  • Welcome back to another vlog. Join me as I head to Brixton in London, where I meet up with my friend Tasha who I met whilst I was in Jamaica. Tasha takes me around Brixton and I'm curious to find out if Brixton has the same vibes and energy of Jamaica. Whilst exploring Brixton I soon begin to realise just how heavily the Jamaican culture is embedded into the community.

Brixton has changed a lot over the years. Just in the past 10yrs alone it’s changed so so much. It makes me sad how much influence my little island has had on the world and the way we’ve been treated in this country breaks my heart man. They keep pushing us out and what you said about the prices. When you kept saying it’s expensive, can you imagine for us who are born Jamaicans living in this place?! That’s why when we travel we bring back so much. Appreciate your honest review of that place. I don’t view Brixton as little Jamaica. Maybe once upon a time but not now.

I remembered when I was a kid back in the early 50s, when a lot of people left Jamaica for England, a lot of them made good for themselves and some retired and came back to build homes in Jamaica. Their children grand children and great grand children are now living in Brixton and elsewhere in Europe. Bless up jess.

Nice presentation..cus you also mentioned Windrush.
What prompted me to comment was your statement.. ”first time grieving for a country.”
Can you imagine what it was like for children ages say 8 to 12-15 years old? One hour we with our relative’s in the country side or towns, sunshine, foods etc. in our islands.
24 hours later..in cold, grey damp London, Birmingham etc. of the 1960’s 70’s?
We were 2nd & 3rd generation Windrush who’s families intended to return to Jamaica but when they experienced how difficult things were..they started sending for us.
i am traumatized to this day (in some ways) however..we made the most of it..vibing up & helping to build Knotting hill carnival 😊 siting our rasta culture there etc. Some of us were able to leave UK to other countries mostly as adults but spare a thought for my peers who had to stay with said feeling you described.. “grieving for the Jamaica we knew back then.” 😢
Keep up your “good” works. Peace.

The Jamaican influence in Brixton isn't what it was in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. They're now part of the
'Windrush' history, with a square in Brixton being named Windrush Square in 1998, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush ship in 1948 on which the first set of Jamaicans and other Caribbeans arrived in London. Brixton has now become a trendy area with many nationalities running bars, restaurants, etc. Small snippets of the Jamaican influence remain but for the most part, most of the early generation sold up their huge houses and moved on - either back to Jamaica or other areas in London. Their offsprings live all over London and other parts of England because it's now become very expensive to live in Brixton. Jamaicans have now become part of the history of Brixton.

Agreed should of come before, 50's, 60's 70's and 80's following the uprising of the 80's Brixton has gone through a major changes, with the original population and their extended families moving out, allowing for the gentrification of what was Brixton. The way Jamaica makes you feel as a person is so different from these Jamaican communities all over in these foreign countries. I remember your episode about how you felt just as a woman of different size and background and what western societies push. I love what the experience has done for you and in the same way, what you are doing to shake the stigma of the island. Big up yourself and you are worldwide.

Whether its the people who like to make a joke out of a bad situation ( the Irish legacy) the food or climate it leaves an impression. Hence not surprised you didn't feel it in Brixton. Jess you are not a 9 to 5 person you'll be bored. Why else would you up sticks leave Australia to London then on a whim to jamaica, I believe you are a traveller who needs to explore the world.

Yes, Brixton has changed. Because of Not enough Jamaican stakeholders in the area. Meaning those who brought commercials and domestic property lay no claim to Brixton. Cultures that withstood the test of time are like the Southhall Indian community, many parts of East London Pakistani and Bengali communities, North London Jewish communities, and Brents Sri Lankan community. In my younger days, I remember Brixton. Unfortunately - I feel we don't appreciate what we had until it's gone

Haveyou ever wondered why the Jamaican Flag is basically the same as Scotland but with different colours? Did you know there is currently parts of Ireland that still speak and sound close to the Jamaican Patwa.

Good to see you in London, Jess. How is your dad doing? When Immigrants migrate, even though we take parts of our culture with us we have to assimilate to the new society, which makes us lose parts of ourselves. I don't know if this is what you are noticing without fully seeing it. Also, you have such a deep love for Jamaica, I think you might be feeling some sympathy for what Jamaicans might be going through after Hurricane Beryl.

Hi Jess. It makes total sense what you are feeling. Being in Jamaica, I'm sure felt spiritual and you got to embrace the authenticity of the land and the people. Nothing will quite compare. Plus you probably feel like a piece of yourself was left behind because you connected so deeply and you did so much growing there. It can feel bitter sweet. But life is about experiencing all you can, while you can so you could continue to grow. And within that growth your love for life will heighten. Love is all around ♥️. Thank you for sharing your videos.

Hi Jess, love your work. I identify with what you say about people imposing their own restrictions and expectations onto others. Remember, to thy self be true. It's only then you can be of value to others. Take on board opinions and advice, analyse carefully then make your own way in life.
