spencer2294112 that’s gonna be a big jump of a camera if you get the g9! That ibis really makes a difference in video for me and that hi res mode is useful for still subjects! Have you held a g9 yet? It feels really nice in the hand!
Kim Cruz no I haven't seen it in person yet, there aren't any stores near me that would have it. I've just been watching reviews online. I actually might wait for a g85 replacement hopefully with good autofocus. Also, what's in your camera bag?
spencer2294112 yeah a g7 and g85 replacement would be nice huh? As for me I use a g85 and g7 and a bunch of primes! Sounds like a good idea for a video!! Lol
I went with the G7 because the weather sealing and IBIS were not huge factors for me and didn’t justify the price increase. I am so far completely happy with this camera! I moved to M43 from Nikon’s F mount.
Hey man. I'm not one to comment on youtube but I wanted to say I subbed to your channel primarily because you seem down to earth, genuine and have a pleasant demeanor. So many youtubers try to be overblown and do whatever they can to get views but you appear to stay true to yourself. Very much enjoyed the review and look forward to future ones! Good luck to you.
The G85 has a small, but noticeable bump in IQ compared to the G7. The bumplet comes from slight better color, a tiny amount of extra detail, and some smoother gradients. It's almost the same as the GX85. The G7 is lighter and completely silent. The G7 is more prone to electrical problems. The G7 needs to be hacked to record over 30 minutes. It cannot be emphasized enough the difference in image stabilization. This, in combination with the reliability makes the G85 the best choice. For $50 you can add a battery grip to the G85 which doubles the battery life and allows for remote shutter as well as vertical grip. It also allows you to have a built in UPS when using a dummy battery. The G85 has a better shutter which is a real improvement. Lastly, the G85 records your movie in one big file. That's great if nothing goes wrong....not so great if the file is corrupted.
I got the g85 because of it resolved a shutter shock issued the g7 had, weather sealing which I asume makes it last longer, IBIS, and “better photo quality”. I would have wanted a GH5 but it wasn’t in my budget.
yeah honestly i think you can save the extra 1,000 dollars and buy yourself another nice lens or a light, or a better mic... or literally anything else worth a 1000 dollars!
honestly i never saw it in my pictures, but basically at very normal shutter speeds like 1/120 you can see some shake in the camera because the shutter mechanism wasn't so stable.. again, never saw it in my camera but seems like lots of other people...
Of course g85 it's better.. But I bought a sealed box G7 14-42 kit for 400€ a year ago. And g85 was over 800€ at the time. 😕 I use g7 mainly for video on tripod, I want ibis for manual lenses but it was out of budget sadly, otherwise it was my camera choice. On low light same performance g7/g85, so I invested on a D610 FF body for that, not a micro 4/3 as main still camera. Fast M 4/3 are really expensive and still behind FF ones, speaking of dof: you can't achieve a true 1.4 dof equivalent on m4/3, and speedbooster cost a lot to improve the situation (and can degrade image too) So stupid btw to see they move mic input on G85 causing problem when the screen flip, on g7 is perfect on top of the side. I'm really thinking about a single brand gear, don't know if sell everything and get olympus 4/3 which have ibis on every camera or fuji (but no stabilized and expensive lenses). There are pro and cons leaving FF
Agreed. I have both. In my view, they are essentially the same with one BIG exception... THE IBIS. The stabilizer on the G85 is AMAZING. So if you liked the G7, you'll LOVE the G85. I'm keeping both for now and sharing batteries and lenses. Enjoying keeping my zoom or wide angle on the G7, then using the G85 for vlogging and hand held videos with the 12-58mm kit. Works great. Curiously, I find that the autofocus works slightly differently between the cameras too. I've found settings that work great for both, but they are slightly different.
Last year, I was looking around to see if the G7 was worth buying, then I stumbled across one of your videos. You were informative and straight to the point. Watching your video really helped me in my decision and I bought the G7 shortly after. I'm really happy I got the G7, great price for a great camera. Thanks for your help, you make great videos and I look forward to seeing more from you!
I chose the G7, after watching a bazillion comp vids. I’m happy with it but I am definitely let down by it’s cheap plastic build quality. I appreciate it lightness and portability but I prefer something to feel a little more solid like my old Nikon D 70. But I use my cameras to document my professional livelihood, rather than directly for my professional livelihood.
I have g7, it doesn't have some distinct characteristics I think but at the same time g7 is all-rounder camera for beginners. And in my opinion, g85 can be worthy about photography because of battery grip capability.
I shoot weddings and quinceaneras and I use three g7's and now I have included an lx100. I think it's a waste of money getting the g85. Having ibis isn't important as I never go handheld. And the reason I bought the lx100 is because I was in the market for another 12-35mm f2.8 and came across the lx100 with a 24-70mm f1.7-f2.8. lol the quality I get from the lx100 is identical to the g7 with 12-35mm and I paid $389 for the lx100 whereas the 12-35mm alone is over $700
Jorge Martinez hey That’s great information to know! I didn’t know the lx100 had such a wide aperture of a lens! And yeah I think ibis is really just for going handheld and a most of the shoots I do require handheld shots or gimbal shots.. in either case if you don’t go handheld save your money and get the g7! In 2018!!
As I'm looking for a camera that that has at least 16 MP, a 4K resolution (30 fps! Full), with a flip screen, & mic input, under $800! Is this the bet one??
Just out of curiosity, Don't you think its more economical to buy the G7 and a gimbal like the zhiyun crane to get the same result for less than the price of the G85?
Hi mohammed yeah it would be, and i already run that set up... i use a g7 on a gimbal and use the g85 handheld.. i use prime lenses so it's more convenient to have 2 bodies... and it's always good to have a backup when you're being paid to shoot!
Yes, but a gimbal gets exhausting. Anything that adds complication or weight should be avoided for professional work. Days get long when you have gear issues or it's all heavy. Now if you're just a hobbyist, go for it. But for long days shooting weddings and events, give me IBIS
Just wanna ask you a question. My Olympus OMD-EM5's shutter got stuck and is now unusable. During this time, apart from the kit lens on the EM5, I had invested in the Olympus 25mm f1.8, 45 mm f1.8, 40-150mm f4-5.6. As you know, all these lenses from Oly have no in-built stabilisation. I am now planning to buy either the Panasonic G85 or G7 but stick to using my Olympus lenses. What do you suggest would be a better option? The G85 with the IBIS or the G7 without the stabilisation?
Hey man really sorry for the late reply I don't know why I get notifications for some comments but not others! Ok this one is simple, it's 2020, every camera should have ibis! If you're mostly into photos you can expand your options to the gx85 and gx9 as well! My personal choice between those cameras would be a g85 for overall photos and videos, and gx85 or gx9 if you only do photos. If you can though, the G9 is significantly more, but you are getting A LOT for your money- something for both high end photos and videos!
Thanks man actually most cameras aren’t unless you go with a newer full frame camera! For m43 you either have to get a faster prime lens or find a way to light yourself better indoors!
So 6 months ago I wrote that I was using g7s and would be waste of money to upgrade to g85. Boy was I wrong. I sold all my g7s and the lx100 and now own three g85s and one gx8. The IBIS in the g85 is freakin amazing! I feel stupid for my previous comment. I can hand hold the g85 with the Sigma 18-35mm while a bride is walking down an Isle and man, no shake whatsoever! And maybe it's just me but I see the quality of the g85 just a tad bit better than the g7
lol no worries man honestly not everyone sees the benefit for IBIS- some people just like shooting on tripods which is fine- but actual handheld footage is a reality these days with IBIS... as for the quality, it's true panasonic removed the AA filter but in my use I haven't seen much of a difference but i'm glad that you do!
Awesome video, just subbed! I started out with the G7 and got the G85 mainly for IBIS, which really helps out with video of course, but also for making stills sharp af. One thing that boggles my mind about the G85's design is the awkward placement of the mic input, right in the way of the flip screen when it's in selfie mode. The G7 got it right with making the mic input above the screen zone. Why Panasonic changed the mic input placement on the G85 is beyond me. I still use the G85 all the time tho and will regularly recommend the G7 to anyone on a smaller budget.
thanks man and yeah they're both great for different uses. The g7 is a great budget option and really, if you're not doing any handheld video it's perfectly fine! For my setup I use the g7 on a gimbal and the g85 handheld.. it works out!
Thanks for this. I've had the G7 for 3 years and it's been through a lot. Originally I planned to upgrade to the G9 but for now I'm going to get the G85 + GoPro hero 7.
just don't neglect any good deals for the G9 if you see one! a guy just commented yesterday about how he went to a camera show and the G9 was selling for around $1,100! if you see any of those deals, unless you really need the cash, go for the g9!
Just bought the camera today for my UA-cam channel, I found everything you said about the camera G7 to be spot on. Gonna shoot a video to upload tomorrow hopefully without editing. Can you recommend any editing software that works with this camera. *NEW Subscriber*
Thanks! Unfortunately I don’t know of any free video editors except for iMovie which is only on Mac but I really hope you enjoy the camera! It’s a beast of a camera for the price!!
you are one of the most positive faces out there so .. keep up the splendid work .. You are the main reason why I got my G7 in the first place! This cam just .. well .. I can't describe how it .. made me go back being .. creative!
George Sayegh they are peak design straps! Basically they anchor the strap so you can easily take it on and off which is useful when I’m using straps when going handheld, and then taking straps off when on a gimbal (the strap messes up the gimbal)! Glad you like the video!
Thanks for another great video. I have a G7, and mainly use the 20mm 1.7 but really have problems with slow focus. I like the lens and camera and when shots work they are great but I'm getting a lot of softees. What camera settings do you recommend for B&W portrait stills on G7/20mm?
Laurie Faen hey man normally I just set it at f4 and shoot but you’re right the 20mm was too slow to focus for the things that I do so I replaced it.. in terms of black and white normally I just shoot in raw and edit it later!! I rarely go out and shoot black and white because I won’t have the flexibility later!
Great video! I shoot with two g85 and a gh5 for our multicam interview setups. I was looking to get a third g85, but I think I’ll just get a g7 now thanks to your video! Keep up the great content!
I'm here so soon that I'm watching in gross 360p. Thanks for this, I've been curious. I also feel like if you're blowing $1000 on a G85, you'd be better off getting a used GH5 body for $1500 OR a G7 with a really nice lens like the 12-35mm f/2.8 instead. The G85 feels like an unnecessary "baby GH5" iteration that doesn't really justify its double price tag.
Jody Bruchon GH5 is an unweildy beast, but it's an amazing camera, my friend has it and I own the g7, overall you can get really close with the g7 if you have the right equipment. You've got a tough choice between the three
Just to chime in I didn’t see this original comment about the gh5.. so where I live it’s hard to find second hand bodies.. but if that were a choice I would have gone with the gh5 for that price!
Or u get a used G85 for 500 bucks with 1 year warrenty in like new condition. Then the G7 doesnt make sense for 400 used and the G85 is 1/3 the price of a used GH5. We have two people with g7 and two with g85 and one with g7. The main difference is the IBIS especially for video. Its a day and night difference and I dont wanna miss it. But weather proof is also very important if ur not a house dog.
Thanks for the comparison, I would like to know which camera you suggest among Fuji X-T20, M-50 & Lumix-G80/85. I stay in a city and I go Trekking/hiking quite often. As my need is both in city surrounding (to say Dubai, which has beaches, Buildings and park's) and while going on Trekking (say on a nature photography-Hills, mountains and Falls). Please suggest me the one if you know better what is best for my need. If you have any other option please do let me know. Thanks In Advance
no problem man glad you liked it! Ok so to start, these 3 cameras are amazing for their price, and you could be happy with any one of these cameras! So, keep that in mind as you read below! Ok so if it's mostly for photography and you care about ABSOLUTE image quality, I have to go with the Fuji XT20. It will just take the best photos from the cameras you listed- especially if you don't edit your photos. However, if you want to upgrade your lenses in the future, Fuji lenses are expensive. Also, the form factor and layout of the fuji is different to most modern cameras so it's worth trying it out at a camera store to see if you like it. The canon m50 is also great, and the layout is definitely more traditional. The biggest weakness for this camera is the lenses in the system. If you want to upgrade in the future, there is just not that many lenses on the system. However if you ever record video, this camera has the best AF of the 3 cameras by far! The body is also quite compact which i like. The G85 will be weather sealed, and usually comes with the 12-60mm lens which is also weather sealed. If i had to guess which camera of the 3 will last the longest, it will be the G85. The sensor size is slightly smaller than the other 2, but the body is actually a little bit bigger than the other 2. The grip on this camera is the biggest among the 3 and feels the best for me. I can hold it in one hand and not be afraid of dropping it. It also has the best video quality from the 3, but the video autofocus is the worst of the 3! The lens ecosystem is very big here. Lastly, the kit lenses the fuji and canon are more the usual focal ranges, the fuji sells for around $800, the canon $700. But the panasonic sells for $800 but comes with a zoom lens that can go from wide to very zoomed in, and that lens is very good in terms of sharpness for this level! For this reason, I would buy the g85 just because if im hiking, i would prefer to have 1 lens that does it all, very wide to very tight! With the other 2 cameras, you will need another lens to go more zoomed in. Just remember the 3 cameras you mentioned are all good, but little things like handling (does it feel right for you), and the lenses that are available will mostly be the main reason you chose one over the other!
@@KimCruz1 thank you so much dude. It was very detail and informative. Thanks again!! I got the same recommendation from a friend of mind who is working in a camera showroom. But wanted to double check with expert like you. Moreover I'm not an professional photographer rather I would not be using it regularly.. So as u mentioned one lenses will make both needy stuff to me. City or street photography and the nature falls and wildlife a little bit. :)
Hey man sorry didn’t see this! If you want overall value I would go with the g85. However if you want better overall image quality (and less lens selection and a bit more expensive lenses) go sony. Perhaps consider a good compromise in the a6100?
honestly there's 3 things to look into. 1. Is it raining/rainy and will your lens get wet. If not, then the g7 is fine. 2. Are there areas with extreme temperature drops? If it's humid but the temp is the same everywhere you're going, then it shouldn't bother the camera. It's only when you go a cold place to a relatively hot/humid one that condensation sets in. If not, the G7 is fine. 3. Is it so humid that there is condensation happening without any temperature changes? Then you're screw I wouldn't bring either camera there lol.. To be fair, I've been to relatively humid places that were almost this bad with my G7 and didn't have any problems. the key is to make sure the G7 is at the same temperature as the rest of the environment. In summary, unless it's raining all the time, or it's super humid that there's condensation without any extreme temperature changes, then you should be fine. if you want to play it safe however, get the g85.
it's always 90-100% humidity and these forests are often at high elevations so we get the temperature drop (down to 18°C). Gonna use the camera for field surveys - mostly for small animals very up close. Most of the people I know use DSLRs but I really don't like the bulkiness of those cameras.
Thanks for the comparison. Looking at a g85 to upgrade too from my gopros for my channel. It seems they are similarly priced now on ebay. Thanks again! I subbed!!
@@Warren3carpentry hey man it won't shoot 120 FPS but in my experience it's more flexible to shoot in 60fps because 120 requires a lot of light (faster shutter speeds) although I guess if you aren't very experienced with handling cameras it's helpful to start. In general 120 is more of a 'nice to have' feature. As for which cameras are best for video autofocus it's been a while since I've scanned the landscape but the usual suspects are canon and Sony- canon being the gold standard. These are all compromises though so let me give you a general overview of what you gain/lose in each system. Panasonic pros and cons: Great video quality Great ergonomics and easy to use One of the biggest of not the biggest lens selection for mirrorless camera systems (important down the line) Smaller sensor means it will have more noise compared to similarly priced cameras (not as good in low light) Video autofocus isn't good (photo autofocus is great but not for sports) Canon Best video af Colors are generally seen as the best (personal preference) Good menus (not as easy as Panasonic in my opinion) Pound for pound good video quality but in my experience you need their higher end cameras to produce very good quality video Lens selection iffy (their APSC mirrorless line seems to be something they are going to leave and there are not a lot of lenses If you go canon mirrorless get their full frame offering (canon RP) becuase that one has a future Sony Good video af Good video quality from the bottom all the way to the top of the range Lens selection has grown over the years The fastest innovating camera company Lenses can get expensive Some older models (not sure about new ones) had had 1080p video but great 4K- this is not good because it means you need to shoot in 4K all the time and the file sizes are huge. Again these are generalizations so it's important to see the specific models! I hope this helps!
Those are my two main options, I’m starting On my own bussines food commercial videos so, I don’t need audio input but IBIS it’s a must. Thank you for this video. You have a New suscriber
I bought the G7 with kit lens for $400 new on Adorama. Every 2 months or so Gx85 with 2 diff lenses goes on sale new for $600. If I could do it over should I get the gx85 since it has internal stabilization? Isn't a gimbal fairly necessary for g7 filmmaking? The crane M goes on sale for around $400. I may get that and a prime lens if I decide to keep the g7...I'm more interested in stills ATM and so I'm eyeing a sale for Nikon D3400...that takes good vids too so it seems perfect for my desire to learn on under 2k budget
wow what a great deal for $400! and if you could do it over again, i think it's really simple. for stills get the gx85, for video get the g7. I wouldn't use the gx85 on my pro shoots just because of the grip/weight combination (it FEELS heavy and the grip is small) and the battery is small. smaller battery + IBIS isn't a good combo.. as for a gimbal being necessary, i'd say no.. tripods and monopods still do the trick.. but if you want to incorporate big movements into your shots, then absolutely YES. just know that before my g85, i did a lot of handheld work with the G7 + the 42.5mm 1.7, and the kit lens and a handy camera strap!
You can go pretty far with the g7, don't waste your money on another camera unless it's needed, my website has a few product pictures taken with my g7 and the stock lens with a macro attachment. www.sayeghjewelers.com/shop
Kim Cruz Kim, there Is a power adapter that allows you to use g7 or g85 while plugged into electrical outlet. For indoor shoots its possible to use either cam without worry of battery dying. Of course shooting on wired power isn't practical outdoors or in some cases but I thought it's worth a mention!
Kim can I see some videos u shot with the g7 because I have a feeling your yt CH isn't showing a great deal of the video love shot with the g7 and I'd love to see what pro work you've pulled off with it!
Andres F I’m actually trying to figure out how to incorporate that into my videos in the future, however if you just want a list now head over to kimcruz.me/videos you can see some of my favorites there!
But what about autofocus tho? I've seen on so many videos that the autofocus on the G7 simply cannot compete with say the Sony a5100, or the Cannon M50; but what's the deal with the autofocus on the G85? Is it better than in the G7? I'm trying to decide among the a5100, the G7 and the G85. Thanks guys!
when it comes to video autofocus (emphsizing video because stills vs video AF perform differently) the g7 and g85 can't compete with a canon... canon is basically the best with video AF though... if you plan on using video AF a lot i suggest you go with a canon... but comparing the G7 vs the G85 in terms of video AF in video, i'd say the g85 is slightly better (but not reliable like canon).... in any case, go with canon if you need AF, go with panasonic if you want sharper 1080p and 4k footage!
@@KimCruz1 Thanks for the reply brother! For my case, I would have the camera mounted on a tripod most of the time, so even though I seem to care too much about AF, I am still willing to deal with manual focus. However, another concern of mine is that the G7 & G85 only shoot shoot 100 Mbps video on 4K, while they will only do 28 Mbps on 1080, which some said it was crap. The problem is, my MacBook Pro (15", 2015, 2.2 i7) doesn't have a dedicated GPU, and I fear editing 4K on that machine will be a pain in the butt. Does your Mac have a dedicated GPU, and would you recommend editing on 4K without one? Thanks again!
@@pac05055 lol man dont worry about people saying 100mbs in 4k or 28 mbps in 1080p.... in general all the cameras you talked about shoot at that rate.. it's only when you buy higher end cameras like the gh5 where you get higher bit rates but that doesn't really matter unless you really want to grade your footage a lot... as for editing, i use a mac, basically almost the same as yours but from 2013 with no dedicated GPU but final cut edits 4k really fast.. you can even check out premier vs final cut render times on youtube, i'm sure there are videos out there lol.... editing on final cut pro is always fast.. but premier is generally slower so if you're on premier, just know that up front...
@@KimCruz1 Alright, thank you so much for the info bro! Yeah I do edit on Final Cut as well so I know 4K will be better there than on Premier, which I have never used btw. Okay man that being said, I think I'm finally making up my mind for the G85, which happens to be at $700 down from $1000 on Best Buy and Amazon at the moment, which is nice. Oh and just so you know, we share the same last name :P Cheers!
The Sony has slightly better image quality, OTOH the m43 sensor is better for scenes where you want more DOF. It's tough to get, for example, the full cast of a concert, dance scene or a play in full focus. Also the Sony's overheat which is a real bummer.
Hy, Do you know if G85 model got HDMI LIVE mode and keep sending video signal trough the HDMI out put during filming ? ( My DMC-FZ300 LUMIX shutdown the monitor and give me a nice black window !!! ) PS : Same limitation on GH7 !!
but i mostly go to the g7 and bought a steadicam or a gimbal (so i can use with other cameras too, g85 is to completely portable ... i like to built stuff bigger
Kim, I saw your videos 1st when I searched for info on g7. Love your content so I subscribed same day. Let me pass on my wisdom since you pass on yours. Go to SlickDeals website. Follow a tag you're interested in (for example Sony a6300) they will email you when its on sale- its how I got my got a Ryzen 7 1700x for $165 and my g7 kit for $400. I learned thru there a lot, like A7 iii is going for around 2k USD new on a site called Greentoe.
Andres F this is what I’m talking about!! Dude this is what this channel is all about! This is community thanks so much for sharing I would never have known!! Pinned this comment to make sure others see!!
hi so sorry for the late reply, yes it's good but if you just want to take photos, i would recommend getting a different camera, but if you need some photos and videos, i'd say it's worth it!
hey sorry i am actually not sure about this, but if i remember correctly, the G85 ports are slightly different on the left side of the camera, so that might be an issue with the g7! Also, the g85 is slightly bigger than the g7 so that may also be an issue!
jimbo33 thanks man and me too! I was sooo close to getting the gx85 but went with the g7 in the end for the mic jack.. if the gx85 had one I would have totally bought it!!
Kim Cruz, ibis was the deciding factor for me. It’s my first ilc and i really like ibis and the lack of an anti aliasing filter. Your vids are very good and helpful without being too long and drawn out. Thanks!
Hey man honestly both are basically the same! The main difference is the sensor stabilization on the g85 and if you ask me, I would only buy cameras with sensor stabilization at this point. Also, I made a vid about this it might help you out! ua-cam.com/video/ltRQj1Dn14M/v-deo.html
First off what do you mean by a strap? You keep mentioning it for stabilization and I haven't really had to really ever deal with the issue until now: my first real camera was the GX85(only had point-n-shoots before it) and I grabbed a Sony NEX5R for $120 after winning a Viltrox EF-E II speedbooster for $10 on eBay. So while I love having what is effectively a full frame camera, I don't like that none of my footage is stabilized. 2nd as an owner of a GX85 is the G85 much of an upgrade outside of the aux input? Like is it a worthwhile upgrade for someone like me?
Sam M. Atherton so I use a camera strap on my neck and extend the camera so its pulling tight against my neck.. one of the ways to get more stablefootage without a tripod or something like that. Honestly don’t get the g85 overrhe gx85- it’s the same sensor but like you said just missing an aux port. Supposedly the g85 has better stabilization but I doubt anyone will notice, just about the only other thing would be the ergonomics with it’s bigger grip but you can always buy an extra grip for the gx85!
hey man you have to use manual focus! but it's easier to use your smartphone for getting focus on your face i made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/qIRfe1DE0T8/v-deo.html
it's weird how... 3 years later, the G7 can still compete against cameras above its price range! you're right it's basically $500 for ibis and if you're on sticks or gimbals, you don't need it!
At 3:12 did u mean to say g7 instead of g85? Also I've seen people hacking PAL to NTSC in g7, does it work the other way round? NTSC to PAL? Haven't seen anyone doing that and also read somewhere the hack doesn't work for NTSC to PAL? Can anyone help me with this please?
Vinesh Ninnurkar hey man yeah I did mean g7! I haven’t seen ntsc to pal but I’ve definitely tried pal to ntsc and for the most part it’s fine, it just shows you an exclamation point every time you turn off the camera instead of the Lumix logo.. but it would be worth trying the same hack from pal to ntsc and seeing if that works?
Kim Cruz Thnx! I need a PAL version and I'm going to buy from US probably so I want to be sure I can switch from NTSC to PAL... G85 supports both right? Confused between G7 and G85 :S
Vinesh Ninnurkar I wouldn’t risk buying an ntsc version man it seems like the hack only goes from Pal to ntsc! It might be worth buying a pal version elsewhere instead!
Kim Cruz yea true... G85 has both so that also might do.. and how is SL2 compared to these two? By just taking video quality and detail in consideration at 1080p.
when i compare the footage side by side i notice that the G7/g85 is sharper (but maybe it's also do with my lenses, the sl2 had a kit lens), but the canon has nicer colors straight out of camera. If you know what kind of videos you want to make and don't need to edit colors so much, the canon is a better option, especially for it's autofocus also. But in terms of sharp video quality, the g7 beats it out. honestly, it's up to you, g7 has better quality footage (but you only notice when it's right next to each other, unless you're super super anal or something), but the canon wins in terms of colors and autofocus. if you need the AF, go with the canon, it'll save you money on lenses too! if you need absolutely sharpness and 4k, get the g7.
it depends man! if you need autofocus do NOT upgrade to the G7.. if you can live with manual focus, 100% upgrade! The footage will look much sharper, and low light will be about the same if not better!
definitely if you're using tripods or gimbals- also look into the GH4's 90fps (it doesn't do higher)- i wasn't impressed with it which is why i opted for the 60fps on the g85 instead!
Kim Cruz yeah I know, I have the G7 and for my next camera I’m having to decide between IBIS with the G85 and a more robust slightly more “pro” camera with the GH4.
@@jackspadeofalltrades oh yeah my mistake it's 96! it's really up to how you shoot if you don't need to be moving your camera go gh4! but definitely have a look at the 96fps first!
Kim Cruz oh I move a lot lol what I really should do is be more patient and save up for the GH5. Ill use my G7 for now and invest in a gimbal and some dope lenses while I wait. I’ll work with what I got
@@KimCruz1 Yesh, agreed. I just hate waiting :D Gonna buy it the moment i see it, need it for my Overwatch videos u.u Also thanks for the fast up answer -b
for beginners or youth I can recommend the G7 + 20mm 1.7 version 1 not 2 plus a monopod and a variable Nd filter 46mm. I do Martial-Arts photography. My work you can find if you search for Seishin-Arts.
very informative videos but they're way over my head; please make videos to help people who don't understand much about all the settings to improve pic and video quality; i do own a G85; thanks
Hey Kim, thanks for your great vids!! I am thinking strongly about upgrading my G7 to a G85 or a much pricier GH5. I shoot mainly product and run and gun style DIY videos for my company, for example: ua-cam.com/video/K80DBMOCONc/v-deo.html If you wouldn’t mind watching the video, I would love to hear if you think I would even benefit from upgrading to the GH5 over the cheaper G85. I do use a zhiyun Crane V2, but after years of construction and tree work I have very shaky hands I think I would really benefit from the stabilization upgrade alone of the G85. What do you think?
hey adam! honestly if you're already using a gimbal i wouldn't bother upgrading to a g85 or even the gh5! you won't be seeing massive differences in image quality aside from being able to hand hold your camera! You'll want to upgrade to a g85 if: -You want to hand hold footage instead of using a gimbal. you'll still need a gimbal for big movements like walking etc, however if you're just making little movements the IBIS is decent enough! This is probably reason to upgrade to the g85 or gh5- but just remember IBIS is not as good as a gimbal! -Need weather sealing for more tougher conditions (although i would never take 'weather sealing' from a camera brand as a license to get a camera wet- remember there's no standard for 'weather sealing' in cameras). Get the GH5 if: -You need all the 2 points above -Want to do complex color grading -Need higher FPS for more slow motion -Need dual card slots for backup -Want a larger camera Basically, if you can make use of any of the advantages of the g85 or gh5, go for it. Just letting you know you probably don't need to spend that money to get better quality images and it would probably be better to spend that money on a nice lens!
I get horrible footage from my G7. The 4K footage looks more like 1080p up-scaled. With also a greenish tint. Colors are never natural and warm. Always looks like fluorescent lighting. Has grain noise even in day light shots. What kind of a shit camera gives you noise in daylight ! -9 years being into strobist photography and videography. Hell my simple canon 550d gives awesome footage compared to this. Only problem is i got this for the 4K.
Not sure what you’re on about mate but pretty much everyone on this channel gets good footage off of the g7, including the 1080p and even use it for professional jobs.
mgr5550 I can see your frustration man and I would try to get that looked at under warranty or maybe take it to a camera repair shop if there are any around- just know your camera isn’t bad at all and really hope it gets fixed!
the g85 is not more for pro people, lol i say this all the time, IT IS NOT ABOUT THE CAMERA IT IS ABOUT WHO IS HOLDING THAT CAMERA. People say this everytime a new version comes out. I know people with the g85 who cant edit for shit, why is that????? g7 and g85 is no different when you have to take that footage into the production room and edit your final product. O Yeah btw i do work for the panansonic Brand
Out of pure curiosity, which do you guys have and which one do you WANT to have?
Kim Cruz have the G7 with a 12-35 2.8 and 25 1.7. I want the G9. Video looks good enough and that high res mode seems awesome.
spencer2294112 that’s gonna be a big jump of a camera if you get the g9!
Good luck to you.
thanks man i'm actually trying to get more videos up but been sooo busy!! hoping to get some more videos up soon and thanks for the sub!!
The IBIS of the G85 is a big advantage, especially if you want to use older lenses with an m4/3 adapter.
"more prone to electrical problems"? Nonsense. Better color? Nope. Better IQ? Nope.
This is nonsense and the G85 is DOUBLE THE PRICE of the G7 for minor improvements
Dude you're a hero. This is the exact question i needed answered. I'll be upgrading for the IBIS very soon.
awesome glad i could help!!
What is the shutter shock issue?
honestly i never saw it in my pictures, but basically at very normal shutter speeds like 1/120 you can see some shake in the camera because the shutter mechanism wasn't so stable.. again, never saw it in my camera but seems like lots of other people...
Fast M 4/3 are really expensive and still behind FF ones, speaking of dof: you can't achieve a true 1.4 dof equivalent on m4/3, and speedbooster cost a lot to improve the situation (and can degrade image too)
So stupid btw to see they move mic input on G85 causing problem when the screen flip, on g7 is perfect on top of the side.
I'm really thinking about a single brand gear, don't know if sell everything and get olympus 4/3 which have ibis on every camera or fuji (but no stabilized and expensive lenses). There are pro and cons leaving FF
@gPhotonica CA I've measured shutter shock in all the G7 versions. The G85 has a different shutter.
Mercy Martinez thanks so much I’m glad you find them useful and thanks for subbing!!
Big selling point for the G85 (from the specs): a video is recorded as 1 file, not in chunks of 29'59". Great for filming interviews or lectures.
100% agree!!
You can switch between Pal and Ntsc on a G7. Just check out to the UA-cam Tutos!
In 2018!!
Great content upload Kin. Subbed
Thanks a lot man glad to have you in the channel!
As I'm looking for a camera that that has at least 16 MP, a 4K resolution (30 fps! Full), with a flip screen, & mic input, under $800! Is this the bet one??
no doubt! it's unreal that i'm saying this but even 3 years later, the lumix g7 is still competing against cameras within its price range!
Great video man, really balanced and unbiased which is refreshing 🙂 you've earned another sub 👍
thanks man i hope you enjoy my future stuff as well!
If you can though, the G9 is significantly more, but you are getting A LOT for your money- something for both high end photos and videos!
nice vid..a query..is G7 good in low light indoor video?
keep it up!
April 8, 2019. G85 with a 12-60mm f3.5 lens can be had for $638. G85 at this moment is better
Yeah that’s a good deal for now and especially considering the g95 is almost double that it’s a good budget buy right now!
The Canon rebels all have that weird mic placement issue. Hate it.
@@KimCruz1 Thanks

Just bought the camera today for my UA-cam channel, I found everything you said about the camera G7 to be spot on. Gonna shoot a video to upload tomorrow hopefully without editing. Can you recommend any editing software that works with this camera. *NEW Subscriber*
Thanks! Unfortunately I don’t know of any free video editors except for iMovie which is only on Mac but I really hope you enjoy the camera! It’s a beast of a camera for the price!!
you definitely need more than 50 subs! please keep on doing what you are doing!
TLDPL thanks so much I swear I have some of the nicest subscribers on UA-cam!!
you are one of the most positive faces out there so .. keep up the splendid work .. You are the main reason why I got my G7 in the first place! This cam just .. well .. I can't describe how it .. made me go back being .. creative!
TLDPL it’s a amazing for a camera in this price bracket right?! Anyway thanks buddy and will do!!
Awesome video, I own the g7 and I appreciate these videos. What's the red thing attached to the cameras by the way?
George Sayegh they are peak design straps! Basically they anchor the strap so you can easily take it on and off which is useful when I’m using straps when going handheld, and then taking straps off when on a gimbal (the strap messes up the gimbal)! Glad you like the video!
Is it still worth to buy g7 for my youtube videos. Its an educational channel... please reply
Where would you rank the GX85 among these? Mainly for video and no need for mic jack.
Keep up the great content!
thanks man and yup save that money!! if they're on sticks you can't tell the difference!

thanks man much appreciated haha i just broke the 1k subs mark let's just try to keep it going for now :D
Keep going on you'll do it
Bro I am fimmaker is Panasonic g7 is good. For film making?
Kind've hard to compare 4k resolution when you're video is 1080p to begin with. Just saying. You should just do a 4k comparison.
360p.. now that's a real subscriber!! thanks so much i hope you enjoy!
When I got my g85 people weren’t getting rid of their gh5’s or so I’d like to think.
I dig the honest speech at the end. Reminds me of Austin Kleon. Nice vid.
Hexspa thanks man glad you liked it!!
@@preethamrai155 no probs happy to help out and let me know what you go with in the end!
G85 or a6400?for still and motion in wildlife as I'm a beginner.also let me know if the reduced effective pixels in g85 a deal breaker
Hey man sorry didn’t see this! If you want overall value I would go with the g85. However if you want better overall image quality (and less lens selection and a bit more expensive lenses) go sony. Perhaps consider a good compromise in the a6100?
@@KimCruz1 thanks
What will work better insidea dense tropical rainforest anywhere between 5-30 days? Will the G7 be able to survive that without weather sealing?
honestly there's 3 things to look into.
I subbed!!
Not a problem just be warned that the video autofocus on Panasonic cameras aren't the best!
@@KimCruz1 thanks for the info.
@@KimCruz1 does the g85 shoot 1080p at 120fps? I'm looking to shoot mainly b roll
@@KimCruz1 also whats your recommendation for the beat camera with auto focus similar to the g85
Panasonic pros and cons:
Great video quality
Great ergonomics and easy to use
One of the biggest of not the biggest lens selection for mirrorless camera systems (important down the line)
Smaller sensor means it will have more noise compared to similarly priced cameras (not as good in low light)
Video autofocus isn't good (photo autofocus is great but not for sports)
Canon
Best video af
Colors are generally seen as the best (personal preference)
Good menus (not as easy as Panasonic in my opinion)
Pound for pound good video quality but in my experience you need their higher end cameras to produce very good quality video
Lens selection iffy (their APSC mirrorless line seems to be something they are going to leave and there are not a lot of lenses
If you go canon mirrorless get their full frame offering (canon RP) becuase that one has a future
Sony
Good video af
Good video quality from the bottom all the way to the top of the range
Lens selection has grown over the years
The fastest innovating camera company
Lenses can get expensive
Some older models (not sure about new ones) had had 1080p video but great 4K- this is not good because it means you need to shoot in 4K all the time and the file sizes are huge.
Again these are generalizations so it's important to see the specific models! I hope this helps!
Isn't the Cinematic video quality better in the G7
Good stuff, You've really got it going. subbed
thanks glad that you like it and welcome to the channel!
Those are my two main options, I’m starting On my own bussines food commercial videos so, I don’t need audio input but IBIS it’s a must. Thank you for this video. You have a New suscriber
awesome dude and good luck for your video business!!!
kim bro I HAVE MY g7 and when recording in 4k it records in 6 minute increments..is that normal ???
George Sayegh nice! Love the color and quality setup of your product shots!
Andres F Thanks!!
@@pac05055 lol cool man i hope you enjoy your new camera!!!
To be honest, i had the G85 and i just wasnt satisfied, im now with an a6300 and duude that was a huge upgrade for the same price
aye, and what about lenses size?
@@maximborisov3753 what exactly do u mean its e-mount
The Sony has slightly better image quality, OTOH the m43 sensor is better for scenes where you want more DOF. It's tough to get, for example, the full cast of a concert, dance scene or a play in full focus. Also the Sony's overheat which is a real bummer.
Hy, Do you know if G85 model got HDMI LIVE mode and keep sending video signal trough the HDMI out put during filming ? ( My DMC-FZ300 LUMIX shutdown the monitor and give me a nice black window !!! ) PS : Same limitation on GH7 !!
hey man sorry i actually don't know :(
but i mostly go to the g7 and bought a steadicam or a gimbal (so i can use with other cameras too, g85 is to completely portable ... i like to built stuff bigger
Pinned this comment to make sure others see!!
hallo man, nice video. What’s the G85 is good for photography?
hi so sorry for the late reply, yes it's good but if you just want to take photos, i would recommend getting a different camera, but if you need some photos and videos, i'd say it's worth it!
Can I use a g85 rig on the g7? Just wondering if the ports are similar on both cameras
hey sorry i am actually not sure about this, but if i remember correctly, the G85 ports are slightly different on the left side of the camera, so that might be an issue with the g7! Also, the g85 is slightly bigger than the g7 so that may also be an issue!
Great vids Kim! I have the gx85 and would like to get the g9. Have the 25mm 1.7 and next will get the 42.5mm 1.7. Love the lumix cameras!
jimbo33 thanks man and me too!
Thanks!
Which is better for photography g7 or g85?
Hey man honestly both are basically the same! The main difference is the sensor stabilization on the g85 and if you ask me, I would only buy cameras with sensor stabilization at this point. Also, I made a vid about this it might help you out! ua-cam.com/video/ltRQj1Dn14M/v-deo.html
Here in india used g7 available about $200 and g85 $300 . Which will be good for a fist time photographer to take some video.
@@saneeshbabups G85 all the way- it has in body stabilization and has a metal build. Get it and don’t look back!
i had g7 also and i bought a second had in perfect condition g85 at 300 euros and i am very happy with these little monsters.
PERIKLIS TSINTZAS amazing image quality and nice lenses on the system!!
@@KimCruz1 exactly!
Good video, thanks Kim!
Thank you!
Does the G85 split files when recording for long periods of time? Or is it just one continues file after each recording?
In my experience it was just one long recording.
@@KimCruz1 For sure! Thanks for the response!
Love your channel, keep it up!
Ivan Urusov thanks buddy and thanks for stopping by!!
Nice comparison, well done mate!
thanks man glad you liked it!
Hi, could you please let me know what microphone you are using in this video?
Thank you
Hey! Yeah I use the rode video micro for almost all of my UA-cam videos!
Kim why didn’t you get the g9?
GREAT video. I'm getting the G9 firat because my emphasis is on photos. But the G7 or G85 for a second camera looks like a winner. PEACE from ATL ✊🏾📸
Thanks man and I hope you enjoy the g9 seems like it’s a beast of a camera!!
G85 coming from a Canon 70D. I make vlogs and car tutorials. Peace and congrats!
thanks man and good luck with your channel!!
Willz World Media I’m looking to move from my 60D; just usually too big and heavy for my liking for what I do. Have you enjoyed the change?
I'm a Nikon shooter, but I think I'm going to grab a G7 for shooting interviews.
you won't regret it!
Lumix G7 or Canon M50 for pics and homevideo?
I’d take the m50 buddy just coz of video af and video quality is good enough
@@KimCruz1 Thank You.
excuse me,I used my g85 AF-C to record video ,but the focus always repeat focus ,how to get better thank you!
hey man you have to use manual focus! but it's easier to use your smartphone for getting focus on your face i made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/qIRfe1DE0T8/v-deo.html
@@KimCruz1 Thank you~
Great video🎥🤟🏽
thanks buddy glad you enjoyed it!
I’m a G7 owner who mainly uses a tripod or a gimbal to film. I wanted the G85 because of the IBIS. But not for the price. Great video.
it's weird how...
I have a t3i and I was thinking about upgrading to the g7. Worth it ?
it depends man! if you need autofocus do NOT upgrade to the G7.. if you can live with manual focus, 100% upgrade! The footage will look much sharper, and low light will be about the same if not better!
Alright thanks ! The main reason is for the video aspect and I never use auto focus when I film.
@@illisshots4929 you won't be disappointed man!
What about the GH4? Im thinking of that over the G85 because of slow motion frame rates and headphone jack
definitely if you're using tripods or gimbals- also look into the GH4's 90fps (it doesn't do higher)- i wasn't impressed with it which is why i opted for the 60fps on the g85 instead!
Kim Cruz yeah I know, I have the G7 and for my next camera I’m having to decide between IBIS with the G85 and a more robust slightly more “pro” camera with the GH4.
Kim Cruz it’s 96fps btw
@@jackspadeofalltrades oh yeah my mistake it's 96! it's really up to how you shoot if you don't need to be moving your camera go gh4! but definitely have a look at the 96fps first!
Kim Cruz oh I move a lot lol what I really should do is be more patient and save up for the GH5. Ill use my G7 for now and invest in a gimbal and some dope lenses while I wait. I’ll work with what I got
You are really great! Love your channel.

what about the photo quality in G7?
thanks terrific review
Hello guys, I bought the lumix g7 and made 2 travel videos out of it. I made videos for fun so just leave some comments for improvement. Thank you.
video quality of these two is the same?????? u should make a comparison video side by side, not just only a picture side by side
I did at @1:28
@@KimCruz1 but i think u should move the camera or shoot moving object, so we can see the difference clearly
Iam a beginner photographer and Lumix g85 is good for me
i bought one too, and i keep the g3 still
for beginners or youth I can recommend the G7 + 20mm 1.7 version 1 not 2 plus a monopod and a variable Nd filter 46mm. I do Martial-Arts photography. My work you can find if you search for Seishin-Arts.
oliver h awesome man yeah save some cash get version 1!
Même pour un professionnel en photo, la Lumix G7 fait extrêmement bien son travaille en photo.
that's right! Sorry i can't speak french but from google translate, i guess you said the G7 is also good for pro photography?! it is!
Even for a professional photographer, the Lumix G7 is doing its job extremely well.
Lol, the weight difference is so miniscule.. I would argue that it doesn't matter. That or maybe start doing some curls dawg
Maybe next year...
very informative videos but they're way over my head; please make videos to help people who don't understand much about all the settings to improve pic and video quality; i do own a G85; thanks
TheMonkeyally sure I’ll definitely try and do that!
the anti-aliasing on g7 is really annoying for me to be honest.
It’s never really annoyed me too much especially in video but then again I don’t really pixel peep too much!
Camera shopping is so intense! Especially on a budget 😩 Great video, thank you!
yeah that rabbit hole can get really deep be careful haha!!
ok sir
g7 tho no hdmi out during recording....... i have g7 looking at g85
Hey Kim, thanks for your great vids!! I am thinking strongly about upgrading my G7 to a G85 or a much pricier GH5. I shoot mainly product and run and gun style DIY videos for my company, for example:
ua-cam.com/video/K80DBMOCONc/v-deo.html
If you wouldn’t mind watching the video, I would love to hear if you think I would even benefit from upgrading to the GH5 over the cheaper G85.
You'll want to upgrade to a g85 if:
-You want to hand hold footage instead of using a gimbal. you'll still need a gimbal for big movements like walking etc, however if you're just making little movements the IBIS is decent enough!
Get the GH5 if:
-You need all the 2 points above
-Want to do complex color grading
-Need higher FPS for more slow motion
-Need dual card slots for backup
-Want a larger camera
Basically, if you can make use of any of the advantages of the g85 or gh5, go for it. Just letting you know you probably don't need to spend that money to get better quality images and it would probably be better to spend that money on a nice lens!
Why not sell both and get a Gh5(s)? :o
because i still need a b cam for most jobs, and because I use primes i just slap a wide lens on one and a longer lens on the other...
Which the best g7 or g85
it depends on what you want
@@KimCruz1 I mind for video?
i would take the g85 just because of the IBIS- it makes a big difference for video if you are using your camera handheld and without tripods!
@@KimCruz1 thanks Man you are great
thanks man glad i could help out!
@@KimCruz1 > Just sharing. Maybe i got a lemon. Its very much possible, even though far fetched.

g85 all the frigin way
the g85 is not more for pro people, lol i say this all the time, IT IS NOT ABOUT THE CAMERA IT IS ABOUT WHO IS HOLDING THAT CAMERA. People say this everytime a new version comes out.
