the trail! Casting on 400 stitches is indeed daunting - that would make me procrastinate too. As it happens, the only time I can remember getting wrist pain was that one day I knit one Bear Paw sock in a day. I haven’t tried copper lined gloves. For the most part, I’m a looser knitter (for better or for worse), and I don’t tend to hold the yarn with a lot of tension. That might help. As for combining mohair with fingering - it is easier than it looks, I found. The mohair ‘likes’ the other wool and as you knit together they combine naturally. i convinced my skeptical mom to try it, and she was pleasantly surprised. I did see a good tip the other day - can’t remember where - and it’s to cast on with just the fingering and then knit your first pattern row with the combination. It looks pretty much the same. I do remember getting frustrated by missing the mohair on a couple stitches while doing a long tail cast on too fast, so this tip seemed like a great idea to me! Happy knitting! And I hope you have a lovely holiday season with your family!

I always enjoy your episodes. I am sorry your travel wings are clipped. I loved seeing your sweater from the 80's. I was knitting in the 80's. I can't fit into some of the sweaters I knit then as I have "expanded". I have 1 sweater I can wear now; I knit it in 1988. It has the drop shoulder and was oversized then. It is not as oversized now, but, thankfully, it fits! It was knit from a woo./cotton blend; thus is works great for our climate in Tidewater, VA. I enjoy wearing it quite a bit. I know your channel will evolve, and we will continue to enjoy your content! Best wishes for a Happy Holiday season!

There is an amazing Artisans Market on Salt Spring Island on Saturday mornings from April to Oct. An easy ferry ride over to Salt Spring. An event not to be missed if you are in the area.

The Juan de Fuca Trail and further North The West Coast Trail were originally developed as a way for survivors of ship wrecks on the coast to make their way to safety as it would take rescuers a long time to make their way to the site of a shipwreck.

Thanks Gail! I did not know that. I surely wouldn’t want to be shipwrecked there. It’s very wild!

There used to be a lovely little yarn shop in Tofino but it might be gone now. Ucluelet is pronounced : You Clue Let Nanaimo is pronounced: Nah nye mo.
