- Welcome back to Fish Like Us! Today we’re going to show you a rig setup perfect for beginners and also used by pros. This is a fishing for beginners video with a seasoned twist - the fish finder rig.
The fish finder rig is an unbeatable rig for catching a variety of fish. We have hooked everything with this rig including:

This is a classic rig setup for bass fishers in the freshwater and is often used in the saltwater with the same purpose: to find fish. Nice vid. Was trying to explain this rig to a friend who's just getting into fishing and shoed him this. Personally I like to use a snell exclusively for octopus hooks (bent eyelets) because it gives the hook a straight seating onto the line. For hooks with straight eyelets I normally just go with an improved clinch.

Folks...this is NOT a fish finder rig ..this is a standard Carolina rig. Main difference in the FF rig is the weights only has a limited travel distance where as in a carolina rig, the weight can travel any distance.

Thank you so much for the simple illustrations. Just yesterday I got a violent bite. As I tried to reel it in, it suddenly got very light. The entire rig was missing!!! I don't know if the monster fish had bitten the whole rig off or if I had tied it on improperly. I'm leaning more toward improperly tucking of the line when finishing the cinch part. But it was a big fish though. 🐟🤣

how long should the leader be?
I use rig as an "whipping" rig with egg leads or bubble floats with lures or squids strips.

what pound test is your leader line? I typically use only 15 pound but that looks like a lot more!

Hello, for the leader line do you use the same line or different line with bigger weight?
This all depends on your fishing conditions. Here in FL we use lighter main line and larger leader.
What is the difference between this and the Carolina rig? Or are they the same basically?
Sublet variations. Bead, no bead. Different knots, leader, region. Otherwise the concepts are the same.
What size leader line do you recommend
Leader line varies by targeted species. However, for inshore, I like 20-30lb leader.
What measurement would you suggest for leader line fishing a jetty
We prefer a 2-3ft leader! Good luck out there!
It’s not called a “cinch” knot. It’s called “clinch” and what you actually tied is an “improved clinch” knot.
Nice vid, but I usually put an orange bead between the weight and swivel, so it doesn't damage it every time I cast it
A useful technique
Would you put this weight on a braid main line? From my experience, the egg weights can cut into it and weaken the line. I lost a really big fish.
Great question! I have learned: when using this rig over and over (casted out into saltwater often). It degrades the line to line connection. One can mitigate this effect by placing a small plastic bead in-between the swivel and the sinkers.

Wonder if you lock your reel when the sinker hits sea bottom or you leave it unlocked so the bait kinda flows with water to find fish
I always wondered about this and no one clarified it to me yet
This rig will sit on the bottom. Unless there is a huge current, the weight will most likely sit in one place. Your bait, depending on the length of the leader may drift around giving it a much more natural presentation.

The idea of the fish finder rig is as YOU described, you can let the sinker bury into the sea floor and let as much line out as you like to let the bait and hook drift around the current, it also helps fish not feel the tension on the line of the weight. I use a slip swivel with a 4oz pyramid weight and do exactly what you asked, let the line run loose in the current
@@SCDeerAddict oh, that makes more sense to me now. This perfect for controlling amount of line u want to allow to drift before you reel it back in. It also gives a pause/resume feature to bait drifting! Can't wait to try it thank you 👍

That's a improved clinch knot
This is called “ improved clinch knot”
I tried this type of rig style and it get tangled easily. Is the any solution for this problem
Try a slider same concept
Try adjusting the size of weight and leader. Sometimes the two sink at different rates and the bait will spin around the main line. Also, I find this a great rig to use from shore, but I do not prefer it for fishing straight down from a pier or boat.
Make sure you are hooking bait properly. Narrow end of bat chunks on hook side so bait doesn’t tend to spin on the way down

Don’t you need a bead
Use a bead to protect your knot from a crashing weight. I prefer to use beads if there is a large weight (3/4oz or bigger). But I do know folks who won’t use it any other way.

excellent tutorial, excellent video. except for my one quibble: the mouth sounds when wetting the knot. Really, really terrible; and yah, I felt the need to point it out also. Nasty mouth sounds. They are not actually nasty because it’s just you, alone, and no food, so, you are not spreading nastiness to other people, thank goodness. But the sound is absolutely grating, and terrible, and infuriating on video. Did you not think that when you reviewed the video prior to upload? Did you even review your own video prior to upload? Good lord, guy. I’ve watched plenty other fishing knot videos where the creator did not include nasty mouth sounds when wetting their knot. Nasty, too loud mouth sounds - a “cardinal” sin of video production, in my individual opinion. Like, video production 101, manage your sound levels relative to the position of the microphone, and don’t put nasty sounds in a specifically “non-comedy”, educational video. There might be a time and a place for nasty mouth sounds in like, a stupid comedy video, but this ain’t it. Otherwise, exactly the video I was looking for, how to learn to tie the “fish finder rig”.
