There're a few things I like about this video: 1) The artist doesn't talk my ear off; 2) He uses real time speed; 3) The captions about what colors to use are very helpful; 4) The sketch leaves room for imaginning; 5) The techniques gives us ideas to develop our own style.
Thank you for not making this a speed paintig video like 99% of every other demonstration video I come across. People learn so much more when it is not a sped up video.
@@PeterSheelerart ....hahaha....thank you Peter for recognizing the connection. My youngest sister calls me Tiggy. One day when I was away on a school trip, she listened to my David Bowie's Albums without my permission. After she heard the song Ziggy Stardust she nicked named me Tiggy Stardust, because I'm left handed and an Aries (ruled by the planet Mars). By the way, I subscribed to your channel. I really love your work. You are an amazing artist.
It would be great if you could add the photograph you used to do the art work. It would help us a lot to see what you pick from it and what you leave out, how you choose the color to use, etc.
Exactly! It would add even more to the lesson. We won't judge whether it's identical to the photo or some features were created; we want to learn that too. :D
I’ve become obsessed with your art! I’ve binged watch everything you’ve done and now I’m about to have a go. Absolutely love your pieces they’re just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing I will definitely be getting my family to buy some for my birthdays and Christmas’- my new WANTED list. 👍🏼🥰
By far the best tutorial / follow along video on watercolors I have come across all month !! Thanks so much ! Pure art , nothing chatty or sped up ! Brilliant
I realize how much time you have spent putting your demonstrations online and I want you to know that I each one I've seen is like a jewel in itself. Thank you for sharing your approach with us and bringing art, learning and excitement to the Internet. Alyse
Thank you. You're 'quirky 'pen lines give so much character to the picture. I love the deep shadows and the detail of the lamp, washing line, chimney and green door and narrow streets. Very atmospheric.
OH THIS IS WHAT THE STYLE IS CALLED! I've been absolutely in love with this style and have been to trying to find tutorials without knowing what it's called and not finally I found out it's called line/pen and wash !! I love it
Line and wash is a great form. Lines establish edges and watercolor rapidly adds volume by adding value. It doesn't take long to create a finished work, so it is great for travel.
I honestly think this is the best watercolor instructional vid I have seen on youtube ..and I have watched many. Something just clicked whilst I was watching this and I managed to create something similar after weeks of struggling and failing. Thanks Peter.
Thank you for taking the time to record and upload so many videos. I think it's just so generous of you to share your skills with strangers, especially for free. Truly, thank you. I've wanted to take painting classes but local classes have not been in my budget. Somehow, searching UA-cam had never previously crossed my mind. I'm so thankful I stumbled upon your videos. It's nearly 4 am and I'm still up watching your demos, in awe at how quickly you can produce such beautiful paintings. I am so inspired to try my hand at painting after watching your videos (and, of course, after I get some rest.) Such beautiful work in every painting!
I tried this today and I’m about to cry out of happiness, it’s so beautiful , Thank you sir I won’t share it in my social media so the credit will stay yours .
This is absolutely beautiful, I'd love to be able to create art like this one day. I've just refound my love for drawing and your work is very inspiring, thank you for sharing!
You have been a great inspiration for me. We have so many beautiful places here in Greece and every day I say "I have to draw this". Thank you for showing me that it is not that complicated.
Great lessons learned from watching this silent video (which, incidentally, made viewing much more enjoyable and focused me). I learned the streets cobblestones could be inferred without drawing each individual stone, using unhesitating pen strokes make a difference, and that a 1/2 inch flat brush is not too big to fill tight spaces. Terrific video Peter, and just want to say it again, the silence and on-screen text were a plus and helped with your demonstration.
Thank you for the great video. I love your line work. It is so nice to watch a demo video where the person doesn’t yak on for hours before getting to the demo or doing gimmicky intro effects!
Thank you. I've been dabbling in line and wash city scenes but didn't know what to call it or more importantly how to achieve all the layers and shadowing. Love the look. Can't wait to get home and try it.
One of the best demos and I watched without disturbance. Thanks for not talking like other teachers. Superb technique and great learning. The real time approach was great to follow and absorb
So glad I stumbled upon your work. I haven't been inspired to paint for maybe a year or more. Your paintings have done this for me. Looking forward to dusting off my brushes and hopefully producing something! I have only watched 3, so I've a lot more to watch. So relaxing. Thank you so much.
your UA-cam videos have inspired me to try pen and wash. I'm trying real hard to transition from painting in acrylics, to watercolor, and the pen and wash is helping me to do that. I didn't know I could paint, or do anything at all artistic, till I was 49 years old. I have a huge learning curve, but people seem to like my work, so that's encouraging. I've sold a few things, and donated a few things to fundraisers, etc. I now do acrylics, watercolor and photography. Who knew! I'm not real good at any of that, but having a blast. Anyway, thanks for helping me out! lol = )
+Rosemary Clark . Thank you Rosemary. Art should be all about fun. Selling your work is a happy side affect of your enjoyment. Never too late to learn. Peter
This was fantastic. Thanks Peter - my favourite style is pen sketching, and I love your style. It's so difficult to find other artists that sketch in the loose style I aspire too. I'm so happy that I found this video. Haven't sketched in a few days, and this one has inspired me to get my pen and water color pencils out. Love it!
Beautiful and thanks for posting. I did urbansketching as well and mostly on site. Having surrounded by the buildings and hearing birds chirping, vehicles horning, people talking ... they are positive (but sometimes not) stimulations. I am not good in colouring and find your postings very helpful. Thanks again.
Thanks peter for this awesome video! I'm an absolute beginner but I tried to follow your video and it turned out really well. I hope you will keep posting more!
I do like this one,, simple but very effective, I am new to this technique and I think it will suit my life style. I live part of the year in a pretty part of Spain with very old buildings, which I think will lend itself to this style. Thank you for sharing.
I was literally searching what style is this as I saw friend posted hers on facebook (shy to ask cause not very close)... And, here i found it -urban sketching... Gonna start learning this 👍
I did my first ever watercolour today at the age of 42. It made me a bit angry because it looked rubbish! I am now motivated to learn as much as I can and improve. You're very welcome Ben. You're right about real-time speed. Thank you :)
Yes, I don't understand why they want to make the video in speed up :( everyone can do it on UA-cam if they want. So thanks!
99% would slow the video down by one percent
But I do understand and agree with what you are saying
Edit: just realized that I am late af
Ben i agree. You learn more from seeing every brush or pen stroke.
I love the silence. No music. No talking. No background noise. This video allows me to focus on the drawing and water colour technique. Thank you !

Thank you. So glad you enjoyed this one. Peter :)
Thank you for opening my mind about pen and ink and watercolor sketching.
I love the way you sketch those buildings
Is it possible to do this on a hot pressed paper?
This was done on Arches 140lb Hot Press. My favorite paper :)
